We had heard that Happy AYCE had reopened, so we decided to check it out. Walking into the restaurant around 3:10pm, there was 1 party there. After they left, we were the only party there. It wasn't as busy as it used to be to be. After looking at their menu online, we saw that the lunch price ended at 3:30pm, so we got there before that time. When we were there, we were handed a new menu where lunch is from 11:00-3:00pm and dinner from 4:00-11:00pm. We were asked to pay the dinner price, The waiter just said his manager told him to tell everyone that, but the menu doesn't state the price between 3:00-4:00pm. The online menu also needs to be updated. As for the food, the hot food selection has gone downhill. Not as much variety as before. Mostly fried foods, not as much greens as before. The dessert selection was only oranges and a jello dessert. The meat was sliced super thin, so it wasn't chewy. I would say the service was just ok. One waiter was catering to us, but he was also busy doing other things in the kitchen. Would I come back here again, probably not. Not the first time but very satisfied for our most recent visit here. It's been a while since we last ate here and we had family dinner as a party of 10, so we were given a private room with 3 hot pots. We had beef, lamb, and pork slices for hotpot which we ordered 5 each per order. We had two pots original and one spicy. The meat slices were very thin so cooking time wasn't long and we paired it with various sauces, so if you make a good sauce it'll be even better. The buffet selection definitely changed, there's more hot foods and they no longer have mini sausages. I do enjoy their char siu and their varieties. Staff were pretty attentive with making sure our tables are cleared and if we need more meat. Since we were in a private room, they still came by to check on us. The service was pretty good. They brought us the meats and soup base pretty quickly. Just do yourself a favor and stick with the Hot Pot..rookie mistake of getting the $5 additional dim sum. All and all, the restaurant was overstimulating with the lights and the music. I couldn't really think so I was pretty uncomfortable. What I did like was the no waste policy: if they pack up your leftovers, it's an extra $5 with the portion of that money going to a food bank organization. I went to pick up the food, and the parking was very easy - it was lunch time and I found easy street parking right in front. I walked in and the ambiance is fun. My family came to San Jose to visit, and we were hoping to end the night with a fun dinner together, but instead, we left feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. We arrived around 11:00 PM, knowing the restaurant closed at midnight. We understood that it was late and were respectful of the closing time. However, around 11:28 PM, the servers began rushing us by bringing the bill to the table and repeatedly pushing it toward my girlfriend. We also noticed the servers giving us dirty looks and watching us in a way that made several members of my family uncomfortable. The food itself was also disappointing. The broth was very bland, and there were VERY few vegetables available because many of the options had already been put away. For the price, we expected much better quality and selection. Honestly, I would have rather gone to Denny's. I work in the restaurant industry myself, and one of the most important things I've learned is that regardless of how long customers take, they should always be treated with patience and respect, especially while the restaurant is still open. What made the situation feel even more uncomfortable was that there was another party of about seven customers who appeared to be Asian. We noticed that they were not being rushed or watched in the same way we were. My family is Mexican, and while I cannot say what the servers' intentions were, the difference in how we felt we were being treated was noticeable and made us uncomfortable. I also noticed that the restaurant currently has a B health grade displayed. After our experience, I can understand why I would have concerns about the restaurant's overall standards and management. What happened here? The food quality is way down and prices are up considerably. Happy AYCE used to be one of my go-to places for great value hot pot, but I can't recommend it anymore following my previous visit. It doesn't help that they were shut down by the health inspector due to a cockroach infestation in December. We got inside and nobody was at the front. We waited for 10 minutes and had to go inside to get someone to get us seated. At least our server was nice and understood our frustrations. She genuinely seemed like she was trying her best despite the restaurant being busy and understaffed. It was difficult to get a server to take our orders for more meat and the food came out slowly. Also, the plates were dirty we had to ask for replacements