I loved the very spacious and private wrap around porch. It was such a peaceful place to relax. The landscaping if beautiful and the high hedges give good privacy. There are also lots of public spaces in the lodge itself. The homemade breakfast was delicious each day and very unique. Our room was very clean and bright. We had a great Valentine's Day weekend here! We stayed in the library room which was so big! It was decorated beautifully and the bathroom was huge. The red in the room were so rich and made me feel lost in time. I am so glad we choose this room, It felt like a secret with the door hidden under the stairs on the first floor. Inside was decorated so beautifully and had a flick on fireplace which we had on every time we were in the room. There was a giant whirlpool tub and the shower was beautifully done in white tile and the water heated up in seconds! We had flowers, chocolate covered strawberries, and champagne added to be in the room when we got there and I highly recommend adding this on! The tulips were beautiful and made this gorgeous room even more beautiful!!! The bed and sheets in the room were so luxurious. The sleigh bed was huge and comfortable. And it was really easy to warm the room up, i was surprised because a lot of times radiators in old houses can be so difficult! And I forgot a toothbrush but luckily the inn was able to provide me with one. Don, the owner was friendly and nice. He welcomed up and gave us a quick tour upon our arrival. His breakfast was amazing, the first day was this great scrambled egg mixture and bacon, it was SO DELICIOUS! Second day was a yummy fruity Belgium waffle!! The only issue during the weekend was right when we were checking out. The front steps were covered in black ice which I discovered only when I fell down all three brick stairs. Luckily I didn't hit my head, when my husband let Don know, he immediately asked if I was ok and started sanding the stairs. He was very apologetic and rectified the issue so it doesn't happen to any other inn guests. It was an unfortunate accident and hopefully won't happen to anyone else. We 100% plan to come back. We love Newport and the inn felt like a home away from home (if we lived in a mansion regularly!). Highly recommend a little romantic weekend away here!! read more

Absolutely perfect bed and breakfast! The atmosphere is absolutely magical, and it's walking distance to the Elm House and restaurants, and a little further away from breakers but still walkable! It is soooo beautiful inside. I love that they have cookies and tea/coffee out the whole day to grab for a quick snack to sit on the porch with. Rooms are clean and comfy. Very Disappointed! We have stayed at many wonderful B&B's in Newport and wanted to try someplace new. The house was clean and the location is good, yet the house is in great need of updating. As an example, The corbels for the main banister are broken and is a real safety hazard. Strangely the owners pointed it out to us. Why wouldn't anyone want to fix it and prevent someone from getting hurt while walking up and down the stairs. The real glaring issue was the staff (with the exception of the housekeeper), lacking basic hospitality and social skills. The tone of the staff was not welcoming. The staff's tone came across as any request from a guest while they were busy was a bother. Just an example, we had one roll of toilet paper in our room and we were staying two nights, my husband went down a little bit before 8:30 am and inquired if we could get additional rolls and he was told to wait until the housekeeper arrived. I then had inquired after 8:30, if I could possibly have my slice of toast earlier then the meal (wanted it with my coffee) , the response was "you get your toast when I bring out your eggs". The best was the Manager, when I had a quick question regarding the history of the house, as I was walking out the door to get going with our plans. She answered my question and I said thank you, as I was turning around she abruptly said "Don't walk away! Who talks to guest like that. Total disrespect. I should have read the previous reviews mentioning the culture of the staff members. Not friendly or welcoming, actually terrible. read more

We visited here on the Martin Luther King long weekend, we only intended on staying one night, but liked it so much we added another night. The rooms gave us the impression of staying at one of the mansions, obviously on a smaller scale. We stayed on the 2nd floor in the turret room. The room is furnished very nIcely. There's a canopy king size bed, a fireplace, a couple sitting chairs, TV, a large jacuzzi tub (big enough for two) and a separate shower. Whole room was very nice. When you enter the Ivy Lodge there's a large living room to the right with plenty of wing chairs, sofas, and tables. To the left is the dining room, with a table that probably sits 16 people. Breakfast was very good. There's: coffee, an assortment of teas, juice, house made granola, fresh fruit, and an assortment of breads for toasting. The main course breakfast was eggs in a basket with a side of bacon on day one and French toast (Brioche?) and sausage. Both breakfasts were fantastic! Don the owner was great to talk with and even gave us a good recommendation of a sports bar we could watch the playoff football games on Sunday. We'll definitely be back again. read more

