The food here is good. I will give them that. But good food doesn't give ANY restaurant a reason to treat their customers poorly. After years of patronage here, the service tonight was absolutely terrible, and as a result, I'm never coming back. The waitress was terribly rude to my father by straight up asking for a bigger tip after he had already included a tip in paying the bill. I threw in an extra $10 to quickly end the embarrassing situation, but never in my life have I seen a server treat a customer like that. I've been coming here for the past 20+ years. I've literally grown up with them. Beat roast duck in Dallas. Not Peking duck, so if you're looking for that, this isn't it. All their meats on the right when you walk in is delicious. My favorite dishes are the beef flat noodles and the wonton duck noodle soup. Their noodles are always perfect. Everyone knows they're cash only, it's always been that way. We find this location to be the best out of all of them. My first few months in Dallas, I found the c-town area on Greenville in Richardson. I was working my way through various Chinese restaurants in search of my "go to" Chinese spot. One day, while I was content just sipping on my taro milk tea at the boba place in the same plaza as First Chinese, I noticed a couple of people wheeling out a whole roast suckling pig out to the back of some guy's car. Holy roast pig Batman! I tossed aside my boba and ran outside to get a better glimpse. Anyplace that serves up whole roast suckling pig I gotta check out. It was early for dinner, about 4pm, but I went two doors down to First Chinese. The first good sign of any decent Chinese place? It's own duck and pork holding rack. Go to any respectable Chinese joint in Monterey Park or Flushing and you'll see these delectable delights hanging from their window. It's like their calling card - nuff said. The interior is actually a lot cleaner and more pleasant than many Chinese dives I've visited. I could bring my parents here or even a date. I've brought a posse of 20 something people here with no reservations on a busy weekend and we usually all get seated in 5 minutes or less so I'd even recommend for larger groups. Bring the rents, cousins, ex girlfriends, mechanic... The food is awesome. I would rate it on par with the Chinese food you'd expect to get from LA, SF, or NYC. I dined here last Saturday with my wine group (14 of us). I was initially a bit concerned because this restaurant does not take reservations. We were fortunate to not have a wait when we arrived at 6pm. We were there over two hours, and no one rushed us. The staff was VERY accommodating! The restaurant was so gracious to our large group. They split the checks which was really nice! If you come here with wine, be sure to bring your own glasses because they don't provide them. When you are leaving, and a little tipsy, be sure to remember to take your glass home! Sugar Bear and I started by splitting the shrimp wonton soup. The broth was absolutely delicious and the wontons each contained a plump, beautiful shrimp! This may be one of my favorite soups ever! For my entree, I had the BBQ duck and pork plate. The meats were accompanied by steamed rice served family style. This plate was enough for three people! It was gigantic! The meats were quite flavorful, perfectly cooked and really nice with wine. Sugar Bear had the beef with soft noodles. I swear to you it was served on a turkey platter! HUGE amount of food! It was really delish, and that is from a man who dislikes Asian cuisine. He was initially put off by this restaurant choice. After eating here, it is on his list of places to return for menu exploration. WOW! The best part...our bill! Our meal was $22.50. No lie! I've never seen so much food at such a cheap price! Some of our friends ordered more 'Americanized' dishes. I took a bite of the orange chicken, and I have to say it was the BEST orange chicken I've ever tried! It was super spicy, so that is probably why I liked it so much. I love that this place is BYOB! Deceased, crisp, and shiny ducks radiate under a red warming light as I enter First Chinese BBQ. On my left is a small dining area with a few families tending to their feast like vultures. Their arms were flat on the table protecting their plates like prisoners in the chow hall, with one beady eye warning others to stay back. On my right is the duck, chicken, and pig head warming display case for all to witness. I thought nuclear fallout and geiger counter as I peered into the glass emanating the glistening reflection of glazed, fatty ducks hanging on metal hooks. I wondered if they knew how much their sacrifice has added to the richness of the lives of those who entered this hallowed place of avian/piggie worship. Every item I ordered was fantastic, including the lemon grass ribs, salted chicken, bbq pork and duck. Even my fickle 1.9 year old niece ravaged like a baby barbarian on duck meat pulled from the duck bone, something I would have never liked when I was her age. She eerily stared at me without blinking and kept chanting "duck, duck" when her hands and mouth were empty, besides the sticky duck grease on her fingers. She only can say maybe 8 words at most and duck was her favorite word that night. She terrified me! The ribs had a spicy lemon grass taste and the meat was plentiful on the bone. Beware of the bones in the duck and chicken meat. Portion sizes were good for the prices. This place would have received a 5 star rating, but the front desk representative was as tactful as Scrooge in a traffic jam. I met up with some of my fellow yelpers at First Chinese BBQ for a UYE dinner (because I'm so sentimental I'm making my first UYE my 100th review. . .shit, now I'm getting all misty-eyed). After spending the previous week staring at the menu online trying to decide what I wanted, I quickly realized I had no clue what I wanted as I watched delicious plate after delicious plate be served to tables around us. Thankfully there were 14 of us and family