Bawk has great fried chicken buckets and sandwiches. Parking can be a little challenging at times with the hustle and bustle of many busy neighboring R Street businesses. You order at the counter and they'll give you a number for your table and bring your order to you as soon as it's ready. Some people aren't a fan of this concept since they are essentially asking you to tip ahead. It doesn't bother me, but I figured I'd bring it up so people are aware. We opted for the bucket of fried chicken with sides. We chose the corn bread, mac and cheese, red beans and rice and a side salad. My wife loved the corn bread. The mac and cheese was great and was cheesy and creamy and had some nicely browned cheesy bites which I love. The red beans and rice had little chunks of meat and a great flavor profile; however it was a little watery for my liking. The salad was crisp and fresh. The fried chicken was nice and crunchy and juicy. I would've liked a little more herbs and spices in the batter, but it was tasty nonetheless. Next time I'll probably try a sandwich and definitely won't forget to grab more of the delicious mac and cheese. There's a cool speakeasy, The Roost in the back. Oddly enough I've walked in this establishment to visit the speakeasy and only now tried the food. Interesting entrance experience. You enter and are greeted by a few tables on the right and a host table but that's for speakeasy and not for Bawk. Go left and head to the bar corner. It's counter star so you order first, get handed a number, you seat yourself and grab your own water, utensils and to-go containers. Simple and easy process. Shoutout to happy hour. I ordered the fish sandwich, waffle fries, and a pitcher of beer. Fish sandwich - I still ask myself why I ordered a fish sandwich knowing it's a chicken spot but to my surprise it was really good. The fish was perfectly coated with breadcrumbs that added to each bite into the soft, kind of melt on your mouth, fish. Not sure what sauce they used but it was just enough, not overpowering, and didn't make the experience messy. The slaw/veg was just enough. Only gripe is that I wish the fish filled up the bun as there were some bites without fish. Waffle fries - a healthy amount. Fresh out the fryer, pipping hot. Delicious I may or may not have had it multiple times (3x) since the first time for lunch. I got the chicken sandwich with hot honey and Cajun sauce. The fries 'chefs kiss' You can tell it's made fresh and the staff are so nice and accommodating we ordered the Mac n cheese and we're given a little more, I guess we got lucky. This is my new go-to chicken spot in town. The chicken was so flavorful and juicy. I went with the 3-piece chicken with dark meat and honey hot for the spice level. There was a perfect balance between spice and sweetness. The Mac and cheese was nice and creamy and the red beans and rice were some of the best I've had in a long time. I was pleasantly surprised that a local friend had me meet him at Bawk!, which is equal parts Urban Roots taproom and chicken joint. It's in a fun area of town filled with younger skewed bars and concert venues. The bar feels old but modern at the same time. We sat at the bar, my friends had cocktails but I stuck to some new beers for me that I had missed at the main brewery. The bartender was extra friendly with us during our visit. I've been to Bawk! Twice now with friends. Both times I got the oysters. Thursday they were only $2.5! So of course I got myself 12 oysters. They're a good and the mignonette was wonderful. I highly recommend their oysters. My friend had the Mac and cheese and said it was great. They also tried the fried chicken sando and fries. They liked it but thought the sandwich was too wet unfortunately. It made it hard to eat, but the flavor was good. I would definitely come back though. The service is friendly and fast. read more

I'm hooked! Was having a drink at a bar next door and someone said they were going to get chicken next door at Bawk! I had never heard of it and asked them to bring me some. I got a 10 piece maple hot order of party wings - ALL FLATS- of course, because what other way is there to eat chicken wings!!! Duh!!! :-) Upon first bite they were delicious! First of all they were hot and fresh and if you know me, you know that's important ! They were Fried to perfection, seasoned all the way through and had just the right amount of maple syrup balanced out with spicy heat. I'm so disappointed! I used to be a regular at Bawk 3.5 years ago. Their red beans & rice were my favorite. They were seasoned perfectly, but they changed the menu and took it off the menu. I went back for the first time in years and was excited they had red beans & rice back on the menu. I was so excited I ordered TWO! Well baby...they can take it off the menu again because it was not what it used to be. They certainly aren't cooked by the previous chef because these had ZERO flavor or seasoning. There was some kind of ground beef or meat mixed in, that I wasn't expecting and a whole bunch of green onions. I got the 2-piece fried fish & was equally disappointing. Super greasy and lacked flavor and seasoning. I should've known something was wrong when I was there at 4pm on a Friday, during Happy Hour, and it was a ghost town. Also, when I walked in, there was a couple standing at the register, reading menus and there was a woman who clearly worked there in the middle of the restaurant sweeping for several minutes. No one greeted me when I came in. I assumed someone had already acknowledged the couple and maybe they were in the back. But after standing there for several minutes and looking around, the woman sweeping finally acknowledged the couple and began taking their order. I know darn well, she saw us standing there. "No thank you," I'm marking this place off my list of "go to's." It's a shame because it's right around the corner from my house. read more