multiple times. Seems like they haven't improved on their cleanliness. The self serve bar is a shadow of what it used to be. They removed many food options and replaced them with ramen noodles. Veggie options were also replaced with cheaper alternatives like lettuce and spinach. The soda machine was out of a few sodas at one point and I'm not sure if or when it was refilled. Happy AYCE Hot Pot has become Sad AYCE Hot Pot now. Cleanliness is definitely a recurring issue and I don't trust that they've made the steps to fix it. We got the spicy bone marrow and the black truffle mushroom broth. Both were pretty tasty. We stuck with the beef, lamb, and pork for meats. I was pretty satisfied with the quality. Pair this with the selection of veggies (spinach, watercress, bok choy) and I'd say it's all you need. Since it was my first time, I did have to try the Chinese buffet trays. Most of the items are just okay, but the chicken wings, although a bit oily, was super juicy inside. I could do without it next time though. They did have seafood but I'm pretty skeptical of seafood in these situations so I decided to skip it. We also decided to try the dimsum but as everyone else says, it's only 3 items. They said it'll take 20 mins but after like 40 mins we realized they forgot our order. We reordered it and it came out in 15 min but it was just so-so. The extra wait made it feel worse. When I came here for the first time a while back near the grand opening, everything was wonderful. This time, I had the most horrifying dining experience. The meats were so old- extremely chewy and dried down to the plate which they were served on- and the vegetables were all wilted. We just left while the health inspector was checking the food, and it was apparent that things weren't going well judging from the looks on everyone's faces. We even overheard a table (who seemed to be bosses or business friends) dining alone on the left side of the restaurant speaking to employees in cantonese, instructing them to move all the bad vegetables onto their table so that the health inspector wouldn't see it. The original broth didn't help much either -- it had a strong herbal aroma (probably ginseng or something similar, i took a photo) that completely dominated the flavor. I tried adjusting it with condiments, but every sauce had its own overpowering, pungent note. Even the chili oil -- usually the hero when all else fails -- couldn't save it, since the oil had the same lingering fried scent you'd find on their french fries and fritters from the buffet. The meats were another letdown -- they tasted gamey (especially on the fats), and even the lamb wasn't lean. The dim sum buffet, though only an extra $5, didn't add much value either. The tofu skin had a weird leathery, paper-like texture, the chocolate fountain was overly sweet, the soybean milk was also pungent, and even the soda station are Pepsi instead of Coke. The plates weren't all that clean for the buffet that was an and miss and they were still wet. I also paid $5 extra for the all you can eat dip sum which was basically the worst thing. First it takes 20 min for the order to come out and your expecting fresh made dim sum. Not the case, I feel like it takes that long so you'd fill up on the buffet before it arrives. It was the most pathetic dim sum I ever had, the other reviewer were right on when they said it was horrible. First the selection is very small. The shrimp har gow filling a shrimp paste filling. The soup dumpling was dry as it can be. The shu Mai was decent not great. All the dim sum felt like left over reheated that they didn't sell the night before, really bad worse then frozen stuff. If you plan to go avoid it like the plague. The so call black sesame custard bun, was just standard white bun with grainy cream yolk. False menu item. I appreciated them for clarifying the pricing. There is a parking lot with minimal spaces. We parked on the street. This place is good for groups. Since we drove all the way there, we decided to stay and try the basic tier A hot pot. My daughter and I did the half-half soup base since she likes her spicy. As we went to pick out our food for our hot pot, we learned that the hot food bar was included! SCORE! The choices for noodles was awesome, udon, ramen, and vermicelli. The sauce bar was great! They had more choices than other places. There were also some dessert choices. This was our go to spot for Hot pot but Not Anymore! The quality went down so bad, the soup base spicy marrow broth tasted extremely weird- we couldn't continue eating it! The mushroom and squid tasted weird. The squid had what seemed to be spines . The smell, taste , and consistency was very weird and concerning . Even the kitchen smelled really weird when I had to pass by on my way to the restroom . The selection was very minimal. The many times I've been here on a weekend- there was always a wait time but this time around