Disappointed and Misled -- Never Again I recently visited Eye and Coffee Guy (formerly "$50 Eye Guy") for an eye exam because my insurance covers the exam with just a $10 copay. To my surprise, I was charged an outrageous $143 for the exam, with insurance. My insurance also includes a $250 allowance toward any frames, but I was told by the sales associate that this didn't apply to frames in the glass case (such as Oakley, Tom Ford, Coach, etc.). That is completely false. I ended up using my own frames and was charged $568 for just the lenses. After insurance, I still had to pay $170 out of pocket -- just for lenses with anti-glare. I needed the glasses urgently, so I paid it, but I absolutely regret it. On August 1st, I placed my order and gave them my $500 Tom Ford frames to have the lenses fitted. Instead of handling them carefully, they broke my frames during the process. Not only did they fail to apologize, but I was told over the phone that I would need to purchase another set of frames because they were not liable for frame damage per the paperwork I signed. When I asked about a credit or refund since they broke my frames, they refused. I then asked for a refund on the lenses so I could take my business elsewhere, but they told me the lenses were already cut and nonrefundable. To make matters worse, if I bought new frames, the lenses would need to be remade anyway. At that point, I ordered new frames from another store, choosing not to give Eye and Coffee Guy another dime. Twenty-five days later, my glasses finally arrived -- far too long for something so basic. Horrible and slow service from start to finish. For comparison, I later went to another local optometrist who immediately told me that my $250 insurance frame allowance was still valid since I hadn't used it. I was able to use it toward a pair of Dolce & Gabbana frames with no problem. The competitor quoted me $125 out of pocket for lenses with anti-glare, anti-scratch, and UV protection -- all made in-house and ready the same day. Meanwhile, Eye and Coffee Guy quoted $399 for the same lens features and still had to send them off. Even with insurance, I paid more here than I would have paid in full elsewhere without insurance. I feel completely misled, taken advantage of, and frankly, ripped off. The lack of transparency, the misinformation, the refusal to take accountability, and the careless handling of my expensive frames is unacceptable. I will never return for optical services again. To top it off, I've been a loyal coffee customer here 4 times a week. But after this experience, I will no longer be giving this business a single dollar for coffee or anything else. The only thing close to $50 here is the coffee and muffins. Do better. read more

The ladies working with us were very nice but other than that I have never purchased any eye glasses with worse lenses than I did at the 50 CENT Eye Glass store on Davis Hwy, Pensacola Fl! - I made sure to only clean our 4 pair's of glasses lens with the proper cleaning solution and cloth. It was impossible to clean them! Next thing I knew there were a million scratches on them! Mine and my wifes sunglasses only lasted two years before mine broke three times and my wifes tint started coming off of hers. I paid a total of around $750 cash for 4 pair's. Never again! read more

Cons: BEWARE OF MISLEADING "SALE" PRICES. I paid too much. As I was browsing frames, one of the staff came over to see if I needed help. I told him I had VSP insurance, and he never said that SALE PRICES DON'T COUNT IF YOU HAVE INSURANCE. I spent over an hour picking out frames that were on sale to ensure that my insurance would cover it. Not until he gave me the total at the end, and I questioned it, did he say they're "required" to submit the full price to insurance. I asked what if I paid out-of-pocket for the frames? He said I'd pay a few dollars less by going through insurance. What I didn't consider was that if I'd paid for the frames myself, I could have submitted and been reimbursed for almost the full cost. I overspent by at least $60. Alternatively, I might have picked a full-price frame (I saw several I liked and put back) and never realized the con. I was told that anything insurance didn't cover, I would not be responsible for paying. So, the $50 Eye Guy charges me almost the full sale price AND gets reimbursed by the insurance company for what they cover, doubling what they make on those frames, rather than being honest and billing insurance for the sale price. When I contacted VSP to ask if they had any "requirement" about full price vs. sale price, they told me that Eye Guy @ Underground is an out-of-network provider, something else store staff never mentioned. They could also do better on communication. The text they sent that the glasses were ready gave store hours but no days of operation, and they have different hours on Saturday than weekdays. Google pulls coffee shop hours from their website. No one answers the phone and there's no voice mail message on Sunday. Pros: It was easy to get a same-day appointment. The staff *seemed nice. It's the first time I've ever ordered a pair of glasses for computer distance and not had to send the lenses back to be recut because they were done as reading glasses. read more

