A comfortable, attractive restaurant inside and out, with sprawling grounds, nice gardens, free parking, and a lovely outdoor patio with a fireplace . . . . Oh, the food . . . . Ok, I've been eating here since it became Fireside Grill and have found consistent quality, creativity and value. You can tell the chef cares. My go-to lunch is the Applewood Smoked Chicken Breast and Quinoa Salad ($14.50). It's healthy and flavourful with tomatoes and pea shoots. The skinless chicken is nicely smoked and makes it a filling dish. It's topped with fresh blueberries in summer, thawed frozen blueberries in winter. Saturday I chose the BBQ Pork and Utica Greens Wrap with tomato soup ($12), based entirely on the scent of wafting BBQ meat outside in the parking lot. It was the BBQ pulled pork and it tasted as tangy and good as it smelled. Also had saffron rice pilaf and tomatoes in the wrap, with mild chilies that added a nice warm finish. This wrap was big and addictive. The tomato soup was really delicious with veggies such as zucchini, beans, and grape tomatoes that would pop fresh in your mouth. A basket of bread is served after your order is taken. In the summer, the patio is one of the best for al fresco dining, and to impress friends visiting Victoria. The three course dinner special ($23) is good value with thoughtful gourmet flavour combinations. The best braised short ribs I've ever had came as one of the specials a couple summers ago . . . I still remember. Christmas time I hosted a luncheon for eight and everyone was happy with the dishes they ordered from beef carpaccio to salads to veggie pizza, paninis and calamari. The Christmas decoration in the main room was big and beautiful. The restaurant was full, yet our large table received friendly, timely and caring service, as I found last Saturday and all other times. Reservations recommended for lunch or dinner. read more

It was a special occasion to celebrate a business deal, my wife and I were treating the other couple. The service was good but, the food was not. The large wonton soup came small, so another small was offered. It was so salty and only 2 wontons each. My wife and I split a large ceasar salad which was good. The pork belly and scallops came cold and largely unpalatable. The full order ribs were good and plentiful but, came on mashed potato with 2 tiny carrots. The 1/2 order was meagre. I ordered the lamb served on mashed potato and 2 tiny carrots. This was a very plain dinner with no trimmings. The after dinner monte cristos were served warm. In spite of the loud noise created by a full house with high ceilings, we were able to have great conversation. In spite of the food, we enjoyed the company and the evening out with them. read more

My wife and I decided to go the Fireside last Sunday to take advantage of their special three-course menu. We often go here as the food is consistently superior and the ambiance of the restaurant is wonderful. We were not disappointed. Although the restaurant was full, the service that we received was prompt and friendly. Our food arrived in good time and was very well presented and delicious. The nice thing about The Fireside is that even though there were several large groups of guests, the noise level in the big room was not over whelming and My wife and I could have a quiet conversation. We ordered food and it came out extremely later than we expected.(other table who came way later than us were already done when we got the food) We complained but the manager was so mean and she did not seem to know how to take care of customers. My husband and I had an excellent dinner here for our anniversary. The seafood chowder was probably the best I have ever had. It was loaded with clams, salmon, prawns and mussels. The calamari was good, with a light batter and two dipping sauces. The Kobe beef and crab burger was original and tasty. If the weather is nice, opt for a table outside as the inside seating can get quite loud when busy. If it's a cold day, try for one of the tables at a fireplace. read more

New parents my fiance and I barley get out. On the rare occasion we do we go straight to fireside! We went out tonight, as soon as we walked in the door we were greeted with smiles and although being busy and us not making a reso we were sat immediately without hesitation. The atmosphere is so welcoming, like you're at a family wedding or something. We have had JD as our server everytime and he is such a joy. Friendly, very funny, and still professional! He greets us immediately and takes our order at the perfect time. Our food comes out promptly but not to fast and looks absolutely amazing (like artwork on a plate). We first had the pork belly app and the bocconci salad, the pork was very heavy but nicely balanced by the salad. We then had the bruschetta which is always a treat and the tuna. The tuna was fishier and more chewy then I remember from last time. But all in all it way a beautiful night out. We took the sticky toffee pudding home because we couldn't resist and it was unbelievable. We love you guys keep doing what your doing because it is working Although as we were leaving we said thank you and goodbye to the hostesses and they didn't look up at us or ignoladge us sad but it happens! We go to this restaurant quite often for lunch and occasionally dinner. Their portabella sandwich is excellent! For dinner the appys are my favourite... Muscles and calamari are both very tasty. Also lamb pasta is always delicious. However, I was disappointed with the salmon with pesto and polenta flavoured with goat cheese... Salmon was too dry and the flavours did not go well together... All in all the dish was dry, dry, dry. I love salmon but I would not order that again. Service was excellent and the ambiance was great too! read more

