**DISCLAIMER: THIS IS REALLY LONG BUT WORTH THE READ. Oh let me just tell you about the great experience I did NOT just have at this location. We arrived at around 10:40am -- it says they open at 10:30. We go in there and nothing is ready. They are like just beginning to set up. Don't say open at 10:30 if you can't manage to do so to begin with. The lady at the cashier was clearly a manger of some sort, but not from this location because she knew how nothing worked. Kept asking the staff how they do things. We walked up to place our order, and she asked us to give her a few minutes -- not a problem, I get it sometimes things are slow. However a few minutes turned into almost 15. She was sorting coins in the register....yelling at people in the back to turn off the water, and then asking people how much meat they had left and why they were going to run out. *Side note: don't go there this afternoon, because they are almost out of ham and turkey (not unusual for this location tho because one time they were out of bread)* So we are standing around, giving her the "minute" (15) she asked for, and another customer walks in. He walks over to the line and SHE TAKES HIS ORDER. HELLO! We have been standing around waiting on YOU to help us, but you didn't bother to let us know you were capable of taking our order, so instead you help someone who comes in after us. Normally, that kind of thing isn't a big deal to me, but she had us waiting on HER for 15 minutes. She takes his order, and then is taking ours. She literally wouldn't even let me or my boyfriend finish our orders before she cut in to tell us what comes on it and what don't we want on it with her little spin around display on the counter. Well, if you'd let me actually order, I would be able to answer all those questions without you being rude and interrupting me. So all I wanted on my sandwich was ham, cheese, mayo and deli mustard. Once I said no lettuce, tomato, or onion, she goes, "so just mayo and deli mustard?" And I said, "yes, and cheese!" And very snotty, she responds, "It comes with cheese! It's mixed up with the meat!" Like i was an idiot -- she also was waving her hand around in the air. Sorry, I just wanted to clarify, all she had to say was "Ok, got it!" Instead, she had a nasty attitude that continued for the rest of the time I was there, and I am sure is still continuing. We paid, she asked for a name, I said my name and turned a tad and she said to my boyfriend, with her lovely attitude "I couldn't here her because she turned!" Hello, right here, just say "I didn't get that." I got a drink. The man who ordered before we did as well and was standing at the drink machine that was not in proper setting for us to use. She was literally doing nothing and the man had to raise his hand to get her attention. I was standing behind the man, and instead of going around me with the nastiest tone she said "EXCUSE ME!" No, EXCUSE YOU for not knowing how to run a sandwich shop. She also had on her workout clothes. I'm sorry put on real clothes if you are going to come to work. I don't care who you are, what position, put on an outfit that is appropriate for your title. Because the image she gave off was lazy, inexperienced "manager", who rolled out of bed and thinks it's okay to treat your paying customers like they are beneath you. I guarantee you another manager or owner would never show up dressed like that and then sit there and take orders. We were waiting on our food and she just starts berating the staff for things that were not done last night when the place closed, even tho one guy said he wasn't even there. Can you... "because it wasn't done last night! And at least 10-15 more times. (No joke) "I refilled the soda syrup because it wasn't done last night" Well I got news for you, you did an awful job, I had to pour mine out. Yes, let me sit here with customers in here and be negative over and over because that is how you run a business properly and make your employees want to work harder. Nothing good is going to come out of that and you don't do that in front of customers! I mean COMMON SENSE. Because of this, I went up and asked her to make our food to go because I could not listen to her bitching any longer. And when I asked she had to ask what order because between the three of us who were in there and ordered sandwiches, she couldn't remember. She told the staff to "make sure the lettuce is green." And then when they were making a sandwich said, "no don't use that, take that off!" Okay sick, glad I didn't get any on my sandwich. You have customers in here and you are literally telling us every problem and micromanaging your staff even tho you don't even know how the place works. It's a shame because the food is good, but I cannot put up with that and I will not be back to this location, ever. I really hope they take this into consideration and get rid of her. CJ needs a raise. Straight up. Every time I come in he is always there with a smile and a welcome. He and his team have ruined me for sandwiches. I've tried going to other places and it just never measures up. It's never a situation where the food is done before I'm done ordering, and that just shows they take the time to carefully prep, measure and wrap everything