What happened to Famous Dave's? This used to be a go-to spot for my family years ago, so my wife and I decided to go back for some barbecue. Huge mistake. I can now see why Yelp Rating is so poor for them! I ordered the Ribs & Ribs combo..., half slab St. Louis-style and half slab baby backs for $32. When the food came out, the ribs were cold..., not just "sat too long" warm, but borderline refrigerated. On top of that, they were so tough I could barely pull them apart. I would have needed a steak knife just to separate the bones. Completely unacceptable for a BBQ place. I politely called the server over and explained the ribs were cold and tough. His response? "So you don't want them?" Before I could even finish answering, he grabbed the tray and said he'd take it off the bill..., and just walked away. No apology. No offer to remake the dish. No manager. Nothing. After that, we were basically ignored until I had to flag him down just to get the check. Here's what really stood out: on the receipt, there's actually a line item labeled "Recovery Dislike." That got me thinking..., how often does this happen that they've built it into their system? Another random visit and it was packed so we were seated in the bar area. Our server was running trying to keep up with a party of about 15-20 that took up the rest of the area. Food was okay - my shrimp plate was fine and kids always just get the mac and cheese, but the husband said the brisket was so tough it was inedible and had terrible heartburn that evening. We had an incredible experience at Famous Dave's last night! After a late function, I was craving wings. It was late, and options were limited in the suburbs. My friend suggested Famous Dave's, so I called to check if they had wings and what time they closed. A very friendly gentleman named Scott T answered the phone. He was incredibly kind and welcoming, letting us know they have wings and that the restaurant closed at 10 PM. When I hesitated, not wanting to delay the team from closing, Scott quickly reassured me--"It's only 9:23, its okay, come on!" He didn't even know we were just 3 minutes away! When we arrived, the team at the counter greeted us warmly and got us seated right away. Then came Jamaurion -- what an amazing server! He made us feel like VIPs while still doing his closing duties. He handled our custom orders with ease, gave great suggestions, and kept us laughing the whole time. His energy and sense of humor made the night unforgettable. The food? Absolutely delicious. Fresh, hot, and full of flavor. We even sent compliments to the chef through Jamaurion. And you could really tell the staff enjoy working together -- such a great vibe all around. We've always been fans off Famous Dave's and were sad many branches closed in recent years. The last time we ate at one was in the Wisconsin Dells last November. It was good, but not as much as here in North Riverside!!! This is a TOTALLY WOW experience, savoring the Iris Downs fried chicken feast!! The other pics are what I got...a few dry thin slices with about a teaspoon of sauce. Complete garbage. The worst service you can possibly imagine. We placed an order at 930AM on NYE for a pickup at 630PM. Sitting here for 3 hours+ with a crowd of people who also placed their orders that morning. The manager was very inconsiderate and didn't give any solution to this growing issue refusing to give his name. We had a nice time here, celebrated my Uncle's birthday (because he wanted some good BBQ) and the service was great too. I didn't have a single complaint! Our waitress was fun and very helpful with the menu. They even have deals everyday of the week (whether it's food or drinks). I had a regular fried chicken sandwich with the hottest BBQ sauce they had and it lived up to the hype... if you want to feel the heat for hours afterwards, try that hot sauce haha On top of that, our waitress gave my uncle a complimentary Birthday dessert! The fries were so good! So glad we ordered 2 sides of fries. That gets 5 stars. They were also still crispy and warm when they got here 20 minutes later. They're wedge slices. I don't know what sorcery they use. Haha The rest of the meal was okay. The value was pretty good because we were both stuffed afterwards. I didn't like the corn in the mac and cheese, I bit into a piece of corn that was tougher than expected because it was closer to the cob. The peppers in the mac and cheese can stay though. The sandwich was fine, the boyfriend liked the pickles, the sauces they provide are very good. Devil's spit is more runny than the sassy sauce, but still delivered good flavor. The ribs are pretty fatty and have cartilage. The rub they use is very good but I think it was cooked on too high heat and too quickly. The corn bread was a little dry. I wish I had honey at home to put on top. The packaging is great though. They line the boxes with aluminum foil to prevent leaks and the boxes for the food pretty well. Yesterday we ordered and purchased the Friday-Rib Tips: Til Payday which advertises 5 lbs of rib tips and 2 lbs of fries special for over $40 from the Famous Dave's located in North Riverside. What a total rip-off! Upon opening the tray we immediately realized we did not have 5 lbs of rib tips as advertised. So, to confirm what was obvious, we weighed the meat and fries on two different scales. We only had 3.7 lbs of tips. There was over a pound missing. The fries were fine in that they