This was the loveliest of B & Bs. We had the good fortune of having the house all to ourselves so it really felt homey. Jacqui, the owner, is really amazing. She makes sure your needs are met in every way. The breakfast was delicious and the little extras, chocolate chip cookies, home made cake and snacks, and tea and hot chocolate were always available. The inn is kept impeccably and the decor is beautiful. We were able to tour all the rooms and one was nicer than the other. We decided to return and have already booked a few nights in a June. Review Stayed at the Ivy Lodge Nightmare on Clay St from July 7-9. Had an unpleasant experience. Booked the room 5 months in advance for a destination wedding in Rhode Island and choose a room online with Wesley. Recommended by the bride's mother. First time in Newport, excited to explore the city and visit the mansions. Checked in with Wesley around 12-12.15 pm on Friday. He showed us some places to visit. Given the Van Alen room. About 1.5 hours later, while we were out for lunch, Wesley called and admitted that he had given us the wrong room. He asked if we could move, but we explained that we were unable to do so immediately and would sort it out later. We had already used the bathroom, unpacked our clothes, and had personal items in the room. Wesley insisted that we move out by 3 PM as he had another guest coming in. We reiterated that we couldn't leave right away and would check in at the inn after lunch. About 20 minutes later, Wesley called back, leaving a message that he had resolved the issue and everything was fine with the room( on my voicemail) After lunch, we headed back to the inn, which was two hours after Wesley's call. At that time, Jacqui, Wesley's mother and the innkeeper, called in a sneering voice with a nasty attitude and accused me of being inflexible about moving and causing her son to give away our room to other guests. She claimed that her son had asked us to move just ten minutes after we checked in, but I corrected her, stating that he called 1.5 hours later. She also falsely claimed that her son had offered to move us and compensate us for a night, which never happened. I explained to her that her son had left a message on my phone two hours ago, stating that everything was sorted out. It was clear that she was not aware of this. However, she insisted that we had to leave immediately and demanded that we grab our bags. She was essentially throwing us out. It was an unbelievable situation, and I have never been treated in such a deplorable manner as a paying guest. We were repeatedly harassed by both Wesley and Jacqui. This was outright discrimination in the year 2023. There was no reason for her behavior. I am very sure this would have never happened to us if we were white. I explained to her that we are here for a wedding and that the bride's mother recommended her Inn. We were willing to go to the Marriot and we told her we can do so if she pays for it. She refused. Jacqui's solution was that we have to leave and again . She was adamant on throwing us out and insisting we leave. Wow! There was no reason for her behavior. I am very sure this would have never happened to us if we were white. She is in the hospitality business and she is a nasty woman with a bad attitude. I told her we needed to be at the wedding for 12.30 pm on Saturday and no time to find or move to another place except the Marriot. I suggested since we have used our room and the other guests also used theirs we can make the switch on Saturday as a compromise. At this time both my husband and I felt unwelcome and I was upset about her behavior and response about the room. This situation really spoilt our cheerfulness. I paid for an upgraded room chosen online and discussed it on the phone with Wesley five months earlier that didn't match the room I received on Saturday and I never received a confirmation by email or receipts from either room charges although promised. There is no room online called the "savanna room" this may be her code for a shitty room. I carefully selected the room I wanted which was the Van Allen at the front of the home on the second floor. The next day we were moved to a tiny room on the third floor at the back stairs. It was claustrophobic. This location is typically servant quarters in these homes. I could hear the kitchen staff at the base of the stairs. We paid for an upgraded room and I told Wesley when I booked that I do not want a third floor walk up. At this time we were stuck headed to the wedding.. We did not stay at the property except for sleeping which I couldn't because of the Savanna room . We didn't eat their breakfast or utilize any of the house or grounds. My husband and I travel extensively all over the world and have never encountered a ruder or more unpleasant person like Jacqui. She said she doesn't care if we post a review as well. Wesley never attempt to resolve this matter as well and it was handed off to his mother. My husband and I were treated unfairly and it was clear we were discriminated against in this situation. We are colored people. Family owned businesses where they don't care about customers and have an ability to discriminate freely and should have consequences. Never again do we plan on staying at a B and B . I would rather spend my $800 plus dollars at the Marriot or a reputable establishment. Don't waste your money or stress your life with this place or associate yourself with these nasty dishonest people! read more