Didn't get a $50 pair of glasses -- even with vision insurance, had to pay $320 out of pocket, ouch! -- so the name of the business is misleading, but I did get an eye exam, and I found a pair of glasses I like. The staff was nice and helpful but took an excessive amount of time, as they all got involved in servicing a man and his son -- whose eye exam appt was 30 minutes after mine, by the way. Maybe they were local celebrities or something, or maybe it was because they were spending more money than me...don't know, don't care, just glad to be done with it for another couple of years. read more

Not only did they not notify me when my glasses were ready so I could pay the remaining balance and pick them up. When I reached out they said that I would have to choose another frame. I could not find a frame that fits my face since I have a chubby face. They will not reimburse me for the money I've already paid due to their inability to inform their customers and this is the second time of them doing this to me. Now I no longer want to have service with them and all they can say is the money is on my account with them and can be used with purchasing another pair. I called them ahead of time, we just moved to area so i wanted to make sure they took my insurance. I confirmed they are in network . they charged me $125 for an eye exam . Then said they are out of network when bill came up my copay is supposed to be $10. i had even said i don't want to make appointment unless i know y'all are in network. I was originally very excited to get an appointment and reevaluate my prescription due to problems i've had with others in the past. the initial intake was fine, nothing special. i choose to get two pairs of glasses as well as contacts. it has been 8 days and there is still no word on when my glasses will be ready. this wouldn't be a problem if they were honest with me about the turn around. they originally told me less than 1 week. i called the other day and they assured me the glasses would be ready by the next day and to expect a call. now i can't get anyone to answer the phone and when i call a different location to be transferred, they drop the call immediately. I recently put a review on here about the 50 dollar eye guy store on Davis Highway. I have since taken that review down as after talking to the manager Jennifer and also talking to Dr. Grace they made my experience better than the original. I am the type of person who believes in giving people second chances so I'm here to say that I am willing to give them a second chance. I hate that it had to come to this to get satisfaction but I will say that Jennifer and Dr. Grace made it happen. The lenses are poor quality. The edging is visible. Shoddy work. Can't read out of my progressives. They were helpful picking out the frame, but no help in fitting them or understanding your sight issues. Live and learn, I'll never use them again. A thousand dollars down the drain! read more

They were very nice and professional when I called to make my appointment. They were semi busy on arrival and I had to wait til someone acknowledged me, however the rest of the experience was excellent. Very helpful staff with deciding what glasses looked best and trying a new look. On the pricey side but have a great selection. Will definitely be going back. read more

I used a groupon for free eye exam, which was done very well. It also included $150 towards frame and lenses. I have a simple single strength correction. They said the balance for 1 pair would be 49.99 above the $150 allowance. Went across the street to Opti Club and got 2 pair with nice frames for $80 total. read more

The eye examination was the best part of our visit. Great experience, and the price, with the upsell add ons is about the same as Wally World with all the same extras. We had no issues with that part and would use that service again. It brought our eye exam total up from the initial $64 to $116.28 each. They explained that you pay for the entire eye exam up front, then they give you the cost of that basic exam, $64, off the purchase of the eye wear and prescription lenses at check out. Why?, because most people probably end up doing the same thing we did; we took our prescriptions and left after she gave us the jaw dropping total for just my progressive lenses/glasses, we didn't even make it to my husband...The sales rep was not pleased. She went from my BFF to - (raise your eyebrows, now grit your teeth as you force a smile with a look of "OMG, I just stepped in dog poo!") and then quip, "Well....what did you think you were going to spend?" Not $465 after fake discounts when I bought my current glasses at Sams 2 years previous for under $300....We took our scripts and went to Wally World. Even with paying over $50 for my frames and with my husband seperating his script into 2 pairs, one for reading and another for driving, we saved $200 vs. paying commission to a superficial sales person. read more

Bait and switch. Advertise 50 dollar frames but if you have insurance you pay more. They sell a warranty that they will not honor. I bought the warranty and when i tried to have my glasses repaired today they showed me 3 pair of purple frames i could get to replace my frames. When i said i wanted the same type frames i had originally purchased they said they did not order frames for warranty. I had to choose from what they had in store. So when they sold me the warranty they LIED to me. Not sure how you can say it any other way. read more

