Our server was very nice. The restaurant was clean. The vegetable soup was unlike any soup I've ever had - and not in a good way. Dried up veggies, very little broth, and served in a small shallow side-dish bowl. Everything was very greasy and the grease did not taste like it was changed recently. Reuben was ok. Sunday chicken special had thick gravy and I'm still wondering whether that was chicken that I ate. Not kidding. The stuffing that came as part of the chicken dinner was good. Reminded us of a greasy spoon kind of place with marginal food. We won't be going back. Famous Amos was a solid choice. We went for Saturday breakfast. The ambiance is old school southern diner - no fancy specials or flavors. Just stick to your ribs and fill you up southern cooking. The biscuit were the best I've had in a while- a little crust on the outside with soft buttery goodness on the inside. My crew says the sausage gravy was equally delicious. I had the fried tomatoes with grits, toast, and eggs over easy. All done well. Service was workmanlike and prompt. This place has been here forever. We came here pretty early 6:45am. We were acknowledged immediately and told to choose any seat in this section. Sat down and our waiter Craig took my immediate drink order and brought my hot coffee creamer and sweetener and our menus. Took a minute to order I got the pecan waffle and eggs with bacon. He got the pancakes and with eggs and sausage. I tell you Waffle House who? IHOP who? My waffle was perfectly crispy outside and soft inside and no skimping on the pecans. The pancakes were so fluffy. The eggs cooked perfectly and my bacon (which I find is sporadic to get it just the way I want) was exceptionally crispy and soft at the same time like I hoped and made me happy. I forget about this place but haven't had a bad experience here yet. I have to keep this place in mind anytime I want a delicious breakfast. read more

The food here is actually very good, it's the servers who made it only a 3 star rating. They are slow to do pretty much anything, except put the check on the table. Refills on drinks must be asked for. And if you want dessert don't expect your server to ask you if you want anything. She'll bring you the check and you'll have to ask yourself. Cute old style diner. Excellent friendly service! Family dining experience with comfortable booths and old fashioned decor. I almost ordered the wagon wheel breakfast with eggs, grits, meat pancakes etc but another guest had the shrimp and grits and it looked too good to pass up. Oh my am I am so glad ! Shrimp and grits heaven with a perfect mild creole sauce and fresh diced tomatoes! My husband ordered chicken and mushrooms with onions and cornbread. Met a friend for lunch today. We both ordered the club sandwiches. I prefer mine with only two pieces of bread and chose Turkey and bacon with fries. The fries were lovely, hot and perfectly crispy. The bacon was also cooked to perfection. No skimpy deli Turkey either. It was so big I could hardly fit it in my mouth. My friend opted for the normal three slices of bread but wanted all four of the meat choices. She had Turkey, bacon, ham and roast beef. Also with fries which were lovely, hot and crispy. She asked for ranch to dip them in and was provided that without a problem. Our waitress was excellent, keeping our drinks full without asking. She came back to check on us frequently but was not over intrusive. Overall, I was very impressed with my first trip here. After this service I'm sure I'll be back. Truly one of the GREATS in Jacksonville Diners! There aren't many Famous Amos restaurants left, but this location is worth the visit. The service is fantastic here and their food is amazing. Husband and I stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday morning and was surprised on how little staff there was to accomodate almost a full house with a few bigger parties seated. Logistics seemed to be running smooth for how busy it looked. We walked in and it was a seat yourself welcome. We nestled into a booth and did a once over of the menu. Great value on the meals compared to most chain breakfast restaurants and I could say they didn't skim on any options you wanted. We ordered the typical staples, pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, side of biscuit and gravy, home fries and a few other sides. We came hungry and our little booth ran out of space for the plates. Overall enjoyed our dine in experience and will probably do another visit to try their lunch and dinner options. I've been to FA many times and enjoyed the food and service. However, recently they've become slack in having enough people to wait on tables in the evening. Last night we waited more than an hour before getting our food. Prior to that, we ordered drinks and waited more than 30 minutes before flagging down another waitress and asked to be moved to another table because we couldn't get the attention of our waitress. After we moved, it was the same thing. We had to flag the waitress or actually walk up to the back counter to ask for more water! we went here because they were reliable for good food. Not any more. We both ordered the Country Fried Steak with home fries, she added collards to her order. The steak was past its due date and the home fries were cooked in bad oil. the half and half tea and water with lemon were good. the collards were not seasoned nor were they prepared right. My husband and I have not eaten at a Famous Amos in over a decade and decided to give this one a go since we were already in the neighborhood. First impressions? Clean, smells good, and super friendly, attentive waitresses. Coffee was hot and satisfying, and while early, there was plenty of seating. We kept it simple, and each ordered the same meal (called a 2x4 special): 2 eggs (over medium), 4 slices of bacon, grits and toast (but I had a biscuit instead). The plate came out picture perfect and everything was exactly the way we wanted it. No lie, no exaggeration. The grits were creamy, the bacon was crisp, the eggs absolutely textbook and the biscuit was soft & fluffy. We waddled out of there stuffed and satisfied (my husband even had to finish my grits because I couldn't lol). I seriously could not ask for a better, simpler breakfast for the price. read more

I was introduced to this restaurant by my late wife and we have been eating here on and off since the 1980s. I stopped in today and ordered lunch. At 9.95 for an entree two sides and a biscuit it is really a great value! The server,Craig,was very friendly and attentive. The food itself was plentiful, fresh, seasoned right and just the right temperature. I have had dessert here in the past and it has the same high standards. I was too full this time. One of the worst restaurants I've been to in a long time. Hot roast beef looked like lunch meat thrown on a piece of bread slightly covered with the cheapest jar sauce you could find. Chicken and dumplings were nothing I like I've ever seen before. A 2.5 inch strip of raw dough over very little shredded chicken that had no flavor. Took a very long time to receive our meal. The food was excellent the wait staff was prompt and courteous and helpful. I was very hungry after a long night of working and got a very big breakfast of hash browns, smoked sausage, eggs over easy, and four pancakes. Just left and while the food was good the customer service was terrible. First off there was 2 of us and the only table available was a booth. Both the host and the waitress were extremely rude and rushed us as soon as we got our food. We got our receipt and she wanted us to pay as soon as we got our food. Then every 2 or 3 minutes the host kept looking over and rolling her eyes at us and snapping her neck back and stomping off. We werent even there 45 minutes and got rushed out and we had to wait on a togo order at that. Definetly wont be coming back. She needs to work on her attitude. Also the menu is outdated. As soon as you walk in there's a strong odor that to me smells of mold. Although I wouldn't necessarily say the food is bad nothing about it is good either. Everything we had was very bland and the dessert tasted like they just popped open a can and put it on a plate, it wasn't even warm much less hot. Of all of the places I've eaten this is by far the sketchiest. I wanna call Gordon Ramsey to see what goes on behind the scene in this place because I bet it's not good. The only redeeming grace is that the staff was friendly but you don't frequent a restaurant just because they have good staff. As I went to the restroom I had an opportunity to see behind the drink area and slightly in the cooking area amd they looked nice and clean. The service was great. My waitress was wonderful and paid attention to a number of tables, guaranteeing their needs were met. inside is small but you have room to manuever and eat comfortably. They have a fish available for those that don't eat meat on what they call the 24/7 menu.
