Mounds of sides - I typically go for salad (lettuce, tomato, onion, vinegarette) and fries. Might be paying a little bit more compared to another popular Portuguese BBQ place, however portions are well - proportionate! The decor is certainly not high end, it's more of a in and out kinda establishment but well worth a visit. Of course you can dine in too if you need somewhere to sit and eat. What I like most about their chicken is that it's nice and moist. Though it would have been nice if they provided some home made traditional sauce instead of packets of ketchup. If you can, skip out on the carbs (rice or fries). They are not seasoned well. What~? I haven't reviewed this place yet? Practically ate here almost everyday for over a year! BBQ is a very personal thing and everyone has his/her favorite joint(s). Regardless of favorites, Ferry Street still does it solid and at a fantastic price. As soon as you walk in the place, you are welcomed by smoke. Literally. The ventilation is not the best, but who gives~ You're there for the food. Go breathe clean air somewhere else. 1/2 chicken is going to run you about $8 (take out). Personally, I prefer the ribs though ($11~$12). It's got that nice char and smokey flavor that I just can't resist. They use salt pretty liberally, so it could get a bit salty at times. Another warning is that they lay on the rice and fries here. I don't know how many times I have told them to go easy, but they are hell bent on loading that plate up until your stomach gives out and cry for mercy. Guess that's not such a bad thing. read more

As far as Portuguese BBQ goes this place is 5 stars. The chicken and ribs are always amazing. I live much closer to it now but I used to regularly drive 25 minutes to pick up food there because there were no Portuguese BBQ restaurants that came close. The portions are generous and the prices are very affordable. I typically only pickup food from here, I've eaten once or twice inside, their indoors isn't too nice but it's fine if you're in the mood for a very casual dinner. You'll often see a line that starts outside, but don't be intimidated, the wait times generally are a max of 10 minutes, everyone behind the counter works extremely hard. Been coming to this place for years I travel from Bayonne just to come get this some of this barbecue. This spot has been my favorite Portuguese bbq spot for a long time. Unfortunately this 2 star review isn't because of the food. This bad review is because the last few times I've been here the service from the waitresses there has gotten worse and worse lately... completely down the drains honestly. The service has gotten so bad it's to the point I refuse to leave a tip and I ask for my exact change back. It's crappy because it's not like I'm a cheap tipper... I was in Newark and I heard that Portuguese BBQ was the thing to get. Based on recommendations from yelpers, I tried this place. I was on my way home, so I got takeout - the 1/2 chicken, 1/2 ribs combo with rice and fries. Let me tell you the portions are huge. You get a big tin tray full of food for $14, not bad. The food is pretty good. The only thing that keeps me from giving this place a 5 star rating was the meat was a little dry and there wasn't much sauce on it. I do know Portuguese BBQ places do not use much sauce, but I felt like the meat could use a bit more than what was on it. I may try getting some sauce for takeout for next time. I ended up getting 4 full meals from this, so it was a really good deal. I would definitely come back again! read more

