I'm surprised I've never reviewed this place. I come here all the time for breakfast, and sometimes for lunch. Their egg dishes are uniformly excellent, also excellent sandwiches. They have some interesting Italian food on the menu but I'm not sure I've ever had it because I always go for salad or sandwich. They also make great espresso. Friend: I'm just searching for my soulmate, you know? Me: meh. I'm just looking for someone who can mildly tolerate cats and will watch my stuff when I have to use the bathroom at a coffee shop... but good luck to you on your journey. I don't need a soulmate, I need someone who'll help with the litter boxes and let me bask in the glory of being comfortable with the monster I've become... and if they want to take me out to eat every once in a while they wouldn't get any guff from me. I could test strangers to see if they'll try to steal my ish when I ask them to watch over it. Maybe even throw in some creeper bait like a notebook clearly labeled, 'Cootie's Super Secret Diary - DO NOT READ!' (Cootie will be mission alias... obvi can't give away my real name) and see if they snoop or steal. If they remain loyal, maybe I'll buy 'em an Italian sodie pop or one of Fiero Caffe's $7 mimosas (only if they had to actively ward off possible faux diary poachers) and strike up a conversation to test the water regarding their feelings towards cats... because you gotta be proactive about meeting the person of your dreams, right? Or at least that's what I've gathered from the unsolicited advice people keep trying to give me. This was only my first visit of many hopeful future visits because it seems like a great place to scout for potential 'watch my stuff' partners and also because they serve vegetarian lasagna. Actually, now that I've reminded myself about the lasagna I couldn't care less about finding a partner or my stuff getting stolen. Who needs stuff when you've got lasagna? Certainly not me or Garfield. If you really want to know more about this Caffe you should just go there now, check it out, and stop being so dependent on my opinion of the joint. Not that I'm wrong, but if you've already read this far something tells me you've got a lot of time on your hands and you can afford to take some minutes out of your day to drive on over here and chill out in one of their 3 very different seating areas/rooms with a perfect latte and probably some lasagna because you're only human. Speaking of perfect lattes... I can attest to that statement from experience. Filippo (the super Italian owner who also happens to have a lovely singing voice) made me one mean cup of caffeine... so good, in fact, that I went back for more. Only my second time at bat I got an iced tea because a few hours had passed and the sun was at its peak and I get real sweaty real fast so the IT was like my cooldown. It was also perfect and it wasn't nasty jasmine tea like so many places in the Bay Area give you when you just want a straight up regular, non-baby Tylenol tasting tea. Inside is bright with light and warmth from the windows. There's one room that's kind of like a reading nook area, perfect for a small book club gathering, interview, coffee with a friend, or eating lasagna by yourself. The main coffee shop area is a bit more masculine with a long bar for coffee, beer, wine, italian specialty sodas, etc. There's a small variety of baked goods and a well defined menu featuring just a few items for breakfast, lunch, and beyond. I'm not sure how early is too early to order the lasagna but I'll make a mental note to find out the next time I'm in. And then there's a third room area that's got a mega comfy couch, some great study area type table, and an adorable high-top that overlooks a little garden-y creek down below. It's adorable and a really nurturing environment for working alone on your laptop and eating lasagna. Go. Eat lasagna. Drink some coffee. Wash it down with more lasagna. Listen to Filippo sing songs in Italian while making more caffeinated beverages. read more

The staff seem like a family who work hard and don't give attitude. You order at the register and they bring it to your table and bus it. The menu is simple but satisfying. The kitchen is small but open and clean. Their decor is cute and Pinteresty but not overdone and functional. I appreciate it when the staff doesn't have phones in their pocket and are constantly checking under the counter. A variety of people come here and you can tell they are regulars. So first to confirm: Yes, the guy behind the counter is super cheery. That alone will wake you up. Who needs coffee! Coffee is very good. It's dark roast. Bold and fiery! Croissant was fresh and crispy. Delicious. Space is welcoming and split into multiple rooms so you can find a nice place to sit. Here is where my expectations were off. Menu is really limited. I was looking for a small breakfast. There were only 5 choices on the breakfast menu. All were omelettes. There were also cookies and other Danishes. There have been a number of cafes in this location, but it's new incarnation is very special. The new owner, Filippo, is a very warm personality and a fine barista as well. Filippo is from Italy and the cafe is a bit of a hang-out for European folk passing by or folks wanting to practice their Italian. Coffee is imported and excellent. Panini and omelette