My friend in town visiting picked up a little breakfast for us from here a little while ago so I decided to bring another friend of mine here for a breakfast dine-in instead of the previous to-go method. Although the wait for sitting down at a table was short, it was then maybe 30+ min for just some eggs, bacon, pancakes and a Belgian waffle after already having our drinks delivered. We took our daughter to the country cabin for lunch, Saturday. The building looks like an old Sonny's restaurant and it's pretty nice on the inside. We waited a pretty long time for the food; It was longer than you would normally expect to wait...especially for the number of patrons. I'm glad we waited for the food because it was very good. My wife and daughter got the club sandwich with fried okra and Cole slaw. I got the country chef salad with grilled chicken. Our server was very good, and attentive. Came in town for a night and wanted to get something that wasn't a greasy fast food chain. This restaurant is a small family owned business with nice staff and it provided a pleasant atmosphere. I will not hesitate to leave a dirty restaurant, but this place was clean and provided a pleasant experience. A lot of the food is fried. This was a good find. Over on the west side heading to sale but wanted a nice breakfast. Parking lot was kind of full so thought what the heck. Immediately seated and was brought coffee. Candyce ordered the bacon cheese omelet with grits. I order my usual of 2 eggs hash browns and cheese with biscuits with sausage. The order came out hot and fairly fast. They have done a great job of renovating the old bar-b-q spot. The Southwest chicken is a tasty choice and they serve breakfast all day which makes my wife happy because she can eat pecan waffles 24/7. Had a great dinner today. The food was so fresh and delicious. The portion sizes were much larger than I expected. The pricing is very good for the amount of food your receive. My wife wanted to try something different and we thought maybe since they took over the old Sonny's they are probably doing something right. I go the Sunday special which is the pot roast. I assumed it would be pork with carrots and potatoes. Instead it was some pieces of pork chops, some pork fat and stuffing. I got mashed potatoes, green beans and fried pickles for my sides. The mash potatoes were not fresh, couldn't be. The green beans tasted as if they opened a can of green beans then dumped it into a pot and turned it to boil and then served it that way, not even a hint of salt or flavoring. The fried pickles were decent although a bit greasy. I did not finish the pork roast. It had more flavor than the sides but the pork chops were a bit dry. read more

Visited the Country Cabin with my BFF after a non-productive shopping experience so we were very hungry. We both ordered the Pot Roast with carrots and potatoes. I ordered cucumbers, field peas and the chocolate cake. The meal came with biscuits which were warm and fluffy. The pot roast was tender and the carrots and potatoes were cooked just as tender with all the juices of the Pot Roast. I dipped my biscuit in the Pot Roast gravy, sopping up all of the juicy goodness. The field peas tasted fresh picked and were seasoned good but could have used a bit more salt for my preference. No points taken off for my preference as they were still very delishious. The cucumbers were also fresh off the vine. Salt, pepper and vinegar and so good. And lastly the chocolate cake. Most and good and chocolatey, it was the perfect way to end the lunch. The nice thing about the lunch was that you did get alot of food, but it was not "too much" food where you felt like you needed to roll out of the restaurant. I've been hearing about this place for sometime now from regulars who have patronized this restaurant for years. They have two other locations and I've been told that they are both solid places to eat. My boy and I came for breakfast which is a rare meal for us in any occasion. I have to say that our waitress, Brandy, was exceptional. She was 100% friendly, helpful, professional, fast and efficient. She knew the menu and even better she knew the food and made recommendations. Really great service! FYI: The menu is massive and they pretty much have something for everyone. Secondly, our meals were delicious. My spinach, bacon & feta cheese omelette was seasoned and cooked perfectly. And the grits & English muffin were nice accompaniments. Simple yet done very well. Recommended. My boyfriend went for the three pancakes and an order of both bacon and sausage [all a la carte]. Then he asked for real butter and our server brought two generous containers out to us right away while our breakfast carbs were still hot and waiting patiently to be eaten. An extra star for having BUTTER on hand for those of us who prefer it to margarine and other fake butter spreads. And if you serve breakfast [in my book] you should have butter. I've been here twice now. It's a really quaint southern restaurant. My first time I got the grandma's special with french toast. Today I had the country man with a Belgian waffle. Our server was great the first time. This time our server was really slow. They weren't that busy even though it's St. Patrick's Day. But she just seemed frazzled and out of sorts. My eggs had a bit of a plastic after taste to them which was unappealing and my bacon wasn't as crisp as I would have liked it to be. But the waffle was fine. My significant other liked his meal, he got the same thing but had cheese in his eggs. His dad got a meat special with grits and sausage and bacon and also enjoyed his. I've tried practically everything on their lunch and dinner menus and nearly always have the same issue and it's a doozy of an issue not to mention it being a health hazard too! Country Cabin has a godawful problem with keeping their preprepared foods hot. Their soups and sides are often served at or just above room temperature and even though they always thanked me for pointing it out, they use the same lame excuse every time of "if nobody tells us we have no way of knowing the hot bar is not working" baloney!!!! I happen to KNOW, HEALTH CODE REQUIRES THE ROUTINE MONITORING OF THE TEMPERATURE OF THE HOT BAR! One morning when I got off work. I decided to stop by for breakfast. I was overwhelmed by the vast items on the menu they have so many to choose from. I love country fried steak so I orderd the country cabin breakfast. Food arrived and I'm ready to dive in. As I cut into the fried steak notice I had to put a little muscle into it. First bite of the steak was meh it was under seasoned and overcooked. I was disappointed. As for for everything else on my plate scrambled eggs, hash, & grits tasted good. 4/5 stars because of the overcooked & under season steak. Service is on point. Tonight we enjoyed Country Cabin Restaurant -Cedar Hills and boy was it worth it! Excellent food & excellent waitresses and the gentleman who cleaned the restrooms was very pleasant. All around family atmosphere and enjoyable hot food! We are enjoying our 25tb wedding anniversary weekend and this kicked it off just right! My hubby and I use to eat here quite often. They have good old southern comfort food. Well, they did. They still have what's known as southern comfort food... just take away the "good" part of it. Over the past few years, it's just slowly gone downhill and now we never eat there anymore. I'm pretty sure we never will again. The last few times we did eat there, our food came out to us at room temperature and was bordering on cold. Halfway through our meals the food was definitely cold at that point. Service use to be really good, but like the food, it went downhill too. The servers would take our order, bring our drinks, then the food, then we'd never see her again until she brought the check. Never came back to check on us, never got refills. Awful service from multiple servers. The inside of the place is old. Booths are ragged. Needs updating. But if they aren't going to put anymore effort into making their food tasty and hot, or have decent servers, I can't seem them spending money to spruce up the place a bit. I'm actually still shocked to see the place is still open; although, when we pass by there (often), I have noticed a severe decline in the number of cars in the parking lot. They are all kinds of negative reviews about this place but The thing people are not taking into consideration is that this is a diner on the west side of Jacksonville what are you looking for seriously. If you aren't looking for a diner environment with diner food then you should probably go to Panera down the road. I have been in here at least 40 times and haven't had a bad meal yet. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Yes it's a little bit dark yes it could use a renovation, yes it could probably use updating inside and out but it is what it is. If you're coming here to get fed you can do that quite well. The prices are very reasonable. I often get an egg white omelette in their various styles such as Philly cheesesteak or a country one with ham. They are content to let me sit in a corner with my laptop and work and keep on refilling my hot tea with a smile. I don't give them five stars because they could probably use a deep cleaning but I have never seen a bug or anything like that so I go here all the time.
