My sister and I lived in Fieldbrook in the 60s and 70s. We always try to visit the little town whenever we can. It's really nice that the little market is reopened with a casual restaurant. The ladies who were working today were friendly and nice. My sister had a Caesar salad, my niece had the barbecue chicken salad and I had the BLT. We were all happy with our food and it was nice to visit the town again. We are told that they have karaoke on some nights and live music on others. Fieldbrook Market and Eatery is less than 10 minutes from Highway 101 in the McKinleyville area. It is a great place to go for lunch or to grab a drink. FME is more than a market or a place to get a bite or a beer. It is a community center for the people that live in and around Fieldbrook. When we got there, we had a hard time finding a place to park. It seems like there was a party going on--we could hear lots of people having fun--behind the market in a huge tent. We later found out that after people get food from the eatery, they can take their food back to the tent and catch up with their friends. The eatery has a bar that you can sit at or take your food back to the large tent that I described earlier. You can watch the cooks prepare your food. I ordered a Ruben and asked for it to be an open face sandwich. What they did, to my surprise, was that they took each piece of bread and put corn beef, sauerkraut, and cheese on each piece of bread. It was really enough food for my hubby and myself--and yummy!!! He ordered a delicious cup of Tuscany soup and a cheeseburger - both very delicious. He had a red beer, and I had a Cherry cider. I was happy to see that they also have kombucha on tap!!! The market is a country market where you can buy basic things like kindling, toilet paper or primary groceries. A local man told me that they used to have the tallest redwoods in the world at Fieldbrook - over 400 feet tall. The walls of the market have some of the old saws that were used to cut the trees down in 1896. They were also games on the shelves for you to play with. The place was very eclectic. There were some leather goods for sale, as well as Amber beads. I wish we had had more time to really look at everything that was there. read more

I was surprised to see the five star rating and then of course I had to try it. I'll start by Raving about the house made pickles that garnished my plate, they are spot on perfect pickle deliciousness! I had the Ruben and the corned beef was stellar. Just the right amount of 1000 dressing and whole grain Mustard. I could eat this everytime! My partner had a burger (what else is New? Lol) with blue cheese. Cooked great, lots of blue cheese and a very tasty bun. The tri-tip chili was meaty and yummy but maybe a bit bland. The service was very nice as well. We will 100% be back. read more

We found this spot on Yelp when looking for an early dinner during our road trip along the coast. We didn't realize that it was a bit off our main route but we kept driving and found ourselves outside what looked like a small neighborhood market. At first we weren't sure if we found the right place. When you walk inside you see an order counter and open kitchen area with a small market/convenience store shopping area and a couple tables. We decided to order two burgers and a beer. When we stepped outside we realized they had a really cute covered outdoor patio that was dog friendly! There was plenty of space for large groups and an outdoor projector playing something on the screen. The burgers were tasty and fresh. They came out pretty quick and it gave us the fuel we needed to get back on the road. I definitely recommend this cute place! read more

