We went for lunch service on a Friday. It was decently busy, but I only saw 2 handling all the tables. Because of that, a lot of the dishes were borderline cold or overcooked, which impacted the texture. I always forget about this small unassuming spot, but whenever I find the time to go, I'm always reminded of how good their food is. During the day I love ordering from their dim sum menu when I want more variety. I like to take my family in the evenings and order their actual dishes. It's one of the few spots that seasons their food perfectly to our tastebuds. Their portions are also very large and meant to be shared family-style. My go to Dim Sum place when I'm back in town. It's your standard walk in, point the amount of fingers of seats you need, sit down, and point at the dish you want. The food is good in terms of the price ratio. Either $30-35 for 2 people or $50-60 for 3 people. I don't speak Chinese. I point. Occasionally one person might speak viet and that's good enough for me. There's a good variety. You'll get pretty much everything you find at other dim sum. Not sure why there's low reviews. We ordered online for pickup and everything was ready right when I walked in the door. I didn't even say my name and the bag was in my hand. We got the 2 meat bbq combo, you choose (bbq pork and roast pork). It comes with sauce but I thought it was seasoned well already and didn't need to use it at all. We also got con xin cai or hollow heart vege or water spinach. Originally ordered pea tips but they ran out and graciously called me to ask if it was ok to replace with water spinach, OH YEAH! Love water spinach sauteed in garlic. To go with our bbq we also got beef flat noodle, it's a classic dish and they did it right. That was the first dish to disappear once we got home. Another place that is just like Golden Joy is called First Chinese BBQ and I've been going to First BBQ restaurant for about 5 years. They serve pretty much the same food with same prices and are a couple miles close. The only difference is that First BBQ is cleaner. Golden Joy also serves Dim Sum and the restaurant is also bigger then First BBQ. First Chinese BBQ is better in my opinion because it's cleaner and I've been going there longer. The service is only ok and the dishes are sometimes dirty and the whole restaurant is dirty as well. Your at a Chinese restaurant so the service is only ok here something Authentic Chinese restaurants have in common. The food at Golden Joy is pretty good, everything is tender and has a pretty good taste and portion. The things I recommend is the duck, Beef flat noodle, Chicken chow mien, Soft Egg white with sauce, and Red Bean sesame mochi. This fried red bean mochi dish is one of the best I've Ever had because it was fresh out of the frier warm and the sesame seeds turned crunchy. Overall this place is one of the authentic Chinese restaurant in Dallas. For other Cantonese family style restaurants in Dallas are The Pearl in Grand Prairie, First Chinese BBQ Plano, A1 in Carrollton, Golden Joy in Richardson, Sun Lok Kee Plano, Golden BBQ in Arlington and Garden restaurant in Garland. I feel like good dim sum places are hard to come by in the DFW area. We've been to a few and only this one and Kirin Court has good food. SERVICE: 3/5 We came on a Monday afternoon and while we were seated right away, service was slow at the beginning. There were really only two waitresses and they were clearly understaffed. We never got our water but we did get tea when we ordered it. And it was refilled promptly when I left the lid open to signal to them it needed more water. There were no carts so we marked down our order on paper. Once we got our order in, it took maybe 15-20 minutes for our food to start coming out. There was one waitress constantly clearing tables and another one coming out with food. They had a steady flow of people coming in and going at all times but it never got anywhere near as full as Kirin Court. FOOD: 4/5 My all time favorite are Cheung fun/rice pastes. We tried the shrimp and beef ones and preferred the beef more. The Cheung fun itself was a little thicker than I'd like but still good! Shrimp balls are meh. Beef balls were steamed to perfection but missing the bean curd skin which was disappointing because it had it in the pic. I was surprised that they had Sang Tseen Bun which I loved when I visited Hong Kong but they didn't pan fry it enough. The star was definitely the Ham Sui Gok which I think they called it the Football dumpling. They're fried glutinous dumplings with meat filling and they're the best I've had! The tables in the main dining room was a little sticky and the condiment containers was dirty. The men's restroom has a smell and floor was dirty and sticky. The BBQ station glass had baked on grease, like that hadn't clean the glass in months and the food hanging looks very old. All restaurants has to display the Health Inspection score. First time trying this place. I same in after the Sunday rush, around 1pm, and they weren't busy at all. All my items were warm and fresh, except one, which was kinda cold. One item I wanted, wasn't on any of the carts, but they happily made me one. Quality was comparable to Kirin, but of course Dim Sum quality is very subjective, based on personal preference. I liked the Char Siu fun roll better at Kirin, but I like the Shark Fin shaped dumpling here more. I feel the items were a little smaller than Kirin, but everything was a good deal cheaper... Good Chinese food is hard to find in Dallas, so I decided to give this place a try. 5 years later and I still enjoy this restaurant as much as I did in the first day. They offer dim sum, they use the carts for dim sum on the weekends. They even have the lazy Susan on some of the tables, to assist with passing items for large parties. They have a fully cooked BBQ pig behind a display case along with roasted ducks, tripe and chickens. Their fried rice is the best and they give you a nice portion. They don't put onions in their rice so that's a plus. We typically get the orange chicken as well. The orange chicken is pretty good. There's a subtle sweetness to it. It's not sugar on sugar, which is a good thing. Sometimes we order the roasted duck or Peking duck. Both are flavorful. The Peking duck is a little more greasy than the roasted duck. If you like duck, then you know, duck will typically be greasy. The Peking duck does differ from the roasted duck in taste, due to the process of making Peking items. So do r just think it's the same duck, with two different names. The only reason this place isn't five stars is due to to the decor. But I don't go to golden joy for decor, I go for the authentic fare.
