Short Stack of Vanilla Buttermilk Pancakes as "Breakfast Special"
    Mark T.

This is going to seem irrelevant, but I assure you I am going somewhere with this: I've had really great sushi that didn't need soy sauce, and I've had incredible steak that didn't need anything except for the salt and pepper it was already seasoned with. Now, there's nothing wrong with adding some sauce if you prefer, but it is not necessary to have an enjoyable meal. Yet, there've also been cases where without a generous helping of sauce, you are left with something dry and/or insipid. I believe this is true for pancakes as well. There is nothing wrong with butter and maple syrup... however, a good pancake should be at least somewhat enjoyable without. I regret to say the Vanilla Buttermilk Pancakes at Little Corner Restaurant needed a 'healthy' dose of butter and syrup to help lift them out of the hole they found themselves in. I found these pancakes bland, lacking sweetness and any vanilla flavor. To make matters worse, they were notably dry throughout, with almost no distinction between the outer and inner layers. I also opted to make it a "Breakfast special" which included two eggs and a form of meat. The eggs (ordered over medium) were fine in that they were prepared as requested, but had no seasoning of any kind (to be fair, there was salt, pepper, and hot sauce at the table). The sausage links were A-OK, no complaints there. I also want to give some credit to the service. It was appropriately attentive for a place like this, and the food came out quickly. Finally, where it comes to prices, I'd say they were not terribly high, but then again, what does one get for these prices? Dry pancakes, unseasoned eggs, and two sausage links that were factory made and heated from frozen or refrigerated. I wanted to give two stars... but when I realized I would rather eat something from the freezer section of the grocery store than make a return trip to a sit down restaurant/diner, that is not a sign that I can give any semblance of recommendation via the rating.

I had just come to the beach and only had a Danish and coffee for breakfast so I needed something, on a wim ran In and ordered this wonderful salad. they don't substitute, although I will say everything is super fresh and made to order. All the patriots were regulars, you could tell. Restaurant was quiet & super clean. if possible I'd love to grab breakfast there in the morning b4 we head for the airport. Definitely a hidden gem.

I thought this restaurant was pretty good! No GF bread, so you know that's an automatic loss of a star... Anyway, I like the ambiance. It looks like it hasn't been updated since maybe the 70's and it's awesome! There's a huge counter to sit at, as well as a few booths on the outer perimeter. It's small, and I bet it gets pretty busy, so maybe try to go on an off time? The server was incredibly nice and sweet, and attentive. We stumbled upon this restaurant by chance, and I'm glad we did. I will definitely be back! I added pics of the entire menu. You're welcome!

This is a good neighborhood breakfast spot. I have been coming here on and off since the pre-Yelp days. The service is excellent and the food is good. You seat yourself (I've never had to wait for a table) and the staff is always friendly. On this most recent visit, I sat at the counter and the server gave me a menu immediately and asked what if I wanted coffee. The good service continued throughout my meal. I ordered a Greek omelette, which arrived quickly and tasted good. One interesting thing is, if you say no toast, the server offers you tomato slices. These aren't the beat tomato slices, but I ate them with the omelette. I sat at the counter, ate my Greek omelette and read the news, an all around good experience.

This is the perfect place if you just want a local breakfast diner experience! I don't think the decor has been updates since the 1980s and that's perfectly okay! The food is wonderful if you're looking for simple comfort food. There's no avocado toast or vegan breakfast chilaquiles here, it's just simple breakfast and diner staples but it really hits the spot if you're in the mood.

My friends and I kept passing this restaurant near our Airbnb and so glad we did!…read more We had a bit of a wait because the place was popping on a Saturday morning. Luckily it was nice outside. We got a table after 10-15 minutes. Our server was very attentive and kind. They both hot and cold coffee although the menu did not specify they had cold coffee. I ordered the 2 eggs any style breakfast and turkey sausage. It was a great size portion and served with fresh fruit. The biscuit was so fresh and delicious! I was also really impressed with the baked goods selection they had on display. My friends and I got a blondie and a Nanaimo bar. Both were absolutely amazing. I loved how friendly everyone was and how delicious the food was. I definitely recommend you stop by!