A beautiful old inn with all the charm of the old and with enough of a touch of the new, to make the stay amazing. Both rooms booked were very special. The grounds were absolutely gorgeous. The hosts were very attentive to needs. The location is very good. There were home made cookies and pastries available 24/7. I do wish that coffee was also available at all times. They asked about any allergies and worked around that. Breakfast was new, each day but honestly, could have been a bit bigger and a bit more creative. For the skill of the chef, it fell a bit short. I was hungry after both breakfasts. Nevertheless, it was well prepared and tasted good. I could not give 4.5 stars which is what I felt it deserved, but compared to other bed and breakfasts post covid, this ranks up there. read more

The Ivy Lodge is a beautiful bed and breakfast located in the heart of the Bellevue Mansion District in Newport RI. There is a small parking lot for guests. The entry hall is impressive (see pictures). We arrived Sunday afternoon to check in and were greeted by Denise, the assistant. She was very friendly and helpful in getting us oriented with the town. She showed us the amenities as well as brought us up to our room, the Magnolia Suite. The suite itself is very comfortable, clean and cozy. Is is a corner room, and has exposure to sunlight from two sides. There is also a gas fireplace, which adds a nice ambiance. The suite has an ensuite, and includes only a shower (no bath). The bed, linens and pillows were all comfy and on par with what one finds at a Marriott or Hilton. Breakfast is homemade by Jacqui. We had French toast with bacon (delicious!) as well as fresh fruit, yogurt and homemade granola. Coffee was very good. We had breakfast with the other guests who were staying, which made for very nice conversation. Note, breakfast is served from 8:30 am until 10:00 am. We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely be back! We would highly recommend the Ivy Lodge to our friends and family should they ever visit Newport. Whether you're coming here for the first time, or it's your "go to" place to stay in Newport, Don and the entire staff make you feel welcome. The rooms are immaculate and the bed linens fresh and crisp. The breakfasts are freshly made to order and rival any of the many spectacular eateries in the area. Wow just look at all these positive reviews! Makes me wonder if I'm turning into a cynical old bastard, or maybe I'm the only one who wasn't smoking weed for the duration of my stay? Either way, there was some good, some bad, and some downright ugly (and strange). First, the good. My girlfriend and I were invited by a couple to stay for their wedding weekend. The entire wedding party had our run of the place, and it's top-notch in terms of beauty and elegance, and the location in relation to Newport itself (walking distance from town, walking from the cliffs & mansions, etc) was pretty solid. So, off to a good start. Met some of the nicest people in the world, and formed friendships I hope last a long time. So, the table was set for an amazing stay at a picturesque little lodge. The good continued: The rooms themselves are gorgeous and charming, even if ours had a slanting ceiling that doubled as a health hazard for someone like me who's 6 feet tall. The A/C worked, which was KEY, and the bathroom was big and had a great shower. So, on the amenities side, we're all set. The piano was horribly beyond saving, but that's neither here nor there. (But it would have been nice to have the option to play November Rain at midnight after 10 whiskey drinks.) The biggest disappointment was actually the personnel - and I hate saying that because we both came into this situation looking to like everyone involved. Truly. We're nice people. A couple things really rubbed us the wrong way though, and when you're at a B&B, it's the little things that can make or break a weekend. Darlene and Darryl, the innkeepers, seemed nice enough if not a bit chatty, and we got off on the right foot when we arrived. Darlene was very clear on the "breakfast ends at 10am" policy, and we did our best to observe it, but the first chink in the armor came when my girlfriend was refused service at 10 after 10 on the morning of the wedding. I mean, really. Really? Really. Not cool. It's not like this is a McDonald's where if you break your breakfast McMuffin policy for one person you open the floodgates to anarchy, this is a freaking B&B with a wedding party that should feel like it's being catered to on such a special occasion. Breaching the breakfast window by 15 minutes shouldn't be made into a federal case. So, that's the ugly. Then, the staff not only threw away the box that contained the bridal veil (this item was not inexpensive), but denied throwing it away, and refused to search in the garbage. The bride herself pulled it out of a dumpster on her wedding day, and disaster was very narrowly averted. (That's the downright strange - why would you throw this veil away, and then why not help look for it?? Brides and dumpsters do not mix.) The rest of the stay went off OK, but there was a general sense that we were an inconvenience, and the staff was rather brusque and stand-offish most of the time. Yes, they were accommodating around specific requests, but it was more of a general feeling, and an attitude that made us feel more like intruders and less like guests. They were annoyed that we were there it seemed like, and nobody likes to pay a lot of money to feel like your hosts are annoyed with you. Did I mention we're nice people? This wasn't a rowdy boozed up crowd (well...), it was a nice group of folks wearing loafers and looking very east coast. I even covered up my tattoos with a compression sleeve! I'd recommend this place with a shitload of stars if they could class up the hosting, as the location is fabulous and the rooms well done, especially for an old B&B. Here's hoping this review is taking in the spirit in which it's intended. We loved every minute of our trip to Rhode Island, and it was one of the best weddings I've ever attended. One of my colleagues recommended this bed and breakfast to me for our recent trip to Newport, so we decided to check it out and make a visit. The inn owners are super sweet and ready to help you in any way they can from food allergies to area attractions. Our room was on the second floor and had a lovely fireplace, huge bathroom, and a side room encase you had extra guests. Seeing as we went off season we used the fireplace which warmed up the room immediately. In the morning we had a lovely breakfast with the other guests which was great to learn what they were checking out in Newport and hear a little bit about them. The eggs that were prepared were great and they were really nice about my yoke allergy which was nice. The location of the Inn is super close to the downtown. Unfortunately our visit was cold and rainy so we drove a lot of places, however on a sunny day it wold be really easy to walk around to the mansions, cliff walk and downtown. read more