style eating was the name of the game. With so many options on the menu, this is definitely the way to go. I ended up with the BBQ duck, pork and chicken dish. Cuts of all three meats served with rice and veggies for $6.50. Are you kidding me? For that price anywhere else you aren't going to get duck and more than likely not going to get more than a couple slices of chicken or pork. Not at First Chinese. The duck was incredibly flavorful and very rich. The pork had a nice smokiness to it and a little bit of a char that made it even better. I can't vouch for the chicken because it didn't make the rotation around the table back to me, but I heard good things. My other favorites that I tried were the beef flat noodle, the monster plate of baby bok choy and the szechuan chicken. Other standards like sesame chicken and orange chicken were also on the table and tasted as good as they would anywhere else. The specials on the wall were in (I'm assuming) Chinese so I have absolutely no idea what they were, but I'll assume they were fairly exotic treats. The service was pretty good, too. We had at least 3 different servers filling up our drinks at a time. Now, you're probably thinking "Sounds good, Joe, but what really makes this place so much better than other Chinese restaurants." I really hate writing bad reviews. I LIKE TO LIKE places. That's what Yelp is for - discovering great, hidden places. This place I will not go back to for these reasons: - gangster looking asian dudes smoking in the front like they owned the place (I stayed in my car until they left) - upon walking in, not friendly - doesn't accept credit cards (something I usually forgive if the cashier is nice about it) - I told them I want to dine in but they thought I was ordering to-go - rude waitress, threw my food in front of me and slammed my water on the table like I was a pig - waitress sounded like she was talking loudly about me in Chinese - beef flat noodles were way greasy - tried to be sweet when she handed over my check I really hate writing reviews like this but people just gotta know. When it's good, it's good! When it's bad, it's bad. Doesn't help that I drove 20 mins out of my way for horrible customer service. OH YEAH BTW, they had the nerve to tell me to tip!! My wife had been here and just raved about the won ton soup We had not been able to work it out until today to get back there so that I could also taste the wonderful selections on their menu. Upon entering the restaurant the dining room was packed with Asians and all kinds of wonderful looking dining selections on the tables our hopes for dining bliss were going through the roof. That is where our hopes went south really fast. We were pointed to a table for us to sit at by one of the waitresses and as busy as it was that was not so bad. It took forever ( at least 5 minutes ) for anyone to come to our table with menu's and take our drink order. After looking over the menu we decided on the won ton soup, Szechuan Chicken and what we were told was the restaurant's most popular dish, the BBQ pork and roast duck. We got our drinks and then the wait began... After about another 10 minutes we got the Szechuan chicken (sans rice to put it on ), then a different trip from our waitress brought out the won ton soup, then the bowl with our steamed rice. The won ton soup was a flavorful broth with dim sum noodles floating throughout the broth ( a portion fit for 2-3 with about 10 dumplings). I normally don't like won ton but I would go back to have this offering. The Szechuan chicken was full of meat, crisp veggies and a sauce that was among some of the best that I have ever had. Several other tables around us that came in and were seated after us were already getting different entree's and were enjoying some great looking crispy noodle dishes. We finally saw and were able to flag down our waitress and asked about our BBQ pork and roast duck that we did not have yet. She told us that it would be right out. About that time the table that sat down about 15 minutes after us got a heaping plate of BBQ pork and roast duck. By this time we had had enough of the bad service and decided to leave. After trying to find our waitress and get some to go boxes and our check we cancelled the pork and duck that I was looking forward to trying. If you are willing to overlook the slow service and what seems to be a preference for Asians then this is a great place with wonderful food but if you are a non -Asian then you might want to pass this restaurant by and go to any of the many other places in the area for similar offerings with better service. read more

This may the most vexing restaurant in Dallas. I always start with shrimp won ton soup and then the problems begin. The menu lists easily a hundred items and you will get no help from your server. There are items written on the wall, I assume in Chinese. No one will translate them and best you will get is that they are already on the menu. Today I walked past single employee , eating an employee meal at the circular table in the center of the room. There was a platter of delicious looking pork at this table as well as a sumptuous greens, tofu and pork soup. I asked the server for that dish. The server pretended ignorance. I took her to the platter so there could be no mistake about what I was trying to order. No dice, no way, not on the menu, not for sale. I surrendered for a plate of pork lo mein. I would love to go back with someone who knows Chinese food and speaks the 1st Chinese BBQ dialect. I would gladly pay for the translator's dinner. I would throw in a take-out chicken or duck. I suspect with such a food oriented, Chinese fluent guide I would discover meals like those shown on Eat Drink Man Woman. If anyone out there has these skills and does not mind dining with strangers, contact me. For the rest of the Dallas populace, enjoy your visit and do not bothering trying to stray from the menu. I thought it did at first while I was eating it, but then I got a weirdly textured piece of sesame chicken (grisly/weirdness) and that kind of ruined it for me. Richardson, TX is home to some of the arguably best Chinese food outside of the countries more famous "China Towns." And although the types of cuisine in this area are mainly ethnic, there's as many restaurants per block as uptown Dallas, second only to the astonishing number of foot massage and acupuncture spas. But with options comes competition, including the well known Kirin Court, just a few steps down the street, and this establishment didn't measure up in either service or food. Entering the restaurant is like walking in half-way through your family's huge Thanksgiving dinner- chaotic, loud, babies crying, more people at the table than actual spots, napkins on the floor, you get the picture. There seems to be some discrepancy among the service offered to American verses Asian patriots, this is due in part to the fact that the restaurant is set-up to accommodate non-english speaking customers, which is commendable, since it's goal is to serve a large, non-english speaking community in this area. However, a smile is understood by all languages and there weren't any cast in our direction. Of the three dishes we ordered, none were notable. I'll take the blame there, goodness knows I had no idea what to order and there's only a few hundred items on the menu haha. I am a wonton soup connoisseur. I have traveled far and wide to get good wonton soup (the best yet strangely being at Banana Leaf Malaysian in Philadelphia) and I'm not talking about those thick rubbery mystery meat filled grosseries you get in Americanized Chinese places. Oh no. Paper thin delicate wrappers, succulent chunks of meaty filling, hearty marrow soaked broth and hopefully some tasty vegetables floating in there. That's what I'm on the constant lookout for, and First Chinese BBQ consistently delivers. I order the shrimp filled wonton soup (no noodles), add kai lan (Chinese broccoli) and BBQ pork. It's a hearty meal, comforting and warming, although not too heavy when it's hot outdoors (aka, every month except January in Texas). Their other dishes are pretty amazing, too- the BBQ pork/duck are fantastic over perfectly cooked white rice, beef flat noodles with black bean sauce, szechuan eggplant and crispy tofu being some of my personal favorites. It's the small, non-descript places that usually have the best food. First Chinese BBQ fits that bill to the T as it's tucked away in the corner of a strip mall that you'd most likely miss if you didn't keep an eye out. But as soon as you walk in, you'll know you're in the right place as you'll see casting call rejects of the Aflac commercials hanging out getting a quick tan. I usually eat here once every 2 or three months as any more would cause a significant increase in belt size since everything I've tried has been delicious. This is the place where Asians go when they want good Chinese food. It's the best in Dallas. Even CNN recognized this in their article- 50 best Chinese restaurants in the United States- written this past March. I've been eating here since I was a child. The place is always filled and, oftentimes, there is a wait during dinner time. Make sure you have cash because credit cards are not accepted. Some of my favorite things to order are crispy egg noodle with beef or seafood, crispy shrimp (it is the foshizzle), Hong Kong style shrimp, sauteed water spinach, crispy chicken, and shrimp fried rice. Actually, the crispy noodle is required any time we eat here. Then, when you are done eating, you can stop by Boba Latte, right next door, and have a bubble tea for dessert. Being a Chinese guy (albeit born in the US), I have a pretty high standard for Chinese food. We normally don't eat at Chinese restaurants because my mother-in-law (Taiwanese) cooks a multicourse dinner for the entire family every Sunday. It's hard to beat her food. It's much healthier, better prepared and equally as tasty as the best Chinese joints in DFW. When we do get the penchant to go out for some honest and delicious Chinese food , 1st BBQ makes the immediate short list. The food is authentic enough for Asians (whole roasted ducks hanging by their necks will greet you as you enter the place) and hardcore Oriental foodies, but there are also dishes for more conservative diners that aren't as experienced with Chinese cuisine. Be warned that the cooks definitely have large containers of cooking oil, salt, and MSG as part of their 'mise en place'. However, if you are counting calories, bring an abacus, but know that they will not go wasted on the food here. The food is Cantonese style so you will get classics like wonton soup, lo mein, fried noodles, flat noodles, and an assortment of BBQ'ed meats (duck, chicken and pork). You can get basic fried rice or kick it up a notch by adding morsels of salted fish. Go with a big group so you can order a bunch of dishes to eat family style and share. It's relatively clean for a restaurant in Chinatown, but the obligatory layer of grease that covers all surfaces proves that you are in an authentic Chinese joint. read more

The BBQ pork (Char Siu, or Xa Xiu) was just acceptable, and the pan fried noodles with seafood were a bit of a disappointment ( overcooked squid and canned mushrooms) The roast duck and the szechwan eggplant were both good, but not up to the level of a sam woo, or even a good 99 Ranch. Ask me in 2 years and I'll probably be raving about this place, but let's just say it's not up to the best that millbrae and monterey park have to offer The other thing that surprised me was that it was impossible to order off the menu. Understandable, but usually you can just ask for combinations of what they offer and they can make it happen ( like say, squid with chinese broccoli in garlic sauce). This leads me to believe that a lot of the food is premade and in big pots in the back; either that, or my ordering kung fu has been bested. All in all this satisfied a big craving, but I'm still on the lookout. read more
