I went in the other day to ask to use the air compressor to seat my tubeless tire. The mechanic who filled up my tire noticed there was a leaking sound coming from the valve and said "it's leaking but I don't know why," and then charged me a $10 diagnostics fee. He also kept insisting that I let him pour in sealant when I was like, "no, I have my own, I don't want to pay for you to add it." And then kept telling me that I must add sealant as though I had no idea how tubeless worked. What an a**hole. Don't go here. read more

Hello Ferris Wheels, I'll start by saying that I know it's hard to keep any business open in these parts, these days. I have a lot of empathy for people trying to provide services like yours. This is basically an apology for and an explanation of my not-so-great reaction in the store earlier today. I'll keep it short. I came in to use a pump, ended up having a slow leak. You offered to "throw a new tube in" and I (foolishly) assumed this would be affordable. It ended up costing what a bike pump costs. As I said in the shop, I'd have just done it myself if I knew what you were charging. I've worked in bike shops and we didn't charge 30$ for a flat at that time, so I was really surprised. I really am sorry for not asking what it would cost beforehand and for maybe being a little spicy in the shop when I found out the price *after* the labor was performed. I really don't like making anyone's day more stressful so that was my bad too, though no less frustrating. That said ***Please communicate better about pricing *before* rendering services*** I'm bumping this up to a 5 because you were super nice to my dog and are clearly lovely humans. Sorry I got upset. The girls and guys at Ferris Wheels deserve everything good that comes their way and then some. Every single one of them. If you have any doubts about coming here, please don't. You'll get to meet some of the best and most honest folks in the bike shop business. Jeffrey Ferris, the owner, is an amazing individual who battled and survived Leukemia (read his message on their website), Alex is very knowledgeable, and Emily, Patrick, Jeff and Max are really cool and awesome to talk to about pretty much anything (and also quite knowledgeable). And their mechanics. Their mechanics, although mysterious and elusive beings, can do some amazing and magical things when it comes to the maintenance needs of a bicycle. I had work done on my bicycle when I noticed the brakes would rub in the front and my bottom bracket would make tapping noises and sensations. When they fixed that quicker than they said it would take, I took the bike home and discovered another issue: a metal scraping noise in the front wheel hub. I took the bike back and Alex helped me and DIDN'T charge me even though he replaced ball bearings and a cone (I have a cup & cone hub) on one side of the front wheel hub. What's more is when I asked to use their tire pump and accidentally caused a puncture by inflating too rapidly, they patched it WITHOUT charging me. I've been a customer here since I was in middle school (I'm 30 now) and they've just ensured I will shop here for as long as I live in Massachusetts. read more

This is a shady, dirty business. I remember years ago when I went there to buy a bicycle, not knowing anything about bicycles and what they cost. They sold me a used bicycle for hundreds of dollars, actually it was the cost of a new bike, but I didn't know any better. They gave me the manual to the bicycle too. I should have sensed something was up when the employee went to his boss after the sale and showed him the price he sold the bike to me as if he was going to get a pat on the back. The looks on their faces were like they got away with something they shouldn't have. I didn't know any better, and just happy to have a new used bicycle to ride. When I got home, I looked at the manual and found the original receipt that they purchased the bike for hidden in the pages of the manual. They price they bought it from the original owner was hundreds of dollars cheaper than what they sold it to me for. I couldn't believe it, and it was crazy the profit margin they tried to make off that used bike. It was disgusting, and looking back, I remembered the look on their faces like they just found a sucker. I took that bike right back, and told them right then that I wanted a refund. They apologized and offered to sell me something else, but I declined and got my money back instead. The guy I spoke to was so embarrassed. I want to make sure this review is in here for everyone to see. No honest business would do something like that. I went to the bike shop up the street on Centre street and bought a brand new bike for $250. Buyer beware! read more

I brought my bike in for repair, and I was told they could fix it and needed to shorten the chain. When I got my bike back, I couldn't even shift the gear! I complained, but they told me that they'd done their job and refused to do anything further or refund me. I brought the bike to Revolution Bicycle Repair on the way home, and the guy there fixed my issue (which turned out to be a broken gear cable) within minutes. He fixed the cable, oiled the chain, and pumped up my tires, too. So thanks for nothing, Ferris Wheels Bicycle Shop! read more