I sort of feel bad leaving this review after reading all of the amazingly positive ones but I have to say...I just didn't have the same experience as everyone else. To be fair, I'll break it down into the positives & negatives: Positives: Location - The place is definitely really cute and in a great location. You are about two blocks from the cliff walk and the mansions and a five minute walk down to Thames street. Someone else mentioned it's a bit off of the beaten path so there is an element to privacy which is nice. The Ivy Lodge is great for a couple looking to spend the weekend in Newport. An additional positive, we were a little early getting in so they made an effort to get our room ready for us and gave us a map along with a few places to go see. We also had a surprise guest that they were able to accommodate on the fly, which was nice. Negatives: Price - I had a few friends coming in from out of town and we were looking to head down to Newport for the day and stay the night. As it was folk festival weekend, everything was booked. We called the Ivy Lodge and were told there was one suite available with a king and a trundle but it would be $590...for one night. Seems like a bit of price gouging. Service - I may be wrong but I thought one of the things that made a B & B special was the service and the fact that you felt welcomed. Someone else here mentioned the rudeness of the woman who runs it and that's really what turned me off the most. She just wasn't friendly, even when I think she was trying to be. Breakfast - When we booked the room and when we checked in, the biggest deal was made about breakfast and how we needed to be down there and it wasn't any old continental breakfast. I thought I was getting a gourmet meal (and for what we paid, we should've!). We sat down and weren't acknowledged for a good ten minutes. I had no idea if we were even getting anything! In the end, the breakfast was fine but it certainly wasn't anything special. Truthfully, I might've preferred the continental breakfast. It was so hot! - We weren't allowed to turn the AC below 70 and our room and the rest of the place were stifling. I get that it's an old building, but I mean, you do the majority of your business in the hot summer! My take is that this place is ok and if I had paid a bit less, maybe my experience would've been better. I can't forsee myself going back though. read more

