I was craving Middle Eastern food and my friend suggested Famous Kebab. It is located in an area not too familiar with so it was a journey to get there, but it was worth it. This restaurant is a study in old school dining experience. It reminiscent of family owned restaurants with the older generation creating a homey atmospshere. The furniture is comfy and broken in. When you walk in, you feel immediately welcomed by the staff. There is nothing pretentious about this place at all. For an appetizer, we got the Bademjoon- an eggplant dip served with naan. To make it vegan, asked for the kashk on the side. The dip by itself was good, but with the hashk, it took it the whole new level. They also gave us an oil and mint dressing, which was phenomenal. For my main course I chose to have the beef Koobideh with rice, salad and a roasted tomato. I could eat those roasted tomatoes all day long. My friend shared a secret with me- cut roasted tomato, mix it in with the basmati rice and top with sumac. What an amazing combination? Throughout our meal, staff would pass by and see how we were doing. Not intrusive, it didn't feel like a server asking you if you need anything. All in all my meals here have been great. If it was a little bit closer to home, I would probably go more often. Parking is a little touch and go sometimes there's parking and sometimes there isn't. The lot is very small. read more

Our party of 6 included me, Bridget W., Alex T., Janelle M., Jenny P., and Bettina C. Don't forget to check out their reviews also! We all gave the food two thumbs up! The menu has a large number of selections for the carnivore and vegetarian alike. I wasn't quite sure what to order, but put my faith in Bridget as she recommended the Impossible Koobideh Kabob which included Basmati Rice and a grilled tomato. The flavors were amazing! I really wanted to like this place. The outside looks like an old strip mall. The inside does not match that at all. As soon as you walk in the restaurant, it's like a beautiful expensive 5 star resort. The ceiling is tall with beautiful crown molding and chandeliers. The tables and booths are very pretty with cloth napkins. The food was good not great but it was good. The prices are very expensive and so are the fountain drinks. The only reason why I give it a low rating is the waiters and staff are very rude. The young waiters are on their phones and when you ask for something they get upset . Change your staff and you will get a lot more business. Good food beautiful clean restaurant just very unhappy rude waiters. read more

In my long ago omnivore days I used to be a regular at Famous Kabob, enjoying skewers of kabobs and mounds of rice sprinkled with sumac. Sometimes I would even drive across town during a lunch break just to have their amazing Kashk-e-Bademjoon and grilled naan. When I went vegan I thought I would never get to enjoy Famous Kabob again, but someone somewhere posted that they now had a vegan-friendly section of the menu and I immediately alerted one of my favorite dining companions to join me. It's been many years since I set foot in this Persian gem, I cautioned, but we were both more than willing to give it a shot. Like in a time warp, Famous Kabob has not skipped a beat and I couldn't be happier. The dark wood booths and giant chandelier remain and so do the familiar smells of saffron, cardamom, and mint. I devoured the Impossible Koobideh Kabob and thought to myself wow, if only more places seasoned plant-based beef this way... it was so delicious! We dug in to the eggplant dip (sans the kashke to keep it vegan) and it was just as flavorful as I remembered. I sipped hot tea as I added extra sumac to my Persian rice and marveled at how damn good this place is. If you haven't tried this Sacramento institution yet, you're doing your tastebuds a disservice. Famous Kabob is my go-to for kabobs, especially the tasty koobideh. The chicken and barg are also delicious. I like starting with fresh naan (bread) and cheese with herbs, stuffed grape leaves or shallot yogurt, and ending with Persian ice cream or baklava with tea. The staff are nice and friendly, there's decent seating, and while the parking lot is small (10-12 spaces), you can usually find street parking nearby. We ordered several dishes; Kabab Soltani, Chicken Kabab, Kobeedeh Kabab, zereshkpolo. They did not bring sabzee khordan, as they used to. They said you need to purchase it now. They did not bring onions until we asked for them. There were no somak on the table. The portion of rice small and were like child size portion. Couple of men in our group did not get full. Kabab quality was substandard and the meat was rough (not of the best quality) and kobeedeh kabab had a lot of baking soda in them. I do not recommend this restaurant. This place has gone downhill. Every time I eat here the service gets worse, the food Is inconsistent and it's no longer sanitary. Just ordered to go and the Kebob was burned, the eggplant delight didn't taste the same and the person who handled the bread licked their finger first to take a sheet Of paper to wrap the bread with it. I had my employee pick up the food for me and when I called to inform them it's burned, the woman on the phone put me on hold and ignored me. Someone else picked up minutes later to use the phone not to even address me. I told him my issue and he also seemed annoyed and just said bring it back and hanged up. By far, the older woman that works there And her daughter are some of the worst people I witnessed in customer service. The older woman even demands tips before paying. I truly wanted to enjoy this spot. I was even excited to come out here to explore this place by myself. However, the customer service was awful and I didn't even feel like any of the employees were attentive to my table. I had tried to speak and politely wave to a waiter or waitress over 3 times and was ignored. Trust me, I contemplated walking to the front lobby to let them know I was ready. Finally, after 25 minutes of sitting at the table, I noticed a family who had sat down and were immediately serviced. Waters, naan, given to them within minutes and within 5 minutes of sitting, they had their order taken. At this point I was sincerely debating on leaving. But I had driven over 20 minutes to check this place out since it was recommended to me and I had been excited to try this place. I finally got the attention of 1 waitress and she had barely looked me in the eye and told me she would be right back. It took her another 5 minutes to circle back to me. I'd like give benefit of the doubt and hoped that the employees thought I was still looking at the menu but after 30 minutes I was a bit frustrated. Please keep in mind I had not been checked in on throughout the 30 minutes I sat here, and did not receive any water until 40 minutes into the service. On the other hand, the ambiance of the restaurant is beautiful. It caught my eye when I walked in. It is so unfortunate that this was my experience because I've been wanting to find a good kebab spot. But after the worst service I've ever experienced, I'd rather find a different spot that respects all of their customers equally. read more

The place looks updated since our last visit and the servers were super attentive. My friend took me out to lunch here since she said she's been coming here for years. I really wanted to try some good Persian food. When we first walked in, it seemed like they were busy and no one greeted us. Finally, the server saw us and seating us. Upon, sitting down the an older gentle server asked if we were ready and I said we needed a few minutes. He walked away and didn't come back. Then we tried to flag him down to take our order but he was busy with other tables. Another server came and gave us water and took our order. He also brought back the nice warm naan. We both an a combo plate and order the Must O Musir (Yogurt dip) and Shirazi salad to share. I had a chicken and beef combo plate. It was good flavor and the meat was tender. If you are looking for authentic Persian food, look no further you just found it. It is located in Arden Arcade in Sacramento, nicely tucked in a shopping center. On the back of the menu is the vegan/vegetarian section where you'll find The Impossible Koobideh. You can have rice or salad or half and half and it also comes with a broiled tomato. I haven't had the salad so I'm not sure if it comes dressed or what type of dressing or even if the dressing is vegan. I've only had the rice. Flatbread and pads of butter came after I ordered. These items are not vegan. Impossible Koobideh is solid though.. I recommend adding an extra tomato. That may differentiate if I have a salad instead.. we'll have to re-evaluate with another visit.
