I have wanted to come to this winery for a very long time because I originally had it planned for a team event but we never ended up making it. I was a little confused by the tasting format, since you get 10 wine tastings for $10 and you can pick any of their 20 wines. There are different tables for different parts of the list and frankly some tables are a little more fun than others. I thought most of their wines were reasonably priced and some straight up cheap ... but I am not the biggest fan of most of their flavors because they weren't as complex as I had hoped. They do have a fun atmosphere if you don't get someone who is very stickler to the rules and it's a great place for a group. read more

We love Fenestra's easy laid back vibe and delicious wines. The property is so charming with the big brown barn, no frills tasting room and picnic tables on the grass in front of the old water tower. Staff is friendly and they will pour you a generous 7 tastings for $15 (apparently they used to pour 15 tastings, I'm guessing things got out of hand!) Consistently good wines at reasonable prices, including some delicious Portuguese varietals and their famously easy drinking True Red blend. We're new wine club members so have yet to go to a member party but hope to soon! read more

This was high up on my tasting list after reading the yelp reviews and getting a recommendation from a woman at Garre. What they have going for them: +1 $5 for a very generous tasting list of 20+ wines. (Free with purchase.) +1 Fantastic red table wine for just over $10. (True Red) +1 Beautiful, well kept location including clean bathrooms and picnic tables. Why they only got three stars: -1 Disorganized. -1 Almost no explanations of the wines we were tasting. A few points of interest would have been nice but they seemed much more focused on getting people in and out. Although I was a bit disappointed, I did enjoy their wines and would like to return. How can you not love a billion pours for $5? I ended up buying the True Red and my tasting fee was returned to me. I also enjoyed the White Riesling. The setting is very rustic and there are beautiful trees all around. On a less positive note, I was with a birthday group and the staff seemed a little annoyed that we were so chatty. A and I stopped into Fenestra late on a random Sunday afternoon due to being close to our dinner reservation and having good Yelp reviews. When we showed up, we were surprised to see a Holiday event going on! Apparently all of the wineries in Livermore had events this past weekend called "Holiday in the Vineyard" and we felt lucky to get to experience it. Fenestra's event is that they had tastings all over the winery (one table had white, one light red and one heavier red) where you could taste ~10 wines for $15. There was also live music and holiday vendors in case you wanted to get some shopping out of the way. We paid at the tasting bar for one tasting (A was driving so we split) and were off to the races. We started with the whites as guided and boy, were these good, especially for the price. Our favorite was the Sauvignon Blanc which was very tropical. Then we moved on to the lighter red wines and fell in love with their True Red which, for $16.95, is a great casual wine that we were more than happy to take home. Their Grenache was also delicious. Finally, we moved back to the tasting bar to try their more bold wines. Their Syrah (which our pourer described as 'Sexy') was the favorite. A also liked the Port. Our tasting experience probably took about 45 minutes which included lots of chatting with each other, the staff and shopping. What really stood out about Fenestra, aside from the well-priced wine, was the staff. They all were knowledgable and passionate for the wine and really fun! Most of them seemed to be retirees which honestly, are my favorite type of tasting room staff since they do it for the love of wine and not the money. Everyone we encountered was so pleasant and fun. The tasting experience was MUCH less pretentious than most places we have been in Wine Country which is exactly what we wanted. I would love to stop back into Fenestra to have a more "typical" experience but if you're in Livermore, you should not drive by! read more