are available, but I have not yet tried the food extensively, since the kitchen doesn't get cranking until 9 am. The space is light airy spacious and completely redone. It is a calm and spacious alternative to the mob scene at the big coffee chains. Street parking is always available on the west side of El Camino, right in front. Perfect weekend spot. Absolutely adorable, and the food was delicious. The portions were good, but not overwhelming, and the food was pretty light. The cafe itself is really cute with several rooms to eat in and lots of natural light. We sat on a little bar overlooking an overgrown canal outside. Small menu, but there is pretty good variety (and they serve omelettes all day). Turkey pesto panini was great, with a lightly dressed salad on the side. Salmon omelette was LOADED with salmon. And the coffee was good and strong too! The owner (I think he was anyway) was really active in making sure everyone was taken care of. My wife and I came here for a quick bite one mid morning. The place seems like a hang out for people that want to grab a solid bite to eat and enjoy some WIFI capabilities. For me it was very obvious for who the owner was because he seemed pretty stressed out that morning because when we went to order it felt like we were in a no-huddle offense in the red-zone, the sad part about this is when we arrived there was no one in line... I had a Sicilian Omelet and an Americano. The omelet was fine just lacked any flavor or spices other than the fresh veggies inside of it. The Americano tasted as they normally do. The cafe is airy, bright and sunny, with a few loosely separated rooms. The coffee is good, and the panini are great. The vegetarian panini was fresh, with flavorful goat cheese, and rich tomatoes. The plating is incredible-- each panini comes with a fresh salad, livened with shaved melon wrapped around cheese, and a cherry tomato cut in the shape of a flower. One of the worst experience of a cafe. Careless staff - we had a bakery order for the kid and apparently they sold it to next set of customer and said they could not serve as they were sold out . It was just there when we ordered - there best answer take something else or refund. I would have appreciated if they had come across and told us before we had to go asking where is our order before we learnt about this. The staff initial was casual till the owner / manager stepped in - they do not care either for the customer or customer service. Hmmm. Lots of great reviews. Owner friendly? Nope! Not at all, not even a "hi". But he did cheer up with one or two customers he knew. Maybe to people he likes or too early, or......? coffee? Ok, nothing special folks, and for someone who has an industrial espresso machine at home and been to coffee bars in Italy, it almost tastes watered down like when I run out of grinds and reuse the last pull (it ain't Italian illy). The ambiance? Pretty awesome for the area though parking could prove to be challenging but what isn't in down town San Mateo. Will give it another try and if 'grump' is still grumpy then it's not random, and we won't be back. Free 5 MHz wifi. 4 for now, hope it becomes a 5. Pretty pricey. I actually stopped into the Fiero Caffe before their Yelp page opened up, and was so surprised and impressed that I told the owner that he needed to set up the page specifically so that I could give him a five-star review. No joke, that's how good it was. I've only been here for lunch, and so far I've gotten a pastrami/mozzarella/mushroom panini, and a salmon & goat cheese omelette. They were both *amazing*. Not only that, the presentation is very classy, with salad or fresh fruit on the side, respectively. It takes a bit longer than you would get at, say, a typical fast food joint, but that's because it's being cooked from scratch right then and there. And it's worth both the wait and the price (and, to be fair, the price isn't even that high to begin with). The best part of the place, though, is the owner: a kind and charming man who gives you a real sense of Italian hospitality. Each time I came in, he made me feel like he truly valued my being there, and that kind of enthusiasm works it's way into the other elements of the place. The actual cafe is quaint and quiet. Due to the way the place is set up, it seems a bit of a better fit for couples or smaller groups. If you needed to do work, you could probably stay in here for hours comfortably; there's even a section in the back that seems to be made for folks who are looking for an even quieter spot. Colors are bright, friendly, and inviting. I had come here on a lark when I saw the grand opening sign, but it was an impressive showing in the time I went there. If they keep up the quality and passion they have for what they're doing, I can easily see this place becoming one of my regular lunchtime haunts. read more

Sweet, sunny place within walking distance of downtown San Mateo. I had the salmon omelette and a cup of hot chocolate and both of them were delightful. My date and I sat in the back near the window that overlooks the creek and saw some frolicking ducks splashing around in the water. It's a little busier and louder towards the front, but quite enough for a good conversation towards the back. The servers were kind and polite. My date said that his cappuccino was quite good.
