One of the best restaurants in town and, as of summer 2022, one of the only restaurants in town. We came here on a busy Friday night after partially walking into town from the airport. The ambiance was great, the crowd was rowdy in the best way possible. All their beers on tap were local, from Haines Brewing. Why every town in Alaska isn't like this (local beer on tap at the local restaraunts), I have no idea. This should be the norm! Instead you'll often see something like Alaskan Amber, Bud Light, and Stella Artois. The pizza took a while to come out, 30-45min, but they were SWAMPED because of beerfest. When it finally did, it was very good. This is NY-ish style pizza. The emphasis is on really thin crust. This was a pretty good take on it! My only real complaint is that this dough/crust performs very, very poorly when eaten the next day. This is definitely EAT NOW pizza, not SAVE SOME FOR LATER pizza. read more

Had the choice of a a slice of pepperoni pizza for $5 at the fair or going out and exploring the town some. It was an hour before closing time at Fireweed but service was a little slow. I waited on an outdoor table and then ordered the pesto roll for $13 (same menu as posted on yelp here) with goat cheese (for an extra charge of $4). It took about half order for my order. The views were nice but it was a little chilly. The roll was a little bigger than I had pictured (unfortunately for me as I wasn't looking for leftovers) and came with a side of marinara. Maybe it was the combination of the mozzarella and parmesan, but the goat cheese was a bit overpowering and couldn't really taste much of the salmon. Left feeling like I made the wrong choice. Should've chosen the slice of pizza... Update: I was thinking about the roll afterwards and how satisfying it was, which is weird to not like it much while eating it and then like it afterwards. Pizza is tasty, but not so healthy. Very white dough. I had a stomachache after, so definitely not sourdough. Fresh mozzarella and tomato salad: mozzarella was excellent, tomatoes were pretty bad even though it's late July and they should be good this time of year. I like how they added greens to the dish. We ate here a few weeks ago. The pizza was fine, but the costumer service was pretty shady. I ordered a side of ranch with my pizza, and when my pizza came out I asked the server for the ranch that I ordered. They ended up bringing that ranch and another ranch. And they charged me for both sides of ranch which totaled $5. I then brought the bill to the counter and instead of saying "our bad, I'll take the ranch off the bill," the woman guilt tripped me and was very defensive about it saying that since I had both ranch dressings brought out to me, I should be charged. I had to really stand up for myself to take one ranch off the bill, which was so silly. With this as their business model, I would highly recommend not eating here. read more

I came here for lunch the day I was in Haines. It was recommended both by locals and my guidebook. I had a Greek Salad that was one of the best things I had on my trip. Get the large one--its still only about the size of a soup bowl. It came with crushed kalamata olives, fresh tomatoes, and a very nice not-too-salty feta. They don't serve whole Pizza's until 4:30, so I got some slices to go. The sausage was good with a fragrant herbal touch to it. The best was a broccoli and red onion pizza that I was skeptical of, but which was really good. The broccoli had been blanched and cut fine and the whole thing was delicious. They serve local beer and wine. The beer was great and perfect with pizza. I was told that the calzone is good as is the turkey sandwich. The menu is pretty eclectic, including fondue, but I would bet they make everything to the same high standards as the food I had. The address makes this place a little hard to find, but I'll try. Head up Portage Street from Beach Road and the Fireweed is located on a dirt road off to the right about halfway up the hill. Or just ask someone. read more

What an awesome place, with a great vibe and amazing pizza. We got a large pizza to go, but decided to have a pint of beer while waiting for our food to be ready. This was a good decision. Friendly staff pointed us in the direction of the brewmaster when we had questions about the local beers on tap, which was very convenient. The brewmaster was happy to tell us all about the beers that were available, so we saddled up to the bar and each got ourselves a tasty pint. Spruce Tip, I love you. The atmosphere was friendly and fun, with guests and staff smiling and chatting with each other, and warm welcomes to those that came in the door. I could have sat there all night if we didn't have a pizza to bring back to our other hungry friend. The open kitchen concept was cool, and the interior has a warm, inviting feel, with lots of wood and character. When our pizza was ready we were presented with a giant box. This pizza was huge! We had the Fireweed Special (I think...) which had pesto, sausage, spinach, feta, olives, and some other delicious stuff. The crust was thin, but flavourful, and not carboardesque, like many thin crusts can get. It was one of the best pizzas I have ever had. So good. If I ever get to come back to Haines, one of my first stops will be to the Fireweed. read more

