Other reviewers have mentioned that the cupcakes lack freshness and flavor, and I completely agree. I was also disappointed by their selection for a Saturday afternoon. Maybe 9 or so varieties, and they didn't have their novelty Buffalo hot wing cupcake, something I would expect them to carry on a weekend. I picked the Elvis cupcake--banana cake with peanut butter frosting, honey drizzle, and bacon on top. I was excited but disappointed. The banana cake was bland and tasted as though it was baked, frozen, then thawed that morning to frost and put out for sale. It didn't "wow" me and was a bit dry. On the positive side, there was a generous helping of the peanut butter frosting, but that, too, could have been a little more "peanut-buttery." The store was nicely decorated but empty of people. The staff was friendly, but the people who work there are not going to keep me coming back-- it will be because the cupcakes are out-of-this-world. I had been following Fairy Cakes for a while on social media, so I knew they made some pretty amazing looking cupcakes and cakes, but wow, they hit it out of the park on some birthday cookies for my friend's boat themed birthday party. I wanted to razz him on turning 38, but the only idea I could come up with was cookies shaped like AARP cards. I asked the staff if they had any ideas and received a call a few days before they were making the cookies to gain approval. Not only was their idea perfect, but also perfectly executed. A very cute and spacious shop with plenty of seating. I could definitely see having a kids party here, though I didn't notice much in the way of kid-sized furniture. The air conditioning was very welcomed after playing tennis on a very hot afternoon. The offerings were nicely displayed and labeled. We asked the friendly young lady behind the counter which cupcake flavors are typically the most popular. My friend decided on the popular "creamsicle" and I opted for the "brown sugar cake with cinnamon buttercream". I felt that the brown sugar cake had a consistency more like that of a muffin. It had a nice spice to it and wasn't overly sweet. I tried the creamsicle and thought that it was a bit too sweet for my liking. Both the cake and frosting were quite sweet (we even left half of the frosting uneaten....gasp!). Overall, it's a great little place and a nice addition to the Parkside area. Although this was my first visit, I've been following them on Facebook for quite some time and I know that they are doing a very good business there. It was between the Loganberry or Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. I was talked into the cookie dough one, and holy crap, that was a phenomenon cupcake. The frosting tasted just like cookie dough, and the cupcakes was moist. The bottom had a 'cookie cake-like' texture that was unreal. Easily the best cupcake I've ever had in my life...and I've had my fair share of cupcakes in my day. This was the first one that ever made me say "wow". I went in and dropped $25 on cupcakes which I must say was the only downside to my whole experience (or I'm just a fatty). The cupcakes were great in interesting flavors (and bigger than my girl Zilly's!). I must say... with enthusiasm... that I do believe Firefly's were a better cupcake! This adorable cupcake spot is right in my neighborhood and saw the storefront getting prettied up for an opening and I knew I had to stop in. On a lovely fall day my fiance and I were talking a walk in the 'hood and noticed that the cupcakery was open! We popped in and sampled their brown sugar cake and cranberry frosting which was really tasty, but maybe a little sweet. We purchased a red velvet cupcake and a vanilla cupcake. The red velvet was really tasty and rich and the cream cheese frosting was very rich. I loved my vanilla cupcake as well. This space is very cute. Have you seen Extreme makeover home edition? It reminds me of a slightly lower budget version of a little girl's room that they might do. Pretty fabric curtains, purple walls decorated with white tree silhouettes and Christmas lights, a good number of clean white tables, some bar stools along the wall, and some soft cozy arm chairs. The selection of cupcakes (at about 2pm on Sunday, maybe it's different at other times) was very limited. All the cupcakes seemed to be either vanilla or chocolate and most of the frostings were vanilla or chocolate. I got a brown sugar cake with a chocolate butter cream frosting. It was a little dry and just tasted like a white cake. The frost was fine, but just a simple chocolate butter cream like what I make myself. The employees looked like high school girls. They were very pleasant, and gave me my cupcake on a cute white square plate with a fork. They also made sure to offer me a glass of water with the cupcake when I didn't order a drink. Over all the place is whimsical, the atmosphere is nice, and the staff was friendly. However, the recipe I tried needs work. Potentially others are better. I would want to see more of a variety of flavors beyond chocolate, vanilla, brown sugar (that tastes like vanilla), and red velvet (which is basically vanilla with a lot of food coloring). read more

