Stayed at the Bear's Bungalow a couple months ago and loved it with the exception of the hard mattress. My husband loves a firm mattress so no complaints from him. The couch was incredibly comfortable and the fireplace was probably my favorite thing about the place. It is rustic but that's our style. My husband and I stayed here only one night. We stayed in the Oak leaf cottage. The room was quite quaint. Very clean with a fireplace, kitchen and bathroom with shower. The room also had a gas furnace which works well. There is wood available onsite for $5 a bundle, movies available to rent in the office and parking directly in front of your cottage. The Inn is located walking distance to most of the downtown Idyllwild eateries and shopping. My husband and I will definitely be back. On a side note: we spent the night the day before a storm hit and let me just say, when we woke up, it was absolutely gorgeous. First time in Idyllwild and the first time staying at the "Fireside Inn". Centrally located to restaurants and the heart of Idyllwild. Booking, check in and check out was a breeze. Both Pam and Larry are lovely people to deal with. Our cabin, "Acorn", was rustic, roomy, clean, with a fireplace and very quite. Firewood is available at the office.The full kitchen was very convenient for preparing breakfast and a slow start to the day. There is a BBQ area with seating, also dedicated parking. The price wasn't bad, unfortunately we could not take advantage of the free third night. They do not accept AMEX but, that will not deter us from returning to this great location. read more

We love the bluebird cabin on the Fireside Properties in Idyllwild. We have been coming for years. I am sorry to say that this lovely cabin is getting dingy now. Do the owners care anymore ? The house keeping is not good, what happened to a vacuum ? The large chair cushion was completely worn down. Unusable, The large couch as well, ( facing the Kitchen ) is hard to sit on. We sink down into the couch. Can't you at least replace the cushions worn out and saggy ? Ok there is a tear in the carpet. But .. the Paint peeling ..what about a touch up. The bathroom toilet paper holder rusty and falls down, flimsy wire hangers. Spend a few dollars for a few plastic hangers for goodness sake. We pay good money for a night. Where is the spirit of excellence ? Owners, do you ever go inside your cabins and look around ? One of these days we will not be back. That would be a shame, a few small changes would mean not losing return customers. We are not picky people... just care a little, please. read more

Oh where to begin! First off cheap prices. My girlfriend and I spent days on the internet trying to find a cheap San Diego get-away (a nice little cabin in the snow) and BOOM! Fireside Inn. Low room fees with wi-fi, fireplace and mini kitchen- only an extra $10 for a dog. The owners Larry and Pam were super nice with great stories and a friendly attuide. Larry even said he liked my Weezer shirt which earns huge points in my book. Great, cute place. Close to the town, Nature Center, Humber park and breath taking, snow covered trials. Have been coming here annually in August. The proprietors are friendly, the rooms are clean and cutely decorated. Close to nearby great restaurants. Quiet, peaceful with great views; all at a very affordable price during the week. Who could ask for more? Hmmm, well maybe sell bottled water in the office. We got pretty dehydrated ( our own fault). I am writing this review on my last morning here at The Fireside Inn. I have been here for the 3 day weekend but wish I could stay another week. I cannot say enough good things about this sweet, cozy, rustic and charming little place. I usually come to Idyllwild with my boyfriend and we have always had our favorite place to stay. This time I wanted a weekend all to myself and the usual place was booked. After searching online, I found the Fireside Inn and booked their last available cabin which happened to be the Acorn. After parking my car upon arrival, I only had to drive it again once, which was to go up the mountain to Humber Park for a hike. Restaurants, massage, yoga, shopping......everything is just a short walk away. But yet you're still just far enough off the center of town to enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountain. I was looking forward to sitting by the fireplace and reading and journaling. And that is just what I did a good portion of my stay. I have had some of my best nights sleep in the delicious king size bed, adorned with cozy fresh linens and down-filled pillows. I had the pleasure of meeting the owners when I checked in and learned that they had just taken over the property about a year ago. It sounds like they have done a lot of work to it as it continues to be a work in progress. I cannot wait to come back and bring my boyfriend, as I know he will appreciate everything about this little gem as much as I do. read more

Our first choice when staying in town, we have done both the attached and unattached cabins they have all been good, clean quiet, the staff is friendly , you can pick from a small to large depending on the size of your group, they have a library of DVD's to borrow. No premium cable like HBO but that's a minor issue , close to town or in town depending on which location you stay at, it's all good read more

