We weren't there for a typical meal, we did a culinary and Alaskan gardening class. These two things happen to be my all time favorite pass times. I learned so much from nearly every staff member I came into contact with. Their pastry chef taught us so much about bread making and the science behind it and was incredibly knowledgeable. The in house gardener (yes they have one of those!) grows ingredients on site to help supplement food costs and she taught us so much about how climate impacts the plants she grows. (Their rhubarb was gigantic) everything we ate was off the charts amazing! If I had to give a negative comment it would be that the manager seemed inconvenienced by the guests and made sure to tell us that we were keeping him from his busy day, but to be fair he said he isn't usually the one who gives guest presentations so I have to give him props for doing it even when he clearly had other things to do. It was a short wait for the dinning room but they had a pub setting which had a limited menu. The beer was interesting, had an evergreen taste which was good and I was glad I tried it. We tried the loaded fries which was very good. I had the king crab which I had to eat fresh while in Alaska and my wife had the grilled chicken sandwich. There was plenty of food and we did not leave hungry. Our sever did a great job checking up on us.

Shopped a bit as we made our way to Klondike Doughboy. It was around lunch time so I was surprised but super excited to see there was no line!! I was able to walk right up to the counter, order a doughboy, stepped to the right and was handed my order. Seemed like less than a minute. So although there was no line, i had noticed the staff continued to make the doughboys. I didn't understand it until a few minutes later, sitting across the street, enjoying the fried bread that people were making their way towards the shop and like that, there was a line out the door. We were super lucky. And yet, the line was moving pretty quickly because of the staff's expectations. Because there was no line, I didn't get a chance to shop the store. But it was super cute and they do have souvenirs for sale. They also sold drinks and shave ice, which I found strange for Alaska. But I get it now because Skagway, at 70 degrees is actually very warm if there are no clouds and no wind. I thought it was interesting to see people still drinking a can of Coca Cola with a surgary fried item. And yet, in Hawaii, there's a malasada stand next door to the shave ice truck. I should know better. Staff was super friendly along with the unexpected quick service. Almost forgot, the fried bread is big, like a 12" size pizza. It was just me and my sister and so we split it. I liked it and liken it to a flat malasada from Leonord's bakery in HI. Would be interesting if they made filled fried bread. But if they did, I didn't get a chance to browse the menu because I wanted to get in and out of there. A new food truck that just opened in time for this year's cruise season, Alaskan Bear Bread offers 3 different choices, the OG polar bear with just powdered sugar, the cinnamon sugar Grizzly Bear, and the Chili Bear topped with beef chili. For me, it was the OG that I was looking for as simple is often the best. For those who have never had fried bread, it is similar to a beignet but not as hollow. With it so close to the cruise port, gotta try this specialty.
