Used to go here when it was Cheers, was sad to see it go. Then it became Fire Wok with some kind of robot kitchen, both times I tried it was very subpar. Now I find out it converted to the ever popular "build your own" hot pot. Went tonight (Friday) at 7:45pm, completely empty and remained that way until 9pm when we finished eating which was a shame because it was pretty good. The lady that worked the front didn't speak much English which I don't think is good for business but it is what it is. They are having a 12% soft opening promo with free iced tea, hot pot is by the pound at 14.99 per lb. I always manage to get carried away and end up with about 1.8-2lbs lol. I got the tomato base and it was pretty flavorful, most ingredients tasted fresh. The only 2 things that tasted funny was the wide sweet potato noodle and one of the fish balls (not sure which one). The rice has a weird taste to it, but other than that the food is pretty good. My kids liked it. I liked the tofu and orange chicken, kids really liked the beef. I absolutely love malatang, and this place has spicy dry mix which is different from the other malatang places I've been to. It's really good, they also give rice if you get the dry mix and a free drink if you go a certain weight I think. We tried the 6 different dishes. The spices were well balanced. It's not too spicy, but just right. It's not too salty or oily either which we appreciate. Each dish was done well and we can't really find flaws. The rice had some toughness to it but that's most likely from the heat lamp that they use, which could be improved on. The overall flavor is great. For under $11 for two entrees, this is very economical. It's honestly rare to find cheap eats. We understand others may compare it to Panda Express but in our opinion, this is far more authentic in terms of flavor and cooking. It's absolutely a great alternative to Panda Express if you're wanting more authenticity and spice. We understand that they just opened so these things aren't really deal breakers. Just crank up the food warmer and it's perfect. The service here is great too. They're welcoming and explained their dishes. We also got to try them before committing which we liked. So the service type here went from chinese fast food style during soft opening to a build your own hot pot type food service restaurant. If you have experienced that type of restaurants before it is no different. The food was good and service was good as well. There's still a bit of a learning curve for them considering they just opened. You also will have to be a little patience with the server as she spoke barely any english. However, not a deal breaker for us. Quality of food isn't bad. Similar to any frozen pre-packaged type fish cake, fish balls, meatballs, etc. The meat were your usual sliced meat. My wife is gluten-free, so she got the chicken pumpkin broth. For those who's GF hopefully you read this and save you the struggle of asking. I suspect they have other ones that were GF too. We also had orange chicken, chicken curry with potatoes, teriyaki chicken, black pepper beef, and jalapeno pork. Everything was well-flavored and portions were huge and well worth the price.
