Excellent lunch with my son. Came by this outdoor mall on each of these past two weekend days. We were in town for his water polo tournament. The service, the food and the prices are all high. But so is the quality. The beef tallow fries and homemade sauces were amazing. One of the best burgers I've had in a long time. All farm to table. Strong iced tea too. My wife and I were HUGE fans of Chef David Pratt's former restaurant Brick in San Clemente and were sad to see it go. We've been waiting to try his new Mexican inspired restaurant called Finca in the newly opened River Street Marketplace in San Juan Capistrano. We've never been to River Street before and decided to go check it out on a Saturday afternoon around 4:00. Wow is this place cool....and very busy. Whoever the developer hired to design and plan the layout and architecture of the marketplace deserves a bonus. They nailed it. Although some of the stores haven't opened yet, it was still packed with people and tons of young kids. They had a 3 person musical group belting out some old school tunes and literally dozens of kids playing in the common space that includes a grass lawn area with plenty of outdoor seating. We tried to get into Finca but it was super busy and we didn't have the time this night to sit and enjoy an early dinner. I did stroll through though and found the restaurant to be very comfortable with an excellent vibe. Next time we go back, I'll ask to be seated on the large outdoor patio overlooking the common area. The menu is innovative and extensive. And by the way, if you enjoy top notch tequila and mescal, this place should be on the top of your "to go" list. I peeked at some of the food that was coming out of the kitchen and it looked absolutely delicious. Chef David and his team cook over open flames and the smell of burning hardwood is in the air. Cooking highly elevated dishes using this cooking method requires a bunch of talent as well as a tolerance for heat. I even saw custom made pans with holes in them that sit directly on the flames/embers. This is the first time I have ever reviewed a restaurant that I haven't eaten at yet but wanted to share my initial thoughts and some pictures. Beautiful restaurant, love the location and ambience and concept. Wood fired grill, semi outdoor seating, nice decor with a kind of elevated gaucho estate type feel. Everything is set up well for a lovely meal until the food comes, which was unfortunately extremely disappointing. Came with a relatively large group and got to try a variety of things including several burgers (bison and beef), steak, squash blossoms, sides (carrots and fries), and salads (wedge salad). The wedge salad was worse than airline salads. The carrots were burnt into oblivion - wood fire is an amazing potential flavor kiss to a nice dish but not if it's charred into burnt bitter carbon. The meat patties in the burgers were oddly formed and just had this unusual texture that somehow was both overcooked and undercooked, and unfortunately just overall the food was extremely bland (bad seasoning, bad texture). Lots of great potential but just really poor execution from Finca unfortunately. Maybe it will improve. Service was lovely! read more

First time at this restaurant and The Rodeo. We arrived around 715 or so. The outside was full and the inside spot 75% full. We were able to get a table inside although the temperature was rather warm on the first day of the season. Kind of a cool rustic vibe going on there's a small bar, but it's not one. You can actually sit at. Service was friendly although a little slow. We were still appreciative however. We opted to share a little gem Caesar salad, Finca burger and a side of fries. Keep in mind that the entrees do not come with any type of side, so those are all extra. It makes for a quite expensive burger. Everything did taste delicious. It was enough for us to share. The only thing we did not like was the pineapple dipping sauce with the fries. The herby ranch was extraordinary. We probably would return and try other items. The outside patio looks fun to sit at it but it does face the grassy area that at the time we dined, was running rampant with small screaming children. So if that's not your vibe, you may want to dine inside. Now for Parking, there is a paid lot, which will cost you two dollars for four hours. Getting out is a little tricky because the credit card processing takes a few minutes so be patient with the person in front. Personally they should do away with this money grab. Also if you're wearing very thin, high heeled shoes, you might want to be careful because the parking lot is a packed gravel surface. read more

