    Matcha Latte

Not sure why it's so highly rated and raging reviews. Both our drinks were just ok. My husband had the shaken espressos banana dates flavor and I had the match. Nothing fancy or out of the world. Except the total bill of course lol. Overpriced. We only had a coffee here coz it is so hot today in Chicago that hubby wanted to have something cold. It is a cute place, I'll give that. Service is quick.

Hit up Fairgrounds after a class in the Chicago Athletic Association. Had a delicious coffee, and baristas were very nice. It's a very small space - perfect for pick up and go. There are a few seats, but it's pretty tight. They were a little slow BUT my drink did end up coming out well. I've enjoyed their other locations where there's a bunch more space to sit and chill.

Connected to the hotel, also next to the elevators that lead up to Cindy's. Conveniently located across from Cloud Gate. Ordered: Vietnamese cold brew 2.5/5 - was expecting more of a Vietnamese coffee taste with condensed milk. It's just a cold brew with no elements or resemblance of Vietnamese coffee. Iced Honey lavender latte 5/5 - on par, delicious. Pickup 2/5 Order came out separately. 1st they called my name and gave me 1 drink. I had to ask them which drink it was, the barista had to look it up on the system although he just handed it to me 5 seconds ago. Confirmed it was the honey lavender latte. I took the drink and left the counter to give my wife her drink. As I was giving it to her I heard the other barista call out "Vietnamese cold brew" and not a name, then another patron went up to take the drink. I then went back to the counter and waited for my Vietnamese cold brew. 30 secs later barista calls out "I have another Vietnamese cold brew" and she hands it to me, I ask is this for Nathan ( my name) and she says I don't know. I looked at it and it's a small. I ordered a large. So they called the other patron back and ask if he ordered a large, he didn't and ordered a small. He brings the drink back to the counter and gives it to me while the small goes to him. I just think they should keep the orders together and call them out by name to avoid the confusion.

This is a solid coffee spot to stop in and stroll before wandering over to Millennium park across the street. This location is in the Chicago Athletic Club Hotel and has its own entrance from Michigan Ave. It has a limited amount of seating available but it is worth walking around to check out the marble staircases and mosaic-tiled interiors. The coffee is solid and they have a rotating selection of beans! I would even grab some beans to roast myself at home.

Vietnamese cold brew and the Grilled Cheese & tomato soup combo

I love the proximity of Fairgrounds to my office; is very convenient to grab lunch or a quick coffee from there. The ambiance is fun - a little industrial with a good soundtrack. Today, I ordered the Vietnamese cold brew & a grilled cheese and tomato soup. If you're looking for a rich, punchy Vietnamese coffee, this isn't it. While I do appreciate the mint and cinnamon in the drink, it bears very little resemblance to Vietnamese coffee. The grilled cheese & tomato soup are on point, however. At $11, it's easily one of their menu's tastiest combos.

My finger after getting smashed by their door

Please be cautious if you attend this location of Fairgrounds. I love Fairgrounds and have patronized several of their locations. This was my first time attending this location. The door slams violently, which I was unaware of. I was unable to get my hand out of the door fast enough and it smashed my right middle finger. The staff said, "I'm sorry" and eventually got me a grocery bag with some ice in it. I didn't even get a coffee and nothing further was done to make the situation better. Please if you go to this location be extremely cautious of the slamming door. Below is a picture of my finger after the fact.

Wandered into Fairgrounds craving a light iced tea or coffee on this hot summer Sunday. Loved the vibes and stayed to do some work. The drink came out so quick and tasted great! The floral matcha balanced well with the strawberry. Happy I came in!

Probably the best matcha latte I have ever had. Definitely not cheap (I ordered the ceremonial grade, ended up being 7$) but well worth it.

The Pistachio Cake Donut for some reason was texturally firmer and drier than the other. Unfortunately, the fried donuts were all misses. The dough was just really dense and none of the toppings really hit. The Glazed Donut just made me sad that the dough was bad and the bacon on the Maple Bacon Donut wasn't crispy, so you got a cold, chewy, greasy bite that wasn't super pleasant. The chopped dough pieces in the Apple Fritter were also oddly firm instead of soft. For a place with rave reviews, I was pretty bummed by the donuts, but maybe the fried chicken sandwich is where it's at.

We had a lovely colorful medium-sized Mojo Shrimp in tart garlic citrus mojo sauce, with sateed red onion crescents, tomato chunks, and parsley. And we had the huge slow-cooked tender shredded-beef Ropa Vieja pressed sandwich, sauced lightly with slightly-tangy creole sauce, served with platanos maduros and black beans. All of their food delightfully authentic. We liked it so much, a few days later we ate at their South Loop location, too!

As a Chinese diner, I find Cuban food surprisingly easy to enjoy. We ordered the Vaca Frita, which is basically pan-fried shredded beef. Honestly, it was quite good -- you get protein and fat from the beef, plus some fiber from the vegetables. Instead of the fried potatoes that are so common in American meals, it came with fried plantains. It also included a mix of rice and black beans, which became savory and satisfying once everything was combined together. This is exactly what I mean when I say Cuban food works well for a Chinese palate: a balanced meal should have everything -- carbs, fiber, protein, and fat. My friend also ordered the Cafechera, which was something quite special: thinly sliced steak with a roasted aroma from coffee grounds. It was my first time trying anything like that, and I really liked it. Apparently, the leftover grounds from my pour-over coffee can do more than just sit in the fridge absorbing odors from now on. I did not try the Steak Chimichurri. My friend had been walking all day and was starving, and the dish disappeared from the table in less than five minutes. I suppose that counts as a compliment to the chef. The Shrimp Ceviche Salad was also very good, though this may be one of those dishes that can confuse some Chinese diners at first because the acidity is quite strong. Back home, we are more used to salads with creamy dressings, Thousand Island, or vinaigrette. A dressing dominated by lemon or lime juice can be difficult for some of my companions who have only recently arrived in the US, but personally, I loved it, haha. The restaurant is not very large, but it has both tables and bar seating. Whether you just want to grab a quick sandwich or come by in the evening for a drink, it feels like a very good fit. Unfortunately, we did not get to have a drink that day because the restaurant was closing early for Independence Day. All the tableware in my photos was also in pickup mode, which was a shame -- no chance to take any pretty food photos this time.