exactly how I order it. As if their slogan "Founded by Firemen" isn't clear enough you'll also see uniforms and helmets displayed prominently on the walls. Why? So that we'll "never forget?" You can't even drink a pepsi without reading story of uncommon valor printed all over it here. So this place is about firemen - Got it? Created by FIREMEN who believe in getting things right the FIRST time, you pathetic slob. In the realm of fast food, the sandwiches are good. My Italian sub was melty, gooey, tangy and overstuffed with sandwichy goodness that had me actually licking my fingers. I was SO excited when I moved into my new place and saw a Firehouse Subs next door. Unfortunately, I'm going on my 5th minute now standing at the register without attention. There are two staff members in the lobby staring at me, but their 'not my job' attitude is shining strong as one of them calls to the kitchen to ask someone to 'get the cash.' By this point there are people in line behind me as well. Finally, someone comes out and I tell him I placed an order for pickup. Without even making eye contact, he points his finger to his side and tells me that it's 'on a rack over there.' Mind you, not only have I never been to this location before, but he's also standing behind a 20-ft bar when he's pointing. How am I supposed to know where my order is? I asked for clarification and he ignored me and called the next guest to the register. I guess this will not be my new go-to Firehouse Subs. Lastly... I did order online for pickup. I did make two requests for my sandwich - no pickle and extra mayo. After being shunned in the store, I was hopeful that at least my favorite sandwich in the whole wide world (the Hook & Ladder) would compensate for everything. Nope... requests denied. Got it. Standard firehouse subs with sub par management. You will wait 30-45 mins for a sub. The location is not the cleanest, but you do get any size drink ya want. The subs are good, as firehouse typically is. They usually get the toppings correct as well. Im a 3 star giver for run of mill standard locations. Timeliness and cleanliness are essential for this location, and they fail at that. Nice staff though, understaffed, but nice. read more

Awesome Hot Sandwiches....the favorites are a Wheat-ball (Meatball on Wheat)...and the Engineer (Hot Turkey, Swiss, Deli Mustard,...)...No Onions...Add Pepperchinis. As a Firehouse first timer, I felt very cramped and rushed when I first walked in. Trying to view the menu I had patrons behind me bumping into me and the cashier trying to hurriedly get me to make my decision. So I did. Without reading the entire menu. As I waited for my sandwich to be made, I got a chance to take a look around the place and size it up. They did a pretty good job of trying to make it look like a firehouse to fit the theme, with the fire engine red everywhere and the dalmatian spotted table tops. I wish they'd have their sandwich makers in fireman uniforms, though. WINK. The place overall just felt cramped and a little dirty. I feel like I should be explaining this better, but I guess that pretty much sums it up. The sandwich? It was pretty good. I had the Smoked Turkey with everything on it, because it was too busy in there to sans anything. If I would have known it would be smothered in mayo and melted cheese I would have made some modifications, but I guess that is what made it so tasty. Pretty darn good for a chain restaurant, and they support firefighters. I prefer our local sandwich shops, Thundercloud and Tucci's are my favorite but when i am not around one of those Firehouse is probably my next go to sub shop. I usually get the hook and ladder or hero, medium, on wheat. The bread is good never stale or hard. I am not sure how they steam the sandwich or if they just steam the meat but the cheese is melted and the meat is warm. I also get the sandwich "fully Involved" which means they put on lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and deli mustard, or course they do have some extras you can add if you want. They also add a pickle spear which i thought was a nice touch. Usually there is a TV or two on the wall with some kind of sports on. For those of you that like spicy they have a huge collections of hot sauces that you can use to put on your sandwich, They also make their own. I have never tried any of the sauces just not a fan of hot sauce on my sandwich. read more

I feel like coming to the defense of Firehouse here. I mean really, this place is way better than Subway, Jimmy Johns and other chain sub places. The steamed meat gives the subs a totally different flavor. Of course Firehouse won't knock your socks off, but they make good , 'different' sub sandwiches. By far the best thing about firehouse is the lineup of hot sauces you can smother your sandwich in. They have the sauces all categorized by intensity and they have about 30 or so choices. For a big chain sub shop, Firehouse is original and tasty. It is different, so if you fear change, run the opposite direction. If you like hot sauce and good subs, walk in and deal with the annoying "Welcome to Firehouse" greeting and get your grub on. Pros: It's different, yummy subs, tons of hot sauces! I'm a sandwich snob. If my sandwich is messy