We came to Fireweed for food and beer, and were not disappointed! I wasn't very hungry, so I had a couple of small plates- a bacon wrapped stuffed date, sitting in maple syrup (YUM!) and potato salad filled with fennel (another YUM!). Friends at the table had salads, pasta, fish, and pizza and all were satisfied. I tried several of the locally brewed beers on the menu, all of which were pretty tasty. If you are in Haines and in search of a tasty lunch or dinner, definitely think about stopping in at Fireweed! read more

This is one of the best restaurants in the country. I've had their pizza, buffalo burger, bacon wrap date, salad, and calzone. I like all of them. I'm from LA and have ate at a lot of places around the country and am pretty critical about my food. The food here is just great. I am also not much of a salad eater and their salad is amazing. If you're ever in Haines, AK, you have to try this place. I recommend the calzone. It's huge and amazing. read more

Recommended to us by our hostel owner, Tim (http://bearcreekcabinsalaska.com). Hopping joint on a Friday night, shoulder season (last Friday in August). Lots of locals. Loud. Be aware that there are two entrances (E and W) and the "check in" is at the bar, W entrance. So if you stand at the door on the east side, you could be standing a while. We opted out of pizza, unlike most tables around us. Looked good. Bacon-wrapped date was divine. But note: singular. Our food was quite tasty but serving was a trifle odd -- entrees (Grilled Flat Iron Steak) were served ON bread, as though they were an open-faced sandwich. Perhaps this is an Alaska thing? Dessert also divine. Wish there were a fresh seafood entree. read more

The only drawback I have is that it's busy and I usually have to wait for a table, but all that means is the food is excellent. My favorite is the Seared Stake Salad. read more

What a great place! Very lively, great staff and delicious food. My husband ordered the snap pea soup which was yummy. Our casear salads had a wonderful lemony dressing. I ordered the surf and turf-- iron steak and halibut with carrots and mustard potato salad as sides. Steak was tender and cooked perfectly. The halibut was a beautiful piece of fish. I absolutely love the Fireweed! For the longest time no restaurant in Haines served pizza that was worth paying for, so as soon as the Fireweed opened I ordered pizza with mushrooms on top, praying that our savior had arrived. And oh, had they ever. They use real mushrooms, none of that canned crap, and their sauce is to die for. Not too much cheese, not too greasy; it was heaven. So, of course, whenever I went there I would order pizza or a calzone (equally delicious, especially if you like your toppings more than your crust). However, I recently started branching out, and so far everything I've tried has lived up to the same standard. Their sandwiches are delicious (and filling; if you want soup and a salad as well, I'd recommend a half-hero, not a full), as are their salads. I never have room for dessert when I leave, but the cheesecake sure looks good heading to everyone else's tables. They also have local beer from the Haines Brewing Company on tap, though the selection is limited by what's in season. If you couldn't tell already, the Fireweed is one of my favorite restaurants in town, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting town (I'd recommend it to the locals as well, but I'm pretty sure they've all known about it for years by now). The only reason I've docked a star is that the wait for dinner can be ridiculously long if you come at the wrong time. I'd say go early if you don't think you can wait more than forty-five minutes for food. Also, if the front stairs look intimidating, there's another entrance around the back of the building that's much more easily-accessible. read more

The grill was not running the evening we were there, but the pizza was a huge hit, as was the fireweed salad.

This place was delicious! We were also starving, so that helped. The service was great, the local beer refreshing, and the pizza was awesome. We ordered the cheese dip/fondue thing as an appetizer and it hit the spot just right. I ordered the salmonberry cheesecake for dessert and it was much better than I would have expected. I had also never had salmonberry before, so that was a fun treat. Overall, I'm sure they get a healthy mix of tourists/locals here. The decor was nice and it was wholly entertaining to be there. I heard such great things about the Fireweed restaurant so I had to check it out. While the food was decent, I was very disappointed by the poor service. I was ignored for a long time while at the bar waiting to order. I received very little attention after I was able to order and at the end was handed my bill without a word. Not a "thank you for coming in" no "I hope everything was ok" not even a "hope to too you again." I'm was hoping that maybe they were busy, but it seemed many others received better customer service. I may try it again on a slower night and see what happens. If it's better, I will update my review. read more

