The Fireside is a little nook, easy to overlook, at the intersection of the halls that lead to the theater and the soaking pool. It's warm and dimly lit by a fireplace (of course), and a perfect retreat from the frigid cold of a winter afternoon in Bend. It's feels a bit like sitting in a den or study, so you'll get some Clue vibes here. Limited menu, tasty drinks and a few pub games, but its real draw is its calm and solitude. My favorite bar at Old St. Francis, although I think I'd prefer the Broom Closet, if it were open, because I'm big on secret rooms.

Food: Really good artisan cuisine, this is way better than typical "pub-fare" Their pizza is amazing too! Grab a beer, get some grub, and grab a shirt before you leave. You must go there when you're downtown window shopping. Prices: $$ What you'd expect for such a great place! Parking: This is downtown, so before rush-hour, it's not bad (be mindful of the parking time posted on the signs). You probably don't need reservations, I never have, but if you have a large party, might be a good idea! Very enjoyable!

Well, except the wings which were a little dried out, but still edible. The fries were hot and fresh, the Nashville chicken sandwich had a great spice and was freshly made, the size caesar salad was small, but fresh and flavorful, and the Margherita pizza was one you'd expect in a brewery, but won't make you think you're in Italy. We didn't partake in beer since we were off to work in the afternoon, but looking at the menu, I didn't see anything that was for me. I'm a wheat beer fan and didn't see anything that would entice me to return for a beer later.

Half the fun is searching the property for it--and don't worry, I won't spoil where we found it! Once inside, it truly felt like a hidden gem. The space is cozy and intimate, with comfortable places to sit and a full bar that feels tucked away from the rest of the property. It was especially festive during the holidays, with Christmas drink specials adding to the charm. I ordered the NA Merry Cherry, which was gingery, slightly spicy, and super refreshing--a great non-alcoholic option. My wife had The Countess and said it was absolutely delicious. Between the atmosphere, the drinks, and the fun of discovering it, The Broom Closet was a total win. If you're ever staying at McMenamins Bend, make sure you take the time to search for The Broom Closet--it's well worth the adventure!

Bad news. Good news…read more Bad news first is this: The Drake has been sold to new owners and TONIGHT, APRIL 12, WILL BE THE LAST DAY OF SERVICE at The Drake with the original owner and the current menu. So if you're hankering for the mac n cheese or shrimp n grits or veg burger or any of the menu items, after today they are history. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. In the meantime, I remember how fun and delicious it could be to eat at The Drake.

They were simple and well-made and relatively strong. Very cute little location seating wasn't an issue, even though we didn't make reservation reservations ahead of time Just overall a very solid little spot, we got some sliders and some other little sides and everything was put together well and price right. Definitely acquired a place so probably good. We didn't bring the kids.

I guess a lot of places do beer right! I was staying at the Springhill Suites a few doors down and this place was a welcome delight. I was able to snag a table, have a delicious beer flight, and a wonderful pork schnitzel dish. My spatzel was cold so I asked for some fresh and it was much better. Boiled perfectly and then pan fried in butter or something. Nice texture. The place is kinda nice too. It had a spacious interior and a wonderful outside space where a lot of patrons were happy drinking and dining. And that custom table!!! I wish I was here in Bend longer as I would have liked to return and try more of those delicious beers. If I'm ever in Bend again, Surely I'm going here (and I won't stop calling you Shirley).

Monkless is certainly that and are consistently turning out some of the best Belgian beers in the northwest. Work with your server to put together a tasting flight, then try to decide what you like best and order a full pour. We stuck with the shareables and a dessert. The pretzel and cheese sauce were fire! The poutine only lasted a few minutes on the table and the sausage plate was great, although one of the sausages was a bit over done. They are char grilled, so if that's not your jamb, skip over it. My daughters only let me have one small bite of the chocolate cake before it disappeared.
