We ate at Fire Rock Grille on Dec 6th, 2012 for my Dad's 80th birthday. This was the 4th time I had been to this restaurant, and it will definitely be my last. Enough is enough. Let me start by saying that the night of the 6th was a Thursday. This means that one, it was "Thirsty Thursday", and two, the special was Fish Tacos. Now before you run out to Fire Rock Grille for their Thirsty Thursday and Fish taco night....be warned...Thirsty Thursday consists of only a wine menu. Yep, you heard me right. Wine only. WTH? And for the special, let's just say it's on special because you could smell the scent of fish before you ever entered the restaurant. I mean really, that's the first thing you smell when you walk in....the smell of rotten fish? At one point during our mediocre meal, the table behind me had ordered a fish entree and I could barely breathe let alone eat the rest of my meal. Moving on... Okay the only good thing about the evening is that my dad's entree was free. Other than that, the server was slow and the kitchen was even slower. We had to keep asking to have our drinks refilled and had to wait for about 45 minutes for our dinner. Our server didn't seem to care that we had two school aged kids that needed to get to bed for school the next morning. Finally after waiting for another 20 minute to get our checks, I had to hunt down the server who then acted offended that I had come to the server station to get his attention. There were two separate bills. I had my dad's dinner on our bill and then my sister had her bill for her family. Low and behold, after having the server run my credit card, my sister noticed there was gratuity already added to our bills. Gratuity in the amount of 18%....oh hell no! I got up from our table and went to the host stand to ask to speak to a manager. The hostess, sensing something might be wrong said she'd go get her right away. 7 minutes later, she came back saying she couldn't find her manager. What do you mean you can't find your manager? I then said, well, you better find her because I'm not leaving until I speak with her. When the manager finally showed up (15 minutes later and reeking of weed) I pulled her aside and started to explain that the service we received was in no way representative of the 18% gratuity our server thought he was going to get. Also I made mention to the fact that we were not informed that gratuity would be added so when that happens, I automatically think that the server is trying to steal from me. I also pointed out to the manager that her restaurant smelled of rotten fish. And finally to end my conversation I told her that next time she may not want to leave a customer waiting for 20 minutes while she gets stoned out back. Salmon was excellent, Prime Rib (Friday and Saturday features) was tough and a little too much fat. I certainly have had better. Service was ok. We were seated (5 of us) in an area where a party of 20-25 arrived shortly after we sat down. The group did not sit but stood next to and around the tables of those of us who were having dinner. Very noisy and uncomfortable. The decision to mix a private party with families out for dinner was unacceptable and something I have never experienced. I do not fault the party goers (they were having a good time.) Nice atmosphere. Easy parking. Professional hostesses. Nice weekly happy hour specials. As for the food- not impressed. The Lobster roll (at $15.00) was served on a toasted piece of white bread with two scoops of greasy, mayo, lobster salad. Burger and buns both very buttery/greasy, as well as, the fish special. Could not even taste the fish because of the buttery flavor of everything. House merlot was very nice. We have eaten here many times over the last 5 years and this is the first season that this "grease" affect has happened. Perhaps new chef??? We'll try again next summer. read more

Waited 10 minutes to be greeted and seated but nobody ever bothered to see if there were customers waiting at the hostess desk. Could hear the staff laughing in the kitchen. Walked out at that point and won't be returning. Horrible first impression. read more

Not usually one to write a review, but this experience warded one. We were there at 2:10p on Wednesday, two of five people in the bar area. Our waitress greeted us, took our beverage order, and NEVER returned. Our drinks sat on the end of the bar for 18 minutes. Why didn't the bartender walk them over? After debating whether to get them ourselves, we decided to leave. The hostess asked us if we'd changed our minds and after telling her our experience, she shrugged and said, "have a nice day". Maybe I am biased because it is in my "hood", but my wife and I must eat here once a month. Have never encountered poor service and every meal has been good. Menu is highly diverse covering a good price range with entrees under 10 to 25. Atmosphere is contemporary and comfortable. The season is now past, but we love the patios and outdoor bar. By far the best choice for any occasion in South metro area. Typically causal live entertainment on weekends in the bar or outdoors by the fire pits in the summer. read more

