The end of the month came rolling and I realized that my car's registration was due. Oops. I checked the notice and realized that my smog was due, too. DOUBLE OOPS. I realized that I had two options: ignore it and hope that the police don't pull me over or find somewhere to get my car smogged and then spend the afternoon in the lovely DMV. (Which, as most people know, is the 4th level of hell.) To top it off, I'd be going with a with a small child in tow. (Which, as parents and other people who deal with small children know, is akin to about the 8th or 9th level of hell.) Seeing that I'm a responsible adult, I decided to go with the second option, despite the levels of hell. *sigh* So off to Yelp I went, looking for local smog places. At the last place I had my car smogged, I waited for nearly an hour and was NOT eager to repeat that experience, especially with a preschooler. I called ahead and was told I could make an appointment but didn't need one. I dropped by and was served right away. After parking your car and leaving it with the guy that does the smog test, you go inside to wait and do some paperwork. The fee is comparable to other smog checking places in the area. They offer a discount too -- visit the website for the coupon. When I was there, they told me that I didn't need to print it out and gave me the discount for mentioning it. The waiting room is small and isn't particularly well lit. Not the cleanest place but nor is it filthy. (This place is an auto service after all so what can you expect?) On the upside, the waiting room has cable and plenty of chairs. There was Keurig coffee, water and soda to choose from. There's also a few firetrucks for the kids to play with. My daughter kept herself occupied with the toys the entire time. That alone was worth the visit. The entire visit took less than half an hour. I opted to get my tags at the same time too. It was an extra fee but worth it to me since I didn't want to drive around with expired tags. They're a DMV business partner so if you need to register your vehicle or transfer ownership, they can do it. Sure beats waiting in line!! Definitely worth the visit. read more

I was short on time, money and having a busy day. Stopped in Fire House Smog, gave them my DMV paperwork and keys. They took my car, I made myself a cup of coffee and sat down to watch Dr. Phil. As i pull up Paul comes right as i was stepping out the door and welcomed me w a big smile. I asked for a smog and he immediately asked me for my dmv paperwork and if i had my coupon. He then took my keys and directed my son and I to the waiting area. Waiting room was nice and well maintained. They had a tv, a table filled with magazines/books and books for kids also, some firetrucks for kids to play with, a Keriug machine, water and a lil refrigerator that had soda inside for the customers. Paul was very welcoming and offered me something to drink. I already knew i was going to be well taken care of. Long story short, Paul sincerely explained that there was something wrong with my exhaust b/c the machine wouldnt read anything to be able to start the test. So he gave me a list of local shops i can go to get it fixed. About an hour after i left i get a call back from Paul apologizing that he may have made a mistake that it was their machine that was broken. He offered to give my smog for free if i came back. He was such a professional i didnt hesitate to come back and the fact that my smog was going to be comped for. Overall, Paul is a great worker/owner. I've had numerous visis to Fire House Smog and every one has been a fantastic experience. Their shop and waiting room is clean with a good layout. They offer coffee, tea and even cold soda while you wait and the LCD TV helps pass the time. Being an old Firehouse, they have an old uniform up on the wall along with information and pictures showing the history of the building. Since they are a licensed partner of DMV, you can take care of your registration after your car passes smog. There is a $20 service fee, so I use AAA personally but it is an option if you need it. Dominic gets 5 stars but the weekend staff suck so bad I have to deduct a star. I hope the owner reads this. I have pulled into a bay on a weekend at three times in the past 5 months and it's a ghost town. At least twice I pulled in because there was no workers in the bays, no cars, but the bays were open. It was late enough in the evening I thought it might be after business hours so I pulled in to investigate. My mother had personally dealt with the owner in the past in rectifying an accidental double charge and because he was so nice and customer service oriented we went out of our way to check in on his business because things looked suspicious. We wanted to make sure someone hadn't broke in. It was really peculiar that both bays were open, no one to greet customers pulling up, no one keeping an eye on the garage equipment, no one coming out when cars pull up, nothing. The first time I waited a good 5 minutes assessing things before I got out and ventured inside. Then next time I waited closer to 15 minutes. No one ever comes out. I went for a retest on a weekend and same thing...no one. They're inside eating some kind of Asian food, chit chatting, and hanging out. It's unbelievable really. On the weekdays, Dominic is always in the bays, even if it's empty. He's quick to greet you and always pleasant. He even apologized to me for the weekend staff. This guy is the saving grace of Firehouse Smog. He's so helpful in helping you understand what the smog results are saying and what they're telling you needs to be done. He is why I continue to come here. This man cares about his job and his customers like he is the owner, yet he's not. A+ Dominic! To the owner: please replace your weekend staff. Thanks. read more

Super fast -- I booked a Saturday appointment online, arrived 15 minutes early and was out before my appointed time even started. The waiting room is full of things to do for adults and children alike, and very clean. Came in and was able to ask these folks a question about smog and pricing, no games no gimmicks, I decided to give them my business. I had to wait for a replacement part to come in to pass inspection, I brought it back to them and they did the free retest. They were fast both times, courteous and professional. Not only was it a good value, but it was excellent service. And on a blistering hot day, both times, their air-conditioned waiting room was a nice cool cave, a very welcome shelter from the heat. With toys for the kids to play with, excellent literature to peruse, local area history books and fire station history on the wall, no one got too bored in the short time we were there. I pulled up and a technician was working on a truck. I parked in front of the "car" section and my husband went in to pay. There was no one in the office except for the customer currently getting his truck smogged. So he comes back out and we sat in my car for about 15 minutes without even an acknowledgment from the tech. A gentleman pulled up about 10 minutes after me and gets serviced first? Went to Fire House Smog for my civic and my experience was great. The process was fast and easy. The employee Mac was hospitable and offered the customers in the waiting area beverages. Mac was pleasant to speak to and actually found out we have things in common. The business is taking precautions during this covid19 pandemic which is nice to know. I observed the smog technician washing his hands which seemed like after every car. I could be wrong but I did notice the gentleman washing his hands a few times. The also had hand sanitizer readily available. While I was there I noticed they showed the same courtesy too the two other customers waiting. The also a service where you can get your registration sticker once your vehicle has passed. From my past experience from other shops they didn't offer this. Maybe it's something new but it is convenient that you get the sticker on the spot and registration dues paid.
