Came here to try the smoked wings and honestly, they were just okay. Not something I would go out of my way to return for. Some reviews mention that the wings are juicy - this is only true for the flats (2 bones) and not the drums (1 bone). The drums were dry af. We didn't find the wings alone to carry that much flavor but they do come with your choice of sauce on the side. We opted for spicy bbq (combination of housemade hot sauce with bbq sauce), which helped with the dry drums for sure. Asked a local if they prefered wings at Fat Dan's or Ale Emporium and she told me Ale Emporium. We got pizza for takeout and it was delicious! The crust was super good and my favorite pizza I tried was the build-your-own one that we created. The women at the counter were nice and there's a free parking out front, as well as a small outdoor patio with picnic tables in the parking lot. Fridays , we tend to try and find a new resturant and try it with the kids . This week we went to fat dans and it was really good . We got there about 545-6 so we beat the busy and we didn't have a wait , we started with the large fries and it was huge literally a pound of fries that were seasoned to perfection. Loved the chill atmosphere and vibe also , our littlest had. A great time , They also offered board games and card games if we wanted which was great as far as the food it was outstanding, a created a calzone with pepperoni onion mushrooms and garlic sauce . The calzone was huge and filled with the toppings I picked . My husband said the wings were good only thing he wanted was ranch which they didn't offer but he stated that they were extremely juice and smoked just right . We ordered a variety of apps for our "meal": corn dogs 10/10, fries, and pepperoni breadsticks (great dough!). The ambiance was very lowkey, dive bar - vibes. The food was brought out on butcher paper for our apps! Makes it super fun and messes are easy to clean up! Our service was good. I've been to the downtown and Broad Ripple locations, but this was my first time at the Carmel location. It's situated in a strip mall near Main St & Guilford Rd. When I walked in, I was a little surprised at the inside and it just seemed a little less "kept up" than the other locations that I had been to and that was further emphasized when I used the bathroom which honestly pretty gross and also had cleaning chemicals just sitting on a changing table. Their saving grace is the food. They have so many options for just good ole comfort food. Their menu was actually super hard to read because there's a lot going on- from the logo in the background to the descriptions of the meals being centered, but names being left-aligned. I would definitely recommend that they redo those if even someone in their mid-20s has an issue with reading them. For my meal I ordered the Fatty Melt, which is topped with American cheese, sautéed onions, relish, mayo, ketchup on rye bread. This was overall really good. I think I would definitely order it without the relish next time though because they use the chicago-style neon relish, which I was not a fan of at all and picked it off. We've always loved other Fat Dan locations but never think of their Carmel location. After all it's located in a strip mall by a gas station. But after this visit let me tell you I could not have been more wrong. Their staff was friendly and attentive. The inside reminds me of a small local sports bar where everyone knows everyone. We ordered two local beers on tap. It appears they usually have ten beers and ciders on draft with a handful of bottles and cans. I also ordered the beer cheese fries and my boyfriend ordered the FD3 Burger flight with an upgrade to fries. The beer cheese on my fries was alright, it did leave a funny aftertaste though. We were also confused by the shredded carrots on the fries. My boyfriend said his sliders were good and he would definitely get the full size next time. However with how big the pizza menu is, we may just need to try out their pizza next! We'll definitely be back to enjoy the overall great atmosphere. read more

Admittedly I'd never have eaten at Fat Dan's before moving out of Indiana. I'd heard good things about it, but being that at the time of my move I didn't venture much to the northside, it wasn't really on my radar. Both of my last trips to Indy have now included lunch at Fat Dan's to my brother's delight. He lives right down the road (not even 5min) from this Carmel and eats here a lot to say the least, and I can see why. The Italian Beef is ooey gooey juicy and delicious, but for me, I won't get peppers in the future (too spicy for my liking). I got a little heat from the family for getting the BLT with egg but no tomato, luckily though the server was on my side - he does the same. The loaded totchos are to die for, even with a little "hot sauce". Hot sauce in quotes because there is a clear difference between "midwestern hot" and "Arizona/Southwestern hot". :) Totchos are definitely a meal of itself for 1-2 people or a nice appetizer/snackable for a group. Although a bit pricey, they load up their sandwiches with meats to probably make up for the saddish chips on the side (definitely worth to plus up for another side). They have a great selection of beers on tap and plenty of tvs to make for a fun afternoon. Great to have seen what the hoopla is all about for this Indy-Chicago deli! read more