The food here has always been solid and I LOVE their Sloppy Joes sandwich. This ain't a Manwich sloppy joe, but one for gown folks. It is made braised brisket and ground sirloin in a smoked chipotle barbecue sauce on a homemade baguette and it is to die for! I am also a fan of their Chicken and Biscuits, but you have to get it with a side of mash potatoes, trust me on this as it is the total meal. The Queen speaks highly of the Smoked Salmon Omelet (smoked Atlantic salmon, goat cheese & sautéed onions). I had the a bite and loved the fact that it had goat cheese in it, so tasty. I am also a fan of the Coconut Almond pancakes (two buttermilk & almond pancakes with shredded coconut, topped with warm homemade caramel, fresh whipped cream, and banana slices). While they come with a lot of toppings, I prefer just the pancakes on their own so I can get the full impact of the coconut and almond flavor. The space is very small and they do not do reservations, so be prepared to wait depending on what day and time you go. Weekends can be crazy but they do have an outside are you can eat at, but with the weather getting on the cool side, it's a dealer's choice if you want to eat outside. Parking can be tight as it is all paid street parking nearby, although there is free parking on the side streets...good luck locating it though. Service has been great when I have dined in or gotten take-out, so no complaints there. I will still say my favorite dish is the Sloppy Joes and that will keep me coming back.

And I don't eat meats that are made with nitrates. So that knocks out the whole sandwich menu. Oh and I just don't like mushrooms. It's not their problem! Believe me, I know I'm a hot mess. You can't just order a sandwich with chicken and arugula because everything is pre-made and the chicken diced up and is already mixed with red bell peppers, more like a chicken salad sandwich, rather than just a piece of chicken breast waiting for some bread and accoutrements which is what I expected after reading the menu on my phone the day before choosing it for a visit. So it's impossible to get a custom sandwich where you pick and choose what's on it. But they were extremely nice answering all my questions about the food. I could maybe get some focaccia and a side of broccoli if I was desperate and nothing else was open. But I was in no rush and just went home and made something for myself. But my partner really enjoyed it so I'm glad we stopped by to check it out. It's definitely unique and convenient if you don't have so many food allergies like I do. I had already had my coffee fix for the day so I neglected to ask if they have nondairy milk options. There's limited seating inside but lots outside if the weather's nice! Cute little place.

I doubt anyone leaves feeling less jolly than they did going in. On this visit, I started with the After Word to drink. It was light-bodied, not at all too sweet, and possibly went down *too* easily. We split the short rib poutine and I can't think of a better dish to get you through the winter. The meat absolutely melted in the mouth and the cheese was abundant and rich. Would order again in a heartbeat! We also tried the alligator bites as a seasonal special. I'd not had alligator before, but they were super crispy and spicy with an addictive gochujang sauce. It really does taste like chicken. If you've ever wanted to try alligator, this is the place to do it. For the main event, I opted for the red beans and rice hand pie. It came with a light, citrus salad and delicious hand cut fries with 3 dipping sauces, which were very fun to try. I loved the buttery pie crust but the filling tasty very tomato forward- I was missing the heat of a traditional red beans & rice and wished there was more seasoning. Still good. As usual, the portions were generous for the price and we left with leftovers. Absolutely recommend making the trek over here to give B&B a try, and will be back soon!

The servers are always really laid back, and nothing feels rushed. I think it's part of the charm; somewhere to go and relax and take your time to enjoy the vibe. And you know what would help the vibe even more? Including the bread pudding on the menu full time. Keeping that bad boy stocked for me at all times. (This time was my first time seeing it on the specials menu and listen, it WAS special. So special that you should upgrade it to mainstay is all.)

Hopleaf Bar is hands down one of our favorite spots for dinner and drink in all of Chicago!…read more One key to a successful dinning experience at Hopleaf is knowing the three different spaces to engage. When you first walk in, you have to show your ID since this is an adults-only bar establishment. (1) You can then choose to sit in the front bar area, if you want a full menu, but use the bar for ordering service. (2) If you keep walking through the front bar area, you reach the host stand at the top of the ramp. This is where you can put your name in to sit in the main dining room, upstairs, or outside. (3) However, you can also walk through to the left of the host stand to another bar area that has full menus, but bar service for ordering. This is our preferred spot because we can often find a seat and order with the bar. Do note that, during busy times, part of this bar area is managed by the host stand and will be labeled as such. The extensive beer menu is our favorite. We have our favorite food items, so all our decision making revolves around which beer we will get. They always have a bit of everything style-wise, from all over the world, but with a local-brewery focus. Seasonal emphasis is also taken into consideration when they curate the beer list. It is always rotating and we love it! Beers are served in the recommended glasses from the breweries. It's a great drinking experience from start to finish! Our food orders are eternally set: I get the Nueske Ham sandwich with fries and aioli. My husband gets the Reuben sandwich with fries and aioli. This meal is so perfect we'll probably never get anything different, despite the menu being delicious across the board. The wildest we get is sometimes splitting the two sandwiches. No reason to mess with a good thing! Other notable great things about Hopleaf: (1) Kind, knowledgeable, and professional staff. (2) Reasonable prices for high quality and great variety products. (3) Clean Belgian Bar decor/vibe with lots of space for folks to enjoy their time. (4) They are open late and serve food late. Thank you for being an amazing local spot, Hopleaf! We'll see you soon!