The service staff was pleasant and reasonably quick. The French onion soup was decent. That's where the positive part ends. We were visiting home from Florida and decided to leave the kids with family for a quick mom and dad only lunch. Yelp reviews were overall positive, so we gave FireRock a try. When we first sat down I was disappointed to read the menu and see the house's signature dishes were signature in that they were served with a hot lava rock so you could cook it yourself. I typically go to a restaurant so a trained/experienced chef can cook my food, not for a 'do it yourself' experience. Since we were there for lunch and not a large entrée, we moved ahead undaunted. We started with the lettuce wraps. Immediate disappointment when they arrive the table. A pile of brown shredded chicken (tasting like canned meat in soy sauce) topped with carrots, accompanied by a pile of iceberg lettuce to again 'do yourself.' The main course was soup and salad. The roasted wild mushroom soup tastes like canned mushroom soup with fresh mushrooms added. But, how can you go wrong with a spicy chicken sandwich as the main dish? Here is how: don't call it "roasted garlic & jalapeño cream sauce" if it's mayonnaise. To sum up, a terrible disappointment, and we will not be returning. read more

This place was just awful. We were hopeful of finding a decent restaurant in the Caledonia area, and despite the mixed reviews, we gave it a shot. The hostesses were all rude and non welcoming. While our waitress was sweet, the food was bland, and soaking in grease. We left hungry and disappointed. Not going back!! read more

Stopped here on a whim, thinking it was a nice place and I'd eaten at a restaurant where food was served on a rock in Novi and loved it. 1st the baked goat cheese is misrepresented it should be titled marinara with a little goat cheese. 2nd my husband ended up going up to the bar for the wine we ordered (previous posts mentioned issues with service so they're obviously under staffed) 3rd the manager brought us our dinner and I mentioned that I didn't order the tuna (although looked delicious). Her response, well, this is table 402...not what did you order or let me speak to your waitress. She later brought the platter back out because it actually belonged to table next to us. 4th The manager came back with our order, which was also incorrect and when I said that's not what he ordered, she walked away. Waitress comes back to ask how things look, I said he was supposed to get the filet served on the rock (hence the name fire rock), her response, well I asked if you wanted the 6 or 8 oz filet. FireRock Grille has an amazing atmosphere which helps set the scene for a fancy night out, a cozy dinner with friends, or casual time with the family - all in one! The service is unbeatable, professional, and classy rolled together. I will always choose a local Redwater Restaurant over the local GR collection any day of the week. I have had only positive and relaxing experience with each encounter, including Rush Creek Bistro and Cork. I highly recommend to all my friends and it is the first choice for my company's business guests while in town. read more

We've been here once before and thought it was pretty good. But today was horrible, had to ask he hostess if our server knew we had been seated after 30 minutes. The hostess eventually brought us some water. Eventually someone came to take our drink order 10 minutes later. Then someone else came for our food order a full 50 min after we were seated. Imagine my surprise when this young lady told us that prime rib only comes in one temperature. I told her please place my wife's order as she requested. Service was slow and we felt like the didn't really care if we were there or not. It's not like it was busy either, there were only about 6-7 tables in the dining room and at least that many workers wandering around. Not like this place is low priced either, total for meals and drinks was well over $120, yet none of the staff ever once apologized for the slow service or the long wait. Manager contacted me via email and I provided details, almost a week later and yet to hear a reply. Guess the workers follow the lead of the managers. Save your money folks, this place clearly doesn't need it. read more

I have dined here several times and have to say I will probably not return. My husband and I chose to stop on January 2, 2013 for a quick dinner. I realize that the $10 steak dinner will not get me a prime cut of beef, but this was too tough to enjoy. Had it been only the steak I would not be writing this review, but passing off a pile of mashed potatoes with wallpaper paste consistency with truffle olive oil poured over top as truffle mashed potatoes does not make for a pleasant dining experience. So, it took me a while to actually come try this place for myself after reading mostly negative reviews. I should of not wasted my $60 on trying this place. First off, let me just tell you that you should never even try this place. The food is absolutely terrible and way too pricey. Just a joke. Second off, slow service to top it all off. Chose FireRock to celebrate my birthday and take advantage of their birthday special while also trying a new place. We were both pretty disappointed. The atmosphere was nice enough and their menu had a lot on it. The biggest issue was the service. Our server was very slow and didn't explain anything to us. I ordered the margarita because it was Cinco De Mayo after all and it was very bland. Not much taste. We wanted to order an appetizer but after waiting forever for her to come back we decided to just get dinner. We both ordered the FireRock Filet. The server disappeared before I could order the glass of wine I wanted to go with the meal. Literally 5 minutes later she came back with bread and said "your steak is right behind me" then left. We had no idea it would be a raw piece of meat you cook yourself on the rock. We had to ask the food runner what we were supposed to do! They don't give you a second plate for the meat that is cooked enough, so it continues to cook while you are eating. The server never asked how things were going, but instead came back halfway through to ask if we wanted dessert. We haven't even finished supper yet! We were in and out of there in 45 min. Not quite the nice dinner out we planned on. We will most likely not be returning, but I thought the concept was neat. read more

