Lobby decorated nicely for the holidays

Had a bit of a snafu with another hotel we were supposed to stay at (LaQuinta Inn & Suites Airport) that had outdoor entrances, which we did not know when we made the reservation and made us feel unsafe (see separate review of Northeast location of LaQuinta). Luckily we arrived in town when there was still time to cancel and book elsewhere, and amazingly (it happened to be New Year's Eve!) we were able to get a room directly across the street at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott at Yale and Gibson near the Albuquerque, NM, airport. First on the nice list: indoor entrances! Also it was just generally a nicely updated hotel with lovely oranges and blues (opposites on the color wheel)! It also had lovely holiday decorations in the lobby and breakfast area. It had an outdoor heated pool and hot tub, which I did not end up using because it was pretty darn cold outside (near freezing) but I'm sure would have been wonderful once I got in the water. Also we did not feel like eating out but they had some flyers at the front desk for an Italian place down the street, and that was really yummy carryout and a story for another review! ;) Another thing that was really neat was that the toiletries in the shower (shampoo, conditioner and body wash) were from a company called "Alice & Co.," and Alice was my mom's first name (she died of cancer about three years ago). It really felt like we were meant to stay there! The real kicker though was the included breakfast. It was a really delicious hot breakfast with lots of vegetarian and vegan options, which we greatly appreciated (hubby is fully vegetarian and I am mostly and we both love animals). They even went out of their way to use and advertise their exclusive use of cage-free chickens' eggs (see attached photos)! They had individual cartons of milk (the only hotel we stayed in on a weeklong trip that did), which was very handy especially for the option of taking things back to the room to eat. They also offered a dairy-free milk (oat)! Fantastic! The only thing that was kind of weird about the hotel was in the early morning hours our room phone's message light started to flash. As soon as I got dressed I went down and asked about it, and the front-desk person said that room has a habit of doing that when there is no message. My thought was, then why not fix or replace the phone? Also the outlet on the window side of the bed was missing its plate cover, which is unsafe and also unsightly (showed the previous color of paint used on the wall). Also the nightstands were teeny tiny and there was no table lamp on one side, and we both like to read in bed. The bed was not very comfortable and I had to do extensive stretching exercises in the morning before I could even bend over far enough to put my socks and shoes on and tie my shoes. Finally I do like to soak in a tub and they only had a shower, but it was a really nice newish oversized shower, which was great. Also, they provided not one but two Bibles (regular and Mormon) and also a notepad and pen, thoughtful things we found in no other hotel on our weeklong trip. Overall it was a great hotel, and we would definitely stay there again given the chance!

Clean room with modern amenities. About what you would expect from a Fairfield. The lady at the counter didn't seem happy that I asked for an extra pillow but much to her displeasure, she did get me one.

Drawers do not stay closed.

This place is literally ready to fall down. I think the building is leaning. Our drawers in the dresser will not stay closed and keep opening. The building is creaking so bad I could not sleep. The tile in the bathroom is coming off of the walls. I asked for room service and never got it. What concerns me the most is that structurally this building needs to be checked out. I will not be staying here

This is the bedbug I found the next morning

I was woken up 2 hour early by traffic, and when I turned on the light, I saw a bedbug on the bedspread of the other bed. I have never seen a bedbug before, so I looked up photos on the internet. Sure enough, it was a bed bug. I put it in a cup, but it crawled out, so I put it back in & put some water in the cup. It hung out under water for at least 30 minutes & I thought it was dead. But, no! It started crawling when I poured out the water. They can live under water?!? WTH!?! (Now I know why the bathtub drain was plugged.) When I checked out, I asked for a manager, but apparently there is no manager on duty at 8 AM on a Wednesday? So I told the desk clerk. He seemed dubious, but then I handed him the cup. I heard him say, "Oh yes, that's a b...." and then he went silent. I prodded him saying things like, "I looked up the hotos online," and such, but he had nothing to say. He didn't seem surprised though. He didn't deny it was a bedbug. No apologies, either. I also complained about the traffic noise, and mentioned that I had especially requested a quiet room. I explained that I live a2 hour drive north of Albuquerque, and that I drove down late so I could sleep until 8AM and still catch my flight. I could have woken up at 6AM at home & made my flight. AND saved the money. Again, no apology or concern. Overall, the room was not dirty, but it was not super clean, either. The sign that asks customers to leave a review on TripAdvisor even had a stain on it! This happened on the morning of Wednesday, October 24, 2018. I am completely itchy and fatigued this morning. It's an auspicious beginning to what promises to be a stressful trip.

My coworkers and I found ten cockroaches in one day.  From reviews this has been going on for months.

