She really takes care of your hair. She is not in just for the money. If you try to get the treatment too soon after she would tell you that is not a good idea (very unheard of). She has a very nice easy going personality and pay great attention to details (which is great when you are getting your hair done). The price range is very reasonable, in the ship end of the spectra. I dropped by Fenny's after reading the reviews on Yelp and I'm glad I did! As everybody else has noted, she cuts very quickly and effectively - I didn't really have an idea of what I wanted my hair to look like, so I gave her free rein with my hair, and the resulting haircut is not only the perfect length but is the "look" that I couldn't really articulate! (It was $15 for my haircut.) I also had Fenny dye my hair... Again, I asked her to choose the color that she thought would be the best for my complexion (I gave her a general idea of the range of colors I was interested in) and the resulting color looks great. I also appreciated that *before* she started the dye job, she told me how much it would cost (it was $60 for my medium-length, thick hair). ALSO, she stayed open an extra hour while my color set and last but not least, gave me great tips about places to eat and shop in Chinatown while we waited! Don't have Fenny the owner cut your hair. Fenny is probably OK for men who want something cheap and quick but that's it. Seems to me that Fenny only knows basics and doesn't understand how to listen to the customer. Bad combination. I'm trying to grow my hair out and it had finally just gotten to shoulder length. I went in there with a really simple request: I want it thinned out. DO NOT SHORTEN. So of course she cut off an inch and a half in length and I don't even know what else she did. A lot has changed in the South End. Fortunately, Fenny's Hair Salon hasn't. I have been getting my hair done at Fenny's for over 12 years and wouldn't even consider going anywhere else. There's a reason Fenny's has survived the real estate explosion and the introduction of hyper stylized and inflated hair salons. The salon isn't flashy but Fenny knows her craft and she does it for an incredibly reasonable price. And if you're looking decompress from a hectic day, be sure to have your hair washed. When I arrived at the salon, they immediately put me in a chair and gave me a 15 minute head wash and massage! For some reason, my review back in October 2016 didn't get posted (maybe because my first time using Yelp). Although I contacted Yelp support to get my review up, they said it takes time. But today, I decided to re-post as an attempt to make sure this great feedback appears: Anyone looking for excellent Japanese Straightening for their hair, this is absolutely the place to go get it done. It is not too far from Boston Chinatown on Washington Street (just a short walk from the Whole Foods Market). Fenny is fantastic. And you must book your appointment in advance. Only because her Japanese Straightening service is only done on Wednesdays, where she actually closes the entire salon for the day, to make sure all the attention is focused on the customer. She really cares about getting this done right for you. And will listen carefully to how you want it. Fenny enjoys working with details and is very experienced with all types of hair. When she was applying the neutralizer to my hair (during the second phase of sitting in the chair for about 30 minutes or so) I actually witnessed a very happy customer who came in. Although Fenny usually closes the shop for other customers, she did his hair for that walk-in as an exception only because it was at the right moment of the Japanese Straightening process, where we had to sit and wait. Plus it was a very warm day that happens rarely in October that I scheduled the day to do it on, where she left the door open to the salon, for the entire session. The customer who was a gentlemen appeared to have visited Fenny for the first time as well, and said a friend recommended him to go see her, because of all the great things mentioned about Fenny. Going to Fenny for myself the first time also, certainly gave more proof and confidence that she is really great at what she does. Also she is very friendly and honest. Fenny is great- granted, I have a super-simple buzz cut, but she's fast, friendly, and (gasp!) open on Sundays! 15 bucks for my buzz, fun conversation with the spirited and friendly Fenny herself, and a clean, bright environment. Just got my hair done by Fenny today, and I walked out giving a big tip and knowing I will be back soon. I did not get my hair cut, so I cannot give a testimonial on that (although she did cut my husband's hair last week; it looks great and he enjoyed the 3x shampooing and massage). What I did do was coloring ($50) and protein treatment ($80). I think the prices are totally fair, compared to other salons. My hair is dry and frizzy, so I am always careful to avoid inattentive hair dressers. Fenny took the time to explain what kind of coloring was in the range of my hair's tolerence, and then made sure my hair wasn't cooking in the chemicals for too long during the process. During the protein treatment, she showed me alternative treatment kits that I could use at home for much cheaper, which I was thankful for. Most importantly, my hair ended up soft, silky, undamaged and the way I had wanted it. There were several walk-ins while I was there, and Fenny handled everyone curteously and in a timely fashion. I like how she was energetic and personable, but didn't talk my ear off. By the way, Fenny's English is not perfect, but enough for me to understand and receive a consultation. For me it's a 45 minute subway trip to Fenny's, but overall I think was definitely worth the trek. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because that means 'perfection' to me, and who knows if that even exists. read more