Just opened 3 days ago. In the new Riverplace Marketplace. I think everything is cooked in a wood fired grill/oven. Lot of veggie dishes and high end burgers. Might be my new favorite restaurant in south OC. If I had to describe with in two words it would be CREATIVE and FRESH. They pay great attention to little details. The non alcoholic patio cooler had a small piece of pineapple in it but it was grilled and had a smokey hint to it. The farm lemonade has fresh fruit puree with a thin slice of candied lemon. Me tried 4 veggie dishes. All so good. Smoked eggplant was on a large fresh cracker of wheat and rye cooked in the open fire. Topped with smoked Japanese eggplant and a myriad of other small touches. So good. My favorite may have been the broccolini. Fresh grilled with nuts grilled tomatoes and chimichurri. The maiz was really good too. A fresh polenta. The squash was well executed but I'm not the biggest squash fan. The fresh corn tortillas and mole it comes it were excellent. Portion sizes are pretty good. The burgers and sandwiches looked good.... Will have to come back soon and try everything else. Prices are definitely a little on the higher side but definitely worth it. My only concern is that when the riverplace marketplace is fully open there will not be enough parking.... read more

Great place especially if you like that bbq smokehouse flavor but with a very date friendly atmosphere. The bison with the fig jam was excellent and the ricotta was a great touch. The ricotta made the burger really come together because it neutralized the sweet fig jam. The fries tastes like they were in a air fryer they were so crispy and seasoned with chives. The 3 sauces served with the bowls of fries are gourmet ketchup,ranch*,and pineapple ketchup. The ranch has some horseradish flavor that gave me tarter sauce vibes which I loved. The pineapple ketchup was a pallet shocker! It was like a brown tomatillo mixed with sweet pineapple. And can't forget the grilled sweet chili carrots with the beets sauces. I never tried smoked carrots and man in hooked. Overall I'm excited to go back and try other menu items. read more

The ambiance and service were great, but highly dissatisfied with a menu item! If you just love wedge salads as we do, DO NOT order from this place! Their "so called" ranch dressing had no taste at all, and was more like a mayonnaise concoction. The bacon was super thick, rubbery and not cooked crispy - more like chunks of meat. Two of us sent ours back and the third, who ate a small portion of theirs got sick. Their prices are high ($13 for a side of fries that p.s. - do not come with a costly hamburger). Finally made it down to Finca. At first you might be turned off by the prices of a hamburger, $24 with no sides. But this is one of those amazing "everything from scratch all you need is the burger" burger. Totally worth it. Got a vegetable to share which was a roasted acorn squash with balsamic vinegar, burrata and hazelnuts. My burger had Kahlua pork, grilled pineapple, caramelized onions, Hawaiian ketchup... I don't eat bread and they were very accommodating regarding allergies. Just look through the pictures. Wood fire cooked everything. In one of the pictures is a whole fish being charred. A completely open kitchen means you can watch them make everything! Service was outstanding. The host, the server, everyone came by to make sure everything was perfect. read more