I'm not a happy camper. I went to this place on a quick run during lunch the other day. It was super busy inside. I stared at the menu for a bit, the staff members were eager to help me make a decision and gave lots of good info about which ones they preferred. In the end, I picked one that looked appealing. The sandwich came quick and then I immediately left and took the short, 2 minute drive back to my office to eat at my desk like a hermit. I was hoping to get a quick, satisfying lunch but instead I got a mushy, sauce laden sandwich that looked slapped together by and ogre. No bueno. I like my toppings neatly distributed on the bread and I don't want everything to fall off with every bite I take. I'm sure the people in my office were disgusted by my eating, not because I am a sloppy, mannerless eater but because the sandwich I got was a wreck and difficult to eat politely. Let's start off with the negatives, the set up seems backwards to me. You walk in and make your way past standing customers and crowded tables to the back of the place. You then give your order and walk past the counter to join the others standing waiting for their order. The positives-the meatball sub is simply delicious. Cody, I need my taste buds examined. I've had a Hook and Ladder and an Engineer there, and both were pretty "meh". Not bad sandwiches, but definitely not the best. What really earns the low score from me is their layout. I was excited about this Firehouse opening up because it's right next to my office. I would have been a frequent customer in almost any situation, except the one I experienced on my first visit. You see, they've laid out the restaurant such that you place your order way in the back of the space and then wait for your order by the door. This would be just fine, except they ALSO placed a bunch of tables where the queue forms. So imagine a lunch crowd. When you enter you have to puzzle your way through a bunch of people who are not in line, but waiting for sandwiches. When you do find the end of the line, you're basically standing on top of other people attempting to eat their lunch. It's all-around stupid. I appreciate that they've attempting to provide some sitting space for their customers, so that's good. But this implementation doesn't work. Hopefully they'll just shift around the tables or something to make this place work, but as of now I don't plan on going back. And of course that shopping center is already out of parking space, and only half the businesses are open. Is there some sort of city ordinance dictating that all strip malls should have half the parking they really need? read more

I have never seen a more forlorn group of people behind a sandwich counter. I came during the lunch rush, so the line was understandably long. What was not understandable was how incredibly long it took to get my sandwich while these sad-faced, mid-twenties guys moved at snail pace and called each person's name at a completely inaudible level in the loud, crowded store. To be fair, when the morose sandwich maker finally called my name, he did tack on a completely flat "sorry for the wait ma'am," which I did genuinely appreciate. I grabbed my sandwich to eat at an outdoor table with my book, only to realize they gave me the wrong sandwich. I ordered the Hook and Ladder Light and received the Turkey and Cranberry. Unfortunately, I really hate cranberry spread. The Engineer is one of the best "chain" sandwiches in town and the large is plenty for two meals. What is puzzling about this place is the consistently poor customer service. I mean they suck at it but in their defense they don't seem to be trying. The sandwich maker at least seems to show a pulse but the cashiers I've encountered over the years were invariably cold and lifeless. I noticed in recent visits that they don't even bother yelling out "Welcome to Firehouse" anymore. In fact, they barely acknowledged me. I am going to start off by just saying that is the best meatball sub in the free world and Canada. Just the right amount of spicy, the bread was soft, the cheese was melty. I have had many bland meatball sandwiches in my lifetime and I am happy to say I found the right mix of everything I look for in a meatball sandwich. The Engineer "Fully Involved" was also a really tasty sandwich. I will have that again. Alright lets address a few issues. Going to the back of the shop to order is a little backwards, I agree that it would be more efficient to have the ordering in front. Yes it gets crowded but let's take a look at that. It is a brand new restaurant in an area that is "Starved" for food service. 