Best BBQ I have ever had. Food was the most tender and flavorful. It's affordable too for its amazing quality. The young man serving us was very honest about his favorite foods and wasn't trying to get us to spend more money then necessary. I really appreciated his honesty. We went on a very busy Saturday night - and the place was packed...and deservedly so! First observation? They're way off the beaten path - you'll have to know where you're headed, you're probably not going to just drive by and notice them accidentally. It's completely worth the time and effort to find them! It's not fancy - in fact, far from it. It's simple, inviting, and maybe a little chaotic in the best way possible! We loved the atmosphere and the decor, and everyone was having fun. Make no mistake - the staff were working their butts off - the dining room was full, and the patio area was crowded too. The brisket was some of the best I've ever had - and the baked beans were fantastic! We had a large group, and everyone was raving about the food...not one of us had any complaint or concern. Get there early - like most great smokehouses, once it's gone for the night, you're out of luck. By the time we arrived they were out of ribs and a couple of the side dishes - but that's the price we pay for amazing, authentic smokehouse fare. I didn't know what to expect when my family member suggested we visit Fat Jimmy's. The tiny town of Montrose didn't look like it had much going on but as we drove out of town and saw all of the cars turning into Fat Jimmy's we were pleasantly surprised. I liked the concept that you ordered the food and got it served right away instead of sit down ordering as we had a bunch of kids with us. I went with the meat trio and it was really good. I picked brisket, sliced turkey and burnt ends. All of them were excellent. I liked the habanero bbq sauce and the blues bbq sauce. The plentiful sides were also unexpected but all of them were very good. Probably our favorite was the broccoli bow tie pasta side. All of the staff were great to interact with and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. I wish I lived closer so I could come more often. Keep up the good work. read more

Yes! Soooo good! We hosted part of our 20th class reunion here and the service was excellent! The food is amazing. Drinks were on par. The decor is simple yet sophisticated. The food is amazing, smoked meats of such an excelling caliber as is rare to find this side of the Rio Grand and so close to the Mississippi! Service and atmosphere makes one feel like you are home among friends. So welcoming. Imagine then, after all these great relaxing, homey amenities and great food, the sharp slap of disappointment upon visiting the restrooms. They are clean enough, as in sanitary - but don't look at the decor! Some would rate the decorations and pictures on the wall as soft porn! We were so embarrassed when we treated many guests from our congregation to a special treat. "Let's go to that new place by the River!" We left feeling slightly nauseous. Our friends asked us to please not invite them there again. I can only imagine the intent of management was to be humorous. I'm not sure how many others have felt as assaulted by the restroom decor - but we have not been back. And more is the pity. There are not that many fine dining places around here - not with food like this! I suggested to some of my friends that perhaps we could wear blinders when we go to the restroom - nobody laughed. If I go again....I'll make sure I don't need to visit the restroom. I write this not to dissuade anyone else from going to Fat Jimmy's - but to let management have the opportunity to hear what may be hindering business growth. Just don't do it! This was the most sub-par BBQ that I have ever eaten. I am not sure what all the great reviews are about. All the meats were super dry and not appetizing at all! The best thing was the mashed potatos. Also, there were flies EVERYWHERE and on the food they were serving to you. When we nicely talked to the manager about the issues he had an attitude. This smokehouse is completely generic. It's one of those "if you been to one smoke then you've been to them all," kind of places. It's also really hard to find. It's tucked behind trees and no signs telling you where to turn. Leaving can be another "adventure" for this place. Depending on your car, the dark drive way can ne hard on your vehicle because the driveway into it has some steep sides. If you do plan on still coming here, make sure you run all your errands before hand and you plan on taking a shower afterwards. Or hope the wind is blowing the smoke away from the building. Otherwise everything with yiu straight up stinks of smoke, clear down to your underwear. It would have only been a 1 star rating, but their meat was for the most part moist. New business, great building, outdoor seating in a shady glen. Food... expensive for the area. I ordered the ribs. It was served from a cafeteria style line wrapped in foil. The meat was not hot, smothered in sauce and had a charcoal lighter after taste. Brought this to attention of server whose comment was...yeah its smoked. Also had "Macaroni and Cheese".... macaroni noodles from a pan on serving line dumped into a paper boat then some sort of a white cheese sauce(from another pan) ladled on with a spoon. read more

Very neat place Out of the way location. Their outdoor seating is unbelievable my problem is when you walk in the front door it's a cluster with everyone trying to look at the menu while standing right at the front door. The food servers were very very unorganized. We ordered brisket as well as ribs. The sides were very good but the meat is over smoked and has a very metallic-like taste to it that you had to put barbecue sauce on to cover up. We did not take left overs and we burped this all afternoon. It cost $34 for two people, no drinks . I felt it was very pricey, which I don't have a problem with if it is excellent food . However this has got to be one of the loudest restaurant I've ever been in my entire life. I'd been waiting to try out Fat Jimmy's Smokehouse & Catering since before it ever opened and finally got the chance this weekend. The drive along the mighty Mississippi was in its self worth the trip, breath taking even in the winter time. The place its self was neat, I can't imagine taking in their impressive outdoor seating on a nice day. Their menu is small basically BBQ only plus some sides and a few desserts. Let's talk about the sides first an impressive selection to begin with, with some unexpected gems not normally found at a BBQ restaurant. My first selection was the broccoli pasta salad which contained purple grapes. This may have been one of the best sides ever at such a place. I don't usually do baked beans out however I felt daring this particular night and I'll have to say they packed a little spice but they were without a doubt the best I've had. I was able to taste the coleslaw it was different with a bite of vinegar and some peppers. I'd try it again. Their sweet potatoes were amazing or at least the generous portions of melted, gooey marshmallows on top. I didn't get to try the other sides but next time the Snicker apple salad will be at the top of my wish list. I will say Fat Jimmy did not skimp on the portions, no small little cups here. On this trip I tried the brisket and the burnt ends, the gold standard for any BBQ restaurant. Now please understand when I talk about BBQ meats I am a Kansas City BBQ society judge so I have tasted the best BBQ in the world and comparing it to restaurant BBQ is tough. To start off with I was a little skeptical when the burnt end dinner was cheaper than the brisket and it didn't take long to understand why they were not true burnt end by the true definition. I've no doubt it was from the point and it was returned to the smoker to finish rendering out the fat, but it was more or less pulled and not cubed it did contain some bark but was also mushy. It did however not taste bad. The brisket was also way over cooked and fell to pieces, not a chance to get a slice. It too tasted good and had a good smoke flavor to it. I have had worse even in competitions. I did see someone eating the ribs and they fell off the bone a mortal sin when it comes to ribs. Fat Jimmy's Smokehouse & Catering's selection of BBQ sauces was interesting all name brand grocery store names list Sweet Baby Ray's but I will have to say I was impressed to see they did have Blues Hog on tap, which is one of the most used commercial BBQ sauces on the KCBS circuit.