It was a lovely evening in July, we had a nice drive to the restaurant and got a nice seat at the window. Our waitress was a little slow to get to us but was pleasant and lowered the shades for us from the glaring sun. We were offered drinks also slow to arrive, but we were not in a hurry. Finished drink round and bread finally arrived. Then we waited over an hour offered another round of drinks, waited 20 minutes longer, no one left in the restaurant. A busboy came by and we asked for our check. He didn't return. We left some cash for the drinks and left. There were three of us and we ordered salad and soup. This restaurant was recommended to my husband and me by the fellow who checked us into the B&B where we were staying. It was better than I expected, with a much more varied menu than the pizzaria I had been expecting. I ordered the halibut burger which was substantially bigger than the halibut burgers I have had elsewhere for the same price. I also ordered a pint of beer from the local brewery. I told the waitress I wanted a light beer. The one she brought was a bit hoppy for my taste but I managed to finish it. :) The burger came with a choice of salad. I opted for the green salad which consisted of organic greens, grape tomatoes, sliced onions, and apple slices. It was a pleasantly warm evening so we sat on the outdoor deck along with most of the other patrons. My only quibble is that the sandwich was messy to eat so it would have been good to have a cloth napkin instead of a paper one. read more

2 of us ordered dinner. Salmon and the surf and turf. Took about an hour to come out and we were hungry. They were understandably busy. After the food came out a waitress didn't come back for like 20 min. My steak was overcooked and the halibut was cooked less then rare on half of it. So I ate what I could and when a waitress finally came back, I showed her and she brought it to the owner. I was then told that because I kept eating that they wouldn't do anything. Polietely responding with the fact that I wouldn't eat half of my $45 entree I asked to speak with him. He came out and started yelling at me. I wasn't asking for a free meal but at least something to acknowledge the less than adequate meal. Hell if he was like let me get you a round of beers and a dessert I would have been thrilled. What did he do? Yelled in front of the whole restaurant and kicked us out saying the meal was on him. I took the high road and gave the waitress 50 bucks to pay for the rest of the meal and left. Unprofessional, arrogant owner didn't deserve that. read more

One thing that struck me about Haines, which is a fine town, is that most of the local businesses aim to serve locals rather than visitors. I felt it last year, and it was eminently clear this year. I can't bring myself to leave more than 2 stars. I'm in Haines each summer & always have dinner at the Fireweed... my husband & I went tonight for our 4 year anniversary. The food was pretty good, as usual, but the service was just terrible. We ordered a pizza & an appetizer, but 45 minutes went by and the waitress never checked on us one time, refilled a drink, nothing. Finally as our pizza came she informed us a mistake was made with our appetizer & they were making it now, then left before I could even mention I didn't think we'd need it anymore since our dinner was there. She didn't come near us again until she brought the appetizer, at which point I asked if she could just box it up right away. Instead she set it down & told us she'd bring us a box. That never happened, and she never came back to our table. Eventually another server came by & asked if we needed anything, brought us the box, foil for our pizza & our check. Pretty disappointing for a very special dinner. read more

Rarely does a single restaurant so out-do all other restaurants in any given town that there is really no reason to even try anything else. Alaska is expensive, yes. Every other restaurant in Haines seems to use this as an excuse to provide small portions of poor quality food to hungry, kitchenless tourists. This restaurant provides food at equal cost to the really disappointing restaurants/diners in town, but unlike all of them, it is actually a great value. Everything is fresh, tasty, and expertly prepared. Great calzones, pizzas, pasta, salads. All of their food would pass in any market in America. They have a small but adequate collection of beers on tap. Their servers are all charming and beautiful. They prove that their location is not an excuse to running a great restaurant. My only complaint is that they aren't open on Sundays or Mondays. I had to stoop to the Bamboo Room for lunch on a Sunday. That lunch, in combination with my dinner at the Fireweed the previous night, inspired this review. I can't wait for it to open again on Tuesday! read more

We were in Haines for several days and ate at the Fireweed several times. This seems to be a popular local restaurant. The food is good and the service is excellent. Their menu features only very creative dishes frequently with unusual ingredients. The food is a bit too creative for my taste. When you are in a place like Haines, you want wholesome simple American food; not some local attempt to emulate San Francisco cuisine. Unfortunately, most of the Haines restaurants seem to be trying too hard to be food fancy. We found Fireweed to be among the best of the local restaurants. Being Italian, I wish they could make a simple traditional pizza and not one with a dozen non-traditional Italian ingredients, which is an unfortunate all too common American attempt to bastardize Italian food. I asked if they could make me a simple cheese pizza, but was told no. How hard would that have been? I knocked star off for that lack of customer accommodation. read more
