Lodge House Fireside Inn Idyllwild Ca
    Jen R.

We stayed a weekend at the Lodge house and loved it! The decor is a bit too 'hunting lodgey' for our taste but thats honestly the only downside (except cold bathrooms!). Close to town. Great big front deck and chairs, very clean and fully equipped modern kitchen and bathrooms. Beautiful wood burning fireplace. Lots of good books to read if you don't bring your own. Didn't use the hot tub but it looks nice so maybe on next visit! Will be back for sure perfect place for mountain getaway.

Loved my little cabin! So much room. Plenty of storage. Cute little patio. Parking. Walk to town. A few more wine glasses would have been nice. Ice in the freezer was old. I had to throw it out. One more roll of paper towels could have been useful. The maids have the place right next door and they are noisy in the morning. Fireplace was great. Bring your own firewood or a duraflame log. Heater got hot very fast. Staff was friendly and communicated via text in a timely manner. King bed was so comfortable. Pet bowls under the sink were very thoughtful and poop bags out front, but they ran out. I love that they are so pet friendly! I would definitely stay here again.

Peeling paint... obviously the original tiles were painted over.

There is no one to check you in - it's all done by text. They will give you a code to enter (last 4 of your cell number). I booked 2 nights here hoping to have a nice visit & stay at the Fireside Inn. We booked the "Fir Cabin". 1. Very outdated... did not really get a good vibe when we walked in. 2. There is a fireplace but you will need to supply the firewood. There is an electric heater for use but it's very small & takes forever to heat up the living room area. 3. Bedroom was large; bed comfy; but linen worn & needs replacing. Wall heater worked. We had to put towels down at the bedroom door so that no critters could get in while we slept which was difficult to do (see #4) 4. First evening, we were watching a movie until I saw a mouse at the corner of the fireplace. That thing ran into the kitchen underneath the refrigerator. We opened the front door hoping it would bolt out when I moved the fridge from the wall. Nope!!! That's why we placed towels at the bedroom door so it couldn't sneak in while we tried to sleep. I actually had to leave a light on all night because I was not comfortable. 5. Upgrades are really needed. *Some kitchen cabinets & drawers missing knobs. Very minimal dishes. I needed to heat up some water & had to wash a pot because it had a greasy residue on it. There was a burn mark on the kitchen wall next to the counter. Also, floor next to the kitchen sink had an area that sunk down as you stepped there (unsafe - subflooring probably needs to be replaced). *Bathroom shower wall was peeling. Bring your own toiletries (shampoo/conditioner and soap provided are not the best). *Furniture worn & dirty. Artwork has got to go (depressing) & the 4 legged hoof lamp gave me the creeps!!! 6. I was not about to get through a second night here, so we left mid afternoon instead of the next day. 7. Save your money ($129/night + taxes). You're better off at a hotel in nearby cities and do a day trip (not too much to do around here anyway).

Brought a ton of my own wood (thank goodness I did because the heater was dead!)

The PROS: Stand-alone cabins are super cozy. The wood fireplaces really nice touch, which is way better than gas fireplaces. The CONS: The management is remote. So if you need help with something, be prepared that the issue won't be resolved in a timely manner. For example, on a day when temperature dropped to near freezing, the cabin's heater should have been working. As it was after hours (the policy states after 7pm, there will be no one to respond) I didn't ask for help once I realized the heater was dead around 10pm. Luckily, I had enough firewood to keep me warm through out the night. It would have been a VERY unpleasant stay otherwise, especially with a non-working heater. At around 8am the next day, I texted the owner. She apologized and said she would send someone immediately. I updated her several times as the maintenance guy was a no show for several hours. The maintenance guy didn't show up until AFTER 11am. (Luckily, I had asked for a late check out at noon, otherwise I would have left the cabin as a popsicle. I didn't even ask for a comp with the reservation, but rather asked her consider giving me a discount the NEXT TIME. A reasonable ask! Suddenly, it was crickets! Overall, the owner fell really short of customer service. I would not recommend coming here.

I haven't seen a setup like this since Camp!

Giving this 1 star for the most important part of your stay. THE BED! Overpriced for the experience! We stayed in the squirrels nest, appropriately titled for this springy mattress. It felt like we were sleeping on a donated mattress, one that had been shaped to someone's body over the years! My girlfriend at least had a good laugh because it reminded her of a "I Love Lucy" episode. I should've had her pack me in the mattress divot like Ethel did Fred in that episode, maybe I could've gotten some rest. We went by the 4.5 star reviews, but clearly none of the reviewers have slept in the squirrels nest. If they have then this is probably the first time they've seen running water. Also there was a street light and the lighted sign out front shining through our paper thin curtains all night. Next we have the mini fridge balancing a microwave rocking on a tiny stand. Watch your feet! Or your small kids, dangerous! Another sense of nostalgia was the shower, I haven't seen a setup like this since I was a kid at camp. It's a shame because the cabin could be great with improvements and it's nice walking distance into town. Cheers! Replying to the owners comment: You say the photos are terrible! Yet the photos are of the room you rented me and you admit they are terrible. What does that say? If you don't like the honest review about the room. Then stop renting your TERRIBLE room until it's upgraded. Go lay on that bed and tell me half empty, THE BED IS A JOKE! This was my first stay and first time in Idyllwild and I didn't get a tour or before and after photos of what your doing to the property. By your own account, you rented me a TERRIBLE room. I know! That's why you have a TERRIBLE review, that's how it works!

