Doing a bit of research as to what foods to try in Skagway, Klondike Doughboy was highly recommended. After completing the White Pass Yukon train excursion, we headed back into town. Shopped a bit as we made our way to Klondike Doughboy. It was around lunch time so I was surprised but super excited to see there was no line!! I was able to walk right up to the counter, order a doughboy, stepped to the right and was handed my order. Seemed like less than a minute. So although there was no line, i had noticed the staff continued to make the doughboys. I didn't understand it until a few minutes later, sitting across the street, enjoying the fried bread that people were making their way towards the shop and like that, there was a line out the door. We were super lucky. And yet, the line was moving pretty quickly because of the staff's expectations. Because there was no line, I didn't get a chance to shop the store. But it was super cute and they do have souvenirs for sale. They also sold drinks and shave ice, which I found strange for Alaska. But I get it now because Skagway, at 70 degrees is actually very warm if there are no clouds and no wind. I thought it was interesting to see people still drinking a can of Coca Cola with a surgary fried item. And yet, in Hawaii, there's a malasada stand next door to the shave ice truck. I should know better. Staff was super friendly along with the unexpected quick service. Almost forgot, the fried bread is big, like a 12" size pizza. It was just me and my sister and so we split it. I liked it and liken it to a flat malasada from Leonord's bakery in HI. Would be interesting if they made filled fried bread. But if they did, I didn't get a chance to browse the menu because I wanted to get in and out of there. Also, I thought it was fairly priced at $8 because of the size of the fried bread which I equated to four malasadas that sell for $2.25 each. So do I recommend Klondike Doughboy? Absolutely and plan to revisit on a future cruise. read more

A must try when in Skagway! I've heard so many good things about this place when doing research about things to do on an Alaska cruise. This did not disappoint. The line is pretty long but I promise it goes super fast considering they only sell 1 thing. While in line we made friends with the person in back of us in line who was on the same cruise as us. Once at the front, we got 1 giant fry bread covered in cinnamon and sugar for $8. My daughter noticed a bunch of ducks displayed behind the cash register and asked if she could have one. As I was telling her no, the cashier pulled out a duck and asked if she could give it to her. She was so happy! It made her whole day. (If you didn't know, finding ducks on cruise ships is a big thing!) The fry bread was delicious! I love that they're made to order so you know it's going to be fresh! It kind of tasted like a cinnamon bagel chip like the ones you can get in Las Vegas! (IYKYK!) But, it was a bit thicker. It was super messy with crumbs and cinnamon sugar going everywhere. This well known Alaskan treasure is a small little shop in downtown Skagway. The well known doughboy is definitely worth it. It's tasty and is one of those things you have to try if you're in the area. It's $8 and is a little bit more priced than what it may be but it's definitely worth it to get it. Most people find themselves in Skagway via cruise ship. If you find yourself in this situation and are wanting a sweet snack, disembark the boat with the first group and hightail it to the corner of Broadway and 3rd Avenue. Don't stop at any of the many souvenir shops or jewelry stores. The priority will be getting to Klondike Doughboy first, since this will be the longest line you will see all day. Even if you meander through town, don't worry: the line goes quick. Once inside the door, queue up to the left side of the store, order at the counter, then pick up your fresh doughboy to the right side of the store. There are also various other gifts and merch available, as well as shaved ice during any warm days, but the star of the show is the fried doughboy. On my initial stop around 10 AM, the line was quite long. My wife went to get drinks at the coffee shop next door while I waited for the doughboy. When I got to the front, I order one to share with my wife, promptly got took it outside, but my wife was still waiting for our drinks. I sat down on the sidewalk (there are only a few benches outside) and quickly ate my half of the doughboy while it was still hot. I easily could have devoured the entire thing, but I was a good husband and saved half for my better half, who eventually came out with our hot drinks. We stayed in Skagway for the entire day, going on a long hike to the Lower Reid Falls (about a 5 mile trek round trip), getting a late lunch in town, then the requisite tourist shopping. But before we got back on our cruise ship, we made one last stop around 5 PM. By that time, most of the tourists got back on their respective boats, so the line was very short. This time, we got our own doughboys (no sharing). I would have gone back for a 3rd trip if they were open late (they closed at 6 PM), though I would risk being left behind. On our visit to Skagway, we wondered why there was a huge line out the door to this place. A place serving frybread? We're in! They crank out the frybread so swiftly that even with a line out the door, everything moves quickly and we were in and out within ten minutes. Doughboy ($8) - This is a huge piece of fried dough, easily larger than my face. It's an interesting decision to have a thicker diameter, probably 3/4 inch thick, and a much thinner interior. It's almost like pizza in construction. This makes it so that the crustier portions are soft and chewy while the inner area is crisped up to perfection. An uneven fry is expected, but I feel as a whole, the frybread might be a bit underfried. The crust area, in particular, is soft and chewy without any crispness and has an almost raw flour-like taste to it. At least the entire thing is dusted with cinnamon and sugar to make it a sweet treat! (4/5) This frybread has some weaknesses, but hey, even a weak frybread is a good frybread.
