In all the years I've been going to First Slice, I haven't been to this location. I'm not sure if perhaps it replaced the one that used to be in Lillstreet Art Center (though perhaps that's the one on Montrose). It's nestled into a little commercial area in Ravenswood Manor RIGHT next to the Francisco stop on the Brown line. Parking is probably often not bad, though perhaps I just stopped here at a good time. But I do think parking would probably be easier than the other locations, where it can be tricky. The cafe itself is fairly small, smaller than the Ashland location. But they may have outdoor seating in the warmer months too. Luckily they seem to have all the goodies that the other locations have, including the French Silk pie that is my weakness. read more

Delicious, fresh food-- so many options that sounded amazing. I got the chicken and guacamole sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich had an excellent balance of flavor, no ingredient overpowering the others. And the side salad was perfectly dressed and had a hint of spice. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Most customers just stopped in for a pick-up or to-go order, but I found it an enjoyable place to work while enjoying my latte. The latte was a bit weak for my taste, so I ordered an extra espresso shot-- I will do that by default when I return. The space well-lit with natural light and a few tables. It was a little warm but I prefer that to a blasting AC, even on an almost 90 degree day. The do have to bake those pies after all. Got my pie to go but I'm sure it will be delicious. read more

I feel sad to write a bad review, but I felt like I had to. I walked in 30 minutes before close. No one was there. I shouted over the counter into the back saying "hello" to see if anyone was there. No one came for several minutes. Finally one of the cooks saw me and told me to wait a sec and called over the cashier. I ordered a curry chicken salad to go, as I thought it would be the easiest option for the kitchen. I'm sad to say it is close to the worst salad I have ever had. The chicken is completely dry and tough to chew. Besides the curry seasoning, it was totally flavorless. I do not think any salt was used. The greens were just chopped lettuce. There's no dressing, no zest, no flavor, no variety.. I also ordered a slice of pie, and was handed a pre-packaged piece of pie (not one served from the window). There was what appeared to be a melted orange candy of some kind on top of the pie. I asked the cashier what it was, and she told me it was a candy egg leftover from Easter. I stood there, genuinely confused for a minute, thinking I had lost my mind and didn't know what day/week/month it was. Easter was 18 days ago. I just awkwardly said, "oh, okay" and walked out. If you're going to sell pies that have been frozen, considering skipping the melted Easter candy next time. The whole experience left a (ahem) bad taste in my mouth. The staff is friendly and the pie is generally pretty good, and I will return for that, but skip the salad next time. read more

We are now obsessed with first slice! We have been meaning to go here for years and somehow everything we are available to go they are closed. We finally found an opportunity after five years and holy crap it's delicious! We started off with fresh lemonades and slices of pie. The winner of the pie is always the peanut butter slice. My husband ordered a sandwich with ham and cheese with a side of chips while mine was a delicious turkey and avocado with a side salad. Guys, this place is so good. Ordered Cuban sandwich and a slice of cherry pie for take out. Was really looking forward to both. The pie did not disappoint. The sandwich, on the other hand, did. I really wanted to like it. Especially since this was my first time ordering from here. What ruined the sandwich was the bread. It was all wrong. A Cuban sandwich calls for a crusty bread. If you can't get actual Cuban (or Puerto Rican) bread (which in Chicago, you can), a crusty bread of some sort could work. Even focaccia or a baguette. But a soft slice of Turano style bread just didn't work. I suppose if you've never had an authentic Cuban sandwich, it might not make a difference, but if you have, you'll be disappointed. I will order from here again, but I'll make a different choice. I look forward to working my way through the menu...especially the pies. read more

I got a veggie lasagna for my friends who are new parents. It's one of my favorite things to eat! Bake at home! Yum!!

The pies are great but this is not a good place to stop for morning coffee. The carrot muffin I got was super stale and the coffee was just fine. They seem so thoughtful about their other items, you would think they could nail breakfast pastries and coffee. I love first slice! This was my first time going to this location. It's a bit small and we happen to be there on a super busy day, so we took our food to eat in the park across the street instead of eating inside. I ordered the goat cheese and poached pear sandwich. They really stuffed it with a variety of vegetables! It was amazing! So many places don't know how to do a good veggie sandwich but this place has it down. It had cauliflower, onions, mushrooms, pear, goat cheese, spinach - so many flavors and textures! I also got a slice of the peanut butter and chocolate pie (the last slice!). The pie here is so good it's impossible to not get a piece, and they have so many different kinds to choose from! Even though they were slammed, the food came out pretty quick. Ma'am, that was the best decision of my life. I ordered: French silk, coffee toffee, Michigan sour cherry, blueberry cheesecake, and key lime. I started with the key lime...I took my first bite and I had to lie down to process what was happening inside my mouth. And I'll admit that I was skeptical! Because I'm a key lime pie purist, and First Slice has a layer of cream on top. But it's AMAZING. Like....really. Next was coffee toffee. Nice, heavy coffee flavor. Delicious. I just had to walk out of this place minutes ago. They 100% don't want customers and will actively try not to serve you. It's currently 5:48pm and went in to pick up a couple pizzas and a polka dot cheesecake for my kids. Even though they publicly say they close at 7pm, the attendant told me they close at 6 and can't serve me. To my surprise, I said I thought you closed at 7, and also it's only 5:45 right now. He said they can't serve me the pizza because it's past 5:45pm. I'm completely surprised because it's clear they just don't want to work and would rather leave early than make a sale. I hope the owner realizes what's happening and either trains the staff or makes some changes. Otherwise vacate the location and let a business take that spot that cares about customers. read more