I hate to do this since I've only been in Carmel for two years. However, I finally took advice of many people over the last year to have a fabulous Chicago dog from Fat Dan's. Even though I ordered my Chicago dog for takeout I opened it up soon after it was delivered to the counter for pick up. Nothing in the Chicago dog was hot except for the peppers (they were spicy). Even the center of the hot dog wasn't even warm, the added cheese was around the hot dog and was not melted or melting. Also, disappointed to see one member of the staff in the kitchen as he stood at the food delivery window behind the bar. He was scratching his stomach under his shirt & apron, then his underarm and finally wiped his sweaty forehead & went to the back of the kitchen. I got up, to see if he washed his hands which he did not. I'm not sure if he handles food in the kitchen or not, but yuck! In addition, I heard the young female at the front cash register tell people who walked in for seating "go sit wherever". Since their policy or style of seating is seat yourself, a more pleasant way to welcome people into your food establishment would have been, to state something like, " please feel free to sit at any available table or booth". The pizza was probably the best we've ever had in indianapolis (and this is the only location that serves pizza). They also offer salads and other items that aren't at the other locations. The reviews here seem really divided. Some people love it, some hated it. Some reviews mentioned the pizza game has picked up lately, and I did notice the wood burning oven when I walked by a few weeks ago. So I decided to order their margherita pizza for take out. I usually judge the Margherita pizzas on a curve because a lot of places put entirely too much cheese on the Margherita. But...this wasn't even a good cheese pizza. The tomato sauce was just bland. The cheese just seemed cheap. The basil seemed really dry and not particularly tasty. The crust was bland and overcooked. Usually that'd lead to a 3 star review. Maybe my expectations are too high for what is basically a bar, different strokes and all that. But the staff in the kitchen did not have a mask on and I just felt uneasy that if mask compliance isn't great here, what else are they skipping out on? We've got several good pizza places in Carmel, as well as those taking COVID compliance seriously but this isn't one of them. Oh well. read more

Never have I ever been in an indoor restaurant with so many flies buzzing around. We personally killed six flies between the time we sat down in our booth until the time we finished our meal. SIX! FLIES! Just from where we were sitting. And apparently our ameteur pest-removal skills were not sufficient, because there were still more flies flying around, but we gave up on massacring insects and just tried to finish eating as quickly as we could so we could leave. We had lots of time to kill flies, too, because it took a long time for our food to get to our table. My husband ordered a pint of beer, and he was almost done with it by the time our food arrived. And the restaurant was not busy at all. We stepped into Fat Dan's for an early dinner around 4:15, and there were two other parties already sitting down -- two tables of two. Like another reviewer said, there are a lot of people who appear to be working here, but it's hard to get your food and/or the server's attention. Not sure what's going on there. We ordered the BLT, Chicago Combo (which is half Italian beef and half sausage on a dipped roll), and the kids cheeseburger. My kids enjoyed their burger, so that was nice. My BLT was OK but the bacon was super fatty and stringy. I was told that the Chicago Combo was not good at all -- the meat was dry, and the roll was too saturated with liquid to the point of falling apart. Overall, our food was disappointing. I was so looking forward to my meal, for a couple of reasons. One, because I've heard so many great things about the other Fat Dan's locations, so I was excited that there was a new one in Carmel. And two, this was my son's birthday dinner, so it makes me sad that we spent it at a restaurant where we left disappointed. I really hope this location gets it together soon. Fat Dans might have the best wings and fries in Indy. The wings are Smokey, flavorful and meaty, and the fries are so greasy in the best way. They serve everything a la carte and no frills on large paper table coverings. The burgers and smoked meats are the best on the menu. I haven't tried the pizza yet but know it's popular.