2 months ago the only thing to eat around there was a bad Chinese restaurant and a Subway with the stupidest employees in North Austin. So here we are, you've been working everyday for six years right down the street and haven't had good food for lunch without driving 10 minutes of course it's going to be packed. It had been well over 5 years since I had been to a Firehouse Subs and that was back when I was living in Houston. I definitely consider myself a sandwich connoisseur of sorts and remember not being too impressed with my initial experience back in the day. I had simply written Firehouse off as an inferior establishment until last night when I finally gave it a second chance. Hearing my father give credit to Firehouse as the best place to go for a hot sub sandwich intrigued me. I was intending on hitting Freebirds for dinner, but saw Firehouse next door and thought I'd try it one more time to see if my perception would change. This was by far the best food decision I had made in a long time! Not only was I impressed by the sandwich, but Kenny (the gentleman working), was incredibly helpful in deciding what would take my taste buds to the next level. It only took one bite of his masterpiece and I knew I had found my new favorite place for a hot sub sandwich. The restaurant as a whole was pristine, the staff was genuinely friendly, the food was excellent and my future business was secured. I can confidently say that my positive experience was in large part due to the fact that you have someone like Kenny working behind the counter. You could see his passion in wanting to change my perception of a previously poor experience. Kenny exceeded my expectations and is in large part the reason why I'm writing this review today. If you're hungry and looking for a place that has a passion for the food they serve and the people that walk through the door, go see Kenny and his team at the Firehouse off Burnet... Yesterday the fiance and I went to Freebirds for lunch and noticed this place. He's had it before, and I haven't (which, ironically was the opposite of Freebirds - we'd get it delivered to the office on crunch time dinners all the time and he'd never tried it), so we returned to the shopping center the next day to check this place out. I was drooling over the smokehouse beef and cheddar but after consulting the nutritional information on the website, I decided to go with a more reasonable turkey on wheat. But kudos to them for having all the nutritional info available on the web. The staff was super friendly, the sandwich came out just as expected, and was the perfect size for me (the medium), but it seemed just a little average. Nothing really memorable about it. A good, solid lunch. My fiance pretty much agreed with me. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing wow. I would have also liked an option to have a side salad or a soup besides chili with my meal instead of just chips. One cool thing is they have a TON of different sauces you can try with your sandwich... being a bunch of hot sauce aficionados, that did make us happy. Though it didn't quite pair up well with the turkey, their hot pepper sauce was yummy. As the other reviewers said, the layout is really weird - go all the way to the back to order and then to the front to pay. My party - Hungry and not a lot of time to waste (and close to work) Place - Firehouse Subs (and we were first timers here) Time - Early evening this past Tuesday First Impressions - Nice clean store - must be good food (cuz it was CROWDED) Reality - The GOOD - The cashier was really nice and knowledgeable - The team worked really well together and got the crowd served (reasonably) quickl - The store has the "new" coke machines with alll the flavors The BAD - The couple of times we looked behind the counter to see the team to be what appeared to us to be confused - A little pricey (for my taste) The MEH - I really wanted a cheesesteak (philly style) but settled for a the brisket an cheese (loaded). The sandwich was small in size (not length) and woulda been tasty if it hadnt been warm/cold (supposed to be a hot sandwich) - but not a great OMG-gotta-come-back-and-bring-my-friends-sandwich - The rest of my party had another hot sandwich that was really enjoyed but not enough to go out of her way get again. Conclusion - Better than Thundercloud (taste/price), but to be honest, if I am spending 15 buckson a meal and a sandwich, I would rather go to Subway for 3 for 12 deal (and that is saying a LOT) or even Schlockztys (and that is saying a WHOLE LOT) read more

I asked if the chicken salad had onions and she says yes so I decide to order the bacon ranch on wheat, no onions. I get my sandwich and it has onions. I take it back to her after only the first bite expecting to get a fresh sandwich and what do they do? They remove the onions and bring me the sandwich. I ask for no onions because I freakin hate onions. I could have removed the onions but I chose not to because sometimes the flavor of the onions stays in the sand which. Customer service aside from the onion removal team swooping in and bringing me back my sandwich was good. Not sure if I would come back though. read more

