Killed some time wandering the shops and getting snacks, then met at the Old Town Gazebo to meet, Eric, the tour guide. There was no one else signed up for the tour that day, but he only charged us the regular tour price ($20 each) instead of the private tour price. I'm not that into ghost stuff, but my road trip companion totally is, and I just like learning about the history of a place with a fun twist. It was the first day of summer and the longest day of the year, so the ghost tour was basically entirely during daylight hours, but that was OK with me. Keep in mind this is not specifically a ghost hunt, but rather a historical tour of Old Town sharing stories of local business owners who have reported sightings or strange happenings in their old buildings. You also learn very quickly that Old Eureka used to be a lot more happenin' than nowadays -- nearly any upstairs housed a brothel, and there was likely a saloon downstairs. Now you're lucky to find anything open past 10 p.m. 'round these parts. The tour was mostly outside (and even on the first day of summer, Eureka was still rather chilly!), but we went into a couple businesses, namely the Eagle House Victorian Inn. Just touring that place alone was impressive. Eric tells some good stories and ties it all together. We even had a restaurant manager see us outside, and he popped out to share a recent sighting reported by a customer. Be sure to reserve in advance by phone (and I would recommend calling to confirm on the day of your tour). The tour was a solid 90 minutes, and we never felt like it was rush through even though it was just the two of us.

The fresh cups are super spreadable varieties that can transform even the most casual cheese courses into something special. I love when I stumble on one I've never tried - it lands in my grocery basket without as much as a second guess. Can't wait for the Chipotle Cacao remix! He was beyond informative and knew so much history and just about the trees, plants and flowers in general. After a great (pre-ordered) lunch back at camp, we went to Fern Creek Canyon for a walk. The whole day was absolutely spectacular. Grant taught us so much, with a perfect flow. We were safe, but enough ruggedness and adventure to satisfy the boys and a great sense of humor kept things light. He also shared so many great tips for the rest of our journey. Honestly, it felt like we were visiting an old friend after the first 20 minutes. He even joined us for a few minutes to show us the very best spot for wild blackberry picking at the end of the day. Definitely a highlight of our trip. We did many hikes on our own on other days, but having Grant to guide and teach us was no comparison to what we left with on this special day. Thank you Grant and Redwood Adventures for helping to create the magic on this bucket list trip I've waited 50 years to do.

I'm a nature nerd so having someone experienced like her to teach us about the ferns and the biodiversity of Fern Canyon was such a neat experience. The roads are narrow and curvy to the canyon so it was a nice treat to just sit back and have someone else do the driving on our long road trip. She also educated us about the unique partnership between Rising Redwoods and the National Park System. An added bonus was seeing three banana slugs on our tour! Fern Canyon is a must see if you're in the area!

My instructor was very well versed and accredited to teach the course. He was also extremely patient with us newbies and took into account that we each had different body types and physical abilities. I especially appreciated the philosophy of the importance of safety at every moment. There were certainly little nuances I would not have thought of on my own. Best of all, it was REALLY FUN! I got to shoot 21 different firearms and it facilitated my understanding of what works for me and what I'd like to explore more. I recommend this course for anyone who is new to the sport or even the old dogs with rusty skills. I'm now an old dog with new skills and appreciation.

My destination was the Tall Tree, and I passed miles of banana slugs, moss, lichen, spring wildflowers, and the refreshing surge of Bull Creek with its turquoise hues. The park was far from crowded, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Park Staff tending the maintenance needs (weed abatement). I felt safe & incredibly relaxed on the trail. There are over 100 miles of trail in this park and plenty of river access, providing something for everyone. If you only drive through the Avenue of the Giants, it will be time well spent in this gorgeous paradise.

Surprising lack of random trash so volunteers and visitors do a great job. We have learned over the past few years to avoid the crowds and cost of visiting National Parks in California when we are truly blessed with such exceptional California park options. This park is amazing and fascinating with manageable visitor sizes. Take the time to experience the area small towns too!