Where is the "luxury triple room" aka "lodge cabin" located?

Just outside of the downtown area. Close and a bit of a nice walk to town.

We enjoyed our 3-day stay in room 201 which included a king bed and a daybed. Seven of the rooms feature stunning electric fireplaces and this room was one of them. Our only complaint was that the Casper mattresses they use in their suites were way too soft. It's important to point out that there's no front desk in this establishment, but we did see staff at check-in and at various times throughout our stay. If we ever visit Idyllwild again, we will be booking another reservation at The Creekstone!

Within 5 minutes of arriving to our room, someone came to inform us that our son wasn't welcome because children under the age of 12 are prohibited. He also informed us that he would be charging us an additional $50 and that if there were any noise complaints, he would bring them to our attention immediately. First off, nowhere when booking does this hotel specify that children are prohibited. It's not clear unless you go to their policies page that it indicates children are 'discouraged'. Do you know why? Because the walls are paper thin. Our child was silent and asleep by 7:30pm but we could hear everything the adults next door were saying and watching on the TV (at reasonable volumes, mind you). And to top it all off, Google says this IS a kid-friendly hotel. Second, should you need anything, you can't get ahold of anyone. There is no front desk and you don't have any service so you can't call anyone or send a text through their SMS service. So I hope you don't need an extra towel or Kleenex because no one will be available to assist you. Except the guy who magically appears to charge you $50 and then is nowhere to be found. It's really too bad that such a nice hotel has such crappy service and is so unkind to families. They forget that parents are regular people too who enjoy get aways without kids and have plenty of parent friends who they will be informing to skip the Creekstone Inn and stay somewhere else.

It was a little difficult for me to get any sleep the first night because of the smoke smell. But airing it out the next day (and a 10mile hike) helped! AS IDYLLWILD STARTER SPOT = 5-stars! If this is your first time to Idyllwild, this is great. Easy to find. Easy to walk to town. Quiet and away from town center. Budget between "cabin" and "hotel" FIRST TIME to Idyllwild. The address is on Hwy 243. Unlike other major roads, it is empty after 8pm - so don't worry that it might be noisy. It's not. On the plus side: If you've never been here, it's very easy to find. But also away from the center of town (but not so far that you can't walk to it) INNKEEPERS & STAFF The innkeepers who greeted us when we arrived and checked us out were very helpful and extremely friendly. There is a small shop for gifts in the lobby area. Some booking services might not have all of the right information. Call the front desk with questions. They are super helpful. PARKING Easy to find and plenty of parking out front ROOMS (Evergreen) We stayed in one of the original (older) rooms. It has been upgraded with new plumbing and a jacuzzi style jet tub alongside the shower. The room is spacious and comfortably fits all of your gear on one side of the room away from the bed. A big hearth in front of the fireplace is perfect for a make-shift table. The drawback to this particular room (Evergreen) is that you are under the stairs to the rooms above. Not terrible, as most people were in by 9pm. But you will hear them creaking up and down when they leave their rooms. You can't hear them in the rooms. There are other rooms that are not connected or under other people's rooms. Clean sheets Clean towels Nice shower (saloon doors on old shower) Separate toilet/tub room. Pillows are a little flat HVAC works well (workers came in to check it while we were there) Fun/Silly books and board games in the room. - Didn't use fireplace - Didn't use television - Just needed a spot to sleep and shower before the next day's adventure. This was perfect +. COMMON SPACES INSIDE; There is a fantastic common space in the main house/lobby. Large long tables for where they used to serve breakfast. (There is no breakfast service: hotel style coffee en suite) The long tables are great for spreading out maps, games, whatever needs a bunch of space outside of your room. OUTSIDE; 1. Back Deck: There's a warm, sunny deck, protected from wind and hwy sounds. Everyone's room opens onto this space. 2. Gazebo: A small 4 seat gazebo is in the southern garden area. With views of the creek area, this is a great spot to take a nice afternoon rest stop. Nice place to sit to read, or sketch, or just close your eyes for a minute and say "I'm NOT asleep". GETTING AROUND: TO TOWN: The inn is a perfect distance from town. About 7-10 minutes to walk, there's a path that leads from the back door of the inn to the edge of town. STRAWBERRY CREEK is what it's all about. Walking this path back and forth to town is FANTASTIC. The path to town might be THE MAIN SELLING POINT OF THE INN. The stairs down to the creek path are a little severe, but the path is VERY easy to walk. Driving to town feels silly = 2 minutes. IDYLLWILD PARK (& Campground) Perimeter Hike (4 miles). Strawberry Creek Inn is a short (2-4 block walk) to the campground. The perimeter trail isn't especially technical (although a little steep in some spots), but it's basically just across the street from the inn.

The event was on an area covered with fake grass, so no dust and surrounded by pine trees with mountains in the background. The luau food was pretty darn good and at $20 seem to be a bargain. Entrance fee was $10 for adults and seem to be a very good deal considering the authentic Hawaiian entertainment provided.