I'm giving this place 3 stars solely based on service. Service: fast, informative, accurate. Awesome! Sandwich: meh. I got the hook and ladder....it's ok. Nothing worth talking about really. I dont care for the ham as its too sweet, but it tells you that it's 'Virginia honey baked ham' on the menu, so I can't ding points there. Just an FYI though, it is very sweet! They put tons of mayo on my sandwich (I requested no mustard so maybe they doubled up?), the turkey is pretty tasty, I haven't found any cheese yet, and my sub was immediately soggy. Not overly soggy where it's not edible, but very very soggy still, and I'm not entirely sure why. The steamed meat maybe? The steamed meat, for the record, tastes just fine to me, but my husband didn't care for it a bit. He said it took out too much of the flavor. So, we gave the place a try but we probably won't be back. It's not bad, just not very good either. Subway is better, and I'm no fan of subway. The service was very good, though. Nothing wrong with the sandwich, but when you're selling something that national chains are selling (e.g. Subway), you've got to sell it better or at a cheaper price. It should be another one of those dictums in business like "never make the customer wait to pay". Do something new or better or do something else. You can't open a coffee place down the street from Starbucks and hope to make any money without bringing something new to the table, Firehouse didn't do anything to make me come back apart from espouse its love for firefighters. I feel bad giving this place 3 stars when I gave Jimmy John's 4, but the 4 stars for JJs was really all about the ease of ordering and speed of delivery more than for the food. This sub was better than the one I got from JJs. I'd never been in to Firehouse Subs before, and I was looking for something a little different today. The first thing that assaulted me when I walked in the door was the delicious, spicy aroma. Very pleasant and mouth-watering, and makes me wish the sandwich could have lived up to it. I didn't hear anybody yelling a welcome, so perhaps they have discontinued that practice... I agree with many other posters that the layout of the place seemed rather strange to me. I guess you do what you can with a long, narrow space like that, but still... I stood in the big middle of everything (clearly not in line, clearly not waiting to pick up food) and perused the menu. A couple of sandwiches caught my eye, but I opted to get the Italian (without onions). I ordered my food to go, and it was still warm by the time I got back to my office a couple blocks away. It was a tasty and satisfying sandwich, but nothing exciting. Maybe if I'd stayed in the restaurant, and sampled some of the selection of hot sauces, it would have been more memorable. Firehouse Subs We thought we would try Firehouse Subs. I haven't really found a good Sub place since I left Miami. The sad news is that I still haven't. We ordered the Meatball sub because it had such great reviews, and the Turkey Bacon Ranch. First I have to say that the bread was really pretty good and the sauce was pretty good too. The appearance was appetizing too. The real drawback for me was the meatballs. Too much filler not enough meat. My daughter picked off most the meatballs and just ate the bread with a sliver of meatball, she really didn't like the taste of the meatballs. The Turkey Bacon Ranch was ok, just not enough meat. I didn't see where you could add more meat. The price break seems to be sandwich or combo. There isn't really clear signage on what "fully involved" means either. I might go back and try something else sometime if I'm in the mood for a sandwich. read more

I walked in and was excited to try this place out for the first time as its walking distance to my apartment. While we were looking at the menu a cockroach crawled across the counter they were preparing the sandwiches on. I notified the employee and he seemed unconcerned. workers were nice, informative and helpful sweet tea was alright sandwiches were small [i ordered a medium] layout is ridiculous I went in during lunch so I had to deal with "that stand next to people eating while waiting for and talking with my friend about the options." I felt bad for the people we were standing near who already got there food and had a human snake slithering through the tables. I ordered the Italian which was recommended by one of the workers, and got the medium. When our sandwich hit the table we were pretty surprised at the size. It was plenty to eat and all but for 5 over five bucks for the sandwich alone, i guess i expected more. The Italian had ham, fine with me. But as has been said here the ham is really sweet, something i would like usually but not on an Italian. It gave the sandwich a kinda' weird taste. Pepperoni and sweet kinda freaked out my taste bud, in a bad way. The chip selection was weak all the standard crap and a few varieties of vicks. The add on cookie was just so so. I will say the large variety of hot sauces is pretty cool, many of them I have seen but never wanted to buy a whole bottle of. 32 Minutes. It took 32 minutes from the time I ordered and sat down to get my food. I actually didn't even realize, either, until someone who had been sitting down before me went up to the counter to ask where their food was. Then I noticed. I used to come here years ago and it was always pretty consistently good and fast, even at lunch rush. I came after around 2:10, and there were four people behind the counter all, what seemed like, making sandwiches. I guess it was all a clever ruse (We're using ruse now, guys, we're bringing that word back). The food was still good but for that kinda wait I should have just gone to Hopdoddy's. Hopefully things improve and I just went on a weird off day. I'll be back again to see cause I'm nice like that, and will update the review then. .... Because I love sandwiches and I'm a big ole fatty. read more