I came here for lunch one afternoon - horrible experience and service. I'm a reasonable person and I rarely give bad reviews but they have a lot of cleaning up to do. PROS: - we were immediately seated CONS: - after ordering, we waited so long that our lunch our was over. Our waitress (or whatever she was) completely forgot about our order. - when the food arrived, it was cold - my ribs were dry and salty AND they refused to give me BBQ sauce. Really? What's ribs w/o BBQ sauce?? - NO ONE spoke English (A huge problem for me) - the staff lack the ability to multitask. When I went inside to ask for a bag, everyone was completely swamped and busy ....and seemed annoyed that I didn't know Spanish (that's another issue ...but I won't go into it here) - there were flies everywhere (GROSS); Flies land on s**** and leave saliva. As you wait to be seated, you smell the charcoal with the sweet scent of barbeque meat. We waited about 20 minutes to be seated and once seated our waitress came to take our order right away. We ordered the chicken and pork ribs combo at a very reasonable price of 15.00 dollars. Chicken and ribs where seasoned with sea salt which was very nice. The yellow rice that came with it was good and regular show strong fries where also included. If your down neck in iron bound this is the place to come for food! The bbq is fantastic! So today my lady and I were in search for some awesome grilled seafood. Thanks to my fellow yelpers we gave this spot a try and boy ohh boy were we pleased! Today we decided to dine outside. Cool spot, but if your looking for white table cloths... You'll be sad lol. We ordered the grilled salmon and the garlic shrimp (eating healthy peeps). It came with rice or fries, we opted for one of each and a small salad! Flavor town arrived! Awesome seafood, awesome seasoning and shrimp was packed with buttery garlic chunks! The salmon was amazing. It was 2 lovely pieces of salmon and grilled right. The garlic shrimp was amazing as well! French fries were ok and the yellow rice did its job! I think this an awesome place to enjoy some great food at a great price! With tip everything came out to $45. "Confusion and Carb overload" is the perfect way to describe Ferry St. Barbeque. The chicken is good- I agree completely. And I had the salmon which was A-OK to say the least. And my side salad was sort of sad looking but I did appreciate the fact that they just lightly sprinkle it with vinegar rather than drown it in dressing. But a huge platter of rice & french fries really isn't my idea of a great meal. I will eat it though but that doesn't say a lot because I eat like an animal and I will devour food even if I'm not feeling it. This food was good and the french fries were yummy but it's just not food I'd crave or go crazy over. However, it IS a great deal. The food is so cheap it sort of makes up for their disorganization and lack of service or smiles from the staff. Sort of. And I'm from Manhattan, the city you may pay $16 for lunch at a Whole Foods hot bar, so the prices at Ferry Street amaze me. But once again, the food is simply OK. To be honest I prefer Peruvian chicken. Perhaps that's why I'm not very convinced by Portuguese chicken, "the other P." Peruvian chicken is rotisserie and this one is BBQ and I get it- there's a difference. And that's that. At least the waitress listened to me because I spoke Spanish, sorry non-Spanish speakers. Whenever I'm within a stone-throw from Newark's Ironbound section I go out of my way to stop by Ferry St. BBQ. This Portuguese inspired BBQ is the gathering spot for many locals. It is all about the food. Service is slow and depending on whom get, not very friendly. But when the food arrives all is forgiven. I usually order a combo of 1/2 rins and 1/2 chicken with salad and either rice or shoe-string fries. They prepare all BBQ with a rub of spices and on a grill whose top is rotated by the grillman so that the other side may be cooked. This evening I enjoyed the meal with a Guarana drink. Guarana is a Brazilian soda that tastes to me like traditional bubble-gum and is loaded with caffeine and sugar.--precisely what I needed for the return trip to the City after stuffing myself with BBQ. read more

I am coming off a Ferry Street BBQ high while I update my almost two year old review, so beware. When ON, Ferry Street's ribs and chicken combo is SO ON it's ridiculous. Their food is best eaten hot and sitting down, but just as good in the car on the way home. The chicken is moist and flavorful when served and eaten immediately... if eaten later, no comment. Just kidding, it's still flavorful but moist? Let's not kid ourselves. Ribs are perfection here, as are the fries. I love their rice too. I love it all. We only ever get the rib/chicken combo with rice and fries, and with two cans of soda, the cash total is $16. SIXTEEN DOLLARS. If you pay with card, there is tax and the look of "we prefer cash" all over their beautiful faces... so pay with cash money. Been here a dozen times or so, and dining in always feels sort of weird because you stand at the counter and sort of point/gesture to a table and/or wait until they ask if you're staying, but you're standing on line with all the people getting food to go. Sometimes I help myself to my own beverages, sometimes they help me. The last time we asked, did not receive, grabbed them ourselves, and I realized everyone else around us had glasses with ice. I don't like that difference in treatment, but I go often enough to sort of just chalk it up to neglectfulness and not something more twisted. Because you don't want me feeling twisted about this place. Big up to the lady in red with the slicked back ponytail who works behind the counter and hacks the ribs with a cleaver. I keep thinking about having it again. Very nicely seasoned, juicy and perfectly cooked. The ribs were probably in the 3.5 range.