it was pretty empty for a Saturday Night compared to what it was before. Had dinner here a while back, and while the value and food was ok, the experience left a lot to be desired in terms of hygiene! We ordered several beef and pork plates for our meat, and the portions were small with ok quality. (it is AYCE though, so you could just order more plates) They also have a cooked food and sauce bar, but everything was kind of mixed together when I looked. It can also be hard to get around in the space since it is small for the amount of tables they have. What really bothered me was that most of our dishes were being put on our windowsill, and it had a thick, visible layer of dust. Every time the dishes were picked up by our server, chunks of that dust would fly onto our table, into the dishes, and near our pot. Service was quick and parking was difficult, but I can't really get over the dust thing, which did really ruin the experience for me. Happy Hot Pot serves a mix of buffet food with some hot pot. They have limited soup bases and meat selections- lamb, beef, chicken and pork belly. The broth is on the salty side. I tried the regular bone marrow and spicy bone marrow. The spicy one is very oily! The meat cuts are fatty and I would have liked a leaner beef option. The lamb was alright, not too fatty. There is a self serve station for fish, quail eggs, veggies, ear wood mushroom, taro, tofu, etc. I was surprised that they did not carry fish balls and a variety of mushrooms that are very typical at other hot pot places. They have a meal limit of 90 minutes and it comes with a fountain drink. Their water needs better filtering. Customer service was lacking and there are flies circling the self-serve station. Everyone receives a bib and they measure your kid's height for charging purposes There was an entire station of fried food and Chinese food, such as fried rice, noodles, tofu, eggplant, and other stir fry, oily dishes. Came with family on Saturday. Like before, food is very good. Staff are very attentive. They removed empty plates as soon as the saw them on the table. For a buffet style restaurant, this is excellent service. Although the restaurant was crowded, it wasn't noisy. For Chinese buffet, restaurant is quite clean and organized. First time I came it was a great experience, so I went back. Just finished eating this place, my boyfriend and I decided to get dim sum only, no hot pot because it was too hot. So we ordered one round, and waited for our food since we understood it took 20 mins. We went to the food bar, and grabbed a few things it was mediocre. But some dried out from the light. When the lady came with our dim sum I asked to make sure the price, she said it's 24.99 per person because their prices are little over the place and did want to make sure it was 24.99 since we wanted dim sum only, just to be aware it was hot pot price and plus 5.00 for dim sum if added for dim sum. As we waited to get our 2nd round, we waited probably 35 mins or so, no one has shown up to our table. The dim sum we ordered, we only ordered only 5 plates (our first round), and we never got into our 2nd round because we waited for awhile and we didn't want to wait another 20 mins for it. So another lady came but to a different table, we wanted to ask for our check, she yelled at us "ONE SECOND" in this very rude voice. That's when I had it. I got it going towards the cashier, and she came back was like "you wanted this?!" Pulls out our tab. She told us 65 something I asked why can I get an itemized. Because I was only aware 24.99 per person and there was 2 of us. And saw the hot pot plus dim sum. I told her we didn't have hot pot. As you can see at our table. Immediately talks in Chinese. (Which I wish I could talk to them back because I do speak Chinese because they said rude things before we left) saying explain the tab to them. Other lady who took our order explained. She was reading the line of hot pot plus 5.00 to add dim sum. I said why are we paying that but we didn't have hot pot. She kept arguing with us. And kept showing the menu when clearly said hot pot plus 5.00 to add dim sum. Then I told her, I clearly can read and look at our table we don't have hot pot. after arguing, she only took 5.00 dollars off our table be aware they still took the other extra 5.00 dollar out of me. I'm that person where you give service I'll tip. And I can tip fat. all in all I didn't give her tip. Why? Because there wasn't service, the other lady yelled at us, they argued their prices when clearly they can't admit at fault, we only had one round of dim sum from all you can eat, wanted a second round no one showed up, they don't have half their menu which stated on their menu , I stated that when I didn't tip after she scoffed at me. And told her you guys still took 5.00 so I guess I did tip. Don't want to be that persons but I guess I am ‍ I just really, really hated the experience.