We probably should have come here first before trying out Thomas Coyne. This place suffered in comparison. $5 wine tasting is a great price for eleven wines, but it certainly isn't free. Thomas Coyne also has a leg up in terms of rustic scenery and history. The servers here were also not as talkative or friendly. To be fair, it is hard to be as talkative and as friendly as the owner at Thomas Coyne. The biggest downfall was the wine though. We spent the afternoon at Fenestra's Annual Holiday Wine Tasting event...gorgeous weather, friendly pourers and awesome wine. A total of 24, yes, t-w-e-n-t-y-f-o-u-r delightful tastes of Fenestra's finest! Out of the 24 wines I tasted, I enjoyed about 20 of them and took home 6: 1. 2006 Malbec 2. 2005 Zinfandel 3. 2006 Touriga (Fenestra Fanatic offering) 4. 2006 Petite Sirah (Fenestra Fanatic offering) 5. 2007 Sweet Viognier 6. 2003 Port I also bought a box of their own Port-filled chocolate truffles, which I will try later on tonight (why does chocolate always taste better late at night?) This is a Power Tasting! Twenty four wines to taste, whoa. Fenestra produces most of their wines from individual varietals. I happen to enjoy blends so it was nice to switch it up. The line up included the classics like Cab Fanc, Merlot, Grenache, Syrah, Petit Syrah, Malbec ect. as well as wines made from Portuguese varietals. My palate is way too loyal to blends which is why the True Red was my favorite of the day. It was a blend of Rhone, Bordeaux, and Iberian varietals. It was balanced throughout with no surprises and pairs well with pizza and burgers. Yup, I am that kind of gal. You will be here a while because their weekend tastings average around 18 wines. We came on a Special Event day where Blue Sage Catering was offering samples of Pumpkin Tortellini, Candied Yams, Honey Ham, Stuffing, and Turkey. Everything we tried was delicious and it great to pair wines with the foods that will be served this Holiday Season. If you don't happen to come on a special event day (next one being Prelude to Xmas followed by Soups for Superbowl) then bring cheeses or lunch. There is a great place to sit at picnic benches surrounded by vineyards. Because of all the foot traffic and quantity of wines you don't get that 1 on 1 time with the pourers. There is little explanation to what you are tasting but they do give you a handout with the wine notes so that is helpful. They "promptly" stop pouring at 5. Not sure if that is a hard 5 "get out of here" or a soft 5 "you can finish the rest of your tasting" and go. Just something to be aware of. read more

We spent a lovely afternoon doing wine tasting at Fenestra last weekend with a group of friends. Robin set us up on this beautiful shaded lawn and took great care of us with an enjoyable well paced wine tasting. They had prepared a custom tasting menu with a print out with our group's name. The setting was relaxing and perfectly shaded so we were not too much in the sun, but also not too shaded. We could see wildflowers near a little creek nearby and on the other side, vineyards. Gorgeous old oaks surround the shaded lawn. We enjoyed charcuterie plates along with the delicious wines that were offered. Robin gave us history of the winery which is family owned. Fenestra has a beautiful location. Its cellar is located in an ancient barn and the grounds consist of huge oak trees. Unfortunately, the wine isn't that great. Typically, whenever I visit a winery, I find one wine that I can say, "This is decent" but in a rating of Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Malbec and a red blend, I couldn't drink any of them. Perhaps I should psychoanalyze my behavior, but, on our trip to Sonoma/Livermore this last week, I purchased more wines at this winery than any other. They offered like, what, 19 wines for free? More to try, more to buy. They were all fabulous. We ended up drinking most of them before we got back down to SoCal! There is one bottle left, we'll save it. I'm reading the reviews here that say, "go here now before it becomes Napa'ized" etc......I have to say, whenever you discover something great, part of you wants to keep it for yourself, the other half wants to keep it a secret! Trust me, I'm a surfer, I know.....the same goes for great waves..... This place was so cool, the grounds beautiful, the pourers cool.......very fun place. The outside seating was pleasant once we asked to be moved to a table that was not in the sun. (Why were we seated in the sun in the first place? The umbrellas are not the UV protectant type. It got hot.) The first pour was generous and directly into the glass and neither my husband nor I liked the wine. There was nowhere to get rid of it. Pouring it on the ground seemed tacky. All other pours arrived in beakers- same glass -so we ended up with slightly mixed wines. We had to ask for water, and there didn't appear to be any food pairings available, so it got old fast. Two stars for the wine, service SUCKS!!! We were club members a few years ago and service in the tasting room was hit and miss, so, we canceled our membership. Earlier this year we decided to give them a second chance and joined the club again. Wine is still good but, service is still terrible. We went to go pick our club release a couple of weeks ago. While there we decided to do a quick tasting of the wines in our release package. Once done we asked for our wine and this woman hands us the bottles in our hand. No bag, no courtesy nothing! I asked her for a bag and she hands me a brown paper bag the kind you get at a convenient store. Really! You can't treat your club members with respect and have the courtesy to package the wine they paid for. We have several club memberships at other wineries in Livermore and Sonoma and we have never been treated this way! Save your time and money and visit other better managed tasting rooms in the area. read more