My husband and I took advantage of last-minute, middle-of-the-week availability here and spent one night. The owner helped us find a great place for dinner (Fluke) AND he generously gave us a quick tour, indulging my interest in historical architecture. The entryway, parlors, and other public rooms were exquisitely decorated and comfortably cool even in the height of humid summer. We probably got the "worst" room in the place but I use that word with happy irony: even the smallest third-story room like ours is lavish and charming: a queen-sized bed, a whirlpool tub in a private bath, a gas fireplace, and a flat-screen TV. It was clean, neat, and well-equipped with the practical things too. You don't always get an iron or a hair dryer in a B&B but we did here. I also have to say it was a decadent pleasure to use my laptop on the porch. The days we were in Newport were particularly hot and sticky and we baked during our tours of the mansions, but the wraparound porch at the Inn provided a comfortable, reasonably secluded place to cool down in the shady breeze. The downsides: the self-cleaning tub makes a necessary racket about 15 minutes after you use it, so you ought to be a good neighbor about using it when it won't wake up the whole house. The mattress was hard and poky so neither of us slept very well. I've also had better breakfast entrees-- the fresh fruit and just-baked pastries were exquisite, but the main dish portion was small and uninspired (pancakes made from a box mix with agrifood sausage links). That being said, I hope we can stay here again when we return. The location is fabulous, I'm betting the mattresses are better in the second-story rooms, and there are plenty of breakfast options just a short walk away. read more

Hubby decided to surprise me with a night and a couple of days in Newport for our anniversary. How he found the Ivy Lodge I'll never know. It was a nice B&B on lovely grounds with clean, mostly comfortable rooms and a delicious breakfast. When we arrived Elisa showed us around and then gave us some suggestions for where to have dinner. She was sweet, informative and extremely helpful. Kudos to Elisa! We took her recommendation and had a wonderful dinner at Mamma Luisas. Our room was one of the smaller ones which was absolutely fine with us. We weren't really there to spend a lot of time in our room. Although very clean, I found it odd that there was trash left in the bin in the bedroom (a banana (?!) and some paper). No big deal really, just odd. The bed was super comfortable, especially for someone who has back "issues" like I do. The pillows were too thick to be comfortable so we ended up sleeping without them. A/C was lovely as were the amenities. The shower had 2 settings: scalding & off. Might want to look into that. Breakfast in the morning was quite nice. Hot breakfast plus continental options. The fresh cookies, lemonade, ice coffee, etc. in the afternoon was a really nice (and welcome) touch. The Innkeepers were kind enough to assist hubby with fresh flowers for me in the room as an anniversary surprise. Very thoughtful on his part and very accommodating and helpful on their part. This was one of the most charming Bed and Breakfasts I have ever been to. We stayed in the french inspired La Chambra Jaune room, and were not disappointed. The house itself is beautiful. You walk in and are immediately taken aback by the exquisite entry hall. Each room is decorated beautifully with careful attention paid to detail. Though there is plenty to do around town, the inn offers many lovely common areas to sit, relax, and occupy yourself during down time. Our hosts were very inviting and helpful. My husband surprised me with a one-night getaway to Newport the weekend before I returned to work from maternity leave. I must say, he really outdid himself. He booked a night here in the Turret Room, and it was gorgeous! The inn itself is conveniently located, but also set back a little, so you don't hear traffic or street noise. The B&B resembles an old Victorian home. The inside is so charming, and our room was great! It had all the amenities -- fridge, TV, gas fireplace, four-poster bed, and the bathroom was absolutely to-die-for! It had a huge jacuzzi tub, double sinks, a nice shower... I wish I could take the bathroom and put it in my house! The man who ran the place was incredibly kind and sweet. He gave us advice on how to get around as well as suggestions for restaurants, attractions, etc. We had a great time here, and the Ivy Lodge was just the icing on the cake! We didn't end up eating here, but from the other reviews, it sounds like we missed out on a good breakfast! read more