I've been going to Fenny's for as long as I can remember. She gives great suggestions but cuts exactly how I like it. I don't know much about hair but she's very considerate about other factors when cutting my hair. Fenny suggested I cut my sides as thin as possible since I was going into surgery and wouldn't be able to go see her as often. The prices are pretty cheap compared to high end South End places and even compared to salons in Chinatown. I usually just get a dry cut but getting that wash/head massage is definitely worth it. read more

This is a worse hair salon i have ever been to. I came there to dye my hair to light brown color. Before i came in, i have some color already on my hair and i show her pictures of color i want to have. I original wanted light brown. After two hours, my hair color came out dark black. I asked her why there is no color and only black, she said go home wash three times and the color will come out. After i wash 3 times and it is still black. Fenny is fun and professional. Her prices are very reasonable and the cut is good too. I style differently than any barber or salon tries to style my hair in the shop. Im not picky and dont say anything when I am there because I tend to go directly home afterwards. When I go home I always restyle it the way i like it and most of the time I find that the cut has some flaws that were not noticed because it was styled it in a way that hides the flaws. However, after a cut with Fenny, I was happy to find the cut she gave me worked with my styling without the need to trim a few things here and there myself at home. As icing on the cake, I got the absolute very best shampoo and wash I ever had at a salon. It was basically a head massage more so than a wash. It was wonderful! I will almost feel like I would return just for another head massage. :) read more

Fenny did my straight Perm last Friday and I can say that it has been wonderful. The process is very tedious and long, but Fenny makes you very comfortable and she is very meticulous, so the results are amazing. I have cut about 45 min of my morning routine for doing this and I can't be happier. The humidity does not scare me anymore and I can enjoy the nice weather outside. It is worth a try!!! read more

FUCK THIS SALON. When I got to the salon, I wanted to dye my hair brown, but I had no idea what color makes black hair turn brown because why would I have to know I don't have a cosmetology degree from beauty school. I would expect the barber to know such, but she just recommended that I dyed my hair with medium brown and then collected my money. I thought that would work so I said yes. For the end results, my hair did not change color. She then tell me that in order to achieve brown hair, I would need a red color. It wouldn't have killed her to tell me that in the beginning. And again, I would actually expect the barber to know these basic fundamentals. I then came home and did deep research on the internet and it turns out that brown hair dye DOES NOT make black hair turn brown. Only blonde dye does. And also she dyed my hair without bleaching it first, and I just learned from the internet that it is not possible dye black hair without bleaching it.And while she was blowdrying my hair she was like oh it's turning brown you see? Like bitch where? My doctors said I have perfect vision so I can that my hair is fucking 100% black still. And plus she does not have a receipt machine meaning that she does not have to pay taxes. That is illegal, somebody take this lady to court. Despite the fact that my hair didn't change color at all, she didn't fucking care. All she cares about is making money. Typical Chinese woman. Maybe one day she will learn that her customers comes FIRST and her money comes SECOND. If I come in asking for brown hair, then I should leave with brown hair. And no refund? That's fucking insane. What a bitch.!! She also told me to go wash it a few times and the color will fucking show and I did that and it didn't fucking change color. Now I waste 100 dollars that could've gone towards my tuition at the University of Vermont. I can't trust anybody nowadays. read more
