I tried the seafood boil tonight. My first indication that it was not going to be legit was that it was not in a boil bag but a styrofoam container I was so disappointed. It was a tasteless hard potatoes mess. The egg was not seasoned with the rest of the boil. I specifically asked for crab legs (which is an up charge). How is crab an up charge. But they did not add to my order I was excited when I saw clam, but they were chewy. I did call and spoke with someone who said she was "the manager" who did say I could come back and get something else but why would I? The hubs and I had a nice time at Fins last night for his birthday! I'm so happy Fins is enjoying a soft opening and did not sustain any damage in the EF 1 tornado on 12/28/24, although the beautiful historic pecan tree adjacent to their building was uprooted (sigh!). The restaurant was very clean, the staff were extremely accommodating and helpful, and the food was served quickly! Our server was Amanda, and she was friendly, ensured she got answers to our questions and was really kind! Hubs and I split a half dozen oysters on the half shell which were really good! They were served with lemon quarters, saltines (out of their wrappers), horseradish sauce (light on the horseradish), and a really delightful Mignonette sauce! I was busy taking photographs and hubs ordered the Mahi Mahi tacos for each of us. The French fries were delicious! Amanda was kind to ask for and bring us some ketchup. Again - great fries! Hubs really enjoyed the Mahi tacos!!! I did not like them. I expected a flaky, flavorful white fish and this tasted like seasoned overcooked chicken slices reminiscent of Budding's deli meats. Relooking at the menu they don't offer a chicken taco. Anyway, the avocado slices were fresh and good, although I scraped off some white sprinkles that were all over the tacos and I'm not sure what they were. A happy birthday boy was my main concern for this outing, and I look forward to returning to Fins UP! There's a lot of potential here with the bright open space, nice music and cute bar/seafood display area! Not to mention motivated kind staff willing to get questions answered and happy to serve! A couple of suggestions I have is: 1. top off all your salt/pepper shakers that are on each table. This is simple side work and should be part of each shift's closing/opening processes. It indicates apathy when I see half filled salt/pepper shakers. 2. use your pre-shift "tag-up" meetings to inform your staff about the types of oysters you are serving. There's a big difference between describing oysters as "Gulf Coast" versus "Murder Point Oysters" that are raised in baskets in the open waters of the bay, just west of Bayou La Batre, AL and are available year-round or serving "Sweet Jesus Oysters" that are grown in Hog Neck Creek, that offer a buttery flavor with celery notes and are available year-round. I make this distinction because if Fins UP were to serve either of these oysters, I would be beyond excited because it is rare to see them in north AL restaurants and serving them would set them apart! 3. sell some merch! The "get shucked" t-shirts would be fun to buy! I have one from a Palm Bay, FL restaurant at which I dined. I look forward to a glass of wine (when they get their liquor license, which I assume they will since "Bar" is in their name) and a half dozen Murder Points or Sweet Jesus' soon! read more

Reading the other reviews while I'm waiting for my Blackened Mahi Mahi. My wife's Pistachio Salmon arrived over 20 minutes ago. She's trying to slow-walk it, but I told her to eat before it gets cold. The salmon is tasty but undercooked. A different waitress just came by and apologized, said she's going to "fix the check". We'll see. She took the salmon back to the kitchen. Like someone else said, we were excited to find a new place and were looking forward to something new and different. Food is not here yet. Got the Mahi Mahi, it's tasty. Large serving of mashed potatoes, seasoned on the outside, bland inside. Vegetables so-so. Salmon returned, cooked well, but with mashed potatoes instead of rice. The price was adjusted and they gave us a slice of pie to go. The problems seem to be communication and training, and that's on the owners. Shame. read more

I watched a guy do a review, I was in the area and decided to try the Blackened Mahi Mahi, was supposed to be on a bed of charred corn chutney, Avocado lime sauce and creamy garlic Mashed potatoes...the picture above is what I got, no flavor, really overcooked mixed vegetables, the potatoes were luke warm...a real disappointment. I ask to try the fish & chips...the fries were nothing special, baked frozen...the fish was good...my daughter got the Rasta Pasta, it was the best out of all three dishes... Stopped by for a late lunch on Saturday. It's a nice venue a block off the square. Loved the staff including the owner, his wife and son. All great people. Our waitress was great. Really friendly and on top of things. We ordered the shrimp appetizer, the fish and chips, and the jerk pork chop. The shrimp was really tasty and shrimp were large. The fish and chips were nicely breaded and cooked well. (And a large portion) The pork chop was moist and nicely seasoned. (They also have jerk chicken.) All in all a good meal. Brand new restaurant in Athens that is still in its soft opening period. I've been three times since the tornado hit downtown. The food is fantastic!! They are still working things out, but I highly recommend them. Tonight Claire was our server and she was fantastic too! She let us know the progress of our meal. They make everything to order so it might take a bit longer than some people like, but it is well worth the wait! Grand opening is soon and I will be back! read more

Klaire was an awesome server, and the food was delicious. It can be stressful to go out to eat when you have life-threatening allergies, so I really appreciated that they went the extra mile to be sure my food was safe to eat. First time at Fins beach bar & grill and will probably be the last time. Service from the time we sat down was lacking. We asked for a high chair and eventually had to go find one ourselves. Our servers were nonexistent until our food came out. We had ordered char-grilled oysters as an appetizer and when our entrees showed up the server was confused when questioned on where the oysters were. Food overall was halfway decent. Tried this place in Athens AL. We like to give support to local restaurants, but this was a failure. Now I love seafood, and I have eaten at my seafood places. Here is the bad part, it is the worse hands down I have ever had in 40 years. Better off getting fast food seafood. There are some great places in Athens, just not this place. I wanted to like it so much more. We were a party of 5. First tried to order two different types of drinks only to be told they didn't have them. Ok. We put in an order of the conch fritters and were told they didn't have them anymore, even though they are listed on the menu. They practically just opened and already don't have items listed on their menu? Ok. No problem. We ordered the pork belly bao and the pork belly mojo (also on the menu). The waitress came back to tell us they didn't have those menu items. Ok. So we ordered the oysters Rockefeller. I've had this dish probably hundreds of times in my life. This was the first worst version yet. They were cold, no crust. The spinach was super wet and mixed with the sauce made it watery and slimy. My mom ordered the mahi mahi. There was no seasoning AT ALL on the fish. Not even salt or pepper. We all kind of made a joke that hers looked sad. My dad ordered the red snapper. He said it was good and it looked good. I ordered the fish and chips. It was good. Not great but good. My husband ordered the tacos and when I asked him if it was good he said "no but I ate them because I was starving and I wasn't going to try and order something else. They probably wouldn't have it anyway." Ha. For my daughter we attempted to order the fish sticks. We were told they didn't have them. We ordered her the Mac and cheese and it was kid food. What you expect. By the time it was the end of the meal, we didn't even want to hear about the desserts especially because our waitress began to tell us what they didn't have. The other issue we had was although our waitress was super nice, she kept trying to take our plates when we weren't finished. We even laughed and said we needed to physically hold our plates when she came around because she would snag it before you finished. Also, oddly stingy with napkins. We ordered extra napkins and got one. We ordered extra napkins again and got only one again. It was all a very odd experience. Had a great bruch my two boys. The service and food was really good. Only real complaint I would have, is that I thought all the dishes offered were specialty dishes, and didn't have simple items to order. Wow! We enjoyed every morsel. We started with Cajun oysters followed up by a crab cake sandwich. It was delicious. As we left my husband joked that he would be fine eating there everyday. We are looking forward to returning and trying everything on the menu! read more