I just picked up my bike for a seasonal "check over" service they offer ($50). The guys were nice, the time estimate was accurate, but I feel ripped off. They called me and told me I needed a new chain and it would help me shift a lot smoother. They said it would be $25, which sounded fair, and I told them to go ahead. I picked up the bike and they asked me for $91. I asked them how we landed there, and they said they charge $25 for the chain, plus $15 for installation (count the existing links, remove any extras, and pop it on--less than 5 minutes even for a non-mechanic). The bike wasn't even cleaned off, which is one of the most basic services in the check over service. Jenson USA sells this exact KMC chain for $18.99. Upcharging on parts? Didn't even wipe down the bike? Seriously? I'll be doing it myself next time. read more

One August day last summer I was on my way home from work in the usual way. It had been a long and tiring day so I was looking forward to hopping on my bike and cruising home. I exit the train station, cross to the bike rack to where I left my bike.. but wait... Maybe its over... here..????? Where is my bike? WTF!? WHERE IS MY BIKE. Yeah. Some jerk totally stole the crap out of it. So as I stood there crying over my newly departed bike, helmet in hand, I had no idea what things were ahead. Enter Ferris Wheels. After poking around and trying to decide which shop to buy my bike from, I went into Ferris Wheels. It was kind of out of the way for me coming from Somerville but I went met Mark. He was really great to work with. He obviously loves biking and really listened to me in terms of what I wanted and how I ride. We looked at some new bikes in my price range as well as some used ones. I did a couple of test rides and wound up really really really liking a used Cannondale. I just enjoyed riding it. I'll take it! They had to get it ready for me and wanted to make 100% sure everything was in tip top shape. Then I get the thing home. I have it for 24 hours and what do I do? Yeah, I crashed. I did a pretty good job banging myself up and needed to go have a part replaced. I make the trek back to JP where I was greeted by Mark again. I was fixed up and sent on my way. Lets look at why I crashed quickly. The front axle rod was made of steel while the bolt holding it to the bike was aluminum. Naturally the harder steel had stripped the threads and caused a mechanical failure. I feel that this was a major oversight on the shop's part but wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. To err is human, right? I have since gone in on 2 other occasions and while I have a sort of unnatural love for my bike and really appreciate Mark (he's the ONLY reason they have 2 stars), the over feel of the store and the attitude of the owner have turned me off permenantly. I was astounded at the way he was speaking to his employees in front of customers. I've come to learn that is his reputation around JP. Sort of a condescending pretentious way about him. Now I save myself the hassle and have my work done closer to home or I do it myself (hey, I'm learning!) read more

So, I came to Ferris Wheels on the stellar recommendations of fellow Yelpers, and was totally disappointed. I brought my very old and unused bike here for a tune up on June 26th, and spoke with Jeff, the owner, who was indeed very kind and intelligent. Told me the bike was totally fixable, and recommended a new chain, and that it be oiled up, then it would be looked at for further work. Cool. I was told it would be done on July 3rd, and to call if I hadn't heard from them before coming in. Didn't hear anything on the 3rd, so I called on the 5th. I waited on hold for 15 minutes while the guy looked for my bike, and was eventually told that he couldn't find it. He asked me to come in to help him look for it. Went in on the 9th, first chance I had. I spoke with the owner again, who explained that the reason it couldn't be found was because "evaluate for further work" was on the ticket. Okay. Then he explained that this would have to be done by tomorrow, because he was leaving the day after for ten days. He pointed at a guy, and put him in charge of my bike, and said that they would call tomorrow with status as to what was going on. The next day, no one had called me by five, so I called them. Was told it was next in line, and they'd call me within an hour. Nope. Called back, and the store was closed for the day. That was the 10th. Waited a few more days (because my bike was next, right?) and got nothing. Called again, Saturday the 12th, and asked what was going on. I was told that they didn't know, and they asked if they could call me back. Fine. An hour later, I actually got a phone call (yay!), except that it was to tell me that the bike wasn't actually fixable after all, and that I needed to come pick it up. I asked if I would have to pay for the work that had already been done (the chain replaced and the oil), and was told that I didn't have to. Next day, (Sun 7/13), I went in to pick it up, and lo and behold, no work had actually been done, at all. No chain had been replaced, nothing had been oiled before "evaluating for further work". My bike was there for two and a half weeks, and they did absolutely nothing. What a gigantic waste of time and energy. Oh, BTW: I took my bike to the nonprofit Harvard bike shop this weekend, and they said it was totally fixable, gave me a price, and an ETA on actually getting my bike working again. I've been coming here ever since I inadvertently bought a bike built by one of their fantastic mechanics, Alex. He is really well informed and explains things very eloquently. A+ service I'm giving two stars though because I was in on this previous Tuesday to buy a tire and fresh brakes, and my partner was with me hauling her old bike hoping to trade it in and get something new. The employee who helped us, I think his name was Dustin, was incredibly rude to my partner, and when asked about buying a new bike he just kind of brought us downstairs, pointed at one bike and grunted. Alex has always been super cool so I'm really disappointed this guy was so shitty to my girlfriend, who had cash in hand to buy a bike and was super pumped to come in. I also was disappointed that I installed my tires and brakes in store by myself and when I asked for air, Dustin was like "this should be enough till you get to a pump". Dude I just bought an $80 tire and installed it myself, I don't think it's presumptuous to think you would inflate it to the proper pressure. Definitely support this local business though it's rad I just hope the customer service experience improves. read more

