Despite the bustling crowd, I opted to sit at the bar during my visit to Nicole's on the River. While it did take a bit longer than usual for my food to arrive due to the high volume of people, I must say, the wait wasnt too bad and I was entertained by the ladies working at the restaurant. I ordered a "simple" breakfast, and Nicole's certainly did not disappoint. The food was delicious, perfectly showcasing their skill even with classic breakfast fare that "can't be messed up." The eggs were cooked just right, the grits and hash browns were flavorful and cheesy, and the bacon was crispy and satisfying. The cook in the kitchen knew her spot because she was putting out food left and right. I've been here numerous times and would normally give it a 4-5. I've brought family and friends and recommended it to a hundred people. Today I take back all of my accolades. I give it a negative 3. All due to the owner Nicole. I ordered a grilled grouper sandwich and was given a blackened one, I can't eat spicy food anymore because of my stomach condition. We already had waited a very long time, but it was busy. The waitress took it back and it took another 10 minutes for my sandwich, ok I guess. But... It was in the same basket with the original fries that are now ice cold. I think it was the same bun too. The owner, Nicole said yeah I did that without an attitude. She acted like she didn't care about anything other than having a really bad attitude. I've seen other reviews where people have said the same thing about her. I didn't believe it until I experienced it first hand. Food is normally about a 4, I like to support mom and pop owned businesses. This owner seems to not really give a Sh!t about her customers. Went here for brunch one day with a friend. I had the roast beef sandwich. It was disappointing to say the least. The meat was overcooked and rubbery. Really the only flavorful part of the meal were the fries, but that's because I added salt and dipped them in mayonnaise--hey, don't judge me! They're delicious that way! We were not greeted at all when we came in (it was busy, but not crazy busy). It fell to a customer who had sympathy for us to tell us to seat ourselves. The wait staff ignored several customers who came and sat down. Our food, despite just being biscuits and gravy and an English muffin, took over 30 min. to get to us. For the price the food wasn't bad. We love to frequent mom and pop places, but I wouldn't say I would be itching to come back. The grits were a little dry. I got a breakfast burrito and I really like it when they are grilled, but this one was not. It was however warm. If you add cheese to anything, it is a slice of Kraft cheese. My preference is shredded cheese, but again that is my preference and some people may enjoy the cheese they use. The bacon and other breakfast meats were cooked well. This place is a awesome delight hidden from view but know by the locals. If you have not been you are missing out on great food and that is an understatement. The buffet is country food for $10 and every vegetable cooked to southern perfection. Fried chicken and fish and three desserts to choose from....Oh my! Today our servers was Karen and she was amazing. She was on the spot bringing the drinks and filling them up when they got low. Southerners do drink alot of tea! If you go in here definitely ask for Karen cause she is so friendly and you will love her! Today the group at the table had everything from breakfast to 1 pound burgers and it was all fabulous. We wish we lived close enough to come back each week, but maybe we can make the trip to visit Karen and the wonderful food once a month. Great place to eat. I had a blackened fresh fish sandwich with my unsweet tea. Great cocoanut cake for dessert and a tasty cup of coffee. Nice seafaring atmosphere with comfy seating. Pancakes for grandson who enjoyed them. The wifey had a big burger which she thoroughly enjoyed both in the restaurant and later at home. Took about 2 minutes to be noticed by a waitress, as there is no host and no sign if you are able to seat yourself or not. Finally came over and got a table cleaned off and we were sat at a 4 top table. Very tight fit in the entire restaurant. People bumping into table every 5 seconds- not a great experience. Prices are average for what you get. Menu is small. Not much to pick from for breakfast. Service was average- at best. Had to get up and get another menu due to there not being enough at our 4 top. We were in the area and desired some breakfast! Our friends told us about this little hole in the wall. It is tucked away in a strip mall. You go in and seat yourself. The waitress was pleasant and was accommodating. We ordered coffee and orange juice to start. My husband ordered French toast and he said the French toast came out really good eggs scrambled with cheese and those were cooked to perfection as well. He said he thoroughly enjoyed it. I got the breakfast with two eggs I added cheddar cheese and it came with grits which were great consistency. I opted to get a side of biscuits and gravy. I would have liked to seen The cheese to have been melted more instead of just the heat from the eggs melting it, but that being said it was still good. The biscuits and gravy were very good. I would definitely recommend this little place if you're in the area. They do sell lunch although I'm not quite sure that I can recommend anything there because again we were only there for breakfast. If I'm ever in Orange Park again we will definitely come back. When proffered the ADA.gov website, owner declared she knew the law, and since I did not have a service dog ID and my dog was not vested - neither of which is required under the ADA statute- we could just leave. It comes with 1 side for $8.25, but they charge extra for substituting to get Fries?! Aren't Burgers and Fries kind of a given?! Now the negatives.....Sweet Tea was barely sweet and was chalky tasting. My table was still dirty (crumbs on the table) from the previous customer and my server was absent for most of my meal, well until I needed a refill on my Dr Pepper that I traded my Tea for. I went here for a salad on my lunch break. I'm not one to write reviews, but I found the quality exceptional for the price. I tend to "judge " a restaurant by a salad just because it's usually pretty basic. I feel like if a restaurant takes the time to house make their dressings, they tend to put effort in all the details. While, I can't confirm if it was in fact-homemade, it certainly did taste so. When you enter Nicole's, you get that country feeling...quaint, quiet...locally owned. The owner cheerfully greets you in a food-stained shirt, excited that he just finished making the egg wash. You can sit wherever you want, and then get ignored by the waitress when you politely tell her hello. The water tasted like it came from the toilet. The grits did not have any flavor. The biscuit was hard; had I thrown it at the window it would've broken the glass. Their cheesy home fries did not take much effort. Cut some red potatoes and place a slice of Great Value cheese on top. Warm for thirty seconds. Serve to guest. Service was horrible, been a regular for years ago with my co workers and there is one waitress you always gives the worst service. This time had part of our order waiting for 15 minutes and never came back to check on us or let us know how much longer. When my co worker went up to see where the rest of our order was at our waitress raised her voice at him about how there was no one in the kitchen. I could hear her from the kitchen to the other side of the restaurant talking to him and then she started talking about us to other customers loud enough so we could hear her. She was being very rude even after that when she had to check us out when he wanted a refill. She just walked away and when we asked another server for the refill, she came up behind to tell us she didn't offer to refill because they didn't have tea made yet.
