In my case, a faulty water heater needing to be replaced. The Good: incredibly responsive, tried to troubleshoot over the phone and worked to visit the immediate next day. The (Real) Bad: they price gouged me in a time of peril. Unacceptable. Knowing I was up against the ropes, they charged me what was nearly 3.5 times a normal charge for a water heater replacement! I asked for them to be more accommodating on the quote but came back with 'nothing we can do'. I guess they assumed I'd pay that exorbinant price. I didn't. I got quotes from two other responsive plumbers which proved Plumbing Department was attempting to gouge me. I'm glad I went elsewhere. It's a shame they have such speedy, friendly initial support, but followed it with egregious quotes. Hope they can do better in the future. UPDATE: spoke with owner, Jeff, to discuss the experience. To provide further details underscoring the notable pricepoint disparity: Plumbing Department - install Bradford White water heater with licensed, bonded and insured company Other Plumber Quotes at 3-3.5x less - install a Rheems Performance water heater from licensed, bonded, and insured company. I have no qualms with how Jeff chooses to operate and appreciated their initial support, but found the pricepoints for the install, at a moment of peril, arresting and glad I didn't settle with what was clearly an elevated pricepoint. I reached out to my brother-in-law, who does plumbing, and he said it was a fair amount. Still, he lives in another state and wanted a second opinion here in Chicago. I found VanderBosch because they ranked high on Google when I asked about the job. Actually, they had a whole blog post about the service and I learned a lot. Jordan called me back and let me run down the whole project and told me what they would charge. I walked away from the conversation really wanting to give the job to VanderBosch, but Jordan is a straight-shooter and told me that they couldn't finish the job as fast as his competitor (for boring, but significant reasons). So, this competitor to the initial company took the time to call me back, listen to my issue, give me the straight facts, and all because he was so focused on the well-being of a potential customer that in the end, couldn't even book his company. Why can't everybody be like this? This is some real "city of big shoulder" stuff from a Chicago-based company. In the end, I wasn't able to hire VanDerBosch, but they have a down payment on a future customer.

Tom has zero customer service skills and Luka has all the charm of a Stazi agent. Tom ghosted me on a straight forward task (changing a water heater anode) even though I gave them weeks notice and told them it wasn't urgent and could be rescheduled if they had emergencies. He sent the Latino men to do other tasks that I scheduled. I'm sick of his attitude and will be finding another plumber. Their prices are not better than other plumbers.

Tradesmen are notoriously hard to reach and communication is difficult - understandably so - they always have their hands full. Splash was exceptional. Not only did they text me back right away, they got someone out to replace my old toilet within an hour! (I had been waiting over a week for my building staff to do it..) I planned ahead and had all the equipment ready to go which helped a great deal, but their responsiveness and willingness to take care of my problem promptly sets them above the rest. They showed up on time, took care of the job and cleaned up afterwards. All in all, a great experience and they were extremely helpful navigating a difficult building yet making the process painless. They…read morefound multiple issues and said the equipment was too old and they needed to replace both of them. They quoted us $5k and some additional cost to check the HVAC while they were there. The HVAC check seemed like everything was fine, but they used it as a sales op to try and sell me new furnace and humidifier, which was working fine at the time (and continues to function 4 years later). Thankfully their 1-year VIP service was the most valuable part of it, because one of the joins for the new water heaters started leaking again almost 12 months later. However, when they came out, they couldn't get the water main to close in our unit, so they quoted me to replace it as an additional cost instead. We said no, and gradually loosened the water main valve to the point where we could get it to close. We believe it was debris from the water main for the building being shut off multiple times for other work recently. Once we resolved that issue, we were able to get them to actually repair their failing original work at no cost. Not sure I would recommend.