This place is the most casual and accepting bike shop around. I used to live by Fenway and the bike shops in the area make you feel like crap every time you have a question. Which is no fun at all... I would probably not go here to buy a new bike (in fact I didnt) but I'd certainly go there for accessories and service. I bought a U-Lock from these guys and when I asked how the mount worked the owner wouldn't let me leave the store without helping me put it on my bike. He was very sweet about it, and he even opened my lights to show me how the battery went in. Sure, I could have figured it out on my own on both accounts, but it certainly is nice to be treated as an important individual rather than an annoying non-hipster. My dude Mark set me up with a sick bicycle situation back in July. He hung out with me for multiple hours while I fell off of various road bikes and decked out my selection with his own basket and lights to use while I was waiting for my catalogue-ordered jazz to come in. There is also an awesome blind dog that's always hanging out here and I still hear from Mark about getting free tune-ups, etc. They take extremely good care of you and have memories like a rolodex. I walked in "just looking" and mentioned that I was seeking a larger-frame road bike. I'm tall with a short torso and long legs, so a 23" at the right price is hard to come by. Mark appeared from the used-bike mecca of their basement and said he had two for me to try -- a beautifully restored Shogun single-speed and a Raleigh (le sigh, it was too big) 12 speed. After a test-ride on the Shogun I was SOLD SOLD SOLD. I grew up riding 70's-era bikes and this sleek little number was PERFECT --especially with its new breaks, chain, saddle, wheels and narrow handlebars. Mark even refitted the pedals with more practical plastic in place of the metal clips (no bike shoes for this girl) and replaced a tire after a thumbtack pierced it on my joyride through JP. Mark, Cassidy and everyone else at Ferris Wheels -- THANK YOU for making my summer and THANK YOU for making buying a bike unintimidating. I'm not a "gearhead," but I know I have a wonderful, lightweight and FAST and CUTE bike. Yippee! read more

I've gotten some bad advice from them and also don't find most of the people who work there to be particularly friendly or give good customer service. As anyone who knows me in the real world can attest, my body is about the cardinal opposite of Lance Armstrong's (then again, I have both my testicles, so #@%$ you Mister Livestrong!). So when I got a bike that needed final assembly and tuning, I was dreading going into a bike shop. But Ferris Wheels was right around the corner, and the Yelp reviews said they were friendly and helpful, so I figured i'd give it a try. And everyone is right! The owner and workers in this bike store are amazingly friendly and helpful. You can tell that they are all *hardcore* bikers, but they don't seem to mind at all a casual interloper like myself in their midst. They got my Frankenbike all assembled and tuned up, were great help in replacing the handlebars with a different set, and have been *super* supportive with service and questions as I re-figure this whole bike thing out. Every square inch of usable space (which isn't all that much, it's a pretty small store) is taken up with something bike related. Bikes, parts, and frames are on the floor, on the walls, and hanging from the ceiling. I half expect to find that the walls themselves are made of interleaved bikes behind the drywall one of these days. read more