Have only been in once but craving more. Was at the Zoo with my mom and my 4 year old son and was caught by the sign they had cleverly placed on the zoo side of parkside inviting us in. There was also a funfetti cupcake, the cupcake was so rich with flavor. The price for the cupcakes can range from $2.50-$3.50 which might seem expensive to some, but it was totally worth the price. I first found Fairycakes at the Main Place Farmers market. I was very impressed by their style and cupcakes, although I never bought one. When I was planning my wedding I set up an appointment with Mo, co-owner. She was absolutely the greatest to work with, and my husband and I really enjoyed the tasting she did for us. After having a free taste test of different combinations of frosting and cake flavors, we went with apple pie cake with salted caramel frosting. And pumpkin spice cake with vallina frosting. Sadly underwhelmed by this shop, and I'm easy to please when it comes to sweets. The décor was a sort of "welcome to my tacky pre-teen fantasy." The cupcakes were non-tasty to the point where my kids could not eat them, which is almost an achievement in reverse. The whole ordering process was simple, everyone at the store is friendly, it's clean and welcoming, and my 4 dozen mini-cakes were the hit of the meeting! My personal favorite is the mocha chip, but the chocolate chip cookie dough buttercream is pretty heavenly as well, and the cherry chip cakes are a welcome throwback to my childhood. Recently I went in to buy some cupcakes for my mother's birthday. She really liked the "Irish Carbomb" cupcake (so do I) but unfortunately they did not have any in stock. That didn't stop me from not buying anything... all of the other cupcakes looked just as good! I purchased the salted caramel, a cookie dough cupcake, and a standard vanilla cupcake. The frosting was delicious! So good!! The actual cake part I was a little disappointed in that it tasted kind of dry. For $2.50-3.75 a cupcake I was expecting it to be a little more fresh? I visited Fairy Cakes for the first time last week to satisfy my sweet tooth and absolutely loved it. The inside of the store is clean, inviting and super cute. They didn't have much of a selection because they were working hard on private orders that day, but what they did have was delicious. I tried the chocolate stout cupcake with Bailey's frosting and it was aaaaamazing. The frosting was to die for. Not too sugary, super creamy and amazing. And it was a pretty substantial cupcake too! You can really never go wrong with one of their red velvet cupcakes, which is on the menu every day to my knowledge. I really like their blueberry pancake cupcake with maple frosting and bacon pieces. It's really one of the best things to break up your work day once in a while. I do suggest stopping by on a weekday or earlier in the day so all options will be available. Sometimes on weekends and in good weather, they can sell out due to the crowds and families across the street. I think their cupcakes are passable but not worth the price. I was quite let down by their flavor combinations and the way those flavors came through as a finished product. I had four different cupcakes and each one was fairly similar in texture and taste. The frosting is too abundant, sweet and lacks a punch of flavor to enhance the cake. The cake was actually a bit dry and again the flavors didn't come through I would have to say a run of the mill cake not worth the hefty price tag. I think the place was cute and is in a great location for success I just wish someone at Fairy Cakes would develop a more evolved palate and take some adventurous risks. Being in business is a risk why not jump in the pool instead of just wading your feet. I will make a second attempt at a tasting soon to confirm my review. I do wish them the best as I do anyone that has the perseverance to open a independently owned business. So let's hope they make the jump! read more

We purchased these pricey cupcakes for our son's first birthday party. I am bit of a cupcaker myself, and perhaps that lent to my great disappointment with these cakes. The flavors- we chose the brown sugar cake with vanilla frosting and chocolate cake with raspberry frosting. The brown sugar was decent, edible. Not terribly flavorful nor moist, but okay. The chocolate was pretty awful. And the raspberry frosting? No raspberry flavor, but instead tasted of way too much almond extract. Eww. After the party, my sweets-loving family wanted nothing to do with the extra cupcakes (highly unusual behavior!) Worst of all, my son's "smash cake" (a very large cupcake) was SO dry. It crumbled into a million pieces as soon as he tried to eat it. Boo. Fortunately, being a one-year-old he really did not need more than a couple bites. If I can muster up some time, I will do his cupcakes myself next time. read more

Prior to opening the actual location, they were still taking orders. My mom ordered a dozen to have at the house the day of my wedding and everyone was impressed. Buffalo wing cupakes, loganberry frosting - you can tell they love buffalo! The frosting is what makes these cupcakes - super rich though so be sure to have a cup of coffee or water with it. The cake itself is a bit on the dry side - thats the only thing I would change and the only reason they didn't get a full 5 stars.