Stayed in the lodge. It was not worth the price. Steel wool stuffed in the holes for a clear protection against the rodent problem, cobwebs on the chandelier and throughout the rest of the property, old used sponge in the sink, Exfoliating pillows on the couch, electric taped stair case to the loft. This place was disgusting. We had plans to make a nice breakfast until we saw how disgusting these accommodations were. When I called to make the reservation the person who answered the phone wash happy to let me know about the stay two night deal where you get the third night free. Great place to stay in Idyllwild. Owners Larry and Pam are fun and very engaging people! We stayed in the Quail cabin, which is located about a mile south of the main inn. Nothing fancy, but the king bed and large jacuzzi tub were very nice. The room has a gas fireplace with a thermostat so you can stay nice and cozy. The kitchen was very functional and let us cook meals in the room which is always nice. A bit of a hike to get to the main part of Idyllwild so you might use your car to get around more than some of the places centrally located. read more

I have been staying a couple of times a year at the Fireside Inns for about 3 years now. Larry is an awesome host and I always enjoy talking with him. My husband and I stayed by ourselves in the Oak Leaf room that is part of the Inn. The price was extremely reasonable and we had a great time. We decided after that great experience to rent one of the little cabins (they are down the road, not located on the same property as the inn.) We took our son and our dog and we all loved it. We now go up about 3 times a year just to have some family time and relax. We usually stay in the Thrush cabin. It's perfect for us because it has a separate bedroom (no door, only a curtain) and a pull out bed in the living room for our son and the dog. There is also a little patio off the back of the cabin so the dog can go lay down outside, but she can't run off. Having a kitchen a dining area is great because you can cook all your meals. We have also stayed at the Eagle's Nest, which is the large cabin. We took the whole family, some friends and several dogs, and there was room for all. The only cabin we didn't care for was the Lark. It was too close to the road for our taste and it didn't have a little patio for the dog. I've stayed at several other places in Idyllwild and this is the one that I keep coming back to. It's not fancy, but it's clean, the kitchens have enough cookware to make your meals, we can bring the dog, and Larry and Pam are great. You just can't beat the price for all that you get! read more

Stayed just one night at the Fireside Inn this past Monday. We rented the "Quail" Cabin which is down the road from the inn itself. All in all we were pleased with this cute little cabin. The only issue for some is that it is right on hwy 243 so it isn't really secluded or anything like that. The traffic is minimal so the noise really wasn't an issue for us. The tub was awesome and HUGE! The cute gas stove in the cabin worked very well and kept us quite warm. I would definitely stay again but might pick a cabin a little more off the main hwy. Stayed at the Squirrel's Nest Cabin in July. Best low cost accommodations in the area. The room was charming and the bed super comfy. Georgia at the front desk was super helpful with local restaurant recommendations, and when I had a tech problem with my cell phone, she let me use hers, and really saved the day for me. This place is awesome. The staff here "Mike" treat you like family. They want to make sure that your stay here is as best as it can get. I came here with the wife and 3 children. We stayed in the Cedar Den. It had 2 twin beds in one room and a king in the other. Mike was nice enough to bring us a fold out bed for our 3rd child. The snow really came in while we were here and Mike gave us directions for some awesome snow play spots for the kids. We stayed 3 nights at Meadow Lark cabin with another couple, in spring of this year. Generally, the accommodations were rustic, but met our needs. For such a large cabin, the bathroom (only one) was quite small. The shower head was awesome and there was plenty of shampoo, conditioner & liquid body soap in large dispensers in the shower (no tub). Everything worked: toilet, drains, range/oven, sink, frig, and small kitchen appliances. I was disappointed to find there were only sugar packets and salt/pepper for condiments. We had to go to the grocery store to buy ketchup, mustard and steak sauce. Plus ice, even tho the frig had an ice maker (but no ice). We spent an extra $15 to get these essentials. I didn't ask the other couple to share this cost, because I planned to take the leftovers home. But when home, I saw I'd left them and milk and other stuff neatly packed in a wine-tote satchel, in the refrigerator in Meadow Lark! G-r-r-r-r. Leaving that behind has nothing to do with Larry or Pam (owners) - that was my error. But I got on the phone with Larry that same afternoon and said I'd be right back up (we live close to Idyllwild) and could be there in less than an hour. He was able to describe the unique wine tote carrier I'd packed the foods in (which I REALLY wanted back-maybe more than the condiments!) but he said that Meadow Lark was already rented to newcomers, had been cleaned by his crew that don't speak English... He asked if he could call me back before I made the trip back up, and he'd check if the tote with food/condiments were still available. (HUH??? I'd only left a few hours before...) He never called me back. I realize a bag of condiments is just a teeny detail in an owner's long To Do list, so I didn't press it, but it irks me, even to this day, that there wasn't a follow up call (thus three stars-we'll check out other places...but might be back). Suggestion to the owners: housekeeping should be told to give you all left-behind items and you make some attempt to give them back to the renters. Or wait 24 hours, and if no interest, keep and distribute as appropriate (for example, stock cabin frigs with left-behind condiments. If people are finicky about using open condiments, let THEM go and buy them new). Bottom line is: when booking with Fireside Inn, bring ALL your own condiments, coffee filters, and an extra paper towel roll...AND put a note on your steering wheel: "Check the refrigerator b-4 leaving" (which is a good idea in any case). Anything you leave behind at Fireside Inn will be a freebee for their housekeepers... read more