I had a much better experience here than my visit to the Ashland location of First Slice. First of all, First Slice in general, has a great cause. They help feed folks in need and help employ those who are in a halfway situation. The food is wonderful. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. It is located conveniently right off the Rockwell Brown Line stop. I enjoyed the French Silk and the Peanut Butter pie. They had been properly dethawed which was not the case at the other location of First Slice. This will definitely be one of my favorite cold day hangouts. I really love the fun wallpaper. The floor also has a lot of character. My only wish is that they had some more seating space for singles or couples. However, I know resources and space is limited. read more

However, no matter what she does for living by day, she will always be a Chicago foodie. This morning I took a walk, with hubby, to the east end of Albany Park on Manor Ave. by CTA Francisco Brown Line station. I've been a resident of Albany Park for two (2) years and have never visited "First Slice." First Slice is a cafe that serves classic western-style quick bites for breakfast and lunch, quality-brew coffee, and of course, gourmet pies. I've been to many cafes in Chicago that are more hipsters-friendly or catered to workers who would only hang out with their PC or Mac. "First Slice" is totally welcoming for the entire family. In fact, I saw many little neighborhood kids patronizing. One (1) of the sweet boys, surprisingly, picked out a bottle of grapefruit juice and helped mama with the door. What a gentleman at such tender age! And he's going to be a foodie in the next generation since he knows his "fruit." Ok, look forward to seeing you at the Yelp Elite event in the year of...2035 (when I turn 50)! Anyways, sorry for digressing. I now have to talk about the Mediterranean quiche and the Chicago veggie sandwich we ordered. The young lady was very personable and helpful for suggesting items on the menu, since their menu was pretty extensive. All the ingredients they used were very fresh. They quiche was seasoned nicely; it had a good texture and wasn't "crusty" because it was made-to-order. On the other hand, the choice of cheese for their Chicago veggie sandwich was brilliant! They used the medium-aged cheddar, which complemented the spinach and onion very well. I almost wanted to order another kind of sandwich, but I knew I would have a plenty of opportunities since I live nearby and I enjoy taking a walk meandering "MY" neighborhood. There was one that would tickle your fancy: "Duck & Mozzarella" sandwich! What would that taste like? I hope it would taste "crack-lissimo." Well, if that wasn't funny, I apologized for trying too hard. Unfortunately, I no longer take the brown line to commute to work. Otherwise, I would pop in here more frequently. I'm not a huge "pie" person, but they complete my equation with other items that are wholesome and healthy. Fabulous pie coupled with a mission to feed the homeless?! Now that's a business I'm happy to support. After meaning to sample the pies for years, I finally stopped in this afternoon for a sweet treat with the fam. The kids chose a piece of the chocolate strawberry cream pie and finished every last morsel. The hubs opted for the French silk and it was pretty darn perfect. I went with a lemon poppyseed biscotti and a hazelnut latte. The biscotti was tasty but the pies are definitely the stars of the shop. The latte was just lukewarm which was a bit of a bummer, but the strangest thing was that the coffee cup sleeve smelled very strongly of perfume. Hmm...In any case, I'd be happy to return to indulge my sweet tooth once again and sample a couple of savory menu items as well. This is a nice little neighborhood gem near my apartment in Albany Park. I have been here a few times and usually have the quiche, which is simply awesome. Filling but not too heavy. The iced coffee is very good (I usually drink iced latte), and I wouldn't hesitate to order one of those again, especially in these warmer months. Last time I was there, I ordered the mac and cheese with lobster. VERY good. Lots of flavor and not super heavy, which isn't great when it's in the 90's outside. The only gluten-free baked good is a peanut-butter cookie. which is just okay (doesn't hold together well- eat it with a fork). Nice addition to the neighborhood, and perfectly located for commuters. This location is always well kept and has a variety of choices. Their coffee is good; if you are like me and do not like the taste of hot milk, they do have soy and almond. They also have specials up on their wall everyday. The staff has a lot of positive energy and they make your stay feel like you are in their home. The location is small, cozy and everything a little cafe should be, in my opinion. I have enjoyed myself every time I have stopped by. The Francisco Brown line is right next-door and it does make noise, but nothing to make a big deal about. This is a place that