I've been coming to all the Famous locations since I was a little kid. Tons of great memories getting some dogs with my dad. Now I get to enjoy these dogs and make new memories with my daughter. This was the first time I brought her out to this location. She's a plain Jane and just gets a bacon and cheese dog with fries. I normally go with the two dog special, one with chili and onions and one without. The whole onion on each dog is just too much for me. So this way I scrape half off right onto the other dog. It has been several years since we last stopped here to grab a lunch and unfortunately, it was a very bad decision. It took a few minutes for our waitress to come over and took our drink order and our food order and it did not take that long for the food to come out and this is where the two star rating comes into play. The hot dogs seem to be overdone and very chewy and it's just not like a typical hotdog. It had burn marks on a flat surface because they cut them open. The buns were extremely spongy and not impressive and the buns are a lot larger than a hotdog. The chili sauce was good as well as the cheese you really can't mess those two things up and the french fries were good as well but being a hotdog place you would imagine having a good quality hotdog and that really is not the case here. My husband said the hotdogs were "mediocre" at best. The service was pretty good. The restaurant is like a typical diner inside. Not one of my favorite places to go. It was a rainy afternoon, bordering on the evening, and we were returning back to Hanover after a trip halfway across the state. We knew that going home was going to result in TV dinners coming out of the freezer, so we opted to try something new in town (for us). We figured that a hot dog place that has been around for over a hundred years would be a good bet. We were wrong. Pulling up to the place, it met our expectations... building that has been around for a couple of decades, lots of glass windows to see out of, etc. I know we weren't at the original downtown location, but this one had been there for decades and we figured it used the original recipe that made it so famous, so we would be good to go. Walking inside, we were met with... well, low-key chaos is a reasonable word for what we saw. One of the wait staff said we could sit anywhere, but that proved to be a bit of a challenge as most of the tables were filthy, covered in onion debris and other condiments. The floor, of course, was also covered in the same debris. We would soon find out why. After having found (and wiped down to remove some of the filth) a table, our wait staff came up and provided us with menus. The menu isn't all that big, so it didn't take long to figure out what we hoped would be a good meal. My mother went for a simple hot wiener with the onions and chili sauce (no mustard, we knew it was going to be yellow mustard), and I went with the wiener special, one hotdog and one burger. We didn't have to wait that long for the food to come out. It was when the food arrived at our table that we finally understood exactly why the tables and floor were such a disaster. I am quite sure I have never seen that much diced onion placed on a single hotdog. Both of our plates were simply smothered in the onions and chili sauce that comes with these things, to the point where we couldn't really see the bun or hotdog underneath it all. It was definitely a fork and knife kind of meal, because picking something like this up in your hands was an invitation to disaster and the primary motivator for all of the onions on the floor. So I cut a bit out of the mound... found a bit of hotdog and bun, and tasted it. This is where the sadness and despair truly set in. The bun was just a soggy white bread bun that you can get an 8 pack of for 99 cents at Walmart. OK, I can go with that, part of the charm and all, except it was buried underneath all that onion and chili and it really was just a complete soggy mess by the time it got to our table. I could have let that pass... if it weren't for the hotdog itself. I don't know where they get their hotdogs, but they need to change suppliers, and fast. The casing for these hotdogs was hard and rubbery, not from overcooking, just from their production method in the first place. Once I got through the casing, the meat contained within was some of the most flavorless meat I have ever had in any sort of sausage. I would eat a vegetarian hotdog over this any day. The onions were just too much... perhaps if they had been cooked through instead of placed on there raw they would have been nice, but as it was it was just not a good thing. Combine that with a chili sauce that also had next to no flavor, and I was not in happy town at all. So... combine a place that is filthy with food that is flavorless and has the texture of a bouncy rubber ball, and I'm sorry but one star is all you are going to get. I almost never write one-star reviews, and I don't give that rating lightly. This is not to say that the staff were bad, however. They were pleasant, took care of our orders, and handled us just fine. I did wonder how the breakfast at this place would be, but after experiencing the dinner fare, there is little chance of my returning to try the breakfast. read more

Good, solid, Weiner restaurant. The 'uptown' location is preferable to me, as it had a big parking lot. Downtown, though a more colorful spot can be difficult for parking. Good hot dogs, with the classic slashes, and some nice char. Fast friendly service, and very attentive. The hidden gem at this century old spot is the egg sandwich with everything. Most everybody gets the hot dogs. They are not to my taste, but that egg sandwich is WOW! It's like the hot dog, only substitute a fried egg for the hot dog - steamed bun, mustard and mounds of onions. I know it sounds gross, but it's absolutely delicious. This place has slinging hash down to a science. I drove an hour for their famous wieners and they served it up in less than ten minutes after I sat down. These hot dogs are the truth. I don't know if the wieners are made in house but they are full of flavor. The casing gives it a good snap when you bite down. The bun is soft but manages to hold up under the chili and onions. The french fries where hot and crisp. I opted for a side of their homemade gravy to dip my fries and I'm so glad I did. I honestly wanted to order a burger and pour the gravy over it with a pile of onions.....maybe next time. You seat yourself but the wait staff comes to you to order. Service was quick and friendly. This Chicago girl approves of the Famous Hot Weiner -- good hot dogs, good everything dogs, onion and chili dogs are great. We had vanilla and chocolate shakes that were delicious, better than Wendy's! The atmosphere needs help -- the tables and decor are outdated and bland. They could spice things up a bit and it would be super cute as a 50's diner. Almost a rebrand is needed. Our server, Carly, was a firecracker -- I've never seen someone move so fast and do so much in 20-30 minutes of watching her. She's amazing. read more

I have had these famous hotdogs for 60+ years, they certainly aren't what they were by any imagination in the past several years. I tried the Dart Dr location twice this year after giving up on the chili having any taste. First tried again two months ago was terrible, no taste chill, terrible hot dog. Decided to try it today once again, food was terrible, no taste and dogs were tough and had trouble cutting with silverware. Food was hot and server was good, but it ends at that. We found this lil gem by accident. My husband loves Hot Dogs so we called early and asked, "is it too early to get a Hot Weiner?" I don't know where to start I'm so disappointed. I used to take my family here every week. The last several times I can't eat their cheeseburger sandwich with everything. The burger is so well done it like rubber also it keeps getting smaller it use to be the size of the roll now at least two bites is Just the chili and roll. There hot dogs have changed as well. The best I can do is order a quart of there chili sauce and onions and make it at home. This makes me sad since this was one of my favorite places to eat. read more

I love this place. These are fantastic hot dogs and I love their chili sauce. I always ask for light onions and even that is a little bit too much. Still, they have a fairly extensive menu with all sorts of combinations of key items but there's no way I can ever not get the two hot dog special. I believe they are using Kunzler franks, and they're split before they are grilled for a little extra Maillard effect. They are a close second in taste and prep to a NJ -style, deep fried ripper dog. The fries are your standard frozen 3/8" fries but the chili sauce elevates them to something magical. I especially love to add more calories by putting chili and cheese on their fries. Service is fast and brusque but it's always crowded and they have to keep up. I have never had any issues with order mistakes of the numerous times I have been here. If you're a hot dog fan, these are a must try. read more

For years we've passed this when in town but never stopped in. We finally stopped today and it didn't live up to the hype. My husband and I each got the special...he got two hot dogs with chili and fries, and I got one hot dog and one hamburger with chili and onions. I also got gravy for my fries. The food came out super quick, like our server had barely left with our order. The plates were overflowing with fries and the dogs looked great. I thought I'd accidentally gotten 2 hot dogs, not knowing hamburgers are served in hot dog buns. How was I to know under all that chili and onions was a burger and not a hot dog? Anyway, the burger itself had very little flavor. All I could taste was the bun, onions and chili. The hot dog wasn't much better. I'm not sure what brand hot dog they use but it is lacking in the taste department. The fries, however, were a hit, as was the gravy. Service was excellent. We were checked on often. Use Hippy hot dogs or something with flavor. Add some spice or something for flavor to the chili. Add some varieties of mustard or hot/spicy options. Offer better buns than white rolls. For Chile dogs I have not found anything close on being better. Service is always good. I have never had anything sent back for any reason. I enjoy there vegetable soup. This place is a diner style joint with hot dogs as their star. They have some other things on the menu including hamburgers and chili, but that's all secondary to their unique dogs. Different from your typical hot dog, they are thick, cut in half and topped with generous heapings of raw onion and chili. I'm not sure of the quality of the dog, definitely not organic but it's very fatty and pretty tasty in their own right. I always get the special. 2 dogs with the toppings. The special allows you to get a hamburger and hot dog or 2 hamburgers but I can't seem to stray away from the dogs. It's a lot of food! It's worth stopping in a few times. The dogs had been split and grilled which overcooked them and left them chewy and rubbery. The chili -- ground beef in a tomato based sauce -- was badly under seasoned. No spice. No heat. No flavor. Went here while on a weekend trip from Maryland to Hanover. They just weren't very welcoming. I asked about the history of their establishment and the waitress just remained quiet and set down a menu that had some info in it. She didn't seem to want to deal with my husband and I. This restraunt is just very unprofessional and disgusting, they have people vaping inside the store, they have people who take dabs and smoke weed inside the store, they don't use the fork for the onions which is unsanitary. The floors are a mess so disgusting, they don't take care of the bathrooms, and the managers are clearly racist, they always seem to be yelling at the African Americans or at Hispanics. A great local place in to get food after visiting the Utz and Snyder's factories in Hanover. I found this place on Yelp, as well as gotten a recommendation from somebody in the Utz Factory Store. The service was good, as well as the quality of the food. Although the chili hamburgers are not what they are known for, the hot dogs were the thing that you have to get at this place. Contrary to the present day, the hot dogs have natural casing, a rarity in these days. The hot dogs were tasty, but needed more chili and mustard, less raw onions. With the fries in the combo, it was a deal, despite getting the items a la carte would cost about the same. Overall, if going back to Utz and Hanover's, it would be one of my many options. read more

After grabbing lunch from here a few weeks ago we just knew we had to stop back when in the area this past weekend. On our first visit we tried the hot dog special with the fries and also got 2 of the burgers (minus the fries) and ate our lunch at a park nearby. Hubby and I quickly realized that we would have been just fine with the special alone as one of these filled us up. I tried the burger initially while hubby ate his hot dog; the burger is actually served on a hot dog roll and is a burger cut in half and was just okay but the hot dog was absolutely delicious. The hot dog has a nice snap, the chili is the perfect partner and I love that they pile on the onions (I would love to know how many pounds they go through in a week). This past weekend we stopped by a little after 2 so we were able to snag a table inside for lunch and after learning from our past mistake ordered 1 hot dog special to share and I added relish (the best pickle relish I have ever tasted, I actually started to eat some of mine with a fork to savor every bite) to mine. In addition to the 2 hot dogs the plate is served overflowing with fries and as I looked around the dining room I was surprised that hubby and I appeared to be the only diners actually sharing the special - I honestly don't see how anyone could eat more than 1 in a single sitting. The staff here is a well oiled machine and they get you in and out quickly all while practicing healthy social distancing guidelines.