Tonight was our first visit to the Fireside Grill but it certainly will not be our last. Our food was delicious. One must try the mussels as they are amazing! Our server was polite and prompt, my water glass was never empty. The decor was fantastic! We truly enjoyed the large beautifully decorated Christmas tree. To finish off a splendid experience we had the cheese cake which was also very tasty. On top of all of this the prices were very reasonable for such great service and delicious food. Very disappointed with our recent experience. It appears the some staff need considerable more training/experience to work in an upscale place like Fireside. The bottle of white wine we received was not particularly cold. Our server didn't even think to provide a cooler. We had to ask. The worst part of the evening was my steak. It was far from the medium rare I requested. There was essentially no pink at all. I'm not typically the type to complain and I've only ever sent something back to the kitchen once before but I felt the priced charged for the meal warranted it. By the time the replacement arrived (about 12 minutes), most of our party had finished their meal but I was happy to get a fresh plate with my new steak. Unfortunately, the kitchen had prepared it identically to the first - basically medium, medium well. I sent this back too & asked it to be take on off the bill. It was. The manager (maybe hostess) stopped by a few minutes later to discuss. She, like our server, was sympathetic and sincerely apologized. I was offered another meal but declined. Sending food back to the kitchen once is dangerous. Sending it back a second time is suicide. I was also offered a complementary dessert but didn't want this before I had a meal. In the end, I felt they could have done more. They could have comped the wine or offered a certificate or something else. All in all, I left disappointed and I'll likely never return. read more

We celebrated a birthday at the Fireside Grill this evening. While the food and service were excellent, the seating was terrible. I had an amazing view of the sun, in my face for 60 of the 90 minutes we were there, despite the manager's assurance it would be gone in ten minutes (maybe she needs a new watch). Dessert and coffee would have been nice, but to be honest I just couldn't take it any longer. I also noticed the party seated behind us were also struggling with the sunlight. I'm sure this is isn't the first time the sun has lit up that part of the restaurant in such a manner. I asked the manager and she informed me that's the only light the restaurant gets at that time of night so it is quite necessary. Am I to assume the restaurant closes at sunset due to a lack of light? read more

They're menu is also quite extensive and physically very large (don't know why the waitress felt she needed to distribute one menu per person when a menu could've been easily shared between 2 people because it was SO big but that's fine) We asked for butter for our bread and our waitress had to be reminded twice. We asked for a hot water and she had to be reminded again. We ordered Warm Brussels Sprout Salad with chicken and 3 Prawn and Scallop Linguine's. The salad was pretty good. Brussel sprouts were splendid, but the chicken was incredibly dry. I would definitely advise against adding the extra chicken. The linguines, when delivered, looked very inconsistent at first glance. One had very large scallops and a lot of Parmesan already added. The other two looked like it had been moved around before serving so it looked kind of messy with very little to no Parmesan added at all. The scallops on those were medium sized. When I ate my pasta, (the lesser of the 3) it tasted quite acidic. I figured it must be some vinegar that they added and overpowered the dish. Not a very nice experience. I have eaten at the Fireside Grill a couple times now. From experience, the only menu item I will order is the 10 oz New York Steak (they prepare them perfectly). Every other entree sounds okay, but for some reason the chef adds completely odd ingredients to dishes that could be delicious. For example, the prawn and scallop fettucine has onions, mushrooms... and black beans? Also, stay away from the $20 three course meals- they leave much to be desired. read more

Whenever we feel in the mood for a meal out but not necessarily taking a chance on something new then it's always FIRESIDE GRILL as our go to place. Perfect for a romantic dinner or getting together with friends. We love the "great room" which conjures up feelings of a manor house in England. Outdoor seasonal seating so nice beside the gardens. The food is consistent. It's delicious, generous and healthy....in that they use local and organic when they can. The generous basket of homemade bread with whipped butter and the best house wine served by attentive staff get us in the mood for our mains. My favourite items are the large Cesar Salad and stewed lamb pasta. My husband often goes for the flat iron steak or the chicken with gorgonzola cheese. All delicious! We took a group of 30 people in for dinner and had the option of a private room and every single meal was praised and the service for 30 was efficient, quick and friendly. I highly recommend FG. We showed up without a reservation and were seated immediately, although the place was crowded, by the fireplace. We all ordered the three-course prix fixe tasting menu ... really, really interesting food. I can't remember being so interested in a restaurant from its tasting menu in a long, long time. If I lived in the area I would definitely return and try to work my way through the menu.