weighed 1.9 Ibs. We immediately called and spoke with a manager who simply offered us an appetizer without so much as an apology. His demeanor was one of disinterest which we found to be unprofessional. We requested to be compensated during our next visit for the more than a pound of missing ribs tips. The manager told us we'd need to return the entire order and have it replaced. We work in transportation and after driving all day in heavy traffic up North and in downtown Chicago, we were exhausted. Also, the restaurant is a distance from our home. I called back this afternoon and spoke with another manager and expressed our wish to have the pound replaced. Again, no apology was forthcoming. I also asked if he could add in an appetizer for the inconvenience. He offered a side of fries. It was like twisting someone's arm and why would I even need to ask this? Sheesh! My recommendation to anyone considering this special is: DO NOT ORDER FROM NORTH RIVERSIDE! THEY ARE SCAMMING CUSTOMERS ON THIS SPECIAL. Would have given a 5 Start BUT the desserts are horrible! The Key Lime Pie slice is so small and comes with NO whip cream and it doesn't even look like Key Lime Pie! Famous Dave's never disappoints! Everything from the service to food was amazing. We came on a busy Saturday so we waited about 30-35 minutes. Not bad considering the wait was originally 60-90minutes. Five or ten minutes after sitting down, a woman offered to take our drink order before our server came. She was hilarious and gave us alcoholic drink recommendations. Keisha, our server, was so sweet, patient and funny. She was patient while we decided what we wanted, gave amazing recommendations, and had great energy. We ordered the 3 meat combo (serves 2), catfish, kids burger, BBQ salad, and chicken sandwich. The kid's meal came late which was upsetting but Keisha offered my daughter an extra cookie which made her so happy. Keisha also explained to us why the food came out late and that she was working to get it out to us right away. The ribs, chicken sandwich, and catfish was amazing as usual! Late Post From Saturday... I had a wild and crazy adventure on Saturday @Famous Dave's by North Riverside. I stopped in for a mid day lunch. I had a birthday coupon where you buy an entree and get the other entree for 1/2 off. I had placed my order and handed the cashier my coupon. She called the manager to assist her with applying my coupon. The manager came from the back and stated that the credit card machine had just went down. But he still made an effort to run my credit card just to make sure. I ended up having to pay cash for my food. Lucky that I had cash on me this day. The manager rung me up and took my cash payment and just walked away in a hurry. I took my receipt off the register and headed for the ladies room. I found it a bit odd that a Manager would be so rude to a customer. When I made it back the Manager Daren. Finally got his name gave me a coupon for a free dessert due to the credit card being down. Ok nice. Thank you. My order was ready by that time. I placed a take out order so I got my food and left. I get home and looked into my purse to get something out of my wallet. I couldn't find my wallet. I ran down stairs to look in my car and it wasn't to be found. The last place I had it was at Famous Dave's. I called quickly and explained that I was just there and I think that I lost my wallet. The young girl behind the counter remembered me. She was so kind to go to the ladies room to see if it was inside one of the stalls. She came back no luck of finding my wallet. I asked to speak to a manager. I explained again what the situation was he took down my contact info and went to view the tapes. He called me back within 15 minutes and stated that he viewed the tapes and he saw where I had placed my wallet back inside my purse. I asked could I cone view thw tape cause there was no way I put my wallet back into my purse. I was very upset but he assured me that I left with my wallet I relaxed myself and retrace my steps in my mind. Something told me to look near my bed. Sure enough oops sorry felt so bad here was my mini wallet near my bed. I instantly called Daren back to let him know that I had found my wallet. I apologize to him and also thanked him for going way and beyond to help me. Even when I was upset he spoke calm and diffuse the situation. I got a to-go order of a rib tip appetizer and a fountain drink. I arrived 10 minutes earlier than the prescribed time and to my surprise the order was ready. That's about the only positive to this experience. I had ordered off the app and prepaid. This seems to have confused the cashier. The cashier had to get a manager to explain to him what prepaid meant. I was handed a bag and thanked for my order. I mentioned I had ordered a fountain drink and the cashier looked at the receipt and said "Oh I missed that". I drove 2 minutes to the local park to eat in the shade. When I opened the container I realized there were no pickles and onions, which they advertise as sides on their menu. I picked up one of the rib tips and it was room temperature( mind you I was 10 minutes early picking up my order so It couldn't have been sitting long). Also, 1/3 of the ribs tips were dry like Jerky. Which I kind of find hard to do since a rib tip is mostly fat. I would have gone back if I was in my car but I was at work driving a school bus and there is really nowhere close to park it.
