Went in for happy hour with my two friends. We were one of 3 tables, and the lady took 20 minutes to get us water. We looked pretty scrubby but all make alot of money and eat out probably twice a day and I think they wouldnt give us attention because we werent all dressed up and are young. The man kept calling us buddy, but we arent buddies and we are women so it was decently strange. The portions were not very big, I know its happy hour but 11 dollars for 4 over salted crackers and 1 grape and half a slice of apple is ridiculous. Won't be going back and if you go, make sure you are 30+and dressed to flaunt your money if you want to even be acknowledged. Side note-if u want any other sauces then what comes with it, forget it. We just found this place last weekend as we were wandering around NW 23rd... We stopped in because we saw they had a great big fireplace and since it was getting cold outside, we thought we'd give it a try. The seats by the fire were taken so we ended up at a table by the windows. Always fun to watch the characters walking by outside. Our server was a great guy; fun attitude, great personality, helped by making some suggestions for drinks and food. The drinks were delivered quite quickly and were de-lish. The flatbread we ordered was... well... kinda underwhelming. The crust was thin and crisp, and the toppings were great, it's just that there wasn't really any "flavor". We'll be back tho' because there is definitely a great vibe here and we saw lots of things on the menu to try next time. read more

I've visited Fireside for HH and lunch. The ambiance is great, a beautiful space. But as a local, living around the corner watching the ebbs and flows of NW 23rd, it's disappointing to have a place that magnitudes a snooty vibe, especially bartenders. Staff was also really slow on both occasions, at the bar and seated. We have great places in PDX that exemplifies fantastic food with fantastic service. I'd rather walk a few blocks to 23 Hoyt for better, friendlier service and great ambiance. read more

Came in for lunch, had immediate seating. The staff was very nice. Even with the small menu, I had difficulty deciding. Luckily I saw a French Dip walk across the way, making it an easy choice. I had the worst drinks here. I could have gotten better drinks at a dive bar. I ordered a Hemingway Daiquiri and that is not what I got. It tasted like lemon water. I wish I was exaggerating but I am not! My friend ordered a Moscow Mule and it was also very watered down and disgusting. I spent $9 on a very small glass of lemon water. It didn't even come in the proper glass. That may be nitpicky, but if it were good that would be immaterial, it was absolutely disgusting. I will never go there again for drinks, and I have no interest in the food. The menu looked quite uninteresting. read more

I'm upset about the below reviews because I'm a HUGE HUGE fan of this place. I've been twice now and both times the food was excellent! The service is typical Portland service ya know, not fake just there to work and get your order which is fine with me, because the food makes up for it. There was a group of us ordering food and drinks. The drinks were super delicious and different. I ordered the fried chickpeas which were amazing and completely mind blowing. I was not expecting such a delicious treat! I also am a vegetarian and never really have a great veggie burger anywhere but this place is doing something right. The veggie burger is AMAZING has tons of flavor and the muenster cheese they top it with is a perfect combination to the flavors mixed into the burger. I also ordered an egg on top and it was perfectly cooked and just MADE the burger. I want this burger everyday. So delicious. Everyone I was with ordered a burger and was completely satisfied and loved them! Will definitely go back and I think you should give it another chance, to the people who only gave them one star. read more

I finally made it onto NW 23rd on my way through Portland and stumbled into the Fireside for dinner. The ambiance was incredible with warm light and fine woodwork throughout. Giant open windows balanced the depth of the black walnut and dark finishes. We had excellent service and didn't feel rushed to leave, but encouraged to relax. This feels more like a friendly neighborhood/locals spot to me, the energy was lighthearted and social. I have eaten at a few spots in Portland where I felt like they needed my table and I should move on quickly, this wasn't the case at the Fireside. We had the tuna special, lamb kabob and chilled soup, all were very well done and balanced- not masked in sauce or heavy alterations. I am very particular about seafood and LOVED the delicate style and presentation. After chatting a bit with a server I learned more about their program of locally sourced & sustainable ingredients. I hope I have an opportunity to revisit. read more

Try this new place on 23rd with my sister and her husband visiting in town. The place is nicely decorated with wild lodge theme. Lots of old wood with modern flair. The food was great! We had lunch there next to the fire place. Tried the elk chili, grill vegetable plate, and hunter burger. They were delicious! Elk stew tasted more like a very tender cooked beef. The chili is great! Don't even like chili myself but it was wonderful. Grill vegetable plate was nice, too. Hunter burger is a must try. Go! You would like it. Taking my husband next time. read more

We stopped in for a small bite to eat while in Portland. We had a meatloaf sandwich that was delicious. We also had their pickled plate which included green strawberries, green beans, bread and butter pickles and boiled eggs with sea salt and paprika. Each pickled item tasted like it was pickled differently. Very good and unique, perhaps not for Portland, but definitely for a San Diegan. I wish we would catch on to the pickling phenomenon they have in Portland. Apparently there is a Portlandia episode that is "we can pickle that". I must see it now. read more

