Went to Fernando's to smog my car, everything was absolutely wonderful. No line or waiting at 10 AM on a Wednesday, only difficulty was finding the place (All the way down Olney street, on the left at the end) and everything after that was a breeze. In and out in 10 minutes, and got to watch the Discovery channel while waiting. Fernando was incredibly helpful, very friendly the entire time, and up front about everything. My daughter needed her car smogged. I called around the Goleta area this morning looking for a reputable smog shop that seemed honest and wouldn't take advantage of someone. Since I'm from out of town and don't know the businesses in the area I relied on the yelp reviews for Fernando's Smog check. I'm happy to report that we too had a great experience. My daughter took her car in and was helped quickly (15 min.) and honestly. Definitely worth the $60. I called Fernando back to thank him for smogging my daughter's car so quickly even though she didn't have the DMV registration paperwork with her. He was so courteous on the phone and let me know if she needed an oil change,tires inspected, etc. to have her bring the car back and he would be glad to help. Not happy about needing a smog check on my car. The place I have been going to for years was now a 7/11 store so I needed to find another smog shop. I am a real person, I have absolutely no connection to this business in anyway or form, no one paid me to do this. Fernando is literally the most honest mechanic smog technician I have encountered. First off the smog here is only $51+tax! Normally it's $75 there are a few downtown shops that only charge $32 but I went on my lunch break and it's not worth it for me to go there. He was extremely fast like literally 15-20. The best part my idiot friend who worked on my car left a rag inside my engine!! It was on the header that connects to the cat. Fernando saw it when he was inspecting my car. He honestly did not have to do any of that he could've just plugged in the machine and tubes and be done. My car could've caught on fire and I could be dead right now. Seriously please give this place a chance he will not try to rip you off or destroy your car. If this place gets a 1 star bad review I would be very skeptical of the person who wrote it. read more

This is really amazing. I just read through the reviews - 37 of 37 five star reviews - and today I experienced for myself why. Actually I had gone to Fernando about 3 weeks ago with my 2007 Prius to have it smoged for the first time. Fernando looked at the Dashboard and the engine light came on - and he told me that my car would not pass smog and suggested that I solve that problem rather than running up a bill having it tested and fail. That seemed kind enough - but then he went on to offer to put his device onto my computer and find out what code it was saying and what needed to be fixed. He did this for free and told me the problem was the Catalytic Converter. I told him the light had been going on and off and he suggested that it would pass if the light went out - and for me to bring it back when it was off. For the next three weeks the light stayed off and was getting close to my deadline to have it fixed so that I could renew my vehicle registration. I was in route to the Toyota dealers when I noticed the light had gone out. I took it in to Fernando and ten minutes later I left having passed testing. Beyond that, Fernando is just a very pleasant and helpful guy to be with. The fact that I had learned it would probably cost me nearly $2,000 to get a new Catalytic Converter installed and I was about to start having to pay penalties for my procrastination is a major relieve and why I am sharing this with you now. read more

I just moved here from out of state and the dmv said I didn't need a smog check since my car is new. When I went to apply for my registration, they said I did in fact need a smog check. Feeling frustrated I Googled the closest smog check and Fernando's came up. The building is in a very industrial part of the city so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was greeted by Fernando with handshake and a nice smile and he immediately began the smog check. The waiting room was clean and had new magazines, drinks and comfortable chairs. I didn't set up an appointment but will out of courtesy in the future. The whole process took less than ten minutes and it was $60 which is what I'm used to paying for the emissions test back east. Fernando answered and offered me an appointment for the same day! The location was close to my address (my previous smog checks were done way across town and cost much more). Wow! I walked in without an appointment on a Friday morning about 8:30am. There were two people ahead of me, but Fernando cheerfully said he would fit me in if I could wait a bit. I was totally done and driving away by 9:01! In the waiting area I was talking to someone else who had been there before and said Fernando had helped him get his older car to pass once before and had nothing but great things to say about his honesty and helpful attitude. There was also a man clearly from a funeral home with a hearse and the conversation indicated that Fernando had found a way to solve a problem that saved him a lot of money. This same man mentioned he would be bringing about six additional vehicles by for Smog testing this year. My own experience was this is a super friendly, hard working person who is genuinely dedicated to high customer satisfaction. He also does oil changes where he tops of the fluids and checks the tire pressure. I have a minivan and the price was certainly reasonable and far better than the dealership. It is not easy to write a standout review for someone with over a hundred which areoverwhelmingly positive but Fernando deserves high praise. His shop is strategically located on industrial zoned property which keeps his overhead low. This translates into more service and consideration for your dollar. (He does brake work and other repairs in addition to smog.) I had the experience of a vehicle which has a reputation of electrical problems and throwing all manner of fault codes which make it notoriously difficult to pass smog. Fernando has been very helpful and solicitious regarding this problem which is really the fault of the engineers who designed my car and the bureacracy which wrote the smog laws. But with his array of different electronic equipment, Fernando was able to diagnose the status of my ECU monitors and advise me on how to get them to set into the readiness mode required to pass smog. He developed alternative possibilities for the origin of an electric "gremlin" which kept throwing the dreaded Check Engine Light (CEL), which makes it impossible to pass smog in the State of California. He also provided me with information for worst-case-scenario in which I might qualify for a $500 subsidy from the Bureau of Automotive Repair and also the cap-on-expenditures which limit my total repairs to $650 in the event I cannot eventually pass. Nevertheless, my car is now free of any warning lights for the first time since I owned it and after the requisite 2-1/2 minute warmup I will quickly run through the driving modes (accelerate at 1/2 throttle, decelerate to 20 mph , re-accelerate at 3/4 throttle). Each car has a different sequence that you can find from google and this will reset the monitors to the readiness mode. My particular problem is that on my car, due to legendary engineering problems, the CEL comes on due to an ABS module. Although imho that is not emissions-related, the expert at the BAR told me it was considered as such since the computer uses it to relate to vehicle speed and calculate variables such as timing. Such nonsense! Anyone who needs ABS should not be on the road, it is really only pertinent driving on gravel, snow or ice. Although the computer may use ABS wheel speed data. it is, as the BAR guy admitted, "non-critical" which is why it only triggers the CEL sporatdically. So my issue is to find the sweet spot in which I have activated my monitors into readiness mode by running through the procedures from a cold start, but BEFORE the dog gone CEL gets set. I am grateful that in this situation Fernando was very considerate of my problem and helped me get on the path to a successful test session which I have schedule for today. I am not that good with computers so may not update this review but I am confident that with Fernando's assistance I will be able to hit the target and incidentally avoid having to pay for the temporary operating permit which generally is required at this point. A lot of shops would have piled on a lot of additional charges and it would have cost me much more than my total billing at Fernando's and I would not be able to complain because the problems are strictly my problem due to my choice of car and any beef must be with the engineers. I could not ask for a more decent process from any auto repair shop and my only regret is that Fernando does not as far as I know plan to expand to a full service automotive repair business because if he did so he would probably be one of the most successful shops on the West Coast. read more