We were excited to try this place because of the really great reviews. We ordered the Tri-Tip sandwich, the veggie burger, and 4 of the Garden Goddess sandwiches. We were surprised that it took such a long time to get our food when the place was empty and they had 3 people working on making our food. My son enjoyed his veggie burger. It wasn't the best he's eaten but good. The tri-tip sandwich didn't have a lot of flavor and was disappointing. 2 of us loved the Garden sandwich and thought it tasted really fresh, and loved the toasted sourdough bread, and the other 2 took one bite and wouldn't eat the rest. This is a hidden gem. This place is a spacious store, bar and eatery. You are allowed to bring your dog inside or go around back to a covered area with picnic tables. Inside they offer beers on tap or you can get one from the refrigerated section. You can choose snacks from the shelves or you can order prepared food from behind the counter. We wanted outdoor dining and the Fieldbrook market and eatery fit the bill perfectly. We sat under the tent out back with a cool breeze and fluffy white clouds moving behind picturesque evergreens. The setting was rustic with bark covering the ground. Picnic tables and rounders filled the area. There were also picnic table in the sun. This is an order, pay, and seat yourself kind of place and signs to bus your own dishes. The food was good. I got the quesadilla with beef. They used a 12" tortilla and were not skimpy on the cheese nor beef. We all shared a salad with the miso dressing. My husband and I were searching for sandwiches when this place popped up on yelp and we decided to try it. This is a grocery store/deli and restaurant with really awesome outdoor seating and even a volleyball net in the back! The woman who helped us out was super friendly, she explained how drinks work (you pick your own from the store, save your bottle til the end of your meal, and they scan it at the register when you pay for your food), she took our order and we went outside and found a table. The vibe is cool, like hanging out at a friend's BBQ. We ordered the grass fed burger with cheese and added avocado and then we created the biggest sandwich I've ever had in my life! Seriously this sandwich (turkey, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle on a French roll with mayo and mustard) was unexpectedly ginormous!! The Fieldbrook market and eatery is more than just a small town market, it is a community hub. Yes, it's a convenience store with all of the basics one would expect to find - snacks, drinks, smokes, etc. This cool store also makes some of the best food around, along with a great back yard porch area and live music on the weekends - this place at times can be jumping with activity especially during the lunch hours. An unassuming front with a few parking places (several diagonal spaces to the left as you look at the building) it doesn't look like much. Upon entering the register/counter is immediately to your left, the inside is surprisingly quite open and large. To your right, the service deli counter and a small bar with a handful of seats (the taps are here) look to the chalkboard for the menu. The "order here" sign has two pads for made to order sandwiches and salads - just feel it out and turn it in. At the back are glass door chill cases loaded with pretty much everything imaginable to drink - all available in single units (you don't have to buy it by the six pack, etc.) so you can grab a cold one and sit out back and enjoy the day, afternoon, evening. This is a great community market, store, gathering place to enjoy really good fresh food, cold beverages and live music on the weekends. The menu is small, my items pictured plus a breakfast sandwich and a two egg breakfast. This must be why their gravy is the best gravy we've ever had. Time to focus in perfecting the recipe? Yes. Quite possibly the best sandwiches in Humboldt. From the tri tip sandwich with au jus to the corned beef sandwich. Lightly toasted bread, meat piled high and they are huge. You probably won't need a side. I think the only down side is the draft beer selection almost never changes but that's easily remedied by grabbing a single out of the beer fridge. The 2 eggs and bacon with potatoes - perfectly poached eggs the way you want - and thick cut bacon not the thin fatty kind. I've been here a couple of times now and everything has been sooo good. Their grilled sandwiches are so perfectly crisp. The Reuben was the best I've ever had anywhere, good amount of kraut and wonderful creamy cheese. I could only eat half, but it reheated beautifully the next day. My husband's BLT was equally impressive, with lots of bacon and tomato. The smoked tuna was great...takes tuna salad to a whole new level! As our busy day was winding down, I decided to once again look for a hidden gem in the Arcata area. Boy did I hit the jackpot! If you are looking for something right off the freeway, this is not for you. If you are up for a 5 mile, winding drive, surrounded by gorgeous greenery and trees, here you go! This charming market/cafe is loaded with charm and personality. As soon as we walked in, Ryan greeted us and made us feel right at home. He made two suggestions that seemed to call our names, the tri tip sandwich, and the avocado bacon burger. The tri tip melts in your mouth and is honestly big enough for two people to share. We later learned that it could be ordered with mushrooms on top, although it does perfectly fine on its own. The burger was almost flawless, with the exception of the bacon being a little too crispy for my liking. No points deducted for that, it was really no big deal. We had a couple of the local brews to was down our dinner, and finished off the meal with chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven. Overall, this place is worth every bit of the extra drive! You can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches at the Fieldbrook Market. The BLT is the best I've ever had, the chipotle mayo takes it to the next level. My husband usually goes for the tri-tip or hot corn beef sandwich, both are fantastic. The build your own salads are huge with lots and lots of topping choices.
