Place was packed on a Sunday and we had a big group... Result: 1 hour wait. Place has a funky local vibe, bones look very much like the pool hall it used to be. Totally worth a wait- the 2 owners made sure libations were provided -all Ontario craft beers- while we hovered and then, the food! Went to Ferro with girlfriends over the holidays. Made a reservation for 5, didn't care for our table right beside the kitchen but they moved us by the front perfect. However while waiting at the door to be seated we waited several minutes fine, but several servers saw us and ignored us. I get its busy but acknowledging the customers is their first priority. Our server seemed a little rattled at first but she was busy and I've been there but after that smooth sailing. Drinks, wine, appies, mains were all good. I do have to mention though other reviewers raved about the magic mushroom appie and ours was very chewy and was hard to bite through without eating it in a large gulp so there was that. Moving on, our water was always filled without asking which is great and we really enjoyed the fun atmosphere. Not sure if he was the owner or manager but he took our reservation on the phone and came over to us and brought yummy shots on the house and was super nice. A pretty average place in my opinion. Not amazing but not horrible. We ordered a few drinks, a kale salad, and two pizzas. The salad was tasty, but in all honesty, when has a kale caesar salad ever been a disappointment. It's a pretty tough salad to mess up. Our pizzas, a mushroom white pizza and a spicy sausage pizza were good, but really nothing special. I would rate a bunch of other pizzas I've had in the city above these. The service was pretty horrible, but I'm not going to bash the servers too hard because it was hard to tell if they were absent because they lacked care or because the restaurant was understaffed on a Tuesday evening. The female server never showed up to take our order (manager had to tend to us) and she really only showed up to fill water and deliver us our food. I probably won't be back only because there are better options in this city filled with an abundance of Italian restaurants. read more

We just visited last night for our first time and were gravely disappointed. The food was terrible. Entrees were priced between $20 to $30 but didn't meet the requirements of the premium in price. The staff was rude, indifferent and couldn't manage serving a table in an orderly fashion. There are so many better Italian restaurants that surpass in Italian cuisine...namely Torrino and Mercatto. Just after we got there the obviously new waiter went to put some food on our table that wasn't ours. The other waiter (possibly owner?) berated him right in from of us for not knowing the table numbers, which we thought was a little rude, nobody is perfect when they start. But if you are going to berate someone else publicly, at least be good at your own job! The waiter/owner spent so long watching this new waiter, he forgot to put our starter order through, and messed up our main orders. He blamed the kitchen for messing up, but clearly he was preoccupied with bugging the new guy that he i quite a piss poor job if serving himself! Food was ok. Nice enough, but not to die for. Was here the other night with hubby and son. They ordered the piatto to di pesce, which they really enjoyed. I had my regular (been there three times) of pizza Margarita. Not good at all. Hardly any fior di latte mozzarella, just dabs of it. Loved it the other two times! This time, boring, all sauce. I was really looking forward to that pizza, too! Just to be clear, i do not like soggy pizza. Too many moist ingredients and not enough heat. Limp. Sadly, the other four people at my table came to similar conclusions. This was not the worst part of the dining experience, however. To be blunt, our server was an a$$. He was unhelpful, rude and quite obviously did not want to be doing what he was doing. We visited Ferro Bar and Cafe for Valentine's Day as we read many great reviews online. We were quite disappointed with our experience ... The restaurant is very poorly insulated so if you sit close to the brick wall you will feel cold for the entire meal. We understand that the restaurant was quite busy and due to this, the waitress was not able to move us to a different table. Many people ate their dinner in their winter coats due to how cold it was. To start off the waitress brought bread with olive oil and vinegar as most Italian restaurants do. The bread did not seem very fresh and it was not warmed up at all; to be fair not all Italian restaurants warm up the bread but at "nice" Italian restaurants the bread is either very fresh or it is warmed up that way it is more enjoyable. We ordered the funghi (mushroom) pizza as an appetizer. The flavour of the pizza was amazing but unfortunately we were served a pizza where most of the top of the pizza was burnt. We actually had to peal off the burnt parts which was unfortunate because the flavour of the pizza was quite good but unsure why they would serve the burnt pizza after realizing it was burnt rather than cooking a new one. We ordered a pasta each and neither of us were impressed. When you go to an Italian restaurant you expect the pasta to be above average and I would barely say the pasta was average. I ordered the pasta gorgonzola cream sauce and I did not taste any gorgonzola cheese, it tasted more like a rose sauce and was pink instead of white(the colour gorgonzola cream sauce should be). Overall we were not impressed by Ferro Cafe and Bar. I am not sure if the food was inferior because it was Valentine's Day weekend and they were busy, but it is not an excuse to serve poor quality food. We were expecting to eat good Italian food and our experience was far from it. We would definitely not recommend this restaurant. The service was good but the food was quite poor!!! read more

6 of us ate there this Tuesday. Was nice to see the place busy so my expectations were hopeful. The bruschetta and magic mushrooms were good. But the mains arrived at various times, first 1, then 2 more, then another 2 and finally the last one. They were several minutes apart, you might expect this at a lower end place but was this was not very professional. My pasta Calabrese was spicer than suicide buffalo wings, it wasn't chili peppers as the menu said but loaded with jalapenos. I couldn't eat it and sent it back, requesting the same without chilis. It was bland and the sausage tasted off which makes me think the jalapenos were to cover the slightly off meat. Others had bland pasta and so-so meals. In addition to poor delivery of mains, the staff would pull appetizer plates off the table and not realize utensils fell on the floor and left them. Water pitchers were carried around with water spilling onto the floor. The whole meal was very unimpressive - I would avoid this place. read more