Deep sigh. I hated to leave, this was a little slice of heaven. I took my 4- and 6-year old girls up for a girls' only weekend and we had so much fun. We stayed in the Lodge House, which sits back from the rest of the property. It was so private, had a very large deck with our own bbq grill, the loft was so cozy and warm, the bedding was soft, the towels were soft, the kitchen was nicely stocked with equipment and we loved our cozy nights in front of the fire watching DVDs from the office. I don't think pictures do the place justice, as you can tell the owners spent a lot of money and effort in the beautifully landscaped yard with a burbling fountain and we loved all the special lighting at night (won't ruin the surprise.) Even though it's so quiet that you feel you're out in the middle of nowhere, you're right up the hill from town, an easy walk (although I would LOVE it if Idyllwild invested in just one stretch of sidewalk down from Café Aroma to the center of town, walking along the road is a little sketchy.) The only thing I would have loved would have been having at least one Duraflame log ready to go in the fireplace, we got in too late Friday to run back out to get one, and the tap water is really bad (even my girls didn't like it and they're not picky.) So, on your way in to town, grab some logs, a couple jugs of water and a bag of ice and get ready to snuggle in. read more

Stayed 2 nights in the "Bears Bungalow" 1br/1ba. It was so quiet and peaceful the entire time I was there. Downtown area is only about a short 5 minute walk. Was going to stay closer to town, but they were full. In hindsight, I liked being slightly removed from the busy traffic hub. This place is charming! read more

We love the Fireside Inn. When we go to Idyllwild that's the only place we go. It makes the experience perfection! The Fireside Inn is an awesome place for many reasons. The owner and staff are very warm and welcoming . The cabin we always choose to stay in is great. Huge fireplace and the rooms are so clean and tidy. The beds and linens are wonderful for a good nights sleeps. The kitchen has utensils and dishes and then some! The outdoor areas are kept up beautifully. It's so nice when you want to step out and enjoy nature and can relax in an outdoor environment . I also love that they are dog friendly. Our dog now recognizes the cabin we stay in and she can't wait to get inside the front door. That says a lot when she has all the beauty of outdoors which she enjoys but yet she loves her cabin space too! It's home away from home! My friend and I have been coming to the fireside for 20+ years. It was a great get away with our dogs and gave our husbands a break. Last December Pam sold the Circle Drive cottages where we stay. We have been through a couple of ownership changes so this was no big deal. Wrong. The new owners have stripped the units of any useful furniture or kitchen items. We stay in the cedar den and it was just miserable. A small loveseat and a janky chair made of branches. The " full kitchen" had 4 plates and a few glasses ans no bowls. They are caught up in bringing this back to the 1940's which they were built in 1950's. The new owners are aloof never on site so you are left to fend for yourself if there is an issue. There is no phone number given with which to reach them in an emergency. Sadly we will not be back and have already booked an air bnb for October. Unfortunately, I am so disappointed and upset for what happen our stay at the Fireside Inn this past weekend. First of all my friend who rented the Thrush cabin was not notify beforehand that we were going to share a wall with another cabin after the fact that the owner Larry knew that my friend was going to have a small party with close friends. Also he was not informed that there was a "curfew" that after 10 pm there should be no noise. If we would of known this factors before hand we would of never rented this place. But my friend was deluded by the owner Larry about renting the cabin. After we were called by the owner Larry to lower the volume of noise we were making (and that was because we were just started singing karaoke.. we as civil people that we are did not continue to make anymore noise and just watch movies on a laptop!!! We all went to sleep as normal people do and that was it!! On the next day, we were rudely greeted from the owner Larry with two sheriff and we were asked to leave. The owner Larry accused us of not keeping the peace and that we were still "partying" up to 3 am.. which is false!!! Larry treated us as we were criminals, had no mercy in giving us at least time to get our self together and our stuff. There were 2 guys and 4 girls including myself that is 6 months pregnant were not given any compassion by Larry. The only one good thing I want to point out is that of the two sheriffs were very kind to us and notice that we were not indecent people and that we only wanted to have a good time to celebrate our friend birthday that weekend.We felt very humiliated and wrongly accused of not keeping the peace after we were warned.Idyllwild is beautiful and will visit again. I will definitely never rent or recommend this place to anyone to rent!!! read more

