But the Eater review of Chong Qing Lao Zao absolutely nails it. * * * Eater sez: Fans start lining up well before the wooden doors swing open at noon, eventually to walk through corridors that lead them to a bi-level dining area that evokes an old Chinese village, complete with a water wheel, koi, and a faux fire at the foot of each table. One private section is elevated on stilts. Chongqing Lao Zao stands out from the high concentration of nearby hot pot spots -- Hai Di Lao, Liuyishou, 99 Favor Taste. * * * Samuel C sez: a) Like many hot pot restaurants, there are lots of exotic ingredients including all parts of many animals. I did lots of those included thousand layer tripe and beef liver coated in egg. At this restaurant, simple is actually better than exotic. The most famous boiling oil (there are nine to choose from) is a scorchingly hot Chongqing drowning in hot peppers concoction. The oil is hot as blazes in both senses of the word. The simpler the ingredient we put in the oil, the better the results were. Plain old Chinese Cabbage was to die for. Plain old ramen noodles and plain old fish cake became superstars in the hot oil. Thousand layer tripe, not so much. b) Shiitakes are not such a plain ingredient. They become ultimate gourmet delights in the hot oil. c) All the tables around us were ordering some form of Wagyu beef roll. Or rather all the Chinese tables were ordering Wagyu beef rolls. The Anglos were more random. I suspect the Chinese customers were on to something. d) It is tempting to order tons and tons and tons of ingredients for your hotpot because they look so damm good. In practice, three hot pot dipping items per person plus a side dish for the table will leave you waddling out of the restaurant barely able to walk. If that means you just have to come here multiple times to get all the good stuff, Well ... multiple times is not such a dumb idea. e) You definitely want at least one side dish. We ordered a Fried Sesame Bread with Chinese green onions inside. That was the best thing on the table ... On a day when there were a zillion amazing things on the table. The Chinese tables often ordered a fried rice with spicy organs inside. I strongly suspect that fried rice is well worth doing as well. f) They make their own rice wine which is sweet and very milky. They sell it by the jar. You want a whole jar of it. If your table has sake lovers in multiple, you will want several jars of it. g) The room decoration is magical between the sturdy oaken village-gate door, to the waterwheel inside to the stairs and levels and platforms which make you feel like you are in a mountain village. The room would have made this a destination experience even if the food had been mediocre. That the raw ingredients, the prepared dishes, the wine and the boiling oil were amazing sends Chong Qing Lao Zao over the top. * * * Does Yelp offer an eight star rating? If it starts one, Chong Qing Lao Zao would be first in line to get the eight star rating. Even with all the amazing restaurants in Flushing's Chinatown, This is one experience you do not want to miss.

We choose to sit on the tatami mats, so shoes come off. The tell you to go get your sauces, but don't tell you that there's a $2 charge for them. We got the meeting spicy broth and the mushroom broth. The spicy broth was covered completely in dried red peppers. It definitely infused the food with spice. The broth themselves weren't amazing. They were fine. Their homemade rice wine on the other hand is absolutely delicious. I would go back for that alone. Their snacks, the fried broad beans, and seeds were very good. The cabbage was also delicious and fresh. The duck tongue was absolutely delicious, as were the beef balls. All the mushrooms were very good. The beef tongue was eh... the premium lamb was better. The taro balls took a very long time to cook.. the glass noodles disintegrated in the broth. Overall, the ambiance is what made the meal great, it was cozy and pretty. The broth, the meat were okay. Glad I tried it, but there are better spots for the food hot pot... just not as good of an ambiance as here.

We had requested if we can get a pot of plain water for the baby so that we can boil stuff without any sodium. She said sorry that will have to cost extra. But then I referred back to their ad that children under 3 eats free. And the whole explanation was yes but they could not have their own pot. She says this is just company policy and that it's not my decision. A few minutes later she came back and said I talked to management and they said it was ok for you to have a pot of plain water. After this, she doesn't come back to check in on us or ask for any refills on the soup and had to flag her down. Plates were slow to be cleared. Food - in the past we loved the fresh noodles here, but not anymore. Maybe it's due to less people, but the noodles are old and stay clumped up together. Everything else was pretty typical with the vegetables and the various types of fish balls. I don't think we will be returning here anytime soon. There are so many hot pot places to go to that are higher quality and better service. It's sad because they were once so popular, but I don't think they have adapted to the changing restaurant options in flushing.