Wow! What a gorgeous b&b and great location! We stayed in the Library Room and I definitely recommend it for a romantic getaway. The website pictures don't do it justice. Large cute room with fireplace and huge jacuzzi tub. It's also the only room on the first floor and very quiet. Went midweek in the off season for a great price. The interim inn keepers were great and the housekeeper was nice & keeps the place very clean (tip her!). Short walk to the cliff walk and a 15-20 minute walk to downtown and the wharfs. read more

It is the only room with a view of the neighborhood. it was very, very comfortable. Beautiful B&B super close to the mansions and Cliff Walk. The staff was excellent, the food was amazing, and the accommodations were gorgeous. The house itself is very charming: a beautiful wrap-around porch, a dazzling entryway, and lovely rooms. Breakfast is homemade every morning, along with yogurt, granola, fruit salad and a toasting station. The staff is great. Every morning, it's like having your own personal trip planner standing by to help with reservations, advice and recommendations. Daryl and Darlene are SO helpful and knowledgeable about the area. The gf and i had the pleasure of staying in the Victorian suite; wonderful room with king size bed, fire place, and jacuzzi tub big enough for both of us. The room also hosted a small patio and indoor air-conditioning unit, which could be useful in the summer months. Darrell, the owner, was extremely knowledgeable and eager to help us get settled in. He also pointed out some great restaurants and things to do/see while on vacation. If you plan on staying in Newport without a doubt stay at The Ivy Lodge Bed and Breakfast! The house is beautiful, rooms are large, spotless, and comfortable. It is located within walking distance of the Newport mansions, restaurants and downtown shopping but far enough away from the tourist chaos. The hosts Don and Jacqui are very welcoming and friendly, they went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. It was a special weekend for my wife so I asked Jacqui to get a small cake for her and she was happy to accommodate. The cake was waiting for us in our room, my wife was very happy. Don and Jacqui also were very kind to give us a military discount. The breakfast selection was great, eggs, waffles, fresh fruit, homemade granola, and breads. Highly recommend! read more

We decided to stop on our way home from Boston in Newport. We called the inn at 1pm, and they were able to accommodate us. The room was great! We stayed in the reading room, which had a working fireplace and a huge, comfy bed. All inns have these amenities but the ivy has something special in its hosts. The woman (sorry I forgot your name) was knowledgable and accommodating beyond what is typical. My only regret is that we had to leave before breakfast... rumor has it that it's amazing! read more

Just got back from a wonderful weekend in Newport. We took my parents here for my mothers birthday. She loved it! Part of the reason it was so wonderful was due to staying at The Ivy Lodge. The Inn Keepers, Jacquie and Don...:as well as the assistant Lisa were so welcoming and sweet. They made sure we didn't want for anything. They offered recommendations for restaurants and sights. Jacquie makes a mean breakfast!!! Other B's and B's I have stayed at usually give you a very limited breakfast. Jacquie makes a lovely gourmet breakfast. As well as offering juice, coffee, muffins, toast, fresh fruit, granola, etc. The place itself is lovely and the rooms are charming and quaint, as well as clean....they offer many amenities. This is a must stay in Newport and when we visit again, definitely plan on staying here. Thank you Jacquie and Don for a wonderful stay!! read more

My husband and I stayed here for two nights while we were in Newport celebrating our three year wedding anniversary. This was our first bed and breakfast experience so we were a little nervous at first and did not know what to expect. However, as soon as we walked in the door we felt welcome, and comfortable. Due to Newport's popularity, especially in the summer, a lot of places I called in town were booked. The Ivy Lodge had one room left so we took it. The guy on the phone explained to me the only room they had left was the Alcove room, and that it was very small with a full size alcove bed but it was cute, had a fireplace and had it's own bathroom. I booked it anyway but was a little nervous. So, my expectations were not that high from the beginning but we actually ended up liking the the room. It was tiny but it was clean and the bed was super cozy. It was not the best room we have ever stayed in but the price was right and it was all that was left. The breakfast here is DELISH! They have water, lemonade and snacks available to you throughout the day. Most importantly the place appeared to be CLEAN. You can't beat the location, right off the posh Bellevue Ave. It was about a 15 minute walk to the center of the town. Overall it was a great experience and I would stay here again. read more

