Oh how the greats fall. About 10 years ago, when Fire Wings started popping up, it was legit one of the best wing spots around. Unfortunately, its time at the top was short lived. Year after year the quality and service declined, and eventually I stopped going. I rarely order delivery, but wings sounded good and Fire Wings is the closest to me, so I gave it another shot for old times sake. I have dined in at the midtown location before and it's fine, fast casual and usually busy late night. Today, I ordered the 10 wing combo with plain fries. Hot take, but I've never liked their seasoned fries. They always feel overcooked and oily to me. I got mango habanero and lemon pepper, added five extra fire wings, and an extra ranch. The total would've been $38, but I had a $10 off coupon, so it came out to $28 before tip. Still expensive, but that's delivery pricing these days, not really the restaurant's fault. What is their fault is the size of these wings. Look at the photos, they were like toothpicks. I used to love Fire Wings because they served good quality wings with a lot meat on them. These had to have had less than an ounce of meat each. And it wasn't just a few of them, like 80% of the order was undersized. I honestly feel like they might have set aside a bunch of small wings for delivery orders, because the last time I dined in they were not this ridiculously small. The fries were whatever, basically standard frozen fries. I do remember that they used to give a ton of seasoned fries back in the day, but it looks like they also skimp on fries as well these days. The ranch was just okay, nothing special. The mango habanero was solid, one of my favorite wing flavors. Lemon pepper was just okay. And the fire flavor, which is supposed to be spicier than regular buffalo, tasted exactly like regular buffalo. This will be the last time I give Fire Wings my business. I have to accept they just aren't what they used to be. At this point I'd honestly take Wingstop over them for bigger wings and better sides. This place is very centrally located and has really good deals. $0.85/boneless wing on Tuesday and $0.95/bone-in wing on Wednesday. This review is for take-out/pick up from the Midtown Fire Wings. I'll start off my saying that Fire Wings is probably more of a dine-in experience if you want the best experience. That may have been our first mistake, but you'd think wings and fries would make a short 10 minute drive in to-go containers ok and still be delicious. We ordered 40 wings (20 buffalo and 20 curry for $46) along with a five piece chicken tenders ($10.50), large fry ($3.90) and large tater tots ($5.10) along with some extra dips ($.50/each). The ordering went through DoorDash and my husband picked it up himself at the designated time and brought it straight home. Pick up was easy and he was back home in a flash. I was super hungry after working all day and at that point I wanted to eat anything and everything so I went straight for the tater tots and was immediately disappointed. They weren't crispy or soggy or even hot... it was almost like they were just a bit undercooked and under seasoned. A bit of a cardboard consistency is the best way I can explain it. Just slightly warm and underwhelming. Luckily I had honey mustard to dip them in but they were not what I expected from tater tots. The fries were ordered plain and were slightly more crispy but definitely needed dip or seasoning because they were plain, plain. This is a preference, but we ordered 40 wings and 38/40 were drums. Some people like the drums the best, but I prefer flats. I'll still eat drums but I was surprised that there wasn't more of a 50/50 mix or even 30/70 mix of both. The Buffalo wings were fine and not overly sauced, so they weren't soggy after the drive home. The Curry wings are typically my favorite, but seemed under seasoned this visit. I'm used to being hit in the tastebuds with the delicious curry seasoning flavor they use and this was more like a light sprinkle. The chicken tenders were also fine, they had a nice crispy breading on them but were average and a bit on the smaller side. This was the first time I ever tried Fire Wings as take out, so I'm wondering if it was an off night, if they're not a good take out food or if this location just isn't up to the other experiences I've had at different locations. Came here for wings and a beer, and was very disappointed. The wings were not good. The skin was soggy, and the chicken was flavorless; they were just drowned in the sauce. I got all flats, and two of the ten wings were so small I didn't even eat them. The fries were also flavorless even though I ordered them with seasoning. The bathroom had no soap, so I asked the staff if I could use the sink behind the counter. They let me but the sink, soap dispenser, and paper towel dispenser, all looked like they had never been cleaned. My wife and I have been fond of this Fire Wings since they opened 4 or so years ago! The location cannot be beat, located at the intersection of Q and 15th St in DT/MT Sacramento. Fire Wings is walking distance from our apartment (when the weather is nice), but when it's cold AF we drive (lol). Just be aware that there's no parking lot or anything so you'll have to find a spot on the street nearby. Our go-to order at Fire Wings remains the same: 20-piece meal, all bone-in wings (boneless wings are just chicken nuggets lol). For flavors we get 7 lemon pepper, 7 garlic parmesan, and 6 mango habanero. The meal also includes seasoned fries, carrot sticks, and two sides of ranch for dipping! We find that the 20-piece meal is plenty of food for two people. As far as ambiance and service are concerned, I've never eaten IN this establishment. We always get our food via takeout. Besides a time or two, staff are extremely friendly and whip food out quickly! There are giant TVs and a bar at this location, so those who do dine-in could get a fun experience during a Kings or 49ers game. Overall, these chicken wings are consistently 'very good.' They're not the best I've had but I still vastly enjoy them. They're crispy, reasonably sized, and flavorful. Fire Wings' french fries are always delicious as well. The only downside is the size of the wings that you'll get, sometimes it's a bit too small which tends to be more dry. Because they typically add too much Buffalo sauce I order "light" buffalo and extra cheese with a side of ranch. Good fries, too. My only complaint is that the wings are not quite as huge / meaty as some of the other wing joints, but that's probably because they are using chickens that aren't pumped full of hormones to plump up. Boy do we have a love/hate relationship with this restaurant/location. It's the closest place to get late night food within walking distance which is why we keep coming back. We have never eaten at another fire wings. This review is specifically geared towards the 15th Street location. The garlic noodles CAN be amazing! Sometimes they come with tons of fresh garlic, while other times you cannot tell there is garlic included. The heavy garlic days are the best. We love adding a bit of peanut sauce to them to get that extra yummy flavor. Our go to for sandwiches is the Nashville which is the most consistent experience next to the wings. However, we have been dealing with many burnt sandwiches lately. The macaroni and cheese side has 100% of the time ( we're talking dozens) been cold. What the heck Fire Wings? Try to get this right. Hot dishes should be received HOT! We have to microwave each time. I recognize that a somewhat new chain will have some growing pains but the absolute most important thing to me is consistency of flavor/taste. Mac and cheese should always be hot ( warm at very least) Noodles should have the same amount of garlic each time. Sandwiches should be cooked without being burned ALL of the time.