We tried Finca for the first time on Friday night. We loved the pretty patio we were seated on, and everything we ordered was delicious. We split the grilled artichoke, butternut squash tacos with homemade blue corn tortillas, the field greens salad, and a Three Star burger (which was amazing.) The service was great as well. I believe our server's name was Amanda. The general manager, Birch, was also really helpful. I accidentally left some new clothes I had purchased in the shopping center before dinner at the table. Birch saw them and said he tried to catch up with me, but I was already gone. I was so grateful when I called the next day and he had put them aside for me. This was my first time trying this restaurant in Rodeo, and it was amazing. I stopped by on a weekday for lunch and left with a full, happy belly. What stood out was the fresh, made-to-order dishes. Everything feels prepared to order with top-quality ingredients. The chef offers an authentic Mexican and Spanish-inspired menu, so you can taste the care in every dish. Highly recommend Zucchini blossom tempura, Light, crisp, and full of flavor. For cocktails try the Tepache Punch is refreshing and well-balanced. I swapped mezcal for tequila (not a mezcal person), and it worked nicely with the food. The sandwiches are good for sharing as an appetizer, and there are plenty of options to suit different tastes. Kid-friendly option since they don't have a dedicated kids menu is the quesadillas with handmade tortillas are a solid choice for little ones. The beef tallow fries deserve a shout out!! I usually skip thick-cut fries bc they normally have no flavor but these were rich & irresistible esp with the house condiments!! We walked in on a Friday around 5 p.m. and were seated right away, but I can absolutely see why this place builds a line! Also phenomenal wine section if you're a wine lover they have some super unique finds! I got an orange Sauvignon Blanc that paired perfectly with my burger. Had a great first experience at Finca tonight! The whole menu looked pretty good and we liked most of what we ordered! I loved the farm lemonade, although I wish it was a little less sweet, but it was still very tasty. The French fries were great, there wasn't anything special or different about them but they were still very good. For my main, I got the summer salad (I can't remember the exact name and can't find it on the menu posted to their website) which was really good but smaller than I thought it would be. We also got the green beans which I did not realize had chorizo so I didn't eat those (That's my bad for missing that in the description, I don't eat meat) but my family reported them to be pretty average. Besides the menu, the restaurant itself was very cute and all of the staff that we interacted with were very friendly! Very impressed with the quality and flavor everything we ordered. The grilled artichoke was phenomenal and the Caesar salad was one of the best I've had in San Juan Capistrano. Next time I'll be trying the steak and a few more of their mixed drinks. We were there on a Saturday and really enjoyed the ambiance. This was such a disappointment. Where to begin: we arrived and put our name on the list for Sunday dinner at 5:30pn, told it would be a 40 minute wait. They texted when it was time and we were seated outside on the patio. They do not have high chairs. They do not have booster seats. They do not have a kids menu. Like do they not care about clientele? Because River Street Marketplace is geared towards families with plenty of open spaces for the kids to play. The seats are cold, hard metal that aren't especially comfortable. The heater overhead was not strong enough so it was freezing. Slow service. Waitress was not very friendly and possibly because we had two toddlers. N ordered the margarita and switched the mezcal to blanco. We ordered the broccolini to start. I am giving two stars because this was excellent . The char on the stalks, the pesto and lemon were balanced and delightful. If only the rest of the meal had been like this... The French fries were soggy. Thick cut and came with three homemade sauces. My kids love ketchup and they said theirs was "icky." It did appear quite runny and liquidy. N ordered the 3 star burger. It was bland. He didn't think it was good. The mushroom was overpowering and the pickle had an odd taste. His was cooked medium but unevenly cooked. I ordered the finca burger to share with the kids. We asked for the tomato on the side and no mustard or onion since it was for kids etc. I asked for the side of bacon so I would enjoy. It was delivered raw and extremely undercooked. The cow was still mooing because the meat was squishy and raw. Besides the unacceptable cook on a burger, (seriously I don't think it is safe for kids to eat a raw burger) the beef was ground on the coarse chunky side and just not formed together. It easily fell apart. I sent it back and had them refire 3/4 of the burger. 1/4 of the burger I had cut to check the cook and initially give to my child before I saw the cook so they could not fire that piece easily. They did cook it up to a medium so it was at least edible without getting food poisoning but it was unremarkable. The pepper was overpowering and such a disappointing taste after waiting so long for food. They forgot the bacon. When we pointed that out the waiter said sorry but didn't try or offer to fix it. Really good food and amazing atmosphere. Very open with high ceilings and a great vibe. I have to laugh at all the folks that are bitching about it not being kid friendly. This is an adult restaurant with an adult menu. Take your kids to bad to the bone or somewhere else. The drinks are super unique and well thought out. We had the Heirloom beans , comes with fresh roasted over fire sourdough bread and it was excellent. Incredible flavor. Also had the Broccolini... the balsamic really made the dish stand out And we had the 3 star burger. One of the best burgers I've had in OC. All their food is cooked over an open fire. Theres a lot of passion that goes into the food here. Service was too notch as well from the moment we checked in. This place is jamming all day . Put your name in and walk around the area. The Three Stars Burger was excellent with lean patty and full of goodness of farmers mushrooms, cheese, onion, fig jam tucked in a brioche-milk bun. Another excellent choice we shared was the Heirloom Beans. Healthy and bursting with fresh herbs and vegetables. The dish came with two grilled sourdough bread to scoop up the flavorful broth.