Loved the beautiful room! They had champagne and chocolate covered strawberries that were delicious! It was so clean and the house is BEAUTIFUL! There were snacks, tea, and coffee always stocked. They provided to go cups for you or fine china if you preferred to sit in the dining room. They were so helpful at check-in and they had lots of places to recommend to eat at and to site see. The cliff walk is a short walk away. It was especially beautiful to walk around post-snow. Would love to go back! read more

Hi All, I just returned home from a great trip up to Newport. My girlfriend Cate and myself stayed at the Ivy Lodge. It really couldn't have been better. Our room, The Magnolia Room, was great. The Good: Ivy Lodge is a beautiful place to stay with an ideal location for the Cliff Walk and The Elms Mansion. (Note that you will need the car to drive to the downtown wharf area.) The innkeepers Darlene and Daryl are full of useful information and you are practically required to listen to Darlene's introduction to Newport. It was very helpful. The room was clean and we loved the 2 person shower in the Satterlee Suite. The lobby will take your breath away when you walk in - with its dramatic dark wood staircase - absolutely gorgeous! There are 2 wonderful sitting rooms as well. Plenty of snacks at tea time and a good assortment of teas. You will not go hungry. The Bad: The gas fireplace in our room put out a lot of heat even when turned off- so be aware if booking this room in warmer weather. The windows did not all open, and, as with many old houses, needed to be propped open. There are incredibly noisy heaters in the bathrooms, and when a guest overhead turned it on, it woke us...sounding like a loud vacuum cleaner. If you are a light sleeper, you might also be disturbed by guests going in and out of rooms and walking up and down staircases. The front door is difficult to open and is loud. I had a hard time with these various noises, and ended up quite sleep deprived after two nights. Breakfast is an elegant affair, and If you like poached eggs, you will love their version of eggs Benedict. Daryl was kind enough to offer me eggs another way, and I had a large portion of scrambled. The tarte tatin was divine. The next morning we had a very disappointing DRY French toast. Stuffed with cream cheese and apricot- there was but a morsel of apricot and the cream cheese must have simply melted into the bread - it was so thinly applied. I would call it a great idea gone wrong. Portuguese bread simply does not absorb eggs. I felt like what I was eating was pan-fried bread with a bit of cinnamon-sugar on top. The Ugly: Innkeeping is brutally difficult work. Maintaining high standards takes full time dedication. This is an expensive place to stay in an expensive town. Here is why we probably would not feel good about returning to the Ivy. The first morning I found the coffee to be so weak I could not drink it. The next morning - same thing, so I discreetly got up from the table when I saw the young server at the side board and quietly asked her if there was any way that I could get a cup of strong coffee. She replied she would go check. A few moments later. Darlene entered the dining room (there were 8 guests seated around the large table) and loudly asked; "who is complaining about the coffee?" I sheepishly replied that I was hoping to have stronger coffee, and she announced; "This isn't Starbucks. Our AWARD WINNING coffee is like Dunkin Donuts and sorry if you don't like it. Does anyone else have a problem with it? Everyone else OKAY?" (silence) "Good." And she marched out of the room! I was reduced to feeling like a scolded child. The other guests looked as astounded as I felt, and gave me sympathetic glances. The reaction was undeserved - even if I was wrong to ask for stronger coffee. It was a shame to end our stay on a sour note. I would not feel comfortable about ever returning. read more

Romantic and cozy with a wonderful staff. We had the loft room with a skylight, fireplace and whirlpool tub. It was the perfect setting for our babymoon weekend. The house itself is nestled among mansions and is a short walk from the cliff. While I can see coming here in the fall or winter and cozying up in front of the fireplace all day, it was great to be here in the early spring and enjoy the breeze, relative quietude of the beachfront, and the just-popping blooms around the porch with a glass of lemonade and some of their delicious homemade cookies. There are slew of b&b options in this area and I felt we hit the jackpot with the price and amenties at Ivy. The only less-than-stellar thing was that when my husband chose the back-up option for breakfast, the portion was significantly smaller and he ended up hungry less than an hour later. read more