I haven't had a good bike for the better part of the last decade, and decided this spring to bite the bullet and buy one. I'm always a little intimidated shopping for bikes, since I don't know too much about how they work. I heard that this place had great customer service, so decided to go in and ask to try a couple of bikes. The staff was incredibly helpful. They listened to what I wanted in a bike, and suggested one that was a very reasonable price, which also included. a free 30 day tuneup. No hard selling! I have been going here for years. Like Michelle C says, they remember you and the ride you're on like its one of the family. Hit and run repairs are not their thing. They look at the whole bike globally, like a doctor, and suggest a general repair as needed. This can feel a little like project scope creep to the first timer, but I assure you that having had my Miyata for 20 years under Jeff's care it is not. I heard good things about the place and I was not disappointed. It was definitely busy and a bit crowded but why shouldn't it be? The sales guy (wish I remembered his name to give him some props) was fantastic. It took him about 15 minutes to get to us but when he did, he really spent the time. He knew most customers by name and learned our names and kept repeating them so he wouldn't forget - great service and not a lot of pressure to buy. He listened to our needs, didn't talk down to us, and showed us many bike options. For myself, I usually go to Landry's in Boston or International Bike. This place was so much more down to earth and much more suited to the normal person who isn't a hardcore racer. The only issue is that it gets crowded and busy. Great customer service. A few weeks ago, the clips on two different panniers broke shortly after purchasing. Turns out, the manufacturer had acknowledge a design error and was honoring its warranty - and in turn, Ferris Wheels was exchanging broken bags. By no fault of the bike shop, it turned into a few visits to the shop to get everything sorted out: Marcus was attentive, congenial, and communicative through the whole process. Thanks, Marcus! I give four stars because there have been more than a few instances where there is a small gathering of people waiting for service/check-out, and though mechanics are in eyesight they tend to ignore the customers - I don't blame them (they are servicing bikes and don't want to interrupt to do otherwise), but it makes for an uncomfortable and sometimes lengthy wait for customers. Also, service is a little pricey - that being said, you get what you pay for and I appreciated the one or two calls they gave me in the process to make sure I got what I wanted. Overall, great shop - my bike is riding like a dream for the summer and I'm stoked to have such a nice neighborhood shop. read more

Recently had trouble with the bike rack installed on my car - the unlocking mechanism to move the arms was super tight and not budging (I admittedly had not used the rack in a while). I called the store where I bought the rack and they were less than helpful (even told me I didn't know how to work the rack at first until they stopped to listen to the problem). I called Ferris Wheels because I bought my bike there last year and remembered it was a great and easy experience. They had me bring my car and bike rack by the shop right away and Jeff was able to loosen the mechanism in less than 2 minutes. So appreciative given that I didn't even buy the bike rack there and they saved me from having to leave my bike in Boston for an extended period of time (I was in the process of moving)! read more