I really wish this was a better restaurant. The location and facilty are fantastic and the service has always been great. Unfortunately, the food is ordinary on a good day and barely edible on a bad day. I eat here every few months just hoping that things will have turned around. So far, I'm still disappointed. One striking memory was when I tried the seared tuna...I was told that they deliberately tried to NOT duplicate San Chez's approach. Went to FireRock Grille on a Sunday night. Really enjoyed the patio, the sunset and atmosphere. I always enjoy a little music and it was either very low or non existent. But that was my only (very minor) complaint. Happy Hour prices are fantastic with many items half off. My favorite was the lettuce rolls... our server got pretty busy a few times and a manager stepped in to help.... love the team work. read more

We went for lunch and were seated fairly quickly. Our waitress was great! However, I thought it was pretty overpriced for what you get. I got the 1/2 lbs steak burger and I thought it was closer to a 1/4 lbs. I asked for it medium and it was definitely cooked well done. Glad I payed extra for cheese to cover the dryness of it. I also opted to pay extra for fries and though they tasted great, qty was pretty lacking. Food took a bit longer than expected as well especially seeing is we were one of the very few tables filled at the time. All in all, it wasn't horrible food but definitely not worth the price in my opinion... read more

A friend and I dined here on 1/22/15. She arrived first and let the server know I was coming, but after waiting several minutes, I finally had to practically lasso the server to let her know I was there and "ask" if she would take my drink order. Our dinners came far too quickly on the heels of our soup and salad starters, and it was only so/so - and definitely not worth the price (mashed potatoes were waxen and not up to temp, broccoli was cold and tough, steak awfully "chewy"). We hardly saw our elusive server; she never asked if we wanted more drinks or dessert, and it seemed clear that she and the rest of the staff were spending the majority of their time schmoozing with the members - who are seated separately in a "Members Only" room. (Found that sign quite offputting, too). Not at all impressed; will not return. read more

We had a party of 8 with reservations for a birthday dinner. We were not impressed at all. T he menu consisted a too many UP charges. I ordered my steak to be med well. The steak came charred which means it was well done. the replacement steak was bleeding. they couldn"t seem to get it right. The manager wasn"t the least bit concerned.For the price of the meals i can assure you that there are more than a dozen other resteraunts that do a much better job or actually care if they don"t. We will not be returning and will be real surprised if this resteraunt is still in bussiness in the near future. read more

This place gets my first ever review!! I had to comment because it was really that bad! We waited over 15 minutes for a waitress to service our table, on a nearly empty dining room at 8:30 on a Wednesday! I can't imagine what it is like during peak hours! Then when she arrived, without apology, she rushed us to order as if we were not waiting for her! Then when we did order, two drinks and an app, our waitress disappeared for another 15 minutes! About this time we were almost to the point of being annoyed, but when she returned with out drinks without the app. So, we figured we should probably just order dinner (Lobster Mac and Cheese and a Fire Rock Steak) because we figured we would never get our food if we didn't! Not really to our surprise, our waitress promptly disappeared again! Our app was brought to us by another waiter and was fairly good, a bit small for the price, but had it been characteristic of the rest of the meal, we would have probably returned to have it again! But our dinner, also delivered by another waiter, now that was downright terrible! Our steak came out without the "Fire Rock"! How is that even possible, when that is the name of the restaurant!!! The Lobster Mac came out with maybe three pieces of real Lobster, but the majority was imitation! The waitress, when she finally returned, would not even admit to it being fake! As a former vegetarian, I know fake meat!!! And if she, and the rest of the staff, wanted me to believe it was real, maybe the waitress should have returned more than once, and maybe gotten us a second drink!