I'm in the midst of a very annoying experience with this company. I woke up with blurry vision one day and made an appointment to come for an eye exam and additional tests. Nothing unusual on the additional tests. I advised the eye doctor that I couldn't differentiate the letters when selecting/tweaking the lens prescription. I was told to pick the lens that made the blobs look tallest, so I did. Fast forward to the sales piece - after mentioning I was moving in literally days, I was repeatedly assured I could pick up my new glasses on moving day. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the glasses were not ready on moving day. Some weeks later I received the glasses in the mail. I tried wearing them for 2 weeks. I couldn't see with them. I called to let them know I was returning the glasses for a refund. I overnighted the glasses back to them. Next day, they call to find out why I'm returning them. I explain again that I can't see with them. I'm told they have to do steps and they'll get back to me. About 3 weeks later, the glasses are in my mailbox again. I didn't ask for a replacement, I asked for a refund. So I overnighted the glasses again, back to the store. By this point, I'm entering busy season at my job as a tax accountant. I ask my husband to work on getting the refund. They give him the run around, and after hemming, hawing, and generally wasting time for a month or so, they tell him they aren't issuing a refund because we're now outside the 30 day refund window. Busy season ends so I'm back on this now. I wasn't outside the 30 day window, counting from the time I received the glasses to the time they received them back. Now if they're counting from the date I bought them, and not the date I received them, I hope they're ready for a fight. I disclosed I was moving in a matter of days, I was told I could pick up the glasses before then. Lie #1. They didn't use any type of expedited shipping method in getting the glasses to me initially. Or when they returned them without my consent. At this point they have my money (almost $500) and the crappy glasses that don't work. I'm actually questioning whether I needed new glasses. Vision seems to be fine with my old glasses. Maybe their eye doctors are as bad as their customer service. I posted a Google review, and they responded. Their 'apology' was a passive aggressive piece that basically said 'we're sorry you screwed up' when I wasn't even the one at fault. Terrible experience. I hope they get up the motivation to return my last phone call. I'm going to keep posting reviews and filing complaints with regulators until my complaint is resolved. And the resolution isn't going to involve me driving back to Pensacola (6 hours away!) for a replacement. A refund is the only practical solution, and if they hadn't dragged their feet and been stubborn, it would have already happened. read more

Went here a few months ago for eye exam and glasses. Even though my vision was covered under my insurance it was cheaper to use the Groupon deal I had found. Making an appointment was easy. This place is so huge inside and super chic, I absolutely loved the decor and the arrangement of the eyeglasses. They have sections for high end designers, children, men, women, and sunglasses - so it's easy to browse. I was seen quickly. Instead of dilation they had a new device that took pictures of your eye and would show all the vessels and everything for the doctor to see. Then I had a short time to browse before being called into the doctor. Being the person that I am (after experiencing the sketchiness of America's best) I researched the doctor credentials- he was legit. He was very nice, my visit wasn't rushed, he explained everything about the retinal scan, then he proceeded with another eye exam and then vision test. The whole process thus far was very detailed. After my exam I was free to roam to find my pairs. I didn't feel rushed, the women were very helpful in assisting me with choosing a pair. I ended up getting a pair of eyeglasses and sunglasses. The cool thing about this place is the glasses are created there as far as gradient and prescription lenses, there's a little workshop next to the checkout counter. Checkout was simple and within the week I had both pairs of glasses and I love them. I highly recommend this place and now they have more locations. read more

Couple things: 1. It took them over 45 minutes to even acknowledge me. I stood at the desk, signed in, and ended up grabbing a clipboard and filling out the info on my own. I finally was able to flag someone down and it was the doctor... she was EXTREMELY nice. 2. The Doctor was incredible. ZERO issues with my exam. I told her budget was an issue, and she worked with the best option. 3. I used a Groupon. DO NOT DO THIS! The bill was not explained to me AT ALL. I was supposed to have $150 toward a pair of glasses. The frames were $50, they charged me for "drilling" $40, and the single vision lenses were $100 EACH! Seriously... single vision lenses for $200?! In what universe? I should have just walked out, but they rush you through it so quickly and swipe your card. 4... and this is the WORST part... they asked if I had my phone, had me pull up my Google acct, took it and clicked on the $50 eye guys website and had me FILL OUT THE REVIEW IN FRONT OF HER?!! I was so taken aback that I did. I went back and left a second, updated review... which OF COURSE they haven't posted. I won't be back. Again... the doctor was incredible, I feel like I had a great exam, and I ultimately LOVE the glasses I got. I just believe it was false advertising with the Groupon, absolutely RIDICULOUS prices, customer service was zilch, and the worst part was making me fill out the review in front of her. read more

