As a result, I've had appointments with many of the women here and they all have done a fantastic job. The usual visit goes: I do a terrible job explaining what I want exactly (usually accompanied by a picture or two), they somehow decipher it and make their own suggestions, and I walk out loving my new color (and cut but I usually just trim a couple inches so nothing special there). Everyone's super nice and they're good at reading whether or not I want to chat or just have an hour or two of relative silence/escape from my hectic life. They also always suggest cheaper ways of doing what I want and I'm grateful for that (and it always looks amazing). They also always take into account my infrequency of visits and suggest things that will take less upkeep which is also appreciated. Picture is just the most recent haircut and color; sorry it's just half my hair but it might give you an idea! The only problem is that parking is a nightmare in the area. There are usually some free meters in the area (try a street down from the salon, next to the UDF) but if you're getting something that might take more than two hours, those two hour meters aren't super helpful.

I was originally scheduled with Kat, but because she was sick she wasn't in on the day I was scheduled, and that's okay I'm usually flexible. So someone called me the day before asking if I wanted to 'reschedule with Kat or if I wanted to still do it today there's another stylist who is very experienced, is on the same level as Kat, and will do a really good job' so I said sure I can switch. I go in to my session yesterday and show her the same pictures I had sent Kat. The girl said in order to get the color i want we would need to lighten my hair and then tone it. So I said okay. About a quarter way through her lightening my hair I asked if it was a dye. She said it was bleach. I didn't know lightening hair was bleaching, but it makes sense and that's my fault for not clarifying. I figured she knew what she was doing so I continued on with it and didn't say anything. After like 4 hours we washed the bleach out and she put a toner in and my hair ended up being an orange/yellow. I was going for the complete opposite of that, like an ash brown kind of color. I couldn't even say anything about how much I didn't like it because I was there all day and just wanted to leave and didn't feel good about my hair. I go home. I look her up on Instagram and I find out she's an apprentice. I understand people need to practice and learn but I really wish whoever scheduled me would've been honest about the level she is on. The next morning I call back because I just can't walk around looking how I looked, especially since I am going to a wedding. I get it retoned by the same girl and yes it's better, but it still is not even close to what I was going for. Instead it's a little bit more closer to my original hair color just slightly darker. I feel like my hair is ruined from the bleach. It's so brittle. And I honestly feel like I could've done the exact same thing with a box dye from Walgreens and spent $15 rather than $245. I wish my hairstylist would have told me it would take multiple sessions to get to my color goal or just say she didn't know how to. Not giving 1 star because she at least was willing to try and fix it. And it's my own fault for not knowing she was going to bleach my hair. She was really sweet and I just feel bad that I didn't like it. I really wanted to.

I just happened to be scrolling through my Yelp app looking for salons nearby and Penzone jumped out at me because this location has been there forever. I've also had my hair cut at one of their other locations forever ago and when I looked at their availability, they had an appointment the very next day at 5pm. I didn't even care who the stylist was, I just needed it done. I arrived right on time, checked in, and grabbed a beverage while I waited. It wasn't long before I was greeted by my stylist, Sage. She was easy to talk to, listened to what I wanted, and gave good advice and direction when I was tempted to do something I wasn't planning on doing. I knew exactly what I wanted, as I was looking to get the same cut I did last summer. Your basic long bob, about collar bone length. We did the washing and cutting and drying and cutting again and I was out of there in about an hour and a half. I'm really pleased with it and enjoyed Sage's approach so I made an appointment to come back in a few months. The price point was cheaper than the place I used to go to and I was way more satisfied.

RUINED the beautiful silver I'd been growing out for a year. This cut though, pure trash - I cried for hours. I look AWFUL!!! He was also extremely rough, pulling my hair, wiping the color aggressively, it felt like he was angry to be there. It was painful, not relaxing. Also the salon is dirty. Not the Penzones experience I remember. Hire a cleaning person for the love. And for this trash I paid $400. I was too upset to say anything. I burst into tears the moment I left.

I'm honestly really disappointed with my experience. I booked an appointment specifically for a…read morebase color AND highlights, and I showed the hairstylist reference pictures of the color and overall look I was wanting. However, my base color was never changed only highlights were added. The highlights also ended up being much more subtle and darker than the reference pictures I showed. I was hoping for noticeable, soft caramel/brown highlights with more dimension throughout my hair, but the finished result looks very close to how my hair looked before. I did tell the stylist that I liked it when I left, but I want to be honest that I only said that because I felt uncomfortable being rude after she had finished my hair. Once I got home and really looked at it, I realized I was genuinely disappointed because it wasn't what I had asked for or expected when I booked the appointment. I understand that hair doesn't always turn out exactly like a reference picture, but I feel like there was a pretty significant difference between what I booked, what I showed, and what I actually received. I was really excited to get my hair done, so it was upsetting to spend the money and leave feeling like my hair barely changed.