We stopped by Fenestra on the weekend before Super Bowl for their Soup and Wine weekend. For $20 we got to taste ten wines paired with six soups from local restaurants. This was a very fun experience, and both the soups and the wine were delicious. Everyone was very friendly and willing to talk about their wine or their soup. There is plenty of parking, and the tasting room is close to the lot. This is definitely something we try to do every year. read more

Unsatisfactory service. Never said, "hello," or "good afternoon." Went straight to asking what we wanted in a rude way, no smiles from either of the two women there. I felt so ashamed with my guests from out of state. I had had a positive experience at Fenestra a few years back and that's why I decided to take my guests there, but there was no curtesy at all. The tables were dirty. Nobody checked in on us. No information on the wines or curtesy to ask what we might like. Yuck on the experience! read more

I'm not sure how to describe our experience here besides feeling like a huge inconvenience to the staff for the duration of our tasting. It didn't seem like they wanted to be there and were hesitant whenever we asked for anything or asked them a question. They skipped part of our tasting and acted like we were trying to double up our tasting when we asked for what we haven't tried yet. We had to endure multiple snarky remarks and were made to feel like we were trying to take advantage when all really wanted was our full tasting and what we already paid for. Last stop on our wine tour. Staff was extremely rude when we arrived. I'm sure our 45 person group was a lot to handle and some of us had a lot to drink by then but still felt we could've been treated with more respect. Plus I'm sure they knew we were coming for a birthday and should've expected our arrival. Besides that, the venue is beautiful and has a great view where you can watch the sunset and hang out on picnic tables. Very Pinterest and country chic. We bought a bottle of red wine. I'm a Fanatic and love it here! I discovered this place last year for their Wine and Soup tastings event. What???!! Soup and wine? Was searching for some sort of wine tasting event in Feb....which is zero to none. Finally saw a Wine and Soup tasting here and thought it was interesting. The event had 6 different types of soups and about 12 wine tasting for $15 per person! I kno...Awesome! And soup in Feb? Genius! Came back this year and became a Fanatic (member) which the event was at no cost to me and $5 for a couple of my friends. The wines are a good daily wines to drink, and bottles averages $25-$30. The setting of the winery is quaint and intimate. Barrels in the tasting room and decorations made out of glass bottles provides a unique romantic feel. The pourers and winery manager Susan are great hosts with welcoming conversations. There are 2 sitting areas and multiple tables to bring your own food and snacks. My wife's sister wanted to go on Wine tasting in Livermore for her birthday and I was to be the designated driver which was all good cause I'm usually the sloppy one in the back so it's my turn to be sober and drive right? WRONG! Her other sister wanted to go and she can't drink = ) Whooo hooo! So our first of 3 stops was here at Fenestra Winery, park - walk a little and enter a medium sized room with 3 tables full of wine. Uh what next? Grab a glass, get a wine list and the drinks start flowing...wait "where do I pay for this tasting?" I ask, the lady replies "It's Free!" I smile at her and ask her "How many times can I ask you to keep pouring the same wine?" She laughs and answers "As long as I don't think you're drunk, as many times as you want." SWEET! Fenestra Winery is a good representation of the wonderful wines you will find in the Livermore Valley. I was very surprised as to how many wines they allow you to sample for $5. If you decide to purchase a bottle, or two or three or more, they will apply the $5 you paid toward your purchase. I found that their wines are reasonably priced as well as delicious. They're very generous with their tasting and during our visit, I counted 15 different wines that they were pouring. If you're a member of their wine club, they offered three wines in addition to the 15 they were already pouring. You could get really snockered if you decided to sample everything - so a designated driver is recommended. Outside the tasting room, there are tables and a well tended shaded grassy area where you can bring a picnic lunch. One of the best reasons to leave the Napa-Sonoma Wine Tourism Zone is to get a little closer to the real process. This is farming, manual labor, and biochemical engineering at work--and I'm pretty sure that most wineries do not have masseuses on staff, that avant garde sculpture is not key to the winemaking process, and that the floor of a working winery has very little granite and stainless. Which is why we were in the Pleasantmore area looking for good wine. Fenestra throws open the doors to their cellar (actually, I'd call it a "basement") sets up some tables, and folks line up to taste a staggering array of wines. The wines ranged from bland to great, but the "move along the row" system keeps things efficient, you get to try everything, and the prices were right. You're sure to find something you like along the way, whether it's a mild white, a gamey red from a grape you've never seen before, or a nice rich Zin. The place was packed on a grey winter Saturday, everyone seemed to be having a great time, and the staff was friendly. read more