Bawk! is a great option for a casual spot with great food. There's street parking in the area and they offer indoor and outdoor seating. When you head in you can grab a spot at the bar if you're drinking or order and pay at the front counter and then find a seat. The menu has gone through changes over the seasons and years, but they always have their chicken strips, Bawk bites, and chicken and waffles. They have other great dinner and brunch options, but the items and recipes change. On our most recent visit we were so excited to see the shrimp and grits ($23) back on the menu, but it no longer has the poached egg, corn or additional meat with the shrimp. It was still good but the version we had previously was better. We also had Bawk bites ($12) and chicken strips Bawk Basket with 5 tenders ($28) and both were delicious, as always. Their blue cheese is delicious. I also ended up trying the sweet tea ($5) and while it was a nice refreshing tea, I don't think I'd order it again. It didn't match up with some of my other southern sweet tea experiences. The team here was very friendly and they also helped up grab boxes and took our empty plates right away when we were finished. I met up with some girlfriends I hadn't seen in months, so it was the perfect place to catch up, hang out, and share a bunch of food. We ended up sitting there for hours just talking and laughing, and it never once felt like we were being rushed, which I really appreciated. The food was solid and perfect for sharing. We ordered the mac and cheese, oysters, and fried cauliflower. The mac and cheese was creamy, rich, and total comfort food (the kind you keep taking "one more bite" of until you're absolutely uncomfortable). The oysters were fresh and a nice lighter option to balance everything out. And the fried cauliflower was honestly a standout. It was crispy, flavorful, and one of those appetizers that disappears way too fast once everyone starts picking at it. Also, the beer selection is huge. If you're into trying different styles or just want options, you'll be very happy here. It's the same great quality you'd expect from Urban Roots, just in a more casual, food-forward setup. Get the sandwich, and know what you're getting with the cornbread Second visit, and BAWK! has held up. The first time I came for the fried chicken sandwich and the fried cauliflower, and the breading is what sold me. It stays crisp instead of going soft under the sauce, and it has actual seasoning in it rather than just crunch. Last night we went bigger and split the BAWK bucket across three sauces. Hot honey, Nashville hot, and garlic parmesan. The garlic parmesan surprised me. There's more going on in it than the name suggests, savory and layered instead of the flat cheese powder version you usually get. The chicken itself is well fried across the board, though some of the pieces in the bucket ran light on meat for the size of the breading. Side salads were fresh and did their job. The cornbread is a different story. It's cake, not cornbread, complete with a sweet frosting on top. As dessert it's excellent and we finished it. If you're expecting something to eat alongside the chicken, it isn't that, and I'd love to see a savory version on the menu. The room was louder than I expected when we walked in, enough that we were half shouting for the first few minutes before it settled. Service more than made up for it. Friendly, quick, and my soda never sat empty. They also have a speakeasy that we haven't gotten into yet. That alone is bringing me back. read more

My friend and I were eager to try this place after having visited Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse on a previous trip to Sacramento, so we jumped at the chance when we happened to be in town for a concert. We ordered takeout, as we were pressed for time, and split a cornbread muffin with maple butter and the fried chicken sandwich, which came with garlic herbed mayo, slaw, house pickles, and waffle fries. A noticeable standout for me was how customizable the sandwich was. Not only could we choose the heat level (cannot recommend "maple hot" enough), but we could also choose what kind of chicken we wanted (thigh, breast, etc.), whether we wanted the sandwich cut in half or not, and two sauces to have on the side (honey mustard, BBQ, ranch, ketchup, etc.). When we stopped in to pick up our order, the staff greeted us with big smiles. Our order was already waiting for us, so we got in and out fast! Even though we were only there for a few minutes, we noticed the bathrooms were extremely clean and the interior had a fun industrial vibe. As for the food, the cornbread muffin was delicious as always and the maple butter tasted like a warm, autumn hug. The sandwich was juicy and crispy and the ranch and BBQ sauce were so tasty. I don't think I've ever had a slaw that better complimented a fried chicken sandwich before. My family and I checked out Bawk! last night for dinner for the first time! They offer happy hour from 4-6pm so we ordered the Chicken Wings, Cauli Bites, Loaded Mac and the Kids Chicken Tenders with Fries. The food took a bit longer than I anticipated to come out, but it was all hot when it arrived. I really liked the Cauli Bites -- the batter was nice and crispy and had a hint of spice as well. The Loaded Mac had some good flavors too, but the Chicken Wings were just okay. The Chicken Tenders were actually a pleasant surprise as well. I'm not sure if they make their own hot sauce in house or not, but it mostly just tasted like any bottled one you'd get at the store. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you - which is fine, but when our food was brought to our table, we asked if we could have some silverware and the guy said "yes, they are over there" and had us get our own. I just thought it was weird that they didn't give us some with our food and instead we had to get up and walk across the restaurant to get them ourselves -- water is also a self-serve thing too. Staff was fine, nothing stood out. They only come over and ask if they can clear your plates. The inside is split into 2 rooms with booths on one side and the bar area with shared tables on the other - it's definitely has a dive bar feel to it as well. The Roost speakeasy is also located inside as well - which I highly recommend!