I was excited to have dinner here to celebrate my cousins birthday July 25, 2014. We decided to ask the ladies that worked there what they would suggest. They suggested a main dish and myself and cousin tried it. Our food came and they asked if we wanted cheese and black pepper - we said yes and was happy with our visual of the food. My cousin had hers first and was happy, then I was about to put my 1st fork full to my mouth and out comes a long black hair. I was upset but kept my cool. The owner came over and said we NEVER find hair in our food. Okay fine so they wiped me up another. I ate with hesitation but manage to finish. We have been to this restaurant several times before but only because it is close to home. We had always thought it was mediocre and slightly overpriced. However, we went last week to give it one last try and we were blown away. The quality and quantity was off the charts! The service was excellent. We asked about the drastic change and were told that there had been some changes in their kitchen. Well, that has made all the difference. Sat in gum. They did NOT care. Said, "if you sat in gum at the park, would you ask the city to pay for your pants?" I said, "a park is outside. It was crazy-busy when we arrived so we had to wait for a table. But once we were seated, it was worth the wait. For apps, I had the magic mushrooms and they were a little difficult to eat but very tasty. But main was magnificent. It was a linguine dish with a lobster tail, scallops, and veggies and it was perhaps the finest pasta dish I've had. The service was surprisingly quite well organized even though it was insanely busy. And the servers were pleasant to interact with which is always a plus. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in the city! I normally come with my friends and family 1-3 times per month and the food is always great, especially the mussels and eggplant parmesan. They have an amazing selection of wine and the ambiance is stylish and cool. The staff are also very attentive and overall, this restaurant makes you feel at home. Pest control is needed at this place! You can hear rats scratching from the fans. I came here for my wife's birthday and everything was going well, terrific ambiance, service, food was ok, but then I heard rats scratching on the fan right beside my chair. I wrote the same feedback at urbanspoon and my comments got deleted 3 times !! - I read great things about this place before but now I get why as any negative review magically disappears. If the owner is so concerned with the restaurant image on the internet then they should fix the issue instead of jeopardizing the health and safety of the patrons! read more

Love this place-has been a neighborhood go-to for years for me. Prices not cheap but reasonable for the portions. Magic mushroom appy (think assorted mushrooms in a garlic/cheese sauce on crostini) are to die for. Lots of good pastas and their pizzas are actually delish-thin, chewy crust and varied, great toppings. Several good salads although I wish they'd bring back the original "Ferro" salad. Reasonable wine options. Can be loud on a busy evening. Tiny but pleasant front patio. Staff are almost always great or at least pleasant. Worth a visit, especially if you live nearby. read more

Great service and delicious dishes, including the magic mushrooms; the fusilli was scrumptious, but I had some dinner envy going on after observing my friend's Black Angus steak plate. Terrible. Our meals were missing main ingriedients like scollops and mussels, the 8 oz steak on the salad would be lucky to be 4 oz's and the marinara could be better made by hunts. The service, although tried to be nice, was terrible. From taking away the app plate befor we were done to actually taking a drink from my hand (blaming it on miscommunication) fyi a B52 isn't a difficult drink to make. The manager was some 25 year kid that couldn't be bothered to find out what our concerns really were. Too many great italian resturants in the city to ever return to this one. Oh and if you call ahead, be prepared to be recorded by god knows who for god knows what kind of investigation, but don't worry, theie is a nice recording to warn you of this. read more

Given that it always seems busy, I was surprised by the mediocre food and terrible service at Ferro. We waited a long time for water and bread, though our main dishes arrived quickly. The food was OK - nothing spectacular, and certainly not worth the price or the experience. While our servers were generally very friendly and attentive, we were served primary by an older gentleman - I'd guess the owner or manager - who was horrible. He repeatedly came over to take our order and, even though we made it clear we were waiting for the last of our party to arrive, was visibly annoyed that we weren't ready. The restaurant wasn't busy at all, but he seemed to want us out as quickly as possible. He was aggressive, exasperated when we asked questions about the wine or menu, and did not seem to know anything about the dishes. He didn't ask us if we needed anything else - another glass of wine, or a dessert menu. I wasn't particularly impressed with the food, but I most definitely won't be going back thanks to this guy! read more

Great food, terrible service. It was my birthday, not once did my straight faced waiter wish me a happy birthday. My friends brought me an ice cream cake which they asked to have stored for dessert. Gladly they agreed to store it, not mentioning that there would be a $16 FEE. The first and most important request I made was for a high chair. We finished dinner, but the highchair never arrived; which of course means my husband and I ate dinner with a toddler on our lap and one-handed. That wouldn't have been such a huge deal; had my baby not slipped off the bench we were on, bust his chin on the table with a loud bang- and not have even ONE of the workers come over to make sure he was okay! Shows how much they care! Needless to say; had my high chair been provided like I requested, my son would've been safe and sound in it. Most importantly; DO NOT give them your honest opinion when it comes to your taste buds. My friend made that mistake, and we all paid for it! Ashley, our server, rudely asked why the food was not to her liking, and when she got her answer, Ashley snatched the receipt off of my friend's hand. Oh let's not forget to mention that our ONE bill came without being requested (hint hint) and when we questioned the 16$ fee, Ashley responded as if it's a well known fee. Had we known about it, we would've made other arrangements. Once the bills came separately (which Ashley didn't miss the chance to display her irritation towards us when we requested them), they were incorrect. Damn us for bringing that to her attention!! We almost got our head cut off for doing so! After we paid, there was no thanks, my sister had her receipt thrown at her and we STILL left a tip- not that she deserved it. On our way out, Ashley went out of her way to avoid us and didnt even bother to wish us a good night, was visibly angry and upset, all bc we asked for seperatw bills and gave an honest opinion. Excuss us, but we werent aware that ppl had different taste buds and not everyone will like your food!! Great food (i really do like it and have always talked about them positively), but not worth the service.