really cares about the community. They do a lot of outreach to help feed families who are underserved. Plus, the pies here are delicious. My favorite is the key lime and Michigan sour Cherry. I love pizza Friday's where you can get an entire personal sized pizza for $6-$7! They're delicious! I will say as a word of advice; try to call ahead of time as it is a made to order pizza made fresh so it takes about 25 minutes to make. Great hidden gem! You'd miss it if you're just driving through the neighborhood (which I did!) This is a great lunch spot! I went on a Friday at 11am with a friend. She got an iced coffee, I ordered an Americano and a slice of Mediterranean quiche (served with a side salad). FIRST BITE- SCRUMPTIOUS!!! It's very fresh and included goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and mushrooms. Sooooo good! I will definitely come again! Oh yes, and my Americano was delicious. Beagle found this place with his little puppy nose and brought us here. No, really... I have pictures to prove it! Some weekend mornings, I am too burnt out to cook. On those days my handsome Boyfriend will suggest a walk and a coffee. Here, our Beagle wanted pie, or maybe quiche, or maybe baked treats... They were all good but what I really, really adored was the duck and mozzarella sandwich- delicious, wonderful textures and I seriously debated getting another. Yes, two sandwiches, all for me. Shut up, it was that delectable. I got a slice of pie and shared it with Boyfriend and Beagle. Boyfriend had the mediterranean quiche with salad and there were no leftovers- which means it was scrumptious. The guy at the counter was cute and sweet- which I appreciate tremendously. Just wonderful! I mean really tasty! Delicious! We needed quick easy take out food, and I knew they also stocked cream top whole un-homogenized milk, which is my milk jam for sure! Two birds with one stone, milk we need and food we want. Three small pies happened; apple - really really good, strawberry rhubarb - even better, and balsamic raspberry pear - this one is by far my fave, not too sweet, all sorts of deep lush decadent raspberry flavor, the consistency makes me smile just thinking of it, I feel like I could just sit and eat a whole one of these (big one) and call that dinner, it's got to be good for me right, all that fruit? We also did a couple triple combo 70's salads and they were all good, figured, we might not like one, and figured do a tour of the 70's salad play list, and they were all good, but I really liked the tuna and chicken cucumber best! Last but not least, a heat in our own oven, Mac and Cheese, it's pretty much my fave simple home style no added meat or gimmick Mac N Cheese ever! Fruit Pies Like Michigan sour cherry, strawberry, blueberry, apple, peach, a mixture of fruits, etc ; or unusual pies like Balsamic Raspberry Pear Pie, Red Wine Poached Pear Streusel; traditional like pecan; cheesecake based like plain, or with fruits, or seasonal flavors like pumpkin. It's a pie place. Soups lean towards "Hearty Soups" with roasted flavors, whole grains, or chili. There are standard and special soups. Food leans towards a touch of something savory or with a twist like goat cheese. There are Community plates which setup multiple items for sharing. There are deli salads to create a duo or trio sampling. Many items have an organic label. Some maybe sourced locally. I tried the roasted veggie sandwich with two sides for $10. It was savory. I added hot sauce to kick it up. The bread was fresh. A suggestion would be to chop the veggies a bit so they don't 'string out' on each bite. Loose Leaf teas are available for tea lovers, presented in a pot. Customers can ask for hot water refills anytime. The Scene The customers on my visit were local, quiet, and some regulars plus a few newbies. There is small playlot nearby which attracts a few parents going to and from. Most customers seem to order and be on their way immediately or after a short visit during my weekday midday visit. The Service On my visit, the front counter was super uber mix of friendly, local, and straight shooter anticipating needs and asking question, plus providing some direction to people on what to try with a curious mind, and where to find stuff in the cafe (Annette). Annette is mentioned in several other reviews and she might be 'not so secret' asset to differentiate this shop's service 'authentic not corporate' feel. The counter can be busy, so you might wait a minute while they provide service to each customer and manage the shop. The Facilities. The cafe is small with 4 tables inside, two of them are community. Outside it's three tables. The cafe had soft indie pop music on my visit. Next to the cafe is the Brown Line, and it has a slow muffled rumble. WiFi is free. The Restroom is in the kitchen, and is Employee grade with a cleaning closet mixed in. recommended for those looking for a local small cafe, local service, local twist on the cafe menu especially if you like to try some locally sourced pie.