I came with several Chinese friends together today, and we will definitely come back again. This place is heaven for hotpot & lamb lovers like me. We ordered extra-large lamb spines and chop (which is amazing), and used the soup base for other vegetables (I highly recommend mushrooms and fried tofu skin). They were deep into the adult beverages on their tables so I thought I would duck inside to check out a take-away menu. It is such a small spot that when the door opens and you walk in, it is obvious, so it is a little intimidating unless you speak Mandarin (I don't) and it would be awkward to try to back out unnoticed. So I did what I always do in that situation, which is to enter, fumblefu*k around in English and give my best impression of a forlorn, hungry guy willing to spend some money to get fed. There were 2 service staff that were on me immediately in a nice way. They helped get me oriented with an English menu and a $3 beer and I tucked into a strategic corner to consider the large array of authentic offerings on the menu while watching the parties going on around me. My take-away order was substantial in portion sizes for the price. They get high marks for that and I thought the taste was good if but a bit on the salty side. Despite the saltiness, there was plenty of mouth-numbing Sichuan peppercorn paresthesias assaulting my lips and tongue after! There were many interesting items on the menu that I would have tried had I been more than 1 person (I was not sure I could eat an entire portion of offals alone) or had I been eating in the restaurant (they have things that do not seem like they would travel well). It just made me want to go back. Here are some of the things on the menu that you won't see everyday outside of a bona fide Chinatown: Boiled Blood Curd in Pot; Hot Spicy Frog; Pork Feet with Hot Sauce; Ox Tongue and Tripe; Jelly Fish Heads; Stinky Tofu. There are about 15 other dishes on the menu that would make for either a great eating adventure or a good museum collection for a psychopath depending on your world view. I see that there are some negative comments on here about this place and I will agree with the comment that I found the food to be heavily seasoned, almost overly so. But I enjoyed what I had and am a fan of their price:portion ratio. I found the wait staff to be friendly and helpful. Plus, there was obviously something that the 40 or so drunken Chinese natives in the place knew about going here for a great time and a good meal. Beef chow fun was ok. Three cup chicken wasn't for me, plain with slightly gingery flavor, need to have basil with each bite, small bone pieces (be careful); and Beef stew meat wasn't tender, tough and chewy. Big plus: they're open late until 11 pm, which is always appreciated. They have a solid list of over-rice combos, all reasonably priced around $11-$12, with generous portions. I ordered the beef with bitter melon over rice, and this alone guarantees I'll be back. It's the first time I've seen this combo offered anywhere, and it was surprisingly delicious, even with the natural bitterness of the bitter melon. My husband ordered the beef with bamboo shoots over rice, and that was tasty as well. Everything came out flavorful and satisfying. Service was another highlight -- the wait staff was quick to refill our hot tea, and the place was clean and well-kept, even though we came close to closing time. Also glad to see that they accept cards though there is a $20 minimum. We also ordered the stinky tofu. While I wasn't used to the sauce they used (it had soy sauce and capers, which was a bit different from what I'm accustomed to), it didn't take away from how yummy the tofu itself was. Overall, this was a great late-night find, and I'll definitely be coming back to try more items on their menu. Glad we finally stopped in!

It takes a special skill in making the crispness found at the bottom of the clay pot without burning. The prices are beyond amazing and reasonable. For a single person, you don't have to spend a lot for good food at a reasonable price. I wish it took pictures but I attacked it so quickly. LOL. The waitress has been here for a long time so always remember to take care of the staff. The restaurant does a lot of delivery business so don't let the empty chairs and tables fool you. Come down and support them!

One red flag was that there was no disclaimers that the claypot rice would take at least 15 mins or so to make as that's what I would expect for an authentic made to order claypot rice. We ordered the Grilled Eel and Home-Style Braised Pork Casserole, which both came out in under 10 minutes. The pork was definitely plentiful and seasoned well but it was definitely premade and just plated in the claypot. The eel claypot rice did not have the crispy rice in the bottom of the claypot and definitely seemed like it was precooked rice that was thrown into the claypot for presentation. The food was not terrible but it definitely disappointing and not authentic. The milk custard was not my favorite as it tasted like stinky milk. Overall, I would not recommend Mr BoBo and hope they step up their game soon.

Staff doesn't pay that much attention to you throughout the meal, which is fine, but they were certainly attentive when I was paying tip. They got very aggressive when I wanted to tip pre-tax vs after tax. I wouldn't come back here. I think there are better skewer spots around, especially since Flushing has so many these days.