I had an experience at Ferris Wheels that made me lose absolutely all faith in them. I bought a used, high-end road bike (expensive) online and had it shipped directly to Ferris Wheels for assembly. They assembled it, I picked it up after work, put it on my bike rack / drove it home 5 minutes away, rode it around the block a few times. I was admiring my new bike in my kitchen afterwards, when I noticed a small crack in the frame. I knew that the bike had cosmetic damage before I bought it, but on closer inspection, this was an actual hairline fracture of the carbon frame - subtle, but serious. The bike had been in my possession for less than an hour. I took it right back to them the next morning, a little horrified that they had assembled and sent me out on a bike with a structurally damaged frame, and they immediately went on the offensive and insisted that it was "impossible" that they could have missed the crack - it had to have occurred after they assembled it. I can assure you that it did not! It was incredibly insulting - they essentially called me a liar. I wasn't even asking for my money back! I was just in shock that this beautiful bike that I had just bought was damaged (likely during its across-country shipping via train, before Ferris Wheels ever laid hands on it). Fortunately, the seller who I bought the bike from deduced that it must have been damaged in transit by Fedex and was able to offer a refund (he had insured the shipment) as soon as I shipped it back to him. I was so upset with Ferris Wheel bikes at the way that they had treated me, that I asked them to re-pack to bike to be shipped back to the seller (it seemed like they least they could do after charging me $90 to assemble a structurally damaged, potentially dangerous bike). Mind you, I never lost my cool with any of this or anything - was always nice about it, just very heartbroken. They did agree to re-pack the bike up for me without hesitation. I gave them a shipping label and asked if they would mind scheduling a pickup with Fedex (they said they do this all the time) - seemed like the best way to do it since they said they ship bikes out routinely. Two days later, the Fedex shipment status was still "waiting to be received." So I went back to Ferris Wheels to see what was going on. "Oh, we couldn't reach them to schedule a shipment because of they holidays, so we just threw it on the Fedex truck when they stopped by this morning. I think it was the Fedex truck..." My heart sank - the delivery driver hadn't scanned the package when he picked it up, because they had just "thrown it on the truck." As of that moment, I had absolutely no documentation that Fedex had received the package, and if it had been lost (or put on the wrong truck), I would have lost my refund ($3000) because it would have been impossible to prove that Fedex had received it. My anxiety shot the roof, and I explained to the staff at Ferris Wheels what a disaster this could potentially be for me ($3000 is a lot of money to me). They were once again unapologetic for their carelessness, completely blase about it, and reassured me that I should "relax, because getting anxious about it won't help." Easy for them to say, they were not the ones who might have just lost $3000 on a bike! 36 hours later (and three hours of my time on the phone with Fedex) my package was finally located, it made its way back to the original seller, and I got my refund. But I think it took a year off my life, all because of the sheer carelessness of Ferris Wheels. Ferris Wheels let me down big time on several major accounts: 1) they assembled a bike with structural damage (didn't notice it), sent me out on that bike, and accused me of breaking the bike myself, never apologized, let alone offer me a refund for the assembly, 2) they were completely careless in shipping the bike back to the seller, and managed to nearly lose it. Worst of all, through all of this, they were entirely unconcerned - completely apathetic. You lost a customer, dudes. My advice to anyone is: pay a little more money and go to a more professional shop. read more

