This place is very fun and unique. Our waitress was not attentive and asked us repeatedly if she could help us. Every time we requested a menu and after 24 minutes we called another waitress over. Nothing is more welcoming for a restaurant than the smell of cigarettes coming from the kitchen as they cook your food. Then came the stench of old cigarettes. The place is rundown and not very clean. This place is such a dive! It's hard to tell how many people are working in this place. For people kept walking through the back area and in and out of the place. With so many people "working here" you would expect top notch service, right? No, they just kinda ignore their costumers. It was hard to get any service. I ordered a cheeseburger and it was gross! It was nothing but a grease burger. The fries were all limp and drowned in grease too. This place is very much a dive place. We waited to be seated (or even acknowledged) and finally found a table on our own. Took 10 minutes for the waitress to acknowledge us so we could order coffee. Had to ask for water and waited 30 minutes for a refill of coffee. Food was delivered at 35 minutes (omelet and hash browns). Hash browns were a notch below lukewarm. My husband had to wipe the table off with his coat sleeve. Definitely a "local" place as people were acknowledged quicker (than us) and by name. That's where the attention went. The front door was propped open but it was an unusually cool day. But if that wasn't bad enough, someone nearby was smoking so the smell came right in the front door ‍. We won't go back. read more

Kind of a no frills old school diner type of place. There's also a bar here as well but I didn't go in there to look around. Fergie's menu also covers your typical diner fare type of dishes as well. It isn't by any means artesian or gourmet but the cheeseburger here that I ordered along with my fries was good and solid quality food from what I concluded upon. I've been to more than a few diners where the food is just so terrible you can't finish it or don't want to. For me that wasn't an issue with Fergies as I joyously inhaled my burger and french fries! I got excited when I saw it's an old tavern/diner type of place because usually when these places are still open it means it's kind of like a hole in the wall gem.. so, tired and hungry after work I make a "to go order" for the basic breakfast. The hash browns smelled like sulfur and were burnt. You'd think they would know how to cook the basics like hash browns but I guess if your griddle and/or cook sucks, you wouldn't get decent ones. Surprisingly good! My party of 9 stopped here for lunch because Top of Tacoma was 21+ only and we had a few kids in tow. At first glance you'll think it's a dive. And it is. But man, they actually delivered. Despite the run down appearance, the loud bar attached with at least one patron liberally blowing an air horn, and the slightly haphazard delivery of waters and silverware, the waitress was great and the food good. Our waitress was polite and took all 8 of our orders without a notepad, yet got the entire order right. We joke about what we might be served, what with the ghetto-rigged air conditioner behind us, but we all enjoyed our meals. Total for all of us? About $80. A bargain. We all left slightly humbled. This place is a pit. The food is incredibly awful. The waitress was nice and filled up my coffee mug frequently, which I appreciated. I only ate here because my blood sugar level was very low. I wish I had gone to Alfred's Cafe or...or Burger King! The bacon wasn't bad, but it was overpriced. The eggs were eggs. Nothing bad about them, either. However, the pancakes tasted weird and the syrup was really nasty. It didn't taste like any syrup I've ever had. It was like glue and it was just weird. How in the world does a restaurant eff up something as simple as pancakes and syrup?! I'm basing my review on two visits. The previous visit I ordered pork chops that weren't terrible but the sides were. Crappy old lettuce that was more brown than green, stale croutons that ripped the skin off the roof of my mouth, limp cucumbers, sad tomatoes, an old, stale roll... Lots of drunks hanging around. It's frightening to read so many glowing reviews about this rat hole. I guess if you're really drunk, even a dusty old rat hole seems like a palace. read more

Went just now at 5pm on a Saturday to get something to eat and the restaurant portion is closed - found a side door to the bar and went in. Very small, very plain - asked the bartender about breakfast and he said kitchen is closed. This place, I drive by all the time and i've wondered how they stay in business due to how dead it always looks Now that I went in, I'm even more baffled. This place was a joke. I stopped in for lunch on Friday. I ordered a chicken sandwich and I swear it was one of those pre cooked breaded pattys thrown on a cheap bun with some mystery sauce. The fries were very greasy and undercooked. It took 25 minutes to get my food when there was only one other person in the place. My salad was all iceberg lettuce and was turning pink on the edges and wilting. It was topped with stale croutons. I didn't touch it but was still charged. The small portion of soup was ok. I also ordered a coffee it was ok. That was it. Charged me $22. An Asian woman came stomping out of the back yelling at a homeless woman, not sure what that was about. The TV was blaring Steve Wilkos and the all I could hear was a black lady screaming at a supposed child molester. Not to mention the place is very run down inside. Never will return. read more

We are long time Tacoma residents who love to frequent our great eateries and bars. We are okay with dives as well as high end, in fact some of our favorite hang outs are the little hole in the wall joints. However, Fergies is an exception. I would never recommend anyone to this bar, unless you're one of the click! The only people who were nice to us, or even took the time to greet us were so drunk they probably wouldn't remember doing it Once inside the bartender didn't even look at us or acknowledge us. As we walked around the bar looking for a seat, there were people who actually moved empty chairs so that we could not sit on them Another guy appeared to purposely step in my boyfriends way as if to pick a fight. After realizing that we were not part of the Fergies click, we tried to find our way out if their maze like set up, only to be confronted by one of the employees asking why we were leaving. Its funny how smoking in restaurants was banned years ago but when you walk in, you can still sense a stagnant cigarette smoke smell in the back room. The main room is small with about 6 booths and stools to sit at a bar. The back room is way out of sight, kinda feel forgotten back there. We sat at a table for 5 minutes without anyone coming with water or a menu before we decided to leave. Upon leaving this nice Asian waitress apologized and said they were really busy because there is bingo going on in some other room further back. Since the service at this point was horrible we decided to just get Club Sandwiches To Go thinking it would be faster. Boy were we wrong. After like 15 minutes of waiting a white waitress came back to ask if we had been helped and we said we ordered To Go and she said they hadn't started on it. The Asian lady comes in and tells her it's almost finished... and they argue about how the Bingo players orders are first and then ours. WOW, really! I am just so annoyed. So very very annoyed. We were waiting around for 30 minutes before our food was ready for $11 sandwiches and on top of that they charged us $1 for a to go order. Checked it out on a whim. Not a good choice. Smaller portions, above average prices combined with older, musty taped up decor and furnishings makes for an unpleasant experience. Having just moved to the McKinley Neighborhood in Tacoma, I was anxious to try out some of the local restaurants. So, we stop by Fergies On the Avenue. I really wanted to like it, but my wife and I were disappointed. I don't expect a lot from a little hole in the wall restaurant, in fact I seek them out. I would rather have good homemade food, than go to a national chain to eat processed food. It was dirty. Windows were dirty, the floor was dirty. Come on, Fegies, a little soap and water goes a long way! The food, nothing special. Just the same processed food you get at the big restaurant chains.