We found Fireside Inn online while planning our stay in Idyllwild. The prices attracted us at first, then we saw the pictures of the cabins on the website- beautiful! We reserved the Blue Jay right away for two nights. We arrived a little later than we had anticipated, but Larry was there and nice as could be. We talked about kids (my wife is 6 mos pregnant with our first) and had a pleasant chat while checking in. He gave us some fire starting sticks and sent us on our way to the cabin. It was so nice inside with the heat on just right, beautiful woodsy feel... they also had free movies 'rentals', of which we took 2, one for each night. The bed was clean and comfortable, a full kitchen (really, with pots, pans, dishes, silverware, stove, microwave and mini fridge) was provided and everything was just right. The full kitchen, even though advertised, was a pleasant surprise- when we hear full kitchen, we usually end up finding nothing but a cheap microwave and a couple of dishes. This was really a real kitchen and we didn't use any of the silverware, pans or plates we brought along just in case. On checkout day, we met Pam, Larry's wife, who was just as nice as Larry. This place was so welcoming and cozy, we can't wait to go back. Thanks Larry and Pam at Fireside Inn for making our trip so relaxing and inexpensive! Oh yeah, free wifi and cable too! read more

Stayed at one of the cabins. They don't tell you is the cabins are not at the address advertised. The advertised address is the main office and the cottages, which is right by town. The cabins are about 1-2 miles away from town. There is NO walking to town from the cabins. You need a car to go anywhere. Also the cabins are about 10-15 feet from each other. We were woken up at 2 am by the couple in the next cabin getting thier freak on. also the cabin are not set in the woods. they are cramed together on an asphalt parking lot jamed in-between other houses and businesses. the cabin was nice, i'll give it that. it did have a very, very, very strong wood smell from the fireplace. Also i was very happy they had wireless internet. That was until the router went down halfway through my stay. it went out in the AM and the owner said he was too busy to fix it on the same day. One of the things I really needed was the internet and i told him that and all i got was "sorry". I should have gotten some sort of discount, not much I'm not gready, just something. The only real positve was the cabin was nice inside. read more

This is a very good spot to stay in Idyllwild. The location is ideal as you have the main touristy/shopping/eating areas easily within walking distance. There are also hiking trails not too far in several directions. The cabins themselves are comfortable, cozy, and well-priced. The service provided by the owners is personable and responsive. And, while everything worth doing is close at hand, it's still quiet and peaceful for those looking to escape. A little bit of something for everyone. read more

I would give The Fireside Inn 10 stars if I could. My fiancee and I stayed in the Pine Cone room from Jan. 25th - 28th, 2013. We both live and work in Southern California and our daily lives are hectic and stressful to say the least. We'd been talking for years about getting away to a mountain cabin and having a 'snow day'. I researched the accomodations in Idyllwild, which is a short drive from where we live. I looked online at every option, and The Fireside Inn looked like exactly what we wanted. We both have travelled the world and enjoyed first class resorts in nearly every corner of the Earth. The Fireside Inn ranks overall in our top five, easily. Larry is a perfect host. He welcomed us with a warm smile, explained how to carry the firewood to our room, and showed us the complimentary collection of great DVDs he had in the office that we could borrow. Then a wonderful thing happened: he left us alone, but was around if we needed anything. We enjoyed three days of cozy warmth without any bother at all. Our room had a full kitchen and every comfort we could have asked for. It was as if we had our own warm cabin far away from everything yet we were within easy walking distance of top-notch dining and shopping, and we got a 10% discount at Pam's store called "Wooley's." On our last day, we awoke to a fresh coat of snow that was the icing on the cake. We will be returning to The Fireside Inn as often as possible. Thumbs WAY up and BIG smiles!!! read more

FIRESIDE INN is THE place to stay. I fell in love with Idyllwild this last week and it's partly because of where I stayed. I stayed in the Warbler with just me and my dog. Everyday, 3 times a day, we'd walk among the pines and cabins on the little residential streets surrounding the cabin. Occasionally, a car would pass by and the driver would smile and wave. I was a little concerned about being a single lady, alone in a cabin, but that was quickly dismissed. I spent most of my time, either walking in the pines or sitting on the deck and just enjoying nature. I loved my cabin. It was really clean, and had everything I needed. The only thing it didn't have, was a mint on the pillow. :) The one thing I'd like to let people know is that some of Idyllwild is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Most of the cute little shops in town, open on Wednesdays. Even most of the restaurants are closed, All the little shops in town were fun to browse through. Check out Wooley's and the bakery, next to ARF. The water up there is really good. I could drink from the tap! ( you can't do that in San Juan Capistrano!) Pam and Larry are such neat people and they made it possible for me to enjoy my vacation completely. I'm definitely going back. I think I'll try it in the winter, next time.
