Seeing all the 3 star or lower reviews for this place took me by surprise. This location has been a staple of Hanover forever. I guess it's one of those things if you haven't grown up on it, it makes it too different? IDK. Now do they go to the extreme with the onions and chili? Yes they do, but what I do is get one with and one without and just scoop about a third on the other dog and the other third on top of the fries. The fries are fried to perfection. On the weekends you can always find some locals during breakfast drinking some beers. Hey the hunters that get up early and the third shift factory workers got a drink sometime. read more

This was our first time at this restaurant, after driving past it a few times. There was an open parking spot nearby so we gave it a shot. Anything that's been around a hundred years is likely to be good, right? Eh... ironically it was the hot dogs and chili sauce that neither my wife nor I really enjoyed... the thing they're supposed to be famous for. What we did enjoy were the fries and the chocolate shake. If we were in the mood for just those and were passing through again, we'd probably come back for them. The prices were pretty reasonable, and our waitress did keep checking up on us and keeping our drinks filled, so that's a plus in itself when service often seems lacking anymore in this post-Covid world. One other weird thing about this place is the bathroom, for paying customers only, which looks like it probably hasn't changed a whole lot in a century. Tried the chili dogs with everything and fries. Thought the dogs were well prepared and had a nice flavor to them with the onions and chili. The fries were super hot, crispy, and not at all greasy. Pretty much exactly the way that I like them. The staff were all really friendly as well. The decor is that of a an old school corner lunch and everything was very clean. I went in with my daughter, and because I had never been there before, I didn't know if you seat yourself or not. At first, you snicker at the name if you are not from this town as I did, then the townies will stare at you blankly like they just don't get what is purely comical about the name "Famous Hot Wiener". In fact, they might get a little rowdy thinking that you are insulting their long standing hot dog institution, but I giggle with nothing but love for the love on a bun that place pumps out. They have some kind of crack in the food here because hot dogs shouldn't taste this good. They split and grill them, then make them disappear under a 2" slab of chili, cheese and onions (or whatever you ask for really). So great. Just ate here and woah- I was blown away. I had a hot dog w/ everything, ham egg and cheese w/ everything, French fries with everything and washed it all down with a strawberry milkshake. Whatever you order you should get "everything" on it. That means loads of homemade "secret recipe" beef chili (simple but delicious) along with a mountain of sweet onions. It's messy and you will defiantly smell after you're done but it is awesome. I never hear anyone talk about the milkshake but it really hit the spot and is highly recommended. Heard a lot about this place and decided to go. Showed up place was semi busy but some empty booths. Sat down with the family and was asked pretty quickly what we wanted, after browsing the menu choose some hot dogs and burgers. My fault on not knowing the burgers are made like the hot dogs, but I asked for certain things off and still had it come with everything. My kids didn't even eat their meals because the hot dogs were basically like rubber and my bacon was just hard. Not tough or chewy or even crispy just like a cardboard box of hardness. I was excited to try this place as I'd walked by it several times in the past week when visiting Hanover. So my husband and I went in and had the two hamburgers and fries special. Along with a small strawberry milkshake. The shake and fries were really good. The burgers were the worst we've ever had. Dry horrible burgers. A gillian chopped onions on his. Which is ok if you are an onion freak. The place is cute and everyone is really friendly. But the worst thing is the smell of your clothes and hair afterwards. Like foul body odor mixed with onions! You have to go home and get your shirt into the washer asap. You can not put your clothes into your suitcase without wrapping them in a plastic bag if you can't get to a washer!! read more

Each bite consisted of too much bread with bland hot dog. The place is still popular more because of its history in the community, not because it has a good weiner. We went here for lunch and the first thing we noticed was that parking seemed to be limited to metered on-street parking. If there is off-street parking, we didn't see any signs to indicate it. When we got inside and sat down at a table, we found some food bits on it but an employee arrived at our table within moments to wipe it down without any prompting on our part. She was friendly but it seemed like she was stretched a little thin. Despite that, she came several times to see how we were doing. The food was good but some of the prices were a bit high. Hanover Pa has two different hot dog shops, Texas Hot Lunch and Famous Hot Weiner, Famous being the better of the two IMHO. The dog is grilled and therefore is a bit crisp, however not so crisp that your grandma won't be able to bite through it. The chili is out of this world, and you can even buy a pint to take home. You can also get burgers(also great) but don't even ask for a burger bun as everything comes on a hot dog roll. They serve hot dogs and burgers all day long, which I loved when I worked 3rd shift. If you ask for the works bring a bib with you, just saying. BTW go to the one on Dart Drive, its the easiest one to find a parking space. This place is just Awful. The hotdogs are so bland that personally I would rather go to a convenience store and get one. Somehow the chili onions and hotdog (with a gross thick skin) all taste watered down. The "Shake" is just stirred up soft serve that is lacking in flavor as well. Our server was so pregnant she was about to pop, and wanted nothing to do with us. She spoke so softly you couldn't hear her, and never checked on us. Despite 5 employees standing behind the counter I could not get the attention of any of them or our server and had to walk up and ask for a refill. The Famous Hot Weiner has been a long standing tradition in my family. Most of my Aunts had worked there during High School, my Grandfather took me there every Saturday as a kid. I've since moved about an 1 1/2 hrs away, but work lands me in the neighborhood about every 3 months or so and I honestly say they've not changed one bit in the 32 years of my exisitance. . . I still love them and I ALWAYS bring a bag full of them home, even if it means my car will smell like BO for the next week - they are just worth it. The ones I bring home, 2 are reserved for me and the rest I share with those whom have never had the pleasure of tasting THE Famous Hot Weiner. Some have agreed, some not so much. . . to each his own.