I went to both locations on Davis. The big main location to have my eye exam and pick out frames for my new eyeglasses. Steven was very helpful and patient and took his time with me. The rest of the staff were also very accommodating & friendly. Dr. Star, she is awesome. The glasses came in and good quality; however they did not work for me style wise & my husband & friends weren't fond of them either. I went in to the coffeehouse location after wearing them for wk & half and they stood by their 30 day restyle policy and let me pick out new frames at this location- no questions asked. They had some different styles and I found one that both my husband & I love. And yes I'm getting compliments on this pair so I know it was a good choice! Haley helped me at the coffeehouse location and she's a sweetheart!! I'm a happy customer!! read more

Promised me glasses on 14th never got a text or call have proof to show that. Call on 18th and they say they have them after 2.5 weeks

I have been trying to order contacts through them for months and even when I do get someone on the line they say someone will call me back or they transfer me to a never ending ring. I moved out of state so I can't just go there and I shouldn't have to pay for an exam somewhere else when I already had one! If I could give a negative 5 I would. Once thet have your money, they will never return your phone calls. I think all the positive reviews have to either be employees or someone that is being paid off by the company. STAY AWAY FROM THIS TERRIBLE COMPANY. Price I paid was outlandish. Yea....Yea I know. I should have shopped around. And I paid for this mistake big time. Sure the frames are 50 dollars...but the lenses are approx $179 each for progressive lenses. Do your self a favor....go to Stanton....because once you purchase from this company they never answer the phone. I have been trying to contact this company for two months and it is fruitless. Ok , I don't how this business got so many great reviews, cause my experience was nowhere near what ive read from other so called customers. I went to switch from glasses to contacts and from the time I walked in to the time I left the building I was wondering around confused as to where to go or what to do next cause you will not get individual attention at this business. They only care about mass selling. I was rushed from room to room and after being fitted for contacts , I wasn't re-examined to make sure they fit, this is a big no no in my book considering I was wearing progressive lens for the first time. If I misspelled anything it's because this lens aren't the right ones for reading and text is blurry, something g that should have been checked before I left. Now I have to wait a week to , and they didn't even schedule an appointment for that , why? Cause they won't make money off me , that's why. So, I was rushed , the sales people were too busy yammering to be bothered with me and helping with glasses. It took the assistant two times to bring any attention to me once I had glasses picked out. I spent almost 200 just on the exam and fitting for contacts, thanks for the .25 free case that comes with that btw. The glasses I picked out cost me $600 !! Yes I know progressive lens are progressively expensive, but Come on. Yeah , so my experience was horrible can't imagine yours would be any better. Save you money and time , mostly money , go to Walmart! I'd love to proread my review, but I can't , the words are blurry. That alone should be all you need to know of this business. read more

I stopped by to get some information on a new pair of glasses, and the consultant seemed bothered. No smile, short responses, just unfriendly. I was able to get an appointment that met my schedule quickly and easily. The staff were friendly,helpful, knowledgeable, and efficient. For the first time in years I feel like I can really see, my glasses are awesome. My prescriptions for the last several years have not been quite right these are great I could even read the numbers on a sim card! I haven't seen anything that small in years. Also, the guy who adjusts glasses when you pick them up took his time and went the extra mile to make them fit not just get them so-so and push you out the door. The service we received was awesome. The staff was personal and friendly. They had a great selection to choose from as well as having the largest inventory in the surrounding area. My son broke his glasses, therefore leaving him in a desperate situation. No fear, $50 eye guy to the rescue. His lenses needed to be shipped which took 7-10 business days, however they would not leave us in a stranded. They provided a loaner until his arrives. I'm sold and you will be to. read more