So, it took a moment of smugness, so perfect that it resonated with everything that irritates me, to get back on Yelp! I haven't written a review in over a year. And, I guess that's good, because usually when I write one it's because something happened to me that made me want to hate the human race. Often, they aren't even about the place I'm reviewing, but rather an experiential reflection of the moment-to-moment while engaged with an establishment. Usually I'll reflect on something, and then sneak in a personal story. And, although I often write reviews that are scathing about a person or people, I hardly ever write one that is negative about an actual business. This time I'm going to reflect on a personal thing that happened to me at Ferris Wheels, as well as their business model. So, in other words, my criticism of this place is both personal disdain and an actual criticism of a business. It's my significant other's birthday. And he just got a bicycle. I was surprised at this because we ride motorcycles, and bicyclists sometimes irritate me. They are always coming up behind me on a path and almost hitting me. You cyclists out there, did it ever occur to you how disconcerting it is to have someone buzz you from behind on a bicycle when you're trying to take a peaceful walk in the park? Of course not, because you ride a bicycle, you own all paths, and you're saving the world and baby seals with your courier bags and sense of entitlement. I also love it when cyclists take their lives into the hands of unsuspecting drivers. Yes, you could die of a subdural hematoma, and the driver of that pickup truck could go to jail, just because you think your sense of self importance will somehow shield you from two tons of hurtling steel. Not that I side with cars. Boston drivers are awful. But that's a story for another critique. But I digress, lest you not think this is about my frustration with hipsters on fixed gear bikes. Anyway, my significant other, it's his birthday and he just got a bike. He is courteous and kind, so I'm sure he won't buzz anyone or act like cars are invisible. But, nonetheless, I think he needs a helmet, some lights, and that sort of thing. I want him to have a relaxing and enjoyable experience on his bicycle, without getting injured. So, I went into Ferris Wheels Bike Shop at 9:50 am this morning. The door was unlocked. The lights were on. There was music playing. "What's up?" the guy at the counter said. So far so good. "I'm looking for a bike pump and a helmet and some other stuff." He glanced at the sign on the door, like a teacher who thinks you are cheating or a cop who thinks you blew a stop sign. Hours: 10am-7pm. Oh, I see. They don't open for 10 minutes. "Oh, you're not open...?" I said. He looked at me like I was trying to take his bone. "I can come back." "Really?" he said. "That's a good idea." and he's all gruff here, "I'm not open and I have to set up the cash register and I have all this to get through." Basically "get out." OK. So, why is the door unlocked? Do you like to lure people in and then mess with their self-esteem? I've had similar things happen at the deli counter at Harvest Market. I can't get you some potato salad because I have talk to my coworker about what happened on the last Phish reunion tour. I guess in Jamaica Plain Center-South there is something in the water that makes people think that patrons are an annoyance. And, I might say, "I'd love to help keep you in business with 10 years of loyal shopping, but you know what? I'd rather get edible food from Whole Foods and I'd rather give my money to Back Bay Bicycles, because they are nice there." Did I mention the economy is collapsing? Do you think I'll feel bad when your business fails because you are rude and entitled? "Ok, sure. I'll come back later," I said. But, I never will. Ever. Because you see, the economy is collapsing and I brought my $200 sale to Back Bay Bicycles, where I was treated with respect and dignity. I don't mind being turned away from a place that isn't ready to open. What I mind is a basic lack of regard for manners. If he was even remotely polite, I would have waited the 10 minutes on the bench outside in 20 degree weather. And I would have paid 1/3 more than I did at Back Bay Bicycles, because I like to support local businesses. But, no. The guy behind the counter is just like the cyclists that buzz me and my dog in the park. No respect. No idea that they aren't the best citizens, but in fact rather offensive ones. I hate to give this place a bad review. We've been trying to use them for bike repairs and purchases since they're in the neighborhood. But as another reviewer pointed out, they are so disorganized! We've found them to be nice enough -- but not once have we bought something or had a repair done where it has been done on time. They something will be finished, we call before we go - -and it is never done yet. They lose bikes in their store all of the time, misplace sales tickets. I'd love to help the little guy, but they are so disorganized that I don't think we can continue to devote so much time to this! read more

When I lived in boston, I use to go to ferris wheels all the time. In fact I bought a bike there a while back. I recently went there with my wife's bike for repairs and I am interested in buying a bike for myself. My wife's bike ( bianchi) needed a lot of work. I went there at 4:54 and the door was locked ( supposed to be open until 5:00) The gentleman behind the counter glanced up at me and then ignored me. I just walked away and I will not be back. I am writing this for the owner. Tell your employees to keep the door unlocked until closing please. Or just write 5:00 ish on the store hours. I really was hoping to give you my business. read more

I own 2 bikes and have been living in Jamaica Plain for the last 8 years. After my last visit to Ferris Wheels Bike Shop, I am never going back! The owner of the shop has consistently been rude, arrogant, and condescending! If you live in Jamaica Plain and would like to buy a bike, or you need service on an existing bike, I would very highly recommend Bike's Not Bombs on Amory Street. They specialize mostly in city and refurbished bikes. if you're looking for a high performance bike, Community Cycle on Tremont Street in the South End is another good place to go. I've received far better service at both of those places that at Ferris Wheels. read more

I was assured by more that one employee at the store that they have remarkable success with stuck seat posts so I entrusted them to try. Not only did they fail, they bent the post rendering the frame useless. If they had explained that this was one of the outcomes of their trying, I never would left the bike there. I wish this place wasn't so overpriced. $90 (or more as I was told over the phone) for a tune-up? I needed a bottom bracket installed and didn't have the right tool so popped over to Ferris to see how much it would cost. $20 dollars. Ha. I went over to BnB's and paid 20 dollars for the tool that will allow me to do it myself. Thanks, Ferris Wheels! read more

After being hit by a taxi my front fork was mangled. I brought my bike to Ferris Wheels thinking I needed a new fork but they told me they could bend it back to normal. I was extremely happy with the service I received. Helpful staff, bike back in about 4 days and not expensive. It would have been more for a new fork which wouldn't have matched my old school Peugeot. I will return here for all my biking needs. read more