Just had one of the worst tasting room experiences in the area and had to share it. My wife and I are local and love a number of wineries in the Livermore area. Fenestra has never made that list; however, we have appreciated their diversity and ability to make a number of different varietals reasonably well. When we have visitors that aren't sure what types of wines they like, we always recommend checking out Fenestra as after tasting at Fenestra, we can typically know where else to take our visitors. However, my wife and I just took two visitors and had a terrible experience. We arrived just before 4:30, and they were more than happy to accept our $10 per person tasting fee. From that point on, we were reminded not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times that I heard (and perhaps more that were out of my earshot) that we stop pouring at 5 PM. The service we received consisted of "This is True Red. This is Merlot. This is Malbec. We stop pouring at 5." Terrible! The place was full of other "guests", we were there to learn their wines, and our trip was concluded by being told "it is 5 PM. We are a tasting room, not a bar. If you want to try more of our wines, you can go to a bar." No thanks! We're done sending business their way. If we'd wanted to do wine shots, WE'D GO TO A BAR, NOT A TASTING ROOM. There are enough other wineries in the area with much more personable staffs, better wine and a better overall experience. read more

For wine tasting, you absolutely, positively cannot beat the value - Fenestra lays out more than 20 bottles and charges NO tasting fee! The layout works well, with you working your way down the length of 3 tables, moving from wine to wine until you reach the cash register at the end. Maybe this method is intended to help you monitor how tipsy you've gotten? It didn't help us, as we wound up buying nearly a case. The tasting room looks and feels like a cross between an unfinished basement and a large garage, and you have to walk to the back of the building and through a production room to reach it. While I was impressed to notice not only a small bin of children's books, but a few toys and toddler-sized chairs tucked away in a corner, there wasn't really anyplace for said toddlers to sit and read or play. Perhaps out in the production area? Other than those small oddities, Fenestra was a fun experience with friendly staff and several good wines. read more

You can get buzzed already if this is the only place you go to in Livermore... Quite a long list of wines for 5$. They do get a lot of visitors however everyone becomes friendly due to a lot of wines that are open for tasting. Perfect place if you're single and ready to mingle ! Its all about the True Red! I came here recently for a tasting and really enjoyed myself. I love the cave like, brick haven they use for there tasting area, it reminds me of a winery I once visited in Napa. They probably have the largest selection of wines to choose from that I have encountered at a winery. Most of the wines were just sub par with nothing really calling my name, however, there true red blend was really nice! It has a blend of around 12 different wine varietals bringing out the best of each, which lead me to purchase a bottle :) I also found the Owners/staff to be incredibly friendly and knowledgeable on my visit. Although, the wines were not of the best I have tried, I was impressed with everything else and my overall experience there. read more