We have a management problem at this hotel that's manifesting itself as a cockroach problem. I'm on travel 1-2 weeks a month, typically to Albuquerque. I am also a Marriott Gold member. In all my years as a traveler, this is the first Marriott I've ever seen with an active and very visible infestation. In less than 24 hours there were eight spotted, one of which I took a picture of. A coworker at breakfast mentioned he saw two in his room. Cockroaches happen. They are part of the environment. However they are very easy to control with regular, professional pest control. It is a failure of management to not proactively manage this critical, basic issue. It is damaging to the Marriott brand. Edit: I have three coworkers staying at the hotel, also out on business. After talking, the total seen between us in just 24 hours is ten. Four were stomped on near the breakfast area by one of the braver folks. Edit: I found a review from three months ago that also mentions a cockroach problem. Apparently, this problem is pervasive. Edit: This place is an entomologist's dream. Collectively we've observed three distinct types of cockroaches as well as a small, black beetle in the hotel. Interestingly, the black beetles, both alive and dead, are all over the lobby in large numbers.

Their laundry area

We booked because Marriott has good name, we were so disappointed by this hotel. We asked for change for laundry. They had no tokens. Next morning. Not tokens, and one of the laundry wasnt working either. The pool area was ridiculous. I felt like we were in a horror movie. Everything was wrong. I called customer service and havent called me 3 weeks later. They dont care at all of their customers! .

I was in town from Denver visiting for my nephew's graduation. We had reservations for a Friday…read moreevening. When we walked onto the patio and took in those sweeping views of the Sandias, I was ready to love this place. Los Poblanos has all the ingredients of a truly special dining experience: a gorgeous setting, a thoughtful farm-to-table ethos, and a menu that promises something above the ordinary. Which is exactly why the evening's annoying missteps were so disappointing. Service was well intentioned but unpolished. Our waiter seemed overwhelmed and, at times, unfamiliar with the menu -- a problem when guests are asking genuine questions about the food and wine. We ordered bread which came before our drinks were served. Wine service was inconsistent. I ordered an Albariño by the glass - 6 oz. My sister ordered the Cabernet listed on the menu as a recommended pairing for her entrée, priced at $11. After we placed our drink orders, the waiter returned to inform her that the menu price was incorrect -- the wine was actually $18. She agreed to proceed. He then asked whether she wanted "a half glass or a full glass," which is an oddly imprecise question at a restaurant whose menu specifies pours in 3, 6, and 9 oz increments. She said half glass. What arrived was 3 oz of wine in a small serving carafe, which the waiter simply poured into her glass -- no bottle presented, no taste offered. My own Albariño, by contrast, was brought to the table in the bottle with a proper taste before pouring. The disparity in service between the two of us was striking. A simple, clear statement -- "3 oz of this wine is $18, not $11; would you still like it?" -- would have resolved everything cleanly. Instead, the vague "half or full glass" framing left my sister without the information she needed to make an informed choice. For what it's worth, the wine itself was extraordinarily tannic -- borderline undrinkable -- and I would have sent it back. My nephew ordered a top shelf whiskey. The waiter told him "we don't have that". My nephew said "it's on your menu" to which the waiter responded "oh, let me check on that". There seemed to be too many instances of the waiter running back to the bar to check on stuff. Anyway, it was available. The waiter apologized. We ordered the bread which was served before our drinks arrived. Food took about an hour which is fine - I don't have an issue with that but during that time we never saw the waiter again. I ordered the soup of the day - potato and leek which was delicious. Followed by the blackberry salad, which was my main course. Both arrived simultaneously, with the salad placed in front of me and the soup set to the side as an afterthought. At a restaurant at this price point, the expectation that soup precedes salad is not an eccentricity -- it is simply correct service. When I expressed my surprise, the servers seemed genuinely puzzled, which suggests this may be a training gap rather than an isolated incident. As for the salad itself -- it was pleasant, but pleasant is not enough here. The blackberry salad was the kind of thing you might enjoy at a well-run casual chain: competently assembled, inoffensive, and forgettable. At a farm-to-table restaurant with access to exceptional local ingredients, I expect the plate to reflect that -- more intentional presentation, more layered flavors, something that is more elevated than what was presented. This one didn't. The gap between the setting and what landed on the table was wider than it should have been. My sister and nephews ordered the filet mignon and rib eye. Both arrived pre-sliced -- a presentation trend that has made its way into fine dining, though one that divides opinion. My concern, beyond personal preference, is practical: sliced meat loses heat faster, and at roughly $80 per entrée, guests should receive their steak in the condition that best showcases it. The quality was good, not exceptional. Los Poblanos is a restaurant with genuine promise and a setting that few can match. The concept is right; the execution needs work. The issues I encountered -- inconsistent wine service, course sequencing, and a discombobulated waiter-- are not kitchen problems. They are fixable. I hope the restaurant takes that seriously, because the bones here are excellent and the experience should be too.
