I love places like this. You can feel the heart in it the second you walk in. The food was so delicious. Everything tasted homemade and comforting, like the kind of meal that's been passed down and perfected over time. The plates are generous and full of flavor. We even ended up buying a jar of their salsa and jalapeños to take home because it was that good. What really made this visit special though was the people. The owner's grandson was so sweet and helpful, and getting to meet the owner and his family made it feel more like being welcomed in than just dining out. This is the kind of place you remember, not just for the food but for how it makes you feel. The vibe is everything!

    The Mexican flag plate. Yum!!

The best Mexican food I've had in years! The flavors were perfect. The fresh tortilla chips and guacamole were tasty. The Mexican flag plates was delicious. Service made me feel welcomed and well taken care of. Lou clearly loves to feed you good food. I'll be back soon!

    Chili relleno and chili verde

Incredible meal at Fat Lou's. We were drawn in by the chili verde and ended up getting the half/half plate. Chili verde and chili relleno combo with rice, beans, and home made corn tortillas. I feel like a measure of good Mexican food is the rice and beans, and honestly the rice is the best I've had in a long time. We will return for the bbq as it smelt amazing. Great indoor and outdoor seating options with a view of the river. The staff is so kind. Do yourself a favor and grab a modelo from the fridge, place your order, enjoy the view, and get ready to unbutton your jeans because this meal will have keep you coming back for more!

Ask about the chili oil -- tip appropriately. He puts in the work and you can tell. Whoever this dude is really knows his stuff

Love the owner Lou he welcomed us in with open arms! Food was amazing all made fresh daily. They also offer a nice selection of homemade salsa and honey to take home. Very clean we will be back again for sure next time we pass through!!

New spot with great taste in beer choices

Sort of randomly drove upon this location, as had intended to originally visit another place instead. BUT glad that we did end up here. This is for sure a true family owned vibe location. Very friendly, inviting and comforting in our experience. We were however the only guests of 4 doing this visit on a Saturday mid to late afternoon. Their menus are fun as they are actual photos of their meals as cooked. Very helpful for visual people if not familiar with certain dishes. Even though it was lunch time, I felt special as I was able to order chilaquiles even though past the time. Was a delicious meal with added hot salsa on the side. It was fun to have out meals and watch the Mexico/USA soccer game on the tv as well. This location also has a BBQ spot right next door which is a Saturday n Sunday only run establishment. Another fun part was that it was the owners (wife) birthday this day. Wished her a happy one! After our meal we made sure to inform that we would be returning one day soon. If ever across the bridge on their neck of the woods. Be sure to stop in a pay them a friendly visit as you will get the same friendliness in return.

If you find yourself in Walnut Grove, stop here! Lou was there and served us personally. The green pork tamales are some of the best I've had anywhere. Worth the stop and the money!

I've been intending to write a review for the associated Air BnB (Martha runs it). The Grill/…read morerestaurant portion of the business has closed but Martha saved my caboose in a caffeine emergency! I was staying at an AirBnB in nearby Walnut Grove that was poorly stocked (I didn't book it - was there for a wedding nearby). Turns out - Walnut Grove isn't a grocery haven, meaning - called 6 places looking to purchase coffee to have enough for the duration of the stay (business week). I called 'grocery stores' from google & yelp - there's a 'convenience store' in town and when I called the guy who picked up seemed irritated I'd called asking about what coffee they sold. After being told they sold "coffee in a container that doesn't say how much there is, it's $14 and Folgers but it's in a container too and I don't know how much there is" (Actual quote, laughing out loud remembering), then called cafe's that make/ sold coffee (anywhere I saw latte or cup o joe) & that's how I ended up calling Martha. When she picked up "Hi, I saw that you have a cafe - I'm wondering if you sell coffee beans or grounds" to which she said "well, I have a keurig and you can have those or I can probably make a pot if that's what you prefer". After explaining my dilemma - she offered to sell me loose keurig's to get me through my stay! She seemed ruffled that my AirBnB didn't cover enough for the duration of the stay so looking forward to enjoying her hospitality at the AirBnB in the future! She was heading out to karaoke & I didn't wan to hold her up so I thanked her and relayed I'd suffer non- caffeination while we both laughed. She said I was en route and came by the AirBnB! For $4 (only cash I had on me), she gave me a huge fistful of keurigs (got me through the stay with a couple to spare!) , gave me recommendations for places in town, invited me to karaoke & to swing by the AirBnB (sounds adorable!). Martha was such a wonderful breathe of fresh air! If I'm ever in this part of Sacramento again, I know the AirBnB I'm checking out & have excellent tips on where to eat/ peruse in town! Thank you Martha!!

Walking into the bar and grill, you can see the many dollars tacked onto the ceiling and the nostalgic background behind the bar of days gone by, which usually plays host to local farmers, boaters, and tourists in the area. My sister and I decided to take a scenic drive along the Sacramento River and recalled our dad's stories of hanging out at Al's after a day of fishing the river and how the place really "hit the spot!" We pulled up and parked on the narrow little street and walked into this well-known place with the smell of garlic French bread wafting into the air and locals sitting at the bar. We were taken into a small back dining area and given the menu. I ordered the infamous steak sandwich, while my sister ordered the Al's burger, and my husband ordered the fish tacos. The plates were quickly brought out to us and were very generous portions. The steak sandwich was so tasty and big, I was only able to eat about a fourth of it along with the delicious onion rings that came with it. My husband demolished the 3 fish tacos and french fries, and my sister managed to eat about half of her burger. We will definitely be back.

I hate to say it, but that was a mistake. Not the drive down the Delta, but stopping here.. As other people have mentioned, it's a cool space with lots of character. I Head into the dining room, and they were pretty busy. I was kind of surprised, as it was a Wednesday. If they are this busy at lunchtime on a Wednesday, I can imagine what they are like on the weekend. I waited a few minutes to sit down, and then finally I walked over and asked the server if I could just sit anywhere. She said yes, I could. She came over to my table to give me my menu, asked what I wanted to drink, and brought it right back. She said she would be right back to take my order, it was about 10 minutes. It only goes downhill from here.... So she comes and takes my order. I ordered an appetizer of the grilled bread with marmalade and peanut butter, and for my lunch, I ordered the spaghetti Bolognese. She said, "I will bring you your appetizer first." So I wait, and I wait, and I wait... As I mentioned, there was a good number of people in the dining room, and there were also people ordering food while sitting in the the barroom. . She was the only one serving, and it looked like there was only one, possibly two people cooking. 30 minutes in, I don't even have my appetizer yet. I waved her down and asked her, and she said it will be soon, there's still a few people ahead of me waiting for their food. As I was watching, I noticed that food was coming out of the kitchen pretty slowly. 45 minutes in... Still, not even an appetizer. I was going to wait a few more minutes, but then I noticed something. I was watching the server. She was not only bringing food, she was handling money I watched her scratch her head, wipe her face with her hand, and then she even scratched her behind, although through her shorts that she was wearing. They were jeans, shorts, and to me, they seemed pretty short for working in a restaurant That was enough for me, I left. I decided to go back home via the other side of the river. I crossed over, and almost immediately found a bar and grill, where I decided to stop for lunch. The service was stellar, and the food was amazing. The prices were also very good. Sorry, Al, I'm not going to wait for number three. Two strikes, and you're out.

I ordered mine with eggs and ordered the pancake instead of toast, more on that later. To say this is a hearty meal would be the understatement of the year. Try as I might, I packed over half of this delicious dish for breakfast the following day. Judge me if you must, but I measure all pancakes against the gold standard of pancakes, McDonalds.