Great fun new place! Although the wait for a table was going to be 45 minutes, we got to sit at the very large, very cool, very comfortable...bar! No bar stools. Comfortable bar chairs. The fries were ok, nothing spectacular, but the portion was large. The flatbread mushroom pizza was delicious. The grilled lettuces were very tasty. Everyone was very nice and very helpful. They do need to work on the heat from the front fireplace. The hostess kept having to open the door for those sitting next to the fireplace. However, those of us at the bar froze! We will return! UPDATE: 8-12-2015 Hubby hadn't been so daughter, hubby, and I went tonight. Got seated right away at the lovely (empty) community table by the wonderful giant open windows on a perfect warm evening. Our peach toasted bread was tasteless. I figured since it's the height of local peach season it would be amazing. The cheese tasted like nothing, the bread was soggy and uncut. The peach slices were yummy, but it was too hard to cut and eat. Everything just slid off the soggy bread. It sure looked pretty when it arrived. Our flatbread came ice cold. The marinara tasted funny and was too spicy. Hardly any Mozzarella and a couple pieces of basil. Not good at all. They forgot my husband's toasted bread and didn't charge us for it. When it came there was hardly any butter and what there was was just slathered on the plate. They forgot his Radicchio caesar salad too. There were hardly any people in the restaurant, so who knows what happened but we will not be returning. The service was very very slow. I adore the space right on the corner smack dab in the middle of Nw23rd. Super trendy, and very Portlandia. The burger left a lot to be desired. It was dry and predictable. The best part of the meal were the handmade smores. The graham crackers and marshmallows were from scratch. Blew my mind! I would definitely come back, because based on the detail of that dessert, they take good care in what they serve. Maybe my hamburger had a bad day. Wonderful ambiance! The waitresses were really friendly about helping us choose the food and giving us their opinion on each dish. The bartender also great taste when it came to choosing drinks too. I recommend getting the grilled olives from their "snacks" part of the menu so simple, yet delicious! My boyfriend and I went to the Fireside on New Year's Eve and had a practically flawless experience. We weren't able to make reservations (only allowed for parties of 6 of more), but were only asked to wait for 10-15 minutes. We waited at their bar and had delicious drinks before being brought to our table. Throughout the shuffle from the hostess to the bartender to our server, we were treated with warmth and sincerity (even apology for the wait!). Dinner was beautifully presented and excellent. Had the best dinner here on Saturday night! Came in because we heard they were pouring on of our favorite organic Beaujolais village by the glass. The grilled Romaine was devilish and the steak mouth watering. We finished off with a pot-de-creme that was spot on, and trust me I know a good pot-de-creme when I taste one. The server was fun, enthusiastic and honest. I love it when a server can get down to the nitty gritty on whats hot and whats not on the menu. And to boot the bill was surprisingly affordable and correct. We will def be back! read more

My first visit was brunch on a rainy Sunday morning. We had a 10am reservation since we were 8 and heard it fills up, especially if the weather is fine and folks are out walking 23rd. Perhaps due to the weather the restaurant was lightly populated, but it did fill up completely before we left at noon. The atmosphere is outstanding: high ceilings and natural materials in full force, picture windows, and of course a dramatic fireplace. Our waitstaff was attentive and responsive. The menu? One page, and every option sounded incredible. All were fairly priced. I couldn't decide between the mushroom biscuit and gravy dish or the egg-asparagus-hash, so I got both--for the price of one breakfast at similar establishments. My young son had some sort of incredibly delicious pastry-pancake hybrid with a lemon sauce, and I would have eaten all of them if he weren't my child and needed to eat. Because the Fireside donates all their proceeds from one Sunday brunch per month to a local non-profit, and this month's was Project Lemonade, there were several lemon-themed dishes and a special rhubarb lemonade drink (I drank three--YUM). I love that they do that. No need to drop the name to your server--it's automatically donated from all the proceeds. So I felt really good about ordering two mains and three lemonades. And an extra plate of those pancake-pastry things. Fireside? A total package. That's saying a lot in Portland. read more

Our first impression was the ratty looking cloth napkins! I had rarely even noticed napkins before unless maybe they were shaped like a swan jammed into a crystal goblet. We were there for lunch. The omelette and side salad were OK. The Plowman's lunch was not. It had soupy chicken liver pate, a hard boiled egg that was only soft boiled and not appropriate to be served on a board, and - get this - pickled strawberries. The iced tea tasted fine but I wonder how they get it so cloudy unless it had sat out for too many hours. Our server was cheery and competent. There is a lot of competition in this area so the Fireside needs to sharpen up if they're to survive. $30 plus tip. read more

We frequent Fireside for weekend brunch. Never been in for lunch or dinner. Great service, delicious coffee cocktails, and great food. My favorite brunch item is the veggie hash and my husband's current favorite is the tartine. The decor is pleasant and the outdoor seating and open windows make it especially nice on pretty days. This place is our winter time Sunday happy hour spot with happy hour every day from 3:00pm to 5:30pm. We come here frequently, order the hot toddies and sit by the fireplace. The food is amazing too. Last visit, we had the soup and grilled cheese, the fried brussel sprouts, and the potato rosoti, all very tasty and filling. We have already been wowed by their dinner service many times, so we decided it was time to try their brunch. As of now they have my favorite eggs Benedicts in town. Their hollandaise sauce is just enough different that it sets them apart. My husband got a special with lamb that is supposed to make its way to the regular menu and it was also outstanding.
