My wife and I tried a place in Walnut Grove yesterday for lunch. A friend of ours highly recommended it. It's Fat Lou's Cafe in W.G. It's a whittle hole in the wall but it's very clean. I had a Chili verde Quesadilla with rice & beans, and my wife had the Carnitas plate. Both of our lunches were super good. Everything was perfect. The added bonus was that the owner (lou)was our waiter and once we scarfed down our lunches, he came and made sure everything was just right. But we sat and chatted with him and what a nice guy he is. I'm sure you all have met someone and after talking for 5-10 minutes it feels like your talking to a old friend ? Hands down the best Chile verde we've ever had. The chilaquiles and carnitas are also outstanding. Not only can you feel the love when you walk through the door, you taste it with every fork full of deliciousness. Best fresh Pork Ribs ever!!! We came to visit from San Francisco after a numerous recommendations from friends. We waited for 20mins for the ribs to be cooked since they just opened and man, the ribs were delicious. The owner and his wife accommodated us with warmth and it felt like home. They're very good people and as we talked to the owner, the ultimate goal to make great food. And when you do that, people will always come back to you, even if they travel an hour drive. What a nice surprise! Sunday Memorial Day journey on the Delta Loop & we happened upon Fat Lou's. I can only say he reminded me of my grandmother, welcoming us in to his beloved domain. What a smile & cheerfulness. His savory ribs, burnt ends, corn on the cob, homemade potato salad & green beans were so tasty & so perfect for the unofficial opening of summer. Fat Lou's is a wonderful spot. Lou greeted us as we walked up. We had our dog and sitting on the patio was encouraged. We came for breakfast and it did not disappoint. The special was a rib with their home made sauce. The flavors were perfect. We also had the pulled chicken carnitas breakfast scramble. Very tasty. We also added the home made salsas Lou recommended. Visited Fat Lou's this Sunday 2/20/22 with the family. The place is perfect right on the river in Walnut grove. The owner works the floor with his family and is very friendly and willing to share his story and explain any menu options they have. Our group was big with 8 people and they were able to handle it well. We got our food without a long wait and it all came out hot and delicious. We had Pazole, chiliquilies, linguica & eggs, pancakes & bacon. Some tried the same stuff like pazole and chiliquiles. It all was very good the service was great and we will be back again. Today there was an easy parking spot right across the street and Lou was outside manning the grill so of course we took full advantage! We were not disappointed! Great service and charming staff. You gotta come eat here if you're ever in Walnut Grove. Lou and his staff makes this place a welcoming diner. We ordered the hamburger and blt sandwich. The hamburger patty is a generous portion, juicy and cooked perfectly. The blt came with thick slices of bacon, fresh sliced tomatoes and crunchy lettuce between nicely toasted sliced bread. Wedge fries came with each order. The fries were hot out of the fryer, crispy on the outside and soft inside. Today Fat Lou's had ribs cooking on their bbq. Lou offered us a sample of the ribs and we'll be back! The ribs we had was moist, tender, smokey and tasty. Yum. read more

Excellent Mexican food. Tamales among the best. Chilaquiles delicious as is the posole. 1/2 n 1/2 red and green pork fabulous. Pork Chicana full of veggies and delicious. They could put half and half on the table for the coffee. And you can take frozen tamales home. Lou is wonderful, does the cooking and appears to know everything about mexican food. I used to like butter but never again after Fat Lou's. We had 2 breakfasts, swimming in butter. Also ordered 2 dinners to go. Even though they had different menu names and descriptions, they were identical mash-up of potatoes, onions etc and little meat. Tasteless. I was enjoying my coffee and watching the cook as he prepared the pancakes. Literally spooned a cup of butter on top! Couldn't eat them. Nope Nope Nope never again. read more

Stumbled into Fat Lou's while driving around on a Sunday. After talking with Lou, I couldn't decide what to get, so got a selection. Chili Verde/Costillas plate and a roja tamale. The costillas was one of the best damn things I've eaten all year! Smoked rib, simmered in red sauce and fall off the bone tender. Rich, flavorful, smokey perfection! The chili verde was also delicious, a little spicier than I make it, but not overly spicy/hot, very thick and rich sauce. The tamale was equally delicious and almost twice as large and the average tamale I've gotten at other places. He tried to convince me to try the Chicharron, but after I finally remembered they were fried pork rinds, I passed. He brought a sample out anyway and it was not what I was expecting, very meaty in a red sauce and almost as good as the costilla. He also insisted I try a verde tamale, which was tasty, but I preferred the roja and got a dozen frozen to go with sauce. Yeah, it was a bit more expensive than your average corner cafe, but the flavor and quality was WAAAAY beyond your average corner cafe and you can tell Lou's a perfectionist. Even the iced tea was fresh and strong brewed. Better than ANY Mexican restaurant I've been to in Sac over the last 20 years. I'll be back whenever I'm in the area and will probably even make a special trip or two down when the cravings hit. read